Very good, but intensely educational book for training all kinds of animals. Not for the average reader. Much more scholarly than I expected. This is for someone who wants to train animals for a living.

Really practical book on animal training. I really appreciate the author's practicality in her approach, without compromising animal welfare and the training relationship with the animal. I would recommend this book to colleagues.

The idea behind this book is interesting - looks at all the different types of animals training -- positive/ aversive- classical/operant etc, and then evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of each. Zeligs also considers different types of animals --predator and prey animals, such as dog versus a horse. Type of animal may predict how they respond to certain methods of training.

The problem I had with the book lay in its writing style. The quality of writing is quite uneven. Some of the writing is direct and clear but many other passages are filled with metadiscourse where the writer seems concerned with how the reader will take the message. So, the writer who uses metadiscourse sets the stage at the sentence level by providing many unnecessary words. For example-- Next we will consider how--or I am going to tell you.

I find this writing style distracting, but others may not even notice it. I would still recommend this book for people wanting to learn about the different training methods available for various animals and some points regarding benefits and drawbacks of each. I have been training dogs and birds for many years, so I don't consider myself a beginner. Not an expert either!
