Holmberg’s multi-volume saga starts here. The world he has created is a fairly standard one for fantasy with its medieval technology, hand labor and horse transportation. Weaponry is also standard with swords and bows predominating.

The novelty is confined to the personification of elementals (earth, air, fire and water) and the fantasy skills of “shapers” and “sensers” who can make use of aspects of those elementals.

Our protagonist is Tannen, a lad living with his mother, in the local country seat of Nor. His mother serves the local noble and wants her son to follow in her footsteps by going to the university in the capital of Ethea.

One day, a band of wanders comes through Nor and Tannen feels a bond with a girl, Amia. Shortly thereafter, a traveler (Roine) comes to town looking help from Tan’s mother. Then the disasters follow. They way to tell that this is a YA fantasy is that most of the adults are quickly eliminated.
*Potential spoiler ahead

Then, Tan, Amia and Roine are off on a mission to save the kingdom and, perhaps, humanity by locating and possessing an artifact. If the bad guys get it first, it’s “game over.”

"“You said great power is trapped inside.” Roine nodded. “And I could do much good.” “More than the ancients who created it?” Tan asked. “Why do you think they hid it? Why create such elaborate protection?” “I don’t know. Few records of that time remain. They suggest the ancient warriors knew a time would come when this artifact would be needed.”

Of course, there are chases and battles where we find out how powerful their opponents are:
"As they emerged into the bright light of day, the sky thundered ceaselessly, like a heavy drum. Frequent bolts of lightning attempted to tear apart the sky. The air sizzled with the energy of the lightning, almost crackling with it. Roine and Lacertin battled. Tan could not pause to watch, but wished that he could. Overhead, an epic battle between two powerful Cloud Warriors raged, and he was witness to it.

Of course they find a way to the artifact, but that is only the start (and has taken all of book #1).

"“Tannen!” he said. “Now is the time when you must serve your king. Take the artifact and get yourself and Amia out of this cave. Head for Ethea.”"

There are at least three more books in this adventure, but I am not the right audience and have seen enough. 2.5*

English ebook - first book in the trilogy. - I have dyslexia-
The sudden howl sent a shiver through Tan. The terrible sound echoed several times during the day, and each time he reacted the same. He checked his bow reflexively, feeling the reassuring weight of the wood. Whatever was out there didn't belong in this forest. -
Tan had a father who was an earth sencer. He died. Little did he know his mother was a shaper. He finds out when Roine comes to the village and askes him to lead him across the mountains. Tan does not know what kind of a quest he will find along the way and witch friends he will make.
Great start for this trilogy. Straight on to the second book. I am hooked.
- not enough to make up for what was lost, but it was a start - 🌹🌷🌹

I really enjoyed this one. It's pretty simple as far as fantasy goes, but I guess it hearkened back to an era when fantasy was about fun adventures. I don't want to read this kind fo story all the time, but it's nice to read them occasionally. It's refreshing in a way.

Holmberg is generally a competent writer. I noticed a few editing issues/typos in the book, but they never distracted me enough to be a problem.

The biggest thing that made the book work for me was the action that started about a third of the way through. Even though the story was nothing daringly original, it kept me flipping (digital) pages, and that's the main job of an author.

I'm happy to see that Holmberg has written a lot of books (both in this series and in others).

Chased by Fire

A powerful first book in a trilogy of magic, earth, wind, water, air and spirit. A young man Tan and woman Amia face obstacles beyond imagination. With the help of others such as Roine the agent of the king, and the humid water elemental they find a way to reach their first goal a relic from a golden age of Cloud Warriors.

This was a decent, quick read. I think it must have been reedited since some of the other reviews I see here, since I only ran across 2-3 wonky issues. Tan is a likable character, confused about what he really wants to do in life, and very much dedicated to the memory of his dead father. There is a handful of supporting characters, mostly likable. The female love interest is just as capable as Tan, though I did get tired of reading about her soft hand, her soft face, her soft this and that. As much as these folks went through, I think she must have possessed at least some muscle and calluses, otherwise she would have curled up and died about a third of the way through the book.

Most of my reasons for knocking down the star value is due to what seemed like inappropriate emotional responses to terrible situations. Oh, and quite a lot of telling instead of showing. We were often told that Tan felt this or that, but the story would have been better off if we'd seen more body language to display his sorrow, exhaustion and fear. As it was, the death of so many friends lacked punch. He often didn't even mention people he cared about specifically. For example, when the Aeta are attacked, he didn't go rushing forward searching for the specific person he'd grown attracted to. After an exceptionally harrowing escape, two friends get separated from him and he pretty much doesn't think or mention them again throughout the rest of the book. Talk about out of sight out of mind!

Lastly, there was quite a lot of overuse of certain words and phrases. Very seldom did people peer, gaze, gawk, stare, spy, etc. It was almost always 'look'. People walked, but seldom staggered, trudged, slogged, hiked, etc. I lost count of how many times Tan did something the way his father had taught him.

Lest you think I completely hated the story, I did not. I liked the magic system, and the elementals the characters interacted with intrigued me. The Aeta are an interesting people and I would like to see more about them. I read the book in just a couple of days (I'm not a fast reader), so it definitely held my interest. And not that this should cause you to read or not read the book, but the cover is very nicely done. It is what drew me to the book in the first place.

I expected much better from this book but I had to find much of the stuff which makes a story irritating to me.

For example I hate when for the whole duration of the book the main characters needs to run and run and run. Already at the beginning of the book they were so tired that they could hardly walk anymore but somehow they keep going and going.
Also I don't like the fact that of course the bad guys are always faster and just about to reach them.

Another bad thing is that the storyline is too concentrated in time. Now I don't remember exactly, but everything was done in less than a week if I'm not mistaken.

The thing that annoyed me the most was when Tan decided to rescue the Aeta trapped by the lysinceds. It was completely out of logic. By anything he knew it was just suicide.
The main problem was that the other guys with him actually went along with it after just a small resistance. At least the two adult ones should have refuted completely, even at the cost of dragging him away by force.

Let's talk about the love story....right from the start you understand which girl he would like, also the only plausable girl in the whole book (there are 2 girls in total), and of course she ended up being the only girl rescued by him and she ended up being exactly the girl they needed for their mission....so much luck eh!

There are others things which I didn't like which mostly fall on the category of the plot armor for the main guys or of the stupity of Tan, but I don't think I need to enumerate everything.
My advice: if you have any experience in reading fantasy books of a certain quality please stay away form this. If you have just started as a reader then you can try this story and probably even appreciate it.

3.5* Standardna fantastika, dobro i zli, magija, smotani glavni junak tinejdžer koji ništa ne shvata. Jednostavna i površna, nedorečena, neispričana. Ideja nije loša, samo mislim da nije baš najbolje ispričana, toliko toga nedostaje, a likovi... Plitki, nerazvijeni, pomalo naivni i tupavi. Ali, malo me zanima dalja priča, dal se možda to sve razvija postepeno, s obzirom da knjige nisu obimne, idem na sledeću.

Sometimes the best fantasy novels are the simple ones. This one doesn't get very complex and wander off the story. You have a quest, a pretty good magic system, a young boy coming of age, and some pretty bad ass villains. What more could you ask for. The story was great, and I'll be buying book two soon.

Middle Grade Fiction

Chased by Fire (The Cloud Warrior Saga, #1) by D.K. Holmberg

More of a middle-grade fantasy than a YA one. Characters are 17-20 years old yet sound and behave like 10-13-year-olds. The beginning was very confusing because the main character doesn't know squat about anything and the author dutifully maintains an unnecessary shroud of mystery over the main plot while overly explaining nonessential plot devices in his narrative.

The central plot (or at least what I believed to be the central plot thread) revolves around Tam, the protag, out tracking these mysterious hounds. Now, these hounds are supernatural in nature and are capable of some magical prowess. The author reminds the reader every chapter that the hounds are vicious and dangerous, but not ONE time does he ever explain as to why. What's strange is that the author has various subplots going on top of this, but each one really doesn't compliment the central action at all.

The Atea are like Gypsies and they seemed pretty interesting, but the unimaginative prose made it difficult to really sink my teeth into the scene. The writing is monotonous and passive voice: the two widow makers of fiction.

That's what made this reading unfocused. The author really needs to donate some sense to his protagonist. I couldn't stand how oblivious Tan is and how he asks a bazillion questions about nothing pertaining to the plot. Reading this book is like watching someone play an RPG where the characters just stare at each other asking/answering questions.

Really can't recommend this, but it's free. Try at your own expense.

I was drawn into the story from the start. The writing style is good. I like the characters and magic system. What annoyed me a little was that the characters seemed to run from one attack to another. Yet the plot was entertaining enough to keep me interested

I've read the first two books and in my opinion, this is a safely average YA fantasy. The plot moves at breakneck pace and the relationships develop faster than most people can blink. There's no slow build-up or nuance, which would still be fine if all the author did was trim the fat, but Holmberg has gone and trimmed off the muscle as well and all we're left with is a bare skeleton of a story.

The leads aren't very interesting either. The main character just keeps getting stronger and better without applying himself to anything and the romance angle has made me cringe since it was introduced. There are a lot more issues I have with this series but I did enjoy the soft-magic system that they have going here. Too bad it's wasted on a mediocre story.

Final Rating - 2.5/5

Loved it!!!

This was a great start to an epic story. Loved it so much I bought it even though it is a kindle unlimited book. DK Homberg deserves it. He spins a great tale. I am excited to begin the next in the series.

I have absolutely loved the Cloud Warrior Saga, the imagination of the entire series held my attention. It was great to just dive right into the story and get lost, in a very good way. That being said I move on to my thoughts on this series editing.
Some of my ratings on these books were four stars instead of the five stars it would have deserved, I will give you a few of the reasons why I think this. The first is editing errors, whomever the "EDITOR" is needs to actually read the books. My next criticism is about how not all the books are marked properly (in the synopsis portion where you read what the e-book is about) with the order in which to read them. Also whomever did that whole debacle with the books order sucks and is off the Christmas list. I unintentionally read a few books out of order due to this. Someone please let all these editor's know not to add in a book later, then call it book 2.5. Holding back such minimal content is annoying, next time put the books that are under a hundred pages together in one book. I would pay extra to have that little convenient option.
My last complaint is that I have just downloaded book eight in this series which makes me sad because I do not want the story to end. I highly enjoyed these books, the short little books in the series were more like short stories but that is just typical for me as I read fast. I had hoped the books would get magically longer that what they last more than one evening. Also I will be copying and pasting this review to the other books since it is more of a generalized review, plus it was not a spoiler review either; hate those.
Buying any of these books in this series is worth it the imagination of them is great and the adventures are awesomely lively, enjoy!!

The characters in this story are well thought out. The story is great following Tan and others as they grow and discover who they are. There are some slow areas but they are few and short. It is a great start to the series. Worth your time and effort to read, for all ages. Great Reading Everyone!

Magic & Mayhem Anthology

Tan is an Earth Sensor, which means he can gain information from sensing what is around him. There are also Shapers who can manipulate what is around them to fit their needs. Roine, a shaper from the king, comes in search of an ancient artifact. Tan accompanies him at his mother's request but soon finds that not only are there more people after the artifact but that he really doesn't know much about the world outside his village.

This was a great fantasy story. People who can sense and shape the elements in a race against time and those who would bend the elements unnaturally. It was tense and suspenseful and the world building was clear and vivid. My biggest and really only complaint was that there was too much bad stuff and not enough good. From the start they were running for their lives and they only had like 10 seconds to relax at all. A little too stressful for me...I know, I'm a weirdo.

I certainly enjoyed this fast paced and well crafted first book in the Cloud Warrior series. As an earth senser, Tan's tasked with helping guide the king's servant through the dangerous mountain passes in search for "the artifact" before Incendin can reach it first. But after losing his father to the war, Tan wants nothing to do with the king's demands. When everything he knows is lost, he's forced to risk himself to save the one person who can find the artifact, a beautiful girl who has lost just as much as Tan. In doing so, power the world hasn't seen in nearly a thousand years is awoken.
I thought the characters in this story were well thought out and the story fast paced. It's a great start to a series and certainly worth your time and effort to read, for all ages. I'm looking forward to the next book in the Cloud Warrior Saga.

A unique fantasy tale

Holmberg has created an interesting world where a seeming-simple boy, Tan, has grown to hunt and enjoy the land. His abilities to "sense" his surroundings, however, are much more than what readers may imagine them to be. A unique story that includes the elements of wind, earth, water and fire in a combination unlike anything else is sure to keep fantasy lovers enthralled. I couldn't help but keep reading with few breaks. A quick, exciting read full of just the right amount of adventure. The only real flaws was the fact that two of the characters couldn't leave their hair alone and Tan seemed to have a splitting headache and popping ears...but to reveal why it was a flaw to the story would spoil why those things were key as well.

Excellent book and story

As a book lover, I read many genres. This book captured my interest right away and offers glimpses of Tan's potential. D.K. Holmberg keeps a fast pace without giving away too much, so while I can guess, I'm still looking forward to the next book. Although there aren't any actual dragons, this book has a similar feel to Anne McCaffrey stories. You get attached to the characters, there's a sense of the history behind the world, and there are plenty of good and bad guys with there own set of problems to overcome. Very good first book, and I'm looking forward to the rest of the series.

The story starts off immediately with the main character Tannen of the Kingdoms. The Kingdoms have those within them with gifts of Sensing and Shaping of the elements; earth, wind, water, and fire. Tanner is one with a gift and is immediately thrust into an adventure that in some ways is a continuation of his parents lives and services to their king. There is a blossoming of a love interest as the story begins and a posibility of so much more. The characters are well written and have rich histories that twists them together. This is only the begging of Tannen's adventure and I cannot wait for the next book!!

Read in one day.

I loved most things about this book. The story starts off a little slow but accelerates at a great pace to leave your heart racing. Push yourself past the first few chapters and you will be hooked.

I read the entirety of this book in one day. The female protagonist was my favorite character by far but I did have a hard time pinning down her personality. I don't know how long the book took to write but she changes a bit heavily from the beginning to the end. Trauma maybe? Either way you won't regret reading.

This is a good series to read for any age. It does follow the classic fantasy formula of "a regular kid who is really X" but is not completely in the type of traps that make us all crazy. It is easy to get caught up in the story flow. I have just completed book 3 on the series and will continue reading.
Why not 5 stars, then? It was good and entertaining, but did not "wow" me with complexity -- and that is fine.

I really enjoyed the first book in the series and found the characters to be quite well written. the book doesn't move at the fastest pace but i find that most first books don't as they are trying to paint a picture of the world and its characters. nevertheless i was never bored and still finished the book in a couple of days.
I will definitely be reading the next book and look forward to finding out what happenss

Elemental action thriller

Written in another realm where the kings subjects practice elemental magic. The magic is getting weak and the neighboring country is about to destroy them all. Two youngsters with plausible gifts head out with a knight to save the world. Action packed, great characterization and plot line. Great young teen. No sex but violence.

Captivating story

While the book had its downs: a few typos and some passages of stilted dialogue that seemed redundant, I was so captivated by the magic of the story and the non-stop action that I read the book in one sitting. A very fun, action-packed read for any fan of the genre. Looking forward to book 2!

A great adventure read. Lots of danger and intrigue. Although I was never really worried about the main characters. This is one of those books where a map of this made up world would be helpful. Tan is a likeable untrained hero. Watching him catch up to what the reader can guess about his abilities is fun.

This book is like one long roller coaster ride. Once you start reading you cannot stop until you have finished. The characters lack depth and most of the time the focus is on what is happening around and not on what the characters are thinking about their situation but apart from that the intriguing magic system and the fast pace of the story makes it worth your time.
Happy Reading.
