The world is on the verge of apocalypse. A designer drug contaminated with a mutated strain of the Porphyria virus, V5, has hit the streets of London. Humans are on the threshold of an evolutionary change that will bring about their extinction – they no longer need to be bitten to become Vampires. An ancient artefact, the Trinian Globe, has been stolen, and a sinister force is preparing to take control of Earths hidden gateways. Makayla Uriel is the one being that can stop the world’s inevitable destruction; and the one person least likely to. She lives on the edge – the fringe of a world that is not her own – where legend is reality. Most days she wants to escape what she is, a Seraphympire, a Vampire Seraphim with two souls, and a craving for rare bloods. When she is saddled with a new partner, she is forced to confront her demons – realising that it’s alright to trust another, even if it means sacrificing all that she has ever known. The clock is ticking. Will Makayla and an elite group of warrior’s, the Shadow Seekers, save the inhabitants of Earth from annihilation? Can they stop the global distribution of V5 and discover who is behind the burgeoning Newblood infestation before it’s too late? More importantly, will they recover the Trinian Globe before it’s used to destroy Earth? Who will triumph?

Seraphympire (Guardians of the Gateways) by author Renee Spyrou is a wonderful supernatural fantasy tale about "Makayla" a Seraphympire, who must find the Trinian Globe and stop a deadly virus wiping out humanity. I have been a fan of vampires since my teens so I may be a bit bias :) The reader quickly becoming engulfed in the world the author seamlessly creates for her readers. Quite frankly, Renee simply amazes me with the amount of effort she puts into this book. Seraphympire is a story combining many incredible elements, including horror, desire, suspense, fantasy and a deep dark intensity that will leave the reader engrossed and reading long into the night. The moment I finished the story and read the final word, I went on-line to get info on the next instalment in the Guardians of the Gateways series. So I'm looking forward to "The Keeper of the Key" :D

Exciting ride!

At first I admit I was a little overwhelmed and thought I'd end up confused but I'm so glad I stuck with it! There were so many turns that I never saw coming. This is a serious rollercoaster ride full of adventure, twist, and turns. While it seemed to have some familiarity to it, it was also a story unlike any other I've ever read. Looking forward to reading the next.

I was recommended this book by the owner of the hotel i was on holidays in Kalymnos Greece earlier this month, the guy said that the author was a relative of his and that the book was good and it was worth reading. And so I started reading it. At the beginning I thought it was a bit girly for me, but as the book was progressing I understood I have made a mistake, I couldn't put it down, I have finished it within 2 days. I really don't want to post any spoilers from the book because fiction readers should really read it!
I am going to buy the second book very soon because I really want to see how the story continues! I hope the second book is as good as the first one

A great supernatural read! I want to start this review off by saying I’m not a big fan of vampire books. With that being said, this story takes a whole new spin on the usual vamp plot. Even if you aren’t big into fantasy themes, don’t brush this book aside. There is more going on than just vampires prancing around and drinking each other’s blood.

To dumb the storyline down, Makayla Uriel and her vamp group must save the world from a drug called V5 (a drug that can turn individuals into vampires without being bitten). There is a whack load of other side-plots going on too, but that’s the key issue in the book.

Be sure not to read any of this novel after sipping on too much wine. I tried one night and had to reread it all over the next day. Some books can be read half-drunk. This is not one of them. The plot wasn't carved lazily. It’s very intricate and each scene has a purpose that needs to be understood. There is a lot going on and a large cast, but it’s all relative. I believe the character plots will extend into the second book as well, hence why they all get such deep page time. The author does a great job of detailing her characters and really giving them a sense of structure/personality. The same goes for her descriptions of settings and places.

I’ve never read a vampire book like this before. If you’re trying to decide whether or not to read it, maybe because the genre isn’t your favorite, just do it. I’m excited to read the next one, so the author obviously knows how to create suspense. I’m a critical ass when it comes to the genre, but this writer passed my judgement.

It’s a dark book, which is what it should be. It’s VAMPIRES – not ponies! (A+). Love is streamed throughout it, but it isn’t sappy/overpowering, which I liked. (I didn’t envision Edward Cullen while reading it – a big win!). The main character, Makayla, is kind of a snarky bitch. (Another A+. I hate cute/sweet protagonists, and Makayla has reasons for being hard, so I liked her right from the very beginning). There are plenty of twists that make you want to keep reading, and the ending makes you want to pick up the second book right away (even though I need to go the f**k to sleep!!)... I’ll be sure to blame Renee Spyrou for the dark bags under my eyes tomorrow (haha!).

Overall, I would definitely recommend it! :)

Enjoyed this overall. There was lots going on with this book - lots of subplots and characters and world building - but since it's a series I hope that these will get resolved in the next couple of books.

This was an interesting take on the vampire/ angel genre. Lots of action violence and horror.

A good solid start to the Guardians of the Gateways series. I've never read a story about a schizophrenic vampire. :) Some original creatures and unique settings make it an interesting read. It lays the ground work for the rest of the trilogy. I can not wait to see what happens next. Well done Renee for writing your debut novel. Bring on part 2. I feel the series is just beginning.

I enjoyed 'SERAPHYMPIRE: Guardians of the Gateways' for its large cast of diverse and richly-textured characters, their shifting loyalties, and the epic-level of violent emotions at play. It definitely works as Paranormal Fantasy Romance, a vampire tale with a difference. Kayla/Makayla makes a complex, sympathetic, and visceral double heroine. Alexander, Zack, Reece, and the tangibly evil Zobiana all combine to create an above average vampire tale. Overall the characters are both believable and larger-than-life, a nice balance. The plot would benefit from a tighter focus, perhaps set within a 3-Act frame. Even so, it was always clear what each character wanted, why, and the decisions and actions they each take in trying to reach their goals. So the characters' roles within the plot works fine. The climax in Act 3 is especially good, and succeeds in bringing Makayla's story to a satisfying, provisional, and resounding close. Her struggle will continue in Book 2 of Guardians of the Gateways.

Loved the book , really nice and catchy story , really looking forward to the second one! Nice fiction vampire story that unfolds throughout the book!
all the characters are described really good and the story is easy and nice to follow !!
I like the special abilities each of the Characters have, it makes each one of them unique and special.
I love the turnovers of the story, and the fact that there where things happening you didn't see coming.
Finally i loved the story flow all the events spread nicely in the book with a logical sense.
The end leaves you with your mouth wide open and with lots of questions to be answered in the next books which i cannot wait to get to my hands!

Wow. What an utterly interesting concept and change on the vampire world. I absolutely loved how messed up, smart mouthed and kick-ass the main heroine, Makayla was. I loved her counterpart, Kayla as well but Makayla was the star of the show.
A larger book then what I usually read but I was thoroughly entertained as we transcend into different worlds and introduced to new warriors. I love all the characters within her group that fight alongside Makayla and how they interact with one another in the most entertaining ways.
Makayla is very rigid in personality but only to protect herself and the demons of her past. I love the darkness and the backstories to all the characters. Not one of them are unscathed and although in a Fantasy built world, which is thoroughly explained and created- none of them have truly come out from that whole, which is very realistic in our everyday lives.
I loved the flashbacks to her ‘darker’ time when she slaughtered through camps, villages and empires. It truly gives you the feeling of who she was and what she fights against from becoming once again.
I loved the chemistry between herself and Alexandra. A complete compelling and drawn in romance filled with lust. The build-up, inability to resist and Alexandra’s patience really set’s the mood for something magical. Might I comment on how much I loved their first kiss scene in the lecturer’s room! Loved it!
There is just so much to go on about this book but if I continue I will write a novel of a review as to why I liked this book so much. I loved being sucked into Renee’s well researched, dark and mysterious world. Give me more please! Well done Renee!!!
