This book was adorable~ Written from the point of view of the characters in the show (With Dipper and Mabel as your main hosts) the book is packed with fun trivia tidbits from the Gravity Falls television show, tons of hidden messages in the ciphers/codes on all the page backgrounds, and of course--some fun activities for younger readers.
It also includes a great map of Gravity Falls and a Sev'rel Times poster in the back. :3
If you're a fan of the show, I highly recommend checking it out for some added fun with Pine Twins while you're waiting on that next episode to come out.
(And I will admit--I had to look up all the hidden messages. Ha ha ha. XD)
This is a companion guide to the critical darling that Disney treats in the oddest manner. It's a huge hit with children and adults, but they tossed it onto a secondary channel that hardly anyone actually gets, airs new episodes whenever it's raining at midnight on a Tuesday in Berlin (or by some other equation they pulled out of their asses), and lets months go by between those new episodes.
That said, the book is pretty good, kind of a combination activity book focusing on the show's ciphers (not word-searches or coloring pages—it's geared up from that) and a supplemental guide to Gravity Falls as a show, hinting at future plotlines and character development, which the show's writing does better than most adult-oriented programs out there. You can put your newly-acquired cipher knowledge to decode the mysterious bits of text scattered in the background and figure out some funny and truly horrifying pieces of trivia.
Such fun. I didn't really do much with the puzzles and activities, because I borrowed the book from a friend, but it was still fun. Dipper and Mabel (and others) were really well captured. Bill's page was actually somewhat unnerving which was awesome. If you or someone you care about like the show this is a great little companion book.
I wish I could have read this book when I was younger. I related heavily to Mabel in a cringey way with her page dedicated to a sleepover schedule. I totally made schedules for sleepovers. 😂
Re-read 2020. I was so in the mood for some Gravity Falls and so I decided to check this one out again. I had TONS AND TONS of fun reading this one, it is just such a blast. Dipper with his mystery and Mabel with her FUN FUN FUN GLITTER SPARKLES. I loved that they both got their say in this book + that each of them had a colour (Mabel pink, Dipper black). There are fun facts about the show, the town, the characters, events, monsters, Waddles, family and friends and oh yes enemies. There are codes. There are quizzes. This book is just full with fun and mystery. I definitely want to re-read it again in a few years.

So about 15 days ago I discovered Gravity Falls.
Someone posted fanart on Twitter, and I was instantly interested. Of course I had no clue what Gravity Falls was then, but someone there was more than happy to help me out with all my questions. And then I started watching it and I was a goner. The show was just too awesome, and I am even thinking of re-watching them again. Until that time comes though I decided to also get all the books that are around about the series. From the Choose your own adventure (waiting for that one to arrive) to Journal 3 (waiting for that to come out). I wish there were more books out about Gravity Falls (books like this one, but also new stories, there are enough monsters mentioned in that (and the other) journal(s).
This book was just a delight, it is mostly from the POV of Dipper and Mabel, you can clearly see who is writing at the moment due to the way they write, but also due to the colours used. Mabel using sparkles and pink, Dipper going for more serious black. The text are also so different. Whereas Dipper talks about the supernatural stuff, codes, and other serious stuff, Mabel is more for fun, fun, and more fun. With her you will learn about sweaters, about boys, about sleepovers, and more! At times Mabel comes inbetween of Dipper's text and I just loved when that happened. It was just like I was there with them, seeing them standing in front of me, and talking to me first one, then the other.
The whole book felt like that, the pacing was great, but it just felt like I was there with the characters wherever they were. Inside the Mystery Shack, and outside of it. Sure, this isn't the first time it happens with me and books, it happens quite often, but often it is just watching from outside, it is not often that I can actually visualise myself standing next to the characters and following them. Maybe it is because I know how everything looks in the Mystery Shack and beyond. That I know how the characters react/move/do stuff. Often with books you still have to create the world, here the world is already set in place.
We also get POV from the other characters. Soos, Wendy, Grunkle Stan, and even Gideon and Bill (urgh to both). They each have something to tell, and it was just so much fun that they were included in this book. Of course, I would have loved it already if Dipper and Mabel were the only ones, but this? This makes it even better.
The book is really fun, and also interactive. There are codes to solve, puzzles to be made, things to do. Even though of course I just had to write stuff down somewhere else, because no, no, just no to scribbling in a book (unless of course it is an activity book, though even there I find it hard to do).
All in all, this is one book I would highly recommend to all Gravity Falls fans. Be sure to only read it when you watched it, as there are some spoilers for at least the first season.
I don’t usually enjoy the guidebooks and extended comic-book adventures of my kids’ favorite cartoons, but “Gravity Falls” is the exception. This particular guidebook, written as a diary shared by the mystery-obsessed Dipper and his silly twin-sister Mabel, has plenty for kids (and their grownup counterparts) to enjoy, with just-scary enough monsters and actually funny jokes, plus lots of codes and puzzles to solve.
3.5 I got this because it was free on kindle at some point (It might still be actually...), and it was a fun quick read. If you have a kid who enjoys Gravity Falls I'd recommend it for them. I will say I expected there to be a few more "activities" in this "activity book", Because of the lack of them I did not find this to be too much different from Journal 3, which goes over most of the stuff in this book in much more detail. For that reason I'd recommend that book over this one, unless you REALLY love Gravity Falls.
I'm a huge fan of Gravity Falls, and I had high expectations for Dipper's and Mabel's Guide to Mystery and Nonstop Fun. I was hoping it would be like The Daring Book for Girls, but wackier, with instructions for lots of fun things to do. Alas, it was not what I hoped. It just felt like a cash-grab--random blather stretched out to book-length. There's nothing to do in it--I'm struggling to describe the utter lack of content here. Like, there's a lot crammed on each page, but it's mostly meaningless. This book neither suggests fun things to do in real life nor tells us anything new about our beloved fictional town and characters. And speaking of the characters, the worst part is that they're not well depicted here at all. Dipper and Mabel have been reduced to caricatures--Dipper is nonstop paranoid about ghosts, and Mabel is depicted as empty-headed, immature, and just throwing glitter everywhere without any cares about anything or anyone. Yes, these characters appear in these ways on the show from time to time, but the best part of the show is how the characters go beyond stereotypes and we get to see their many layers as they interact and learn and have adventures. But in this Guide they're about as layered as a single sheet of paper. There's no hint of the Dipper that , or the Mabel that And that's a true let-down.
While an adorable book geared towards the... actual target audience of Gravity Falls (including some kiddish activities, etc.), the book does contain information about the characters that the show doesn't go into, as well as some vital clues for the older audiences. Including Dipper's weird supervillain manifesto written in code in his "certificate" and a brief visit from Bill Cipher that suggests he's still existing in Dipper's head in some capacity.
Ultimately, it's a good companion to the series that stays true to the characters and offers even more clues and questions about the show.
This is a nice supplement to the Gravity Falls series, with numerous call-outs to various events and characters in the series. It seems like it may have come out between Season 1 and Season 2, because Season 2 isn't really represented. It doesn't add a lot of new content to the Gravity Falls experience, but it does do a good job of capturing the sound and tone of the series. It's not vital, but it's a nice way to revisit the Pines.
My son and daughter enjoyed this series. So I decided to check out the ebook before purchasing a physical copy, and I must say I am impressed by how totally awesome this book is. Not only does it give details about the different anomalies in the cartoon, they are tons of fun activities and cool ciphers to learn. Even teaches about Morse code and pig Latin. A must read for all fans.
So there's actually quite a bit of reading here for a book with glitter on the cover. Lots of information on the mysteries of Gravity Falls with references to past episodes as well as possible spoilers, especially if you take the time to decode the messages throughout the book. Cute read for any 'Gravity Falls' fan.
There was some cool stuff- codes and map of gravity falls - but there were a lot of sexist generalizations about girls. So I'm knocking off a star for that. Not really worth the read, but I'm not really in the right age range either. Still, seemed mostly a rehash of the show and a poor book for girls. Also: there's some satire which I feel like the younger kids would take at face value. Not good.
