Rate this book
Elemental Book One

Across the centuries, the Nikari, a race of vicious elemental mages, have built an empire, bringing an entire continent to its knees. The course of history seems set... until one innocent Andari mage changes everything and claims a greater prize—the heart of the Nikari emperor.

Behnivyr ‘Ivy’ Erethe knows his duty is to wed another Andari Pure-Blood. Craving one moment of freedom before his loveless bonding, he escapes his father’s suffocating protection and goes to a masquerade ball, only to unexpectedly meet a mysterious Nikari named Kris. Kris makes Ivy ache with a need he barely dares to acknowledge. One kiss, one dance—and Ivy’s life changes forever. Unbeknownst to Ivy, Kris is actually Kristelien Fezenda, the Nikari emperor. Forced to make a difficult choice, Ivy picks love over duty and becomes Kris’s concubine.

Poorly prepared for the whirlwind of emotion Ivy summons inside him, Kris now faces the hardest battle of his life. In a ruthless world where all weakness is exploited, where allies become enemies in the blink of an eye, where love can mean death, he will have to defeat more than his own personal demons to breach the rift between him and Ivy.

Alana Ankh

ALANA ANKH is a hopeless romantic. Once upon a time—no, not in the Stone Ages, but when Alana was a nosy teenager—she lived and breathed mainstream romance, but after she discovered m/m…. Well, her fate was sealed.

Regardless of the genre, Alana thinks love can be painful, heartbreaking, but also fun, corny, and a little silly. Love is different for everyone and anyone—and in her books, she tries to celebrate that.

Alana also loves sci-fi, fantasy and paranormal. But even if her boys have scales, fur, claws, fangs—or whatever else occurs to her—they’re really very nice people. Most of the time. Well…. Most of them are nice, but all of them deserve love and a HEA.

When Alana isn’t feeding her addiction to happily-ever-afters and hot men, she’s randomly slaying monsters in MMORPGs or thinking up the next idea to share with readers.

Wow, I didn't expect to enjoy this as much as I did. I'm not sure why I liked this so much. The story line was on par with other high fantasy/romance (a bit fluffy, but I like fluff) I've read and the world building was just OK. Maybe it was the writing, which was mature and above level of a lot of recent reads. Maybe it was the unexpected plot twists and the mature decisions the main characters made. Maybe it was because instead of having The Big Misunderstanding, the characters actually communicated with each other.

Or maybe it's just a case of 'the right book at the right time'. I dunno. All I know is that I liked this a lot and I look forward to reading book two when it comes out.

Meh. It was ok.
I think it was the whole insta-love thing, but I see why and how that would happen.
Off to book 2 cause I want to know who the freaking enemy is

I was drawn in by the gorgeous cover art and the promise of a fantasy world with interesting new species. What I got was a cliché romance book with a genderswapped heroine from the 80s (seriously, Ivy is the blushing virgin stereotype with a dick, he melt around Kris), an overbearing and possesive very, very virile MAN (imagine my eye roll at Kris), cringy sex scenes and a little fantasy and magic thrown in there. I don't know why some authors just can't seem to brake the mold with their parings and their sexual dynamics. And there wasn't even a good story to balance out the failed romance for me.

I'm??? F//ck, honestly. This book isn't really quite up there in quality/craftsmanship, but some particular things about it made me fall for it and tbh after the last page I went back to the start for a re-read, I'm just taking a breather now to write this review. Actually, no, I'll rate it now and write the review later.

Ivy is Andari royalty, a prince who has led a sheltered life and is being basically pawned off to a Lord for the status the union will bring. Longing for just a taste of freedom before he is shackled to a loveless union, he sneaks out one night and attends a local fair where he meets a Nikari that stirs something inside Ivy he is required to keep bound until he is bonded. Of course his father’s come looking for him, but not before Ivy has his first dance, his first kiss.

Kris is ill prepared for the feelings Ivy stirs in him. As the Nikari emperor it would not be in his best interest to bond with an Andari, but don’t we always want what we can’t have? The Nikari emperor can have whatever, and whomever he pleases though. Kris sets an elaborate stage disguised as a masquerade ball, inviting Ivy and his father’s of course, all in an effort to get the man that has already captured his heart, into his bed.

Against all odds and almost everyones wishes, Ivy becomes Kris’s concubine, and eventually his bound concubine, yes there is a difference. But the relationship is not without its difficulties. Ivy is Andari for starters, and this does not make the Nikari people happy at all, especially Kris’s cousin slash brother (can’t even get into that, you’ll have to read the book) and uncle. And the same can be said for Ivy’s people where the Nikari emperor is concerned. But the attraction, the connection and the love that Ivy and Kris share is palpable and real and they are determined to make a life together.

I absolutely loved the elemental magic and the rifts between worlds that the Nikari and their Nightwolves use to travel and fight. There are words and languages used in the story that are unique to this story, but the Author starts the book out with a glossary of terms and an explanation of this world she has created so you would be hard pressed not to understand what is going on or what is being said. Ivy starts out as a sheltered, naïve and innocent young man that wants nothing more than to be loved and appreciated. And he finds that love and appreciation in the last place anyone would have thought, the arms of the enemy. Kris wants someone to see him, the man that he is and the man that he wants to be, and Ivy truly sees him. It was beautiful watching them grow as individuals and as a couple throughout the book.

Kris’s beloved Nighwolfe, Attcha, almost stole the book. Overbearing and fiercely loyal, the nightwolves are companions to the Nikari and watch over them, travel the Rift with them. Attcha is immediately drawn to Ivy and just as protective of him as he is of Kris. It’s very much like a spirit animal sort of relationship, which blends perfectly with the root of this story, this world being based in magic.

I think this story will appeal to many readers, it is rich with content and unexpected plot twists. The romance is passionate and electric, while being innocent and tender when needed. The storyline and the world Ankh has written here are very original as well, fresh and enticing. Full of magic, danger, suspense, romance and an underlying threat, a battle for Nikari that is just beginning. I’m very excited to see where the next book, Fractured Souls, takes these characters and their peoples.

Sneaking out to attend a masquerade party, Ivy is determined to have a good time but he doesn’t expect to meet a handsome Nikari named Kris, especially not when he’s immediately drawn to the man. A night of fun and a tiny bit of passion changes everything for Ivy, though. And when he learns the very Nikari he had the best night with is also the Nikari Emperor, he’s more than ready to leave his life behind for Kris. But Kris has a duty to his people and when his desire for Ivy challenges that, will the two be able to make a relationship last or will Ivy’s sacrifice be for nothing?

It’s no secret that I’m a fantasy lover or that I love arranged marriages (even though this story involves a broken arranged marriage), complex worlds or enemies to lovers so when I saw the blurb for this book, I was eager to get my greedy little hands on it! Needless to say, I absolutely loved it. It hit every single one of my buttons and more. It has an amazingly specific world that deals with inter-dimensions, elemental magic, and different races. I loved that it was so detailed but also had the variations in physicality and culture. Then there’s the hierarchy and the deceit that is in all politics. It was just beyond intriguing and captivating for someone like me who craves these types of stories.

As for the characters, I absolutely adored Ivy and Kris. Kris is so dominate and possessive compared to Ivy’s more ethereal and innocent nature. They’re complete opposites but the connection between them is very strong. I also liked that Ivy had hidden depths; he wasn’t just a meek concubine, he had his own thoughts and ideas that he could contribute. Plus, I really loved that Kris struggled so much with his feelings for Ivy. It was hard for him to accept Ivy as more than a concubine because if he did that, it would mean sharing Ivy with everyone and being so possessive, he didn’t want to do that. It came to the point, though, that he had to make a decision: to love Ivy to the fullest and accept him completely or let Ivy go. It was interesting to see the development up until that point and all the events that caused that eventual decision.

I absolutely adored this book but the one thing I wish it had more of was Ivy and Kris getting to know each other better. Towards the end, you start to see that when Kris ‘courts’ Ivy but I wish that had been more shown and drawn out instead of told.

All in all, this was a great fantasy story that had a mix between suspense, romance and a bit of mystery. I adored both Ivy and Kris and I’m really enjoying where the storyline is going. I’m also loving the nightwolves! I really hope there’s more to come of them! It’ll be interesting to see what Shuri uncovers in the next book. Plus, I’m looking forward to him getting a man of his own ;)

Intrigue, drama, magic, other world, macho alpha, action, in other words a little bit of everything without being angst ridden...There are little books outthere that show the couple beyond the happily ever after and let us into their day to day...I have to say I like reading about the couple after they ride into the sunset and this books doesn't disappoint...for a moment there I thought they were going to fall in the cliché argument/misunderstanding, but no it takes a turn for the better...and it took me by surprise...authors amaze me when they create this other world with it's own culture, vocabulary and religions among other things...Alana, excelled in that regard and many more...I'm looking forward to read the second installment in this series and I sure hope it don't disappoint because, the bar was set high.

This book was hard for me to get through and thinking back on it, I'm not sure why. The characters inhabited a very rich world and the characters were engaging enough for me to finish the entire thing. It did take me multiple tries to finish the book, though. I found the main love story to be a bit strained (though this was addressed within the book itself). Ivy was precious. I loved him. Kris on the other hand was a piece of work. Didn't care so much for him. Could have actually completely shipped Ivy with another character in the story altogether (and part of me is sad that didn't happen). However, it was intriguing enough that I'm curious about book 2. We'll see if I go and pick it up.

It was okay. The fantasy setting had potential but was not fully developed by the author. Hardly any description of any locations were given, and the user of magic in the story seem unnecessary illogical .

Many aspects of the book were either annoying or did not make any sense to me. The writing reminds me of Mary Calmes, with one character (Ivy) being adored and lusted after by all other characters . For a rule who is so concerned about keeping the peace of his land, he was rather stupid in his treatment of his uncle .

Lastly, I did not understand the inconsistencies the the background of the races. The Nikari were created from the union of tow different races and became stronger because of it. However, Nikari-Andari half bloods were weaker than both Nikari and Andari. Furthermore, the book kept mentioning that the Nikari's and Aranken's magic were elemental, so how does the mind arts fit into this?

Ugh, I hate leaving a bad review, I really, really do. As a writer myself, I know that bad reviews can be absolutely devastating, and because of that I always tend to just do a star rating and call it a day.
But Beyond the Rift was really bad, and I wish I had listened to those 2 and 3 star reviews I read before starting. But this book has an overall rating of 3.77??? How??? I read the book with that star rating in mind, and I am truly astonished it has that high of a rating.

There are many things that made this book a very... unpleasant read. The pacing was all over the place, the characters are flat, flat, flat, and the world building is confusing. The names of the different races are very inconsistent - why did the author decide to change spellings of the same races? I get that there was evolution involved, but it seemed like an unnecessary detail that detracted rather than added to the story.

**warning, major spoilers ahead**

(spoiler)As for the characters... wow. I mean, Ivy is perfect. Literally perfect. He has zero character flaws. He is gorgeous, with perfect hair and a perfect body, and he always says and does the right thing. He is kind and understanding and patient... I mean really? No one is this perfect, and no one likes to read about someone who has nothing to them except for their perfection. Even when Ivy gets hurt or mad, he only stays that way for like an hour before his benevolence flows out of him like rainbows and glitter and he forgives everyone involved. He even feels bad for and forgives people who betray him. Rule #1 in writing is making your characters relatable - you do that through character flaws and growth.

Now Kris is flawed, but in an annoying way. His character felt incredibly flat, and he always was either angry or jealous without ever a thought for asking why someone did what they did. And once he realized he was angry and/or jealous for no reason, he immediately acted like the most emo/depressed person ever, deciding that he wasn't worthy of their love, trust, or empathy. He even considers suicide at one point which was wildly out of character... or was it? I honestly don't know, because I don't think the author even knows. These characters felt half-formed and full of inconsistencies.(spoiler)

I'm really sorry for ripping this book apart, as I said, I would be devastated to read something like this about my books. But I am really surprised that an editor and publisher gave this the green light. As a huge fan of m/m fantasy, this was a disappointing waste of time.

I appreciate the world-building but for a mostly magical society, it felt light on the magic, mostly mentioned but not shown. It's one of those books that I feel can be much more but then doesn't quite deliver. I still want a nightwolf, though.

ps. This is the 3rd book of Alana Ankh I read after Splat! and All's Fair in Mate Bonds and Publishing. Seems like arranged marriage is quite a topic for this author.

That was pretty darn good. Romantic, sexy, great world building, interesting and fleshed out characters, some royal intrigue and high stakes, and it was very nicely written. I would've preferred if a couple of questions had been answered before the book wrapped up and hinted at the sequel, but overall I really enjoyed it. The sequel is very much on my To Read list. ;)

Wade through the clunky first few chapters and you get a lovely story. Until about 75% and, then, it's clunky again. 4 stars for good part, but points off on clunkiness. And, don't get me started on the epilogue. ugh.

I loved the cover and the beginning drew me in so purchased this for 6.99. This book started out strong and I enjoyed the first part of this book but the second half of this story killed it for me. By the end of the story the only ones I really cared for were the nightwolves.

I feel like this will appeal to a specific kind of person. Were you into slash fanfic circa 2000 to about 2008? This very much reads like slash fanfiction from that era and reading it made feel feel super nostalgic. Yes this book has not only insta lust, but insta love as well. I think this will have limited appeal if the former doesn't apply to you. I like it, but I can't in good faith rate it higher than a 3 because it's not really great writing, it is a fun blast from the past though.

I went into Beyond the Rift not expecting to be as swept up in it as I was. The book has all the hallmarks of a typical high fantasy/romance. Mystical elements, complex world-building, and the ever-present romantic tension, but there’s something about it that stands out. I was hooked from the get-go, and now that I’m done, I can honestly say I’m looking forward to the next installment.

Let’s start with the world-building, which, while solid, didn’t quite hit the wow factor that some other series have. That said, it’s still an immersive experience. Alana Ankh has crafted a world filled with distinct cultures, a unique magic system, and its own set of rules. I really appreciated the glossary at the beginning; it gave me the tools I needed to dive deeper into the universe without feeling lost. The introduction of the Rift, the dimensional travel, and the elemental magic all felt fresh and exciting, keeping me engaged throughout the novel.

Where this book really shines is in its character dynamics. The central relationship between Ivy and Kris took me by surprise. I was expecting the typical misunderstandings and forced drama, but Beyond the Rift subverts that trope in an unexpected way. These characters talk to each other. They have mature, open conversations that allowed the romance to develop naturally, rather than leaning on forced conflicts. Kris, as the dominant, possessive Nikari Emperor, is a compelling character, though his internal struggles about his feelings for Ivy added depth to the romance. Ivy, on the other hand, is a breath of fresh air. He's not just a passive love interest; his own arc is rich, and his growth is handled well.

I will say that I had a few issues with the pacing, particularly in the beginning. It took me a little while to fully get into the flow of the story, and I found myself initially frustrated by Ivy’s sheltered nature and some of the slower, more expository chapters. But once I hit the middle, things picked up, and I found myself thoroughly invested.

The magic, the Nightwolves, and the world’s political intrigue kept me turning the pages. Attcha, Kris’s Nightwolf, was a standout character, almost stealing the show at times. The loyalty and protectiveness between Kris and Attcha was one of the most enjoyable aspects of the book. I also have to give credit to Ankh for creating a relationship between Kris and Ivy that feels authentic. It’s not perfect, and it’s not easy, but it’s clear that they care deeply for one another.

I’ll admit that there were moments when I wished we could’ve seen more of Ivy and Kris growing closer, more "show" and less "tell" when it came to their developing connection.

Overall, Beyond the Rift is an engaging read that blends magic, romance, and political intrigue in a way that’s both entertaining and thought-provoking. If you're into high fantasy with strong character dynamics, a touch of possessive love, and world-building that feels original and alive, I highly recommend it. I’m definitely on board for book two!

4.5 heart review by Dan

Behnivyr ‘Ivy’ Erethe is a pure-blood Andari whose family has pledged him into a marriage contract with an older man, who Ivy finds distasteful and doesn’t like at all! We first meet Ivy when he sneaks out of the house and goes to a local festival with his manservant Akolo, even though his father and sire have both forbidden him to go. Ivy is your typical barely legal kid out on the town. He samples some extremely potent Nikari liquor and when he almost falls over, he is rescued by a masked stranger. And to make it more interesting, the stranger is a Nikari, somone who his two male parents would never allow him to speak to.

After a romantic chat and Ivy’s very first kiss, Ivy’s father shows up with troops looking for him. He escapes back to the family home, but can’t get the stranger out of his mind. All he knows is that the man’s name was Kris. When Ivy was escaping back to his home, Kris promised they will see each other again…but what are the chances?

Within days the Nikari Emperor, Kristelien Fezenda, has summoned Ivy’s family, and all the noble families of the empire to the capital city for a ball. We soon find out Kris from the festival is actual Kristelien, the Emperor. It seems the entire ball idea was to get Ivy to the capital. When he surprisingly names Ivy as his concubine, shock waves fly through the gathered nobles, and across the empire. It is unheard of for a Nikari and an Andari to mate, as the Nikari conquered the Andari at some point in the past, and resentments run high on the Andari side. When Ivy’s two male parents forbid the relationship, Kris reminds them he is Emperor and he doesn’t need their permission! What a way to piss off the future in-laws!

But how can a pure-blood Andari and a Nikari Emperor fit together? And what about the behind the scenes plotting going on? Who is trying to kill Ivy? And what about Kris’ brother Shuri, who wants Ivy for his own?

I really liked this book and can’t wait to begin the next one!

4.5 Stars

Beyond the Rift is a well-crafted fantasy tale filled with magic, intrigue, and love. The glossary at the beginning intimidated me at first and I feared I would be hopelessly lost, but I found the glossary unnecessary as all was laid out and explained easily within the text.

Ivy and Kris’s relationship started out like a fairytale: love (at least lust) at first sight, not knowing the other’s identity and a whirlwind coming together. However I appreciated that the author slowed them down and had them grow more naturally through the rest of the book. The ending was satisfying and the togetherness strong despite the trials they go through.

The series has an over arcing political intrigue plot that keeps the reader guessing and the story moving forward. I enjoyed the secondary characters, the magic and uniqueness of the setting and history.

I am greatly looking forward to the next book, which focuses on a different set of characters but delves more into the trouble experienced in this novel.

This is a great book!! The MCs are relatable in their respective situations, the bad guys are motivated and more than bad enough, the drama is high and tight and the tension is nail-biting. The main reason I say this book is great is because it did something that would upset the average m/m romance reader and have them returning the book, but it keeps you reading. Well, it kept me reading. Yow want to know what it did? The first sex scene is at 25% in and the second sex scene is at 45% in and you get NO MORE sex scenes after that. Can you image how good a story must be going on in a m/m romance to keep a reader interested with no sex scene on the horizon? A damn good one!!! The last half of the book was drama-filled, fast-paced and hang-on tight for the wild ride. This book has a great plot/premise, great characters, great world-building and great writing. I'm already waiting for book 2! Having said all that, I would suggest that for the second book, after the MC get to their HEA, give me a sex scene, please? I mean, after everything Ivy and Kris went through, some physical connection is the perfect way to end this part of their journey and solidify them enough to prepare for what’s up next. HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

I read Alana’s very first book not long after it came out and loved it. I then read her second book and loved it as well. When I saw this one come out I had to read it. To the point that whatever I was in the process of reading got paused so I could read this book. Pretty darn happy that I did because I fell in LOVE with the world Alana created. She built the world and immersed me in it almost effortlessly. I felt like I was there from the very beginning of the book. The story never lagged for me and I never felt like there wasn’t a purpose to the scene. Too many times fantasy books lose their way because the only point of a scene is “world building” and I get bored. Not the case with this book. Kris and Ivy’s love was quick to build but they both had trouble showing it within the confines of what is acceptable behavior for their roles. The events that cause Kris to harm Ivy are heartbreaking to read but I loved how they started over. This book has such a beautiful ending and I cannot wait to read the next book in this series.

Wow. I liked this one a lot. Ivy is sweet and innocent. He falls hard for Kris, when they meet. Kris just doesn't tell him he is the king. After meeting again Kris offers Ivy the position of concubine. Normally an asshole move, but it works in this story. Unfortunately Kris also treats Ivy as a concubine instead of a lover. It causes a rift, which becomes a chasm due to outside interference, Kris's jealous and resentful half brother and lack of faith from Kris. However, there is never any stupid break up or something like that. The couple have many things against them, but they manage to overcome everything. Kris starts treating Ivy way better and even makes him his consort. The chemistry between the couple is very present. The smexy is hot. However after the rift there are no more smexy times. Not even after the HEA. That was disappointing. One more love scene would have made it perfect. The next book is about the treacherous half brother Shuri. I cannot possibly understand how he could become a likable hero. I'm reluctant to start. I would have loved to read more about Ivy and Kris.

A copy of this book was provided to me by Inked Rainbow Reads in exchange for an honest review.

***3.5 STARS***

Ok, the back story was kind of confusing to me in the beginning, but I went with it. Plus there's a glossary for terms in the book to help guide you.

This story is about Ivy, who is being forced to marry someone he doesn't want, but he'll do his duty anyway. One night, as a last Hurrah, he goes off to play in a festival that he's been forbidden to attend. There he meets Kris, a warrior he shouldn't be around but is drawn to. They share a moment and promise to meet each other again, one way or another.

Kris of course is the emperor and gets what he wants. I liked the story well enough. I even liked Kris and Ivy's interactions. I'm not so sure about the story line though. Kris was too blind for my taste. He jumped into too much conclusions, which drove distance between him and Ivy. I know there's gotta be drama now and then, but it left me feeling like Ivy could have done better.

In the end, it was an okay read and would read book 2.

Even though the blurb makes the books sound a bit like a Young Adult story, with Ivy only a few weeks past his majority, it is not one. Instead, this is an intrigue. Although, Ivy is young and sheltered, Kris is anything but. The story has a rich history, very different cultures, and dangerous secrets. And despite being the first in the series, there is a very satisfying conclusion.

I think the best bit was that Ms Ankh didn’t make Ivy grow up too fast, instead he is the naive boy thrust into court and a position that is mostly decorative who wants to help the man he’s fallen for. And Kris isn’t the man who know everything, instead, having been raised to duty, the situation with Ivy is something he is personally ill prepared for.

I would recommend this for any lovers of high fantasy. Yes, there is some sex, but it’s not gratuitous, and the plot is strong and a roller coaster of emotions. I will definitely be reading the next in the series, and probably the third, just on the basis of this book alone.

I never really have fave authors/writers though I have fave genres which I stick to. At times I would purchase books just based on the pic on the cover and Beyond The Rift is one of these. I just love the cover- It's surreal, pretty, makes me want to know so much more about the person. I read the blurb too but it was the cover that was the selling point.
As I read, I thought, hmm, haven't I come across this plot before? Still I read on.

A well thought out plot and I adore Ivy. Sure I do hope to get more answers in the upcoming Fractured Souls (and more after that?)because I am a HEA freak, I would really like to see Shuri and Kris do some brotherly bonding. As well as Shuri finding some closure re his parents' death.

Good work Miss Alana.

P.S. Saw the cover for Fractured Souls - the sequel- the darn thing is ferocious looking and the extreme opposite of the pic on Beyond the Rift.

This book is honestly just a mess of cliches. It followed a very set and obvious storyline, so none of the events were a surprise to me, and I found that in places, the characters were quite dense and slow, especially when they're not meant to be (ie, the emperor should be shown to be a lot smarter than what his actions showed). I could tell from three-quarters of the way through that the sequel would be based on Shuri finding love, however the blurb for it actually looks pretty good, so I'll give the author another go and hope she moves away from such stereotypical plot lines.

On the upside, this was well-written. I didn't quite understand the distinction between the types of magic, as it seemed all over the place, but with a little work the world-building could really shine.
