Johnny Molloy is a self-employed outdoor writer based in Johnson City, Tennessee. A Christian -- member of First Presbyterian Church, native Tennessean and free-market capitalist, he was born in Memphis and moved to Knoxville in 1980 to attend the University of Tennessee. It is here in Knoxville, where he developed his love of the natural world that has since become the primary focus of his life.

It all started on a backpacking foray into the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. That first trip, though a disaster, unleashed an innate love of the outdoors that has led to his spending over 100 nights in the wild per year, over the past 20 years, backpacking and canoe camping throughout our country and abroad. Specifically, he has spent over 650 nights in the Smokies alone, where he cultivated his woodsmanship and expertise on those lofty mountains.

In 1987, after graduating from the University of Tennessee with a degree in Economics, he continued to spend an ever increasing time in the natural places, becoming more skilled in a variety of environments. Friends enjoyed his adventure stories, one even suggested he write a book. Soon he was parlaying his love of the outdoors into an occupation.

The results of his efforts are 44 books.

I purchased this book to compliment my copy of Waterfalls of the Southern Appalachians which my husband and I used 25 years ago when we visited Smoky Mountain National Park on our honeymoon. On the month of our anniversary this year, we planned a trip to revisit some of the waterfalls that we saw on our honeymoon. It was a great trip and this guide was extremely helpful in finding some of the out of the way sites and details that we would never have known were there without it.

We really enjoyed visiting the pioneer homesite and cemetery on the hike to Fern Branch Falls and got a little bit confused on our hike along Lynn Camp Prong/Middle Prong Trail. I do wish there had been warnings about the narrow lanes along the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail. We had a hard time passing cars parked on or in the road in the popular areas in our big truck. I also wish there had been more information about facilities at each trailhead. I realize that can change but it would have been really helpful information to know for planning to stop and not have to backtrack to a campsite or picnic area where there are facilities.

If you're planning a visit to the waterfalls in the area, I recommend.

This book is a great resource for finding trails. It lists them in categories like good for families, good for swimming, etc. and gives clear directions that helped us more than once!
