Chick-lit which works for a guy.

I like to read outside my comfort zone and sometimes I regret it, but this one kept me reading and it took me a while to work out why. It dawned on me that it’s almost as if it’s a female oriented story written for for a male brain.

Perhaps in another author’s hands the story might have been un-necessarily dragged out (to the detriment of the story), but Ms Sanders has recognised the charm in HER telling of HER story was in pushing the pace. She’s told a very human story with tragedy, loss and hope without getting bogged down in excessive prose. The result is a fast read that’s perfect for a guy’s first foray into the realm of women’s fiction, and quite enjoyably so.

Abbreviated, yet rapidly paced tale of the effects of a tragedy on a marriage. Ludicrous what she put up with, neither seeking treatment for the devastating crisis or its effect on their relationship. Insane what she allowed sans intervention.I've never seen flamboyant infidelity ignored quite like this, except for details given for an AP barely part of the story. Then as if on a quandary of how to proceed....whoopsies,another tragedy! Dude finally snaps too at the potential loss of his wife as she lay in intensive care. She heard all his apologies while in coma.Boom, all is forgiven! Fresh start, leggy, big boobed blonde AP who suffered betrayal of infidelity, so became it in joke fashion remains unbeknownst to wife left in rear view as if mirage! 😂 Sheesh!

I was given a copy by the author in exchange for an honest review.

When Darkness breaks was a very emotional story, one I just couldn't put down once I started it. This couple faces some very difficult and tragic situations and it is up to them to figure out a way to get through, but will they do it together? This was a wonderful story about how our decisions impacts everyone and everything we do and just how strong you have to be to stand by them. I loved this book and I look forward to reading more from this author.

WHEN DARKNESS BREAKS by Traci Sanders - review

When Darkness breaks is not a typical read I would pick up, but it is definitely a good idea to challenge oneself to read outside one's predictable reading niche.
The story deals with a typical modern marriage, although the characters face more than the common falling into a rut and getting estranged from one another.
The author tackles middle aged crisis, marital stagnation instigated by lack of communication, the usual whatifs and couldhaves in career choices, taking the time we have for granted, miscommunication of family members and friends, marital betrayal, lack of emotional and physical intimacy, and reaching a point in life when you realize you have not become what you had hoped for, nor is your life anything like you dreamed it would be.
Underneath it all, underneath all those sadly everyday problems so many families and marriages go through, lies an extra secret - a horrible tragedy which started the whole problem, and justifies the characters' decisions to a certain degree, as none of us truly know what we would have done in such a situation. The author lovingly explains each characters' point of view, never judging or taking sides, which is quite difficult to do, and manages to tell the story in a calm and even tone, not succumbing to the need to overdramatize, add unnecessary spectacular elements or force the reader into an opinion. This being the authors' first adult piece of writing, it will be interesting to see how she develops her style further, with more confidence and perhaps ventures into new genres as well.
The author is romantic, believes in forgiveness and redemption and provides them for her characters mercifully, stressing how frail our lives are, how fleeting time is and how important honesty is in human relations. Through all this, as depressing as these problems may sound, the author manages to keep a positive attitude, so the read is not 'heavy' at all, and she guides her characters to a hopeful ending. I would recommend this story to anyone interested in stories about marriage and family, looking for optimistic solutions and guidance to a fresh start.

‘When Darkness Breaks” by Traci Sanders deals with two topics everybody is familiar with, “overcoming tragedy” and “overcoming unexpected success”.

The young couple, Amber and Drake, has a picture perfect life. Love, two wonderful children, an adorable house! But, of course, both of them are reaching for higher goals. In Amber’s case, her mom seems to be a part of it. “Her Amber would have the hottest career… ”, but two pregnancies seem to divert Amber’s career path. Mom is not too pleased. When finally all career steps fall together, it is too much for both, Amber and Drake.

Both of them are offered a fantastic position at the same time, but as bad-luck has it at the opposite ends of the country. A heated, emotional debate follows in the car and Drake has an accident and kills a young boy, though he is not found at fault. Emotionally scarred the family leaves for New York so Drake can accept his position and Amber becomes a stay at home mom. Drake is unable to cope with the pressure of guilt and the job; slowly but surely his life falls apart. I am not into spoilers, so readers will have to find out for themselves how Amber and Drake maneuver their way of this situation.

It’s the little details that make this story enchanting and bring it home.

“… She stopped when she noticed her children’s handprints embedded into the paver stones. Her fingers traced the tiny outlines….”

This charming book conveys hope and makes readers think. Lie is about decisions. Which one is it going to be?

When Darkness Breaks by Traci Sanders is a touching story of a couple who struggle to overcome a terrible tragedy; a tragedy that almost destroys their family. Amber and Drake have everything a young married couple could ask for; Amber has a great career and Drake has the flexibility to be a stay at home Dad, they have a lovely home, and two beautiful children.
Suddenly their lives are turned upside down when both are offered exciting career opportunities. While arguing about whose career has more importance, as Drake drives them home from dinner their car hits a young boy, killing him. Although Drake is not found responsible he is devastated by the accident and his life begins a downward spiral. Unable to cope with what happened he begins to drink heavily and even engages in extra-marital affairs. Meanwhile, Amber is left to raise their children, feeling alone and abandoned.
When another accident occurs, Drake must face the reality that nothing is more important than his wife and family. This is a story of overcoming tragedy and learning to value what is truly important in life. As I followed Drake and Amber through the ups and downs of their life I shared their emotional journey. This is a tender story that incorporates some Christian faith into a sweet love story. Well written and easy to read I recommend it to anyone who enjoys a story of hope.

This story is a short, fast read about what it means to really love someone, marriage, choices, tragedy and forgiveness. The story was entertaining and I read it straight through.

I recommend this book - it will make you put yourself in the couple's situation, break your heart and make you think about what it means to be married and experience tragedy. It also had a good ending full of hope!

It brought many emotions to the surface for me and made me wonder what I'd have done in that situation. Amber loved her husband and didn't want to give up on their marriage, which had once been great, and marriage is definitely not all roses. However, I think maybe I'm not as forgiving as Amber was to Drake.

He came to realize what he was about to lose, but he and Amber never really talked through his cheating or poor behavior and that's something I didn't really understand. It was missing a big "come to Jesus" moment but maybe it wasn't necessary due to his suffering.

This is a good debut novel, one that was able to elicit many emotions, make you think about what you'd do in the same situation and realize that things could change at the drop of a hat. Life is precious.

This is a very sweet, and sour, and again sweet story. One of those classical stories of a wonderful married life that suddenly hits the wall, or goes down the hill, with nothing to stop it. Until…

So was the sweet and sour marriage of Amber and Drake. They started well. Everything looked perfect. A loving home, and loving children. It looked like nothing could go wrong. That’s when the evil forces go to work. They put all sorts of stunts and stumbling block in front of anything in life that is going smoothly. They dangle forbidden carrots in front of straight forward people, and lure them away from the right way. They do anything that will bring about the fall of good man or woman. Mind you, they never go after the bad ones. In the end, they sit back and enjoy the result of the disaster they have caused.

Only God, with His the forces of good can intervene. For no merits of ours, God may chose to save the situation. I know that the bad will always be punish, and the good, always rewarded. Find out how this tussle between the good and evil ended.

The story dragged a bit, but I enjoy it. I enjoyed particularly the absence of violence even at the points of tension in the story. A goodly story indeed.

Reviewed revised after book revisions 1st Feb 2015 ...

This is a book about love lost and re-found. It is a story about when darkness breaks you, and all the doors are closed. We stand in that darkness with nothing but trust and hope, and it is only then that a door into the light will open. A tragedy breaks a family apart. A tragedy brings a family together. Amber's marriage is dying, and it doesn't take long for her to discover that the past doesn't always stay in the past.

This is a heart-warming short read, and one that many readers will relate to. The writing is tight, and is written in third person point of view. The story changes between character perspectives, but they each have their own clear section. The plot and pacing are good.

This is a debut novel for the author, who has previously written non-fiction books. I can only commend her for stepping right out of her comfort zone and for producing such a good first book. Following the revisions the author has undertook, I now award 5 out of 5 stars. I look forward to seeing more fiction offerings from this up and coming author.

With simplicity and reality, Traci Sanders 'When Darkness Breaks ' traces the lives of Drake & Amber, and the trial and tribulations that come along their way disrupting their happily married life.

This is a story that any modern family might be able to relate to. Every couple have their ups and downs in life; be it making hard career choices, a painful tragedy or loss, lack of communication, trust, intimacy between the partners and marital betrayal and infidelity. Life tests you this way, but it also teaches you that when darkness breaks you need to clutch on to that hope, find that inner strength and try to find your path back to the light.

There is one particular scene towards the end that really touched me, when Drake finding strength in the words written in the Bible revisits his past, forgives himself and finally washes out all the bitterness at the graveyard. This had a strong imagery.

Though a heavy subject matter, Traci's first attempt into adult fiction is commendable. The subject has been dealt delicately and is a breezy read keeping a positive attitude throughout and a hopeful ending.

Captivating and Inspirational 4.5 Stars

Drake and Amber Woods lead a blessed life. Their marriage was solid; they had two healthy happy children and they each had successful careers….life was good.
Soon cracks form in their flawless life. The Wood’s became overwhelmed by their own ambition and greed. During a heated argument, while driving, a life altering event befalls the couple. Their perfect life is shattered. Drake is consumed with guilt and remorse. He feels unworthy of his family’s love and turns to alcohol and adultery to cope.
Amber is determined to help heal her husband. She believes in the value of marriage and is committed to Drake and her children; but when all hope is lost even the strongest crumble.
Author Traci Sanders has captured the essence of this family’s pain, anger and suffering. The emotional depths of the main characters were deeply felt. At times, I became so involved in the story; I forgot this was a fictional read.

Count your blessings; count the important ones twice

I have a saying I like to "keep close" when I deal with unexpected things - "You cannot control life; in most cases it just happens to you. You can control how it affects you."

That Zandriism of mine came to mind when I read "When Darkness Breaks." The story entailed the dealings of family rocked by an external tragedy and how it affected their lives. The issue drove the family to make changes and those changes affected their immediate future. The struggles within the tale come from each of the main characters coming to grips with those changes and learning to have an understanding of how to get their own closure from it and deal with it (not always in the best of ways).

As the story reaches a critical juncture, plans made are sidetracked as life happens to the couple, and those plans are forced aside.

I really enjoyed the character development and I would recommend this book to readers that like contemporary literature, drama, and some romance in the mix.

Truly Heartbreaking, Yet Uplifting Story

As the story unfolded, I found myself asking two questions: What makes a strong woman? Is it the woman who stays in a bad marriage waiting for it to turn around, or is it the woman who doesn't take any crap, leaves, and starts her life over. Before reading "When Darkness Breaks," I would've said the latter. However, Amber is a strong woman to whom I can relate, and I think anyone who has been married, husband or wife, especially those in a bad marriage can.

When a marriage is damaged, for whatever reason, it is both hard to walk away and yet, it is hard to stay. One person's answer may not be another's. Amber fought for a marriage she knew had been good and with some faith and effort it could be great again.

I feel this is a well-written story that at times can break your heart, but in other times, lifts you up. It
gives you faith. Once you start reading, you will not want to put it down and could very easy keep you glued
to your seat and reading until the very end.

This is a compelling read, despite the story being centered around personal and marital struggles. The characters pull you in to their tale and you find yourself cheering for them to handle the obstacles they face. A horrible tragedy impacts their lives and leaves them emotionally distant and unable to cope. This novel covers their once happy marriage, the trials that pulled it apart, and where they're left in the end.

The subject matter addresses difficult issues that, while perhaps not the same in every relationship, are fundamentally issues we all face. The author builds the story well and the characters are well-developed. While I did find the story moving, I think the impact would have been greater if the main part of the story wasn't told as a flashback.

This is an easy read that pulls you in. The material addresses very real and challenging issues, but in a way that inspires perseverance and hope. Definitely worth the read.

"It's always darkest before the dawn"

I received a free copy of this novella in return for an honest review.
This first piece of fiction from Traci Sanders is an extremely accomplished offering. It is the touching story of a young married couple, who while at home in Kansas seem to have it all. A fatal accident precedes their move to New York for the husband's career and Drake never deals with the effects of that tragedy. He hides his pain by drinking and womanising. Amber is frustrated, not merely by her husband's behaviour, but the move having stifled her own career ambitions too. Something has to give. What happens next is ... well you need to read this story to find out.
I hope Traci Sanders treats us to some more works of fiction. There are an awful lot of readers who will appreciate the beginning, middle and ending of this story. There, you really are tempted to read it now aren't you?

Heartbreaking. Inspiring. Painfully real. Remarkably uplifting.

In her debut adult fiction novel, author Traci Sanders has revealed fantastic potential and promise. "When Darkness Breaks" tells the story of a marriage -- a family -- torn apart by staggering tragedy. But what impressed me so much about the approach Sanders took to tell her story was the overwhelming sense that while the circumstances were abnormally dramatic, in so many ways this was a story of real life. To do marriage well requires effort, and no matter how much love is present, you can't take it for granted. You can't assume that your spouse -- your family -- will be there waiting for you when you are ready to devote the care and attention which are deserved and needed.

I look forward to future novels by Traci Sanders. The potential is astounding.

Well-worth the cost and time spent reading: highly recommended

One of the commonest causes of accidents is a distracted driver. In this case Drake is not only distracted by a row with his wife, Amber, he’s furious to the point of accelerating the car, and the result is the death of a boy a few years older than the couple’s own two children.

The story records the way Amber and Drake cope, or fail to cope, with the disastrous blow to their already failing relationship, but Ms Sanders, despite her excellent, rounded, well-drawn characters, treats each section too clinically to make it an easy read.

At the back of the book Ms Sanders reveals that it is her first venture into fiction and I shall be looking out for her next; this is not perfect, but I read it to the end on a day when I planned to do other things.

This is the love story between Amber and Drake, the perfect love story, perfect life, marriage, kids and career unil one day changes everything.
Amber left her carreer behind to alow Drake o follow his dream, becaue when you love someone you want them to be happy.
They decided to change city thinking that this change would bring a new light to their life together, a second chance but things doesn't go hat way.
If you read with your heart you'll see that this can happen to you. One minute you are happy and the next you are forced to survive, to make it happen or to let it go.
And when you think that lifes can't go any worst, well think again.
I really enjoy reading this book because it get me thinking that if you really love someone you will do anything, even let him go....
But one thing i know for sure, if you love you'll do the impossible to survive.

When Darkness Breaks is a well-written novel with characters that I found myself engaging with emotionally from the first first chapters. It is not often that novels hold my attention so easily and yet this one had me hooked from Chapter 4 onwards. I found myself cursing at Drake and willing Amber onwards to improve her life and really enjoyed how their relationship developed. The style of writing flows easily and I didn't want this story to end. The second to last paragraph of the book is beautiful and a perfect way to end. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a short read that will absorb them quickly with its vivid characters and pace.

This was a short and easy read. I gave it 3 stars but was close to a four. I felt as though I didn't emotionally connect with the characters. It really is a wonderful story and there is a good message.

Things happen in life we can't control and we sometimes don't appreciate what we have. Amber and Drake have been through a lot. Drake wasn't very nice after a tragic event that happened but it took something to happen in order for him to see what he has.

This was the first adult fiction from the author. I think if she continues, she'll be even better. Looking forward to reading more from her.....Lissa

Traci Sanders' writing pulls you inside a marriage allowing you to experience the emotional roller coaster the couple faced in their relationship. We can all relate to having an argument with a spouse, however this couple's argument set in motion a terrible tragedy and then a chain of events that caused their marital bond to be stretched to the maximum. I found it hard to put down once I started it and read most of it on a few lunch breaks at work. Though I wish the author used more dialogue to move the story along and flesh out the characters, I still found it to be a good read. I look forward to reading more from Ms. Sanders.

A love story

I loved this book! It is a fast page-turner about a happy, successful and loving couple, how that drastically changes after a tragedy hits, and about the painful road to forgiveness. The accident leaves the couple devastated and unable to cope. To follow them as they deal with infidelity and ruined careers and then move to overcome the tragedy is both a painful and moving journey. Traci Sanders pulled me into the story with fluent, compelling writing and authentic and engaging characters, making it impossible to stop reading until I reached the ending.
A marvelous first novel told with great sensitivity and insight. Well done Traci Sanders! I truly recommend this book!

This very well written book was outside my usual genre but quickly drew me in.
The sanity and stability of a once happy family are tested to the extreme when everything changes following a tragic accident. It was easy to connect with the characters and I really felt for them when their lives imploded. The story is a reminder that love and happiness have to be worked at and should not be taken for granted.
An enjoyable highly recommended short read - I look forward to reading more from Traci Sanders.

This was a story woven straight from the lives of millions of people. I loved it because there was no fantasy, no horror, no cheap tricks to get the reader interested ... just good characters and a good story.

Life is not easy. Marriage is not easy. Parenting is not easy. Traci Sanders did a wonderful job of bringing her characters to life and brining the reader along the highs and lows of their shared experiences.

Nicely done.

When a couple's marriage turns sour, something has to change. Unfortunately, it changes with a bad accident. The husband, Drake, learns to take care of his wife and learns to love her again.

I would have liked to read more depth in this story and it could have easily been a longer story. But, with that sad, it is meant to be a short story, I think, and the writing was good.
