Peyton Cote #2

Fallen Sparrow

Rate this book
When U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agent Peyton Cote is called to a mysterious burned-out cabin, she has no idea it will lead her to reconnect with Dr. Sherry Duvall. Their re-acquaintance, however, comes under difficult circumstances--Sherry's brother is accused of murder, and her father and mother have just died in a murder-suicide. On the home front, single-mom Peyton is waging a different battle--helping son Tommy fight his learning disability. Amidst all this, a man is lurking who has only revenge on his mind, the kind of revenge that could cripple the nation and leave even those close to him as nothing more than fallen sparrows.

I always love a good murder mystery book so I decided to give this one a read. It’s an easy read and you quickly get into the story/characters.

By less than halfway through though, the story gets so ridiculous. And for whatever reason, there is this side story that the main characters son may have a learning disability. There was absolutely no reason to have this as part of the story.

End to top things off, the ending was so underwhelming. It was still an easy read and I wanted to finish the book, but definitely not wowed

Any book I read through to the end gets a three. This book, despite being set in Maine and having a woman protagonist and woman centric plot, barely made the grade. It was a bit of a plodder.

A pretty average read. Was tempted several times to give up on it but who can leave a crime novel midway?

Agent Peyton Cote is afraid of the explosion she has seen near her home and becomes even more frightened when they find a body after the fire with a bullet inside the cabin. She needs to find quickly what is happening on the land where the parents of her old friend Sherry died before it's too late and more people die.
Peyton Cote doesn't want to be just a mum, she wants to be a strong woman capable to solve a difficult case and bold to face the problems her son has at school. It's not easy to balance two hard works like being a police and a mother, and less if there's an old friend involved in a case and is not helping to solve her parents suicide.
Sherry had an abusive father, making her to be isolated during her childhood and adult life, but she didn't seem to care if the police can solve the strange events that are happening on her life.
In this slow case, everyone lies, it seems that the only one interested in solving the case are the police... why?
D.A. Keeley depicts how tough is living on a farm and survive with the money you made on your gains; difficult and desperate. And how in a small village everyone know that secrets are more valuable than money.
Will you sell your integrity for your farm?

Review: FALLEN SPARROW by D. A. Keeley

I love this series! FALLEN SPARROW is the second entry in the Peyton Cote mystery series, so hopefully will be followed by many more. Peyton is a U.S. Border Agent, and a single parent. After the obligatory seven years working the southern border with Mexico, she and son Tommy returned to her native Aroostook County, Maine, bordering Canada. While coping with her son's increasing difficulty at school, apparently including being bullied, Peyton investigates an abandoned cabin fire, and witnesses a mmurder-suicide of the parents of her childhood best friend. As is usual for Peyton Cote, when it rains it pours, so troubles from multiple directions abound.

Another great mystery by D.A. Keeley (John Corrigan) with the main character being Border Control Agent, Peyton Cote. I continue to enjoy these books because of the Northern Aroostook County setting, I had to concentrate on keeping all of the law enforcement characters straight in this book...FBI, CIA, Maine Warden Service, Border Patrol etc. and I wish the author would go a little easier on his portrayal of teachers....in both books, there have been some lines that did not shed a favorable light on my profession!
I've already ordered the third book in this series, that comes out in June.

It was a good story. It didn't keep me on the edge of my seat like I had hoped and actually took longer than expected to read but I had to know "who done it". But if you enjoy stories that are complex and suspenseful, then I would recommend picking it up!

I haven't read the other Peyton Cote main character books, but I was able to just pick this one up and enjoy it. Very well written. I would have started revealing the final outcome sooner because it seems to have wrapped up quickly, but that is just me. Overall it was an enjoyable story.
