Enrique Vila-Matas is a Spanish author. He has written several award-winning books that mix genres and have been translated into more than thirty languages. He is a founding Knight of the Order of Finnegans, a group which meets in Dublin every year to honour James Joyce. He lives in Barcelona.

‘Only because the past is dead are we able to read it.’

There is a hole in the literary heart that has not, cannot, be filled since the passing of Jorge Luis Borges. Never has the metaphysical universe been more aligned with our own to where a reader will wonder which reality they walk and breathe within. Luckily, we have the Enrique Vila-Matas to abate the agony. Originally published in 1985, A Brief History of Portable Literature has finally surfaced to the English speaking world in brilliant and dexterous translation by Anne McLean and Thomas Bunstead. The comparison to Borges is easy, but it also cheapens an inventive work that stands on its own prowess as more than just a marvelous harnessing of its influences and predecessors. Vila-Matas envisions a secret society, the Shandies, populated by artists you know and love - from Borges himself to Witold Gombrowicz, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Man Ray, Salvador Dali, Federico García Lorca, and Aleister Crowley among countless others - working in cahoots to promote their idealized artistic notions: Portable Literature. Filling-in or giving impetus to the gaps of reality, Vila-Matas creates a Portable Literature of his own in this 87pg novella that chronicles the adventures and break-up of this group as they traverse the globe in their often suicidal quest for artistic perfection. In a cavalcade of literary allusions fueled by highbrow hilarity, Vila-Matas breathes a life into the Shandy history that rewards the well-read reader yet is still welcoming to those on the outside of the references in this fascinatingly fantastical reimagining of literary history.

Vila-Matas constructs a jovial playground using a cunning imagination and wit as mortar between the bricks of literary history. While the Portable conspiracy is fiction, this ‘Brief History’ is still inevitably a vast history lesson as each allusion or joke or activity is sure to send readers scrounging their resources to further read up on each author, novel¹, or simply to find the truth serving as roots from which the fiction can flower. The in-jokes are in great abundance and readers will find great joy and a sense of validation and accomplishment when they comprehend the highly high-brow humour within. However, to be well-versed is unnessecary—even the biggest of bookworms will discover new authors and find many new ideas to sink their teeth into—and the book will still be a riotous misadventure through the African plains and Paris cafes frequented by the Shandies.

The secret society or literary conspiracy is a group founded primarily on their love for things that are small, such as microscopic handwriting which naturally finds Robert Walser as a member, and portable like the slim volume of A Brief History itself. The beliefs, ideals and manifestos grow and expand with the growth of the group and their frequent meetings, with the Shandies denouncing marriage, celebrating and exposing a beautiful and appetizing side of suicide (much to the chagrin and protestation of local officials), and crafting their art in unique and progressive ways. It is even required that all Shandies become involved with a doppleganger, known as the Odradeks (Kafka fans rejoice).

‘The conspiracy needed to appear in the eyes of the world like the stunning celebration of something appearing and disappearing with the arrogant velocity of the lightning bolt of insolence...It is the expression of a rebellious, scandalous, immortal ego imposing itself as a way of exposing itself.’

Brief History is the ultimate literary fangirl/boy-service, offering imagined parties where idolized authors co mingle over drinks and conversation and implying that famous lines from, say, The Great Gatsby, are actually references to some such Shandy soiree. Even actual quotes are reappropriated to fit the conspiracy. These fictional events are charged with a great sense of wry humor that keeps a smile on both the face and the intellect.

Inevitably, the group will face a traitor in their midst and must face the consequences of existing in a belief system so weightless and transitory, a high-plot device in a plotless novel in keeping with the sly in-joke literary humor. Vila-Matas manages to consistently keep the novel above the waterline of stuffiness and writes with a forward charging pace and fluidity that will keep your eyes locked in the groove of words and ignore the turning of the clock. This ‘chronicle’ of history that never was, or almost was, or should have been, is a wealth of good natured entertainment and insight that scratches the back of the intellect in the most satisfying way.

¹ As it is evident that this book finds a valuable influence in the works of Jorge Luis Borges, I quite enjoyed the technique of citing both real and fictional works of fiction similarly to those written about in the works of Borges. It always seems the ones most appealing turn out to be imaginary, and I respect the creativity behind summarizing and analyzing a novel to bring it’s brilliant ideas and theories to existence, but sidestepping the obligation of actual having to write that novel.

This little booklet from Vila-Matas is not easy to access. Still, he's downright wacky, maybe a little too much.
The author invents a community of "shandys" about the English work of the 18th century, "The life and opinions of Tristram Shandy, gentleman" by Laurence Sterne. Whose character is also somewhat nutty, and Vila-Matas's footnote reminds us that Shandy is synonymous with merry, wacky, and talkative.
This community of "shandy," he creates, brings together authors or artists little known to the general public who favor minimalism in expression and go from town to town to celebrate portable literature secretly.
As usual, Vila-Matas mixes real and invented places and authors. We do not find it at all, but following this one is a little more challenging than others. And I did not see the highly festive atmosphere of Laurence Sterne, whose Tristram makes us smile all the time despite the sometimes absurd subjects offered to the reader. Here, the parody is at the rendezvous, but the vision is less favorable; it must say that we are talking about what will become of art.

El libro es divertidísimo, hasta chistoso, un disparate no carente de sentido en el que se ensalza lo inútil, lo liviano, lo intrascendente, la locura, la irresponsabilidad, lo voluble, la vanguardia, la falta de objetivos, lo chiflado, el nomadismo, la insolencia, la “negritud”, la frivolidad, lo irreal, la indisciplina, el azar, lo críptico… una admirable y, como cualquier otra, fracasada tentativa de ser héroes en “esa batalla perdida que es la vida”, una invitación a vivirla literariamente, a bucear en lo desconocido para intentar “desfondar el fundamento que nos subyace” y hacerlo sin miedo al naufragio, pues la vida, igual que cada libro, “debería contener en sí la posibilidad del fracaso”.

No les contaré demasiado. Si todavía no les he asustado, tienen curiosidad y no temen a la decepción del fracaso, tendrán que leerla para saber qué es la literatura portátil y quiénes y qué son los portátiles, aunque ya les avanzo que no les resultará fácil pues es una literatura que no existe; o qué son los shandys, esos personajes obsesionados con la muerte, de sexualidad extrema y tensa convivencia con la figura del doble y la extrañeza consigo mismo, entre otras grandes cualidades; o cuál es el motivo por el que conspiran en su logia secreta, o cuál es el problema que tienen con sus odradek, “pequeños bastardos no nacidos de madre”, y estos con sus golem, y estos con sus bucaresti; o su gusto por todo aquello que “surge y desaparece con la arrogante velocidad del relámpago”; o en qué forma las mujeres fatales estuvieron presentes tanto en el inicio de la sociedad secreta como en la aparición en su seno de la palabra “suicidio”, o cómo la posibilidad del suicidio, un escape siempre disponible, les devolvió el sentido del humor en la convicción de que, aunque no hay razones para vivir, tampoco las hay para morir: “La vida no merece que nos tomemos el trabajo de abandonarla”, pero si hay que hacerlo, por favor, que sea lo más literariamente posible, que sea en el Ritz.

Si todo esto que aquí les escribo les parece un despropósito, no se me amilanen, lean el libro como “fuente inagotable de nuevas y estimulantes sensaciones”, o como una sucesión de chismes, dimes y diretes, sin que ello les lleve a vergüenza pues no otra cosa son las novelas de Proust o Henry James. Tómenlo como un espacio donde perderse en soledad, aun sin evitar la amargura de la propia soledad, o como un modo de enriquecer su geografía del placer o por la loca esperanza de que, en medio de la lectura, su odradek se le pose en el hombro como “la más aguda y creativa de las violaciones”. Afróntenlo como un juego, como una forma de ver de otra forma, como un viaje a otro mundo, el que nos propone el autor, uno sin demasiado peso, nada importante ni grave, lejos del otro, “ese reducto de imbecilidades, de abdicaciones, de renuncias y de obtusos encuentros”, uno en el que cuentan infinidad de historias, que es el placer esencial de todo viaje, y qué buen libro no es en realidad un gran viaje.


P.S. Si a pesar de todo la novela les parece un truño, pónganla a calzar la mesa que cojea: harán un justo homenaje a lo portátil y su inclinación por lo “soltero”, porque personas y cosas pierdan la función natural para la que fueron creadas.

Ayaklı edebiyat ansiklopedisi ve edebiyat sihirbazı Enrique Vila-Matas’tan yine saçlarınızı dik dik edecek bir kitap. Montano Hastalığı ve Bartleby ve Şürekası ile gönlümü fetheden Matas bu kez sadece edebiyatçı değil görsel sanatçıları da kalemine dolamış. Makaraya aldıkları aykırı kişilikler ise ait oldukları sanat akımlarının farklılıklarıyla bilinen sanatçılar.

Geleneklerden ve standartlardan (çoğunluğa göre) oldukça kopuk Dada’cılık, sürrealizm, fütürizm, fovizm, okultizm, mistisizm hatta kübizm gibi statükoyu yıkan, kabul gören doğruları ve normları sorgulayan, eleştiren akımların kurucusu veya ileri gelenlerini ele almış. Bu “portatif”veya “taşınabilir edebiyat” meraklıları, kendilerine “Shandy”ler adını vermişler. Neden bu ismi kullandıklarını okuyunca göreceksiniz. Dünyaya geliş nedenlerinin, doğalarının en kuytu ve çapraşık köşelerini dışa vurmak olduğuna inanıyorlar. Arsızlığı güzel sanat olarak kabul ediyorlar.

Anlatıların kurmaca mı gerçek mi olduğu konusunda zaman zaman tereddütte kalsam da, kurmaca bölümlerin “ateş olmayan yerden duman çıkmaz” misali bir geçmişleri olduğuna ve bu nedenle Matas’ın mizahçı sivri diline düştüklerini kabul ettim. Ancak yazarın ağını çok geniş tuttuğunu düşünüyorum çünkü çok sayıda sanatçı ağa takılmış. Çünkü kitap arka sayfa tanıtım yazısında bahsedilen isimlerden çok fazlasını kitap içinde okuyorsunuz (L.F. Celine, W. Gombrowicz, R. Walser, W. Faulkner gibi...).

Bazı isimler için internette araştırma yaptığımda Matas’ın abartmadığını farkettim. Gerçekten çılgın tipler. Çoğu kafayı sıyırmış veya ucundan kurtarmış. Enis Batur’un deyişiyle “şakülden inhiraf” tipler. Hatta ilk anda W. Benjamin, F.S. Fitzgerald, F. Garcia Lorca’nın ne işi var bunların arasında diye düşündüm sonra onların da birer “shandy” olduklarına ikna oldum.

Kısa ve mizahi nitelikte olmasına rağmen yorucu bir metin. Zaten Matas kolay birşey yazar mı ? Bundan önceki kitapları da hem yormuş hem merak uyandırmıştı. Edebiyat ile çok yakından ilgilenenlere ya da üşenmeyip araştıracaklara hitap ediyor. E. Vila-Matas’ı bu kitapla tanımayın lütfen, Montano Hastalığı iyi bir seçim olur.

Kitabı 27 günde mi okusaydım, bitirdiğimde benim de bir “obradek”im var mı diye düşünmedim değil, “golem” nedense aklıma bile gelmedi.

Neyse okuyacak olursanız “iyi günde olsunlar”...

Bu bombaya üç tam bir de yarım yıldız verdim. Bence ‘Yarım Yıldız’ tam Shandylik bir kavram. Hikaye edilesi ve hemen fırlatılıp atılası bir güzelliği var. Mesela adı Yarım Yıldız olan bir hologram heykel hayal ediyorum; yüz tanıma özelliğine sahip Yarım Yıldız, ona yaklaştığınız anda ruh halinize uygun bir hologram biblo kusuyor. Yalnız dikkat edin, bu sizin dijital odradek’iniz olmasın. Not: Bu yılki okumalarımda sözde rastlantısal olarak önce Enis Batur’un Mekik’inde, bir süre sonra Sebald’ın Kır Evinde İkamet’inde, ardından Fleur Jaeggy’nin Disiplinli Güzel Günler romanının daha ilk satırlarında ve eyvah ki bu kitapta Shandy’lerden biri olarak karşıma çıkan Robert Walser da sanırım benim odradek’im. Yirmi yedi yaşındaki haliyle belirip yazdığı her portatif sözcüğü okumaya çağırıyor beni.

playful and profound, a brief history of portable literature traces the enigmatic shandy movement (and its members) through assorted hijinks, all the while offering a singular view of both art and artist. vila-matas peppers his novella with myriad literary references, humorous asides, winking nods, and imaginative re-creations (all but requiring subsequent re-readings). a brief history of portable literature would find good company amidst the likes of cortázar's fantomas versus the multinational vampires and the prodigious output of assembled oulipians.

Tenho uma dúvida recorrente que, às vezes, é quase um problema de difícil resolução:
- Que livro vou ler agora?
Olho à minha volta e vejo cerca de oito centenas de capas lindas que me acenam e suplicam:
- Eu, eu, eu,...
Como não posso ler todos de uma vez (bem que gostaria...) recorro a alguns truques. Desta vez pedi ajuda a Enrique Vila-Matas que já me acudiu noutras alturas, dando-me a conhecer grandes obras e seus autores (embora, algumas vezes, me tenha feito correr para a livraria mais próxima).
Pensei que lendo um livro cujas personagens são escritores estaria a garantir o meu sossego por durante uns tempos mas, desta vez, Vila-Matas trocou-me as voltas: ou retorno ao Tristram Shandy (nem pensar); ou leio poesia (e esses escolho eu); ou vou aprender "estrangeiro" (para ler Andrei Biely, Paul Morand, Maurice Blanchot e mais uma catrefada de autores que, com grande pena, desconheço e não encontro traduzidos).

Nesta História Abreviada, Vila-Matas nomeia vários escritores, pintores e compositores que, em 1921, se unem numa sociedade secreta, cuja finalidade é criar obras de arte minúsculas que caibam numa pequena mala. Da pesquisa que fui fazendo sobre os artistas, concluí que a maioria pertenceu à corrente artística Dadaísta (Marcel Duchamp, Francis Picabia, Max Ernst, Man Ray, Jacques Rigaut, Salvador Dali, Tristan Tzara) e o comportamento das personagens (de que se destaca a irreverência e o pessimismo) enquadra-se nas características do Dadaismo.
Pela sua natureza - mais de ensaio e biográfico do que romance - este livro não me proporcionou uma leitura emocionante, sendo até um pouco confuso e aborrecido nalgumas passagens, mas valeu a pena pelo que aprendi nas pesquisas que fiz durante a leitura (aprendo sempre com este senhor).

Recomendo a leitura de Enrique Vila-Matas, desta obra a quem se interessar pelo tema, e das posteriores: Bartleby & Companhia, O Mal de Montano e Dublinesca que são um paraíso para quem gosta de ler sobre escritores.

I really enjoy Enrique Vila-Matas. He's one of those authors I read everything by. So I was delighted to come across A Brief History of Portable Literature. This brief, playful book is a pleasure, even though I spent as much time looking up the writers mentioned as I did in reading the actual text. And that's even with the fact that I seem to have similar tastes to Vila-Matas and had read more than half the writers mentioned.

Portable literature seems to take its life from Marcel Duchamp's Box in a Suitcase. It is a literature of the small, that which is transitory, that which is, even, futile. It is filled with doppelgangers and Odradeks (from the Kafka story) and has its home in Prague, Paris, and under the ocean.

It would take longer to describe this book than to read it and the description would drain the text of all its fun. If you like Vila-Matas (and it's hard for me to imagine there are people who do not), then you'll certainly enjoy this book.

Diğer kitaplarına göre sayfa sayısı az olsa da, Matas'la tanışmak için uygun kitap değil kesinlikle. Nedeni de şu: Matas'ın en belirgin özelliği edebiyat ve kültür tarihine dair şaşırtıcı bilgisi bana kalırsa. Montano Hastalığı'nı okurken çok şaşırmıştım; atıfta bulunmadığı alıntı yapmadığı yazar, hakim olmadığı bir akım yok sanki. Montano Hastalığı özelinde, Matas'ın trenine binip Edebiyat Tarihi yolculuğuna çıkmak epey keyifliydi.

Portatif Edebiyatın Kısaltılmış Tarihi'nde, Matas'ın ''portatifler'' olarak adlandırdığı sanatçıların kurmaca!? tarihine tanık oluyoruz. Karşımıza çıkan isimlerden aklımda kalanlar Walter Benjamin, Duchamp, Gombrowicz, Baudelaire ve aklıma gelmeyen bir sürü bir sürü ismin portatiflik uğrana yaptıkları anlatılıyor bu kitapta. Ve inanın, hiç de öyle akıl alır şeyler değil yaptıkları :) Saçmalıklar, yanlış anlaşılmalar, zırvalamalar ve kendin- birbirini kandırmalarla örülü portatiflerin tarihi. Kont Dracula’nın yoksul akrabaları bucarestiler, golemler ve obradekler hakkında bir kitap. Vila-Matas’nın en eğlenceli ve mizahi kitabı bana kalırsa. Yazarı tanıyanlar yazdığı her şeyde edebiyatın olduğunu hatta edebiyat tarihini kurguladığını bilir. Ama bu sefer yalnızca edebiyat değil modern sanatlara da yer açmış.

Laurence Sterne’ün abidesel romanı Tristram Shandy’nin muzipliğinden esinlenerek shandy diyorlar kendilerine. Bana züppelikleriyle ünlü dandylere de alayla yaklaşan bir seçim gibi göründü.

Kitapta modernizmle özdeşleşen hemen herkes var. Devrimci Lenin, salyangozunu tasmayla gezdiren Dali, Kayıp Kuşak’ın yazarı Fitzgerald, Dadaizmin kurucusu Tzara, pisuvarların babası Duchamp. Kalıba girmeyi reddeden bu sanatçıları çok komik düzlemlerde bir araya getiriyor yazar. Tıpkı adı gibi küçücük bir kitap, keşke bir bu kadar daha olsa diyerek bitirdim.

A Brief History of Portable Literature-Enrique Vila-Matas

A unique, one-of-a-kind novella, reflective of the author’s long held interest in unintended journeys undertaken by writers and other artists. This is an early Vila-Matas book written in 1985 a full decade before his better-known Bartleby and Company, and Montano’s Malady.

Here he celebrates an ever expanding group of Dadaists, Surrealists, poets, painters, photographers and other artisans who lived in post WWI Europe. They all exist within a context of portability, they are for the most part, bachelors, melancholics and manics bordering on madness. They are open to the mysteries of life and death.

They belong to a group named the Shandys, with some association to Sterne’s The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy. Amongst the members are many artisans we are familiar with: Marcel Duchamp, Francis Picabia, Walter Benjamin, William Carlos Williams, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Georgia O’Keefe, Man Ray, Robert Walser, Salvador Dali, Aleister Crowley, Garcia Lorca, Bruno Schulz, and others we are unfamiliar with, or who may be invented: Hermann Kromberg, Walter Littbarski, Valary Larbaud and others.

The Shandys meet up in a series of cities: Vienna, Prague, Trieste and Paris. They interchange ideas and seek out Odradeks/golems/shadows and spirits possessed with unknown keys of knowledge. They discuss “the pros of short stories, fragments, prologues, appendices and footnotes, and the cons of novels”.

Dali’s Odradek “had a markedly merry and musical air” through which he became a creator of orgasmic pleasures.

Kromberg becomes possessed with Crowley’s spirit and, though often a sedentary soul, finds himself climbing mountains in the Kashmir where he falls to his death.

“Berta Bocado-moved by a sudden ambitiousness-is attempting to construct a total book: a book of books encompassing all others, an object whose virtues the years will never diminish”.


Scott Fitzgerald “has completed a novel about a person named Gatsby, a man confronting his past as he moves inexorably into nothingness”.

William Carlos Williams “who less like an American every day, entertains himself trying to solve all the arcane mysteries”.

Crowley” denounces any book that makes universal or pretentious claims”.

These lists of facts, quotes, “found” documents and critiques are reminiscent of David Markson’s novels and the short stories of Borges and Bolano, both of whom are well known influences for Vila-Matas.

Vila-Matas describes dedicated artisans who “placed a very high value on art’s secret demand: that the artist must know how to surprise, and be surprised by, what, though impossible, is”. The Shandys often appear to reside on the edge of madness, “plunging into the abyss of what sustains us, plumbing the depths of our foundations”.

As this imaginative group of searchers nears its end the “last” Shandy finds himself in a labyrinth

“where losing oneself takes practice. The art of wandering the streets of the imagination reveals the true nature of the history of the modern city…in solitude in the great metropolis spent as a wanderer, fully at leisure to daydream…gets lost in the labyrinth of Odradeks”.

This book holds special meaning to those of us who are serious readers/writers, searching ourselves for the mysteries and pleasures of life. Like the Shandys we begin

“collecting books as well as passions…the hunt for books, like sexual pursuit, enriches the geography of pleasure. This is another reason to drift in the world. As well as first editions and distinctly baroque books, he collects miniatures: postcards, pennants, toy soldiers…the love of small things underlies his liking for brevity in literature. For the last Shandy-for whim his book is another space in which to wander-his real impulse when people look at him is to lower his gaze, bow his head toward his notebook, look off into a corner, or better yet, hide his head behind the portable wall of his book.”

I highly recommend this book along with the other works by Enrique Vila-Matas mentioned at the start of this review.

This is dense as hell and I need to read it at least once more before I can feel like I have anything resembling a handle on it (so the four star rating is just provisional). It's dense in its references and allusions, which fortunately aren't just for show and actually contribute to the reader's understanding of the book (like with Kafka's odradeks). But a lot of them (most of them?) went flying over my head and I spent a lot of time looking things up while I read (though there's a reference to Andrei Bely on the very first page which made me very happy).

A lot of the reviews stressed the resemblance to Borges, which gave me the impression that this would be like one of his opaque labyrinths. And there's a bit of that, but at its heart this is a work of hilarious absurdism. The prose has a kind of breezy irreverence (which reminded me of Calvino) and is packed with non-sequiturs (members of the conspiracy are required to have "a fraught co-existence with doppelgängers"). It may be mystifying, but it's also hilarious.

Şaşırdım, bol bol gülümsedim, hatta bazı paragraflarda kahkaha attım. Edebiyat dünyasının, sanat ve sanatkarların bir kısmını böylesine süsleyerek sergilemek, yazarlardan, eserlerinden yola çıkıp alaycı ama ciddiyeti de elden bırakmayan bir üslup geliştirip aktarabilmek, yeniden, unutulmaz bir senaryo yazabilmek gerçekten güçlü bir dehanın göstergesi. Kısa bir kitap olmasından ve Villa-Matas hakkında belirleyici, merak uyandırıcı, etkileyici bir eser sayılmasından dolayı rahatlıkla önerebiliyorum. :)

Interesante artefacto para comprender ciertas etapas de la literatura, en este caso, portátil. Al principio desconcierta, puede llegar la duda si leerse como ensayo o como ensayo novelado, el caso es que Vila-Matas hace este pequeño viaje algo ameno mientras nos muestra fiestas, desvaríos, mujeres fatales y a los chiflados shandys.

Okuma yolculuğumda alakalı alakasız zamanlarda karşıma çıkan bir kitaptır .Bir dönem gaza gelmiş belkide can yayınları kampanyasında alıp kenarda unutmuşum .Yine benzer bir gaz dalgası ile yarı anlar şekilde okudum .

Yarı anlar diyorum çünkü ben bir umberto Eco , Jorge Louis Borges değilim .Neredeyse her cümle göndermeler ile dolu .Bereket versin bahsettiği yazarlardan az çok haberim var .Sadece yazarlar değil sanatçıları da eklemeliyim.

Shandy diye adlandırdığı yaşam biçimine yakın bir kaç yazarın otobiyografik kitaplarını okuduğum için okurken metin beni itmedi , hatta zaman zaman gerçeklik ve kurgu karmaşası yaşadım.

Another superb book by Enrique Vila-Matas. At the moment, he can do no wrong. This short little novel is the 20th century version of Marvel Comics 'The Avengers or DC comic's "The Justice League of America." What we have here is a secretive group called the Shandies, that consists of Marcel Duchamp, Georgia O'Keefe, Man Ray, and other great "modern" literary figures who meets up in distant cities as well as even in a submarine, to discuss literature. Literature that is based on the assumption of portable literature. Sort of the same nature as Duchamp's portable museum or inventory of his art work in a suitcase. Vila-Matas has an incredible imagination, but based on real people and real events. He specializes in re-writing literary history to his own liking. Right now, I think he is the most essential author. But to be honest, it is because he touches on all stuff that Ihave an interest in. Which is literature, books, and their authors. Especially the good ones.

DNF (didnotfinish). Yarısına kadar okudum. Kötü bir zamanda elime aldım galiba çünkü boğdu beni metin. Yazardan Bartleby ve Şürekası kitabını çok sevmiş ve okurken epey araştırma yapmıştım. Burada ilgilenmediğim ya da eserlerini henüz okumadığım epey sanatçı olduğu için merakımı çok cezbetmedi anlatılanlar. Resim sanatı ve Duchamp gibi modern performansçılar da cahil olduğum alanlar dolayısıyla okumak eziyet oluyor. Vila-Matas'ın zor bir anlatım dili olduğuna ilk kitabından aşinayım ama burada okuru ve çevirmeni bilerek zorlamak gibi bir amacı var sanki. Gerçekten gerek anlatım diliyle gerekse oyunlu metinleriyle garip bir yazar kendisi. Külliyatına aşina olanlar bu kitabı başlangıç yapmayın diyorlar ki hak veriyorum. Goodreads yorumlarına bakarsanız Montano Hastalığı, Suicidios ejemplares gibi kitapları daha çok beğenilmiş. Yazarın eserlerini okumaya devam edeceğim. Belki bu kitaba geri dönerim.

Kitaptan bana kalan tek bilgi Lenin'in gerçek isminin Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov olduğunu öğrenmek oldu. Kardeşime söyleyince sen asıl Stalin'in ismi nasıl değişmiş ona bak dedi. Bu da böyle bir anımdır.

Um Vila-Matas aquém das minhas expectativas, mas perfeitamente às custas do divertimento do autor com a sua escrita, o que merece logo meio perdão.
O mais giro nestes livros é sempre destrinçar ficção/realidade. Sempre óptimo em termos de quantificação do cinismo/ingenuidade da alma leitora. Exercício de auto-conhecimento ao nível dos questionários manhosos BuzzFeed, mas em não mentecapto-deprimente.

Αναγνώστης: Αρχικά (και αναγκαστικά), τουλάχιστον ημιδιαβασμένος και σχετικά γνώστης. Εν τέλει, κάπως γοητευμένος, κάπως μπερδεμένος, κάπως απορημένος. Ο παντελώς ανυποψίαστος θα αποφανθεί ότι πρόκειται περί μπούρδας.
Μελλοντική, δεύτερη ανάγνωση: απαραίτητη.

An experimental fiction on the major themes and lives of Dada movement , avant-garde revolution in European art and literature after 1st World war. The idea of a secret society of artists and writers who shut the reality of the world outside and dream for traveling together to share the stories forms the basis structure of this fiction. It’s complicated, illogical and chaotic.
