Viimeisen vuosikymmenen aikana ymmärrys tunteiden merkityksestä on lisääntynyt oleellisesti.
Author of Emotional Intelligence and psychologist Daniel Goleman has transformed the way the world educates children, relates to family and friends, and conducts business. The Wall Street Journal ranked him one of the 10 most influential business thinkers.
Goleman’s Emotional Intelligence was on The New York Times best sellers list for a year-and-a-half. Named one of the 25 "Most Influential Business Management Books" by TIME, it has been translated into 40 languages. The Harvard Business Review called emotional intelligence (EI) “a revolutionary, paradigm-shattering idea.”
Goleman’s new book, Focus: The Hidden Driver of Excellence, argues that attention — a fundamental mental ability for success — has come under siege. Leadership that gets results demands a triple focus: on our inner world so we can manage ourselves; on others, for our relationships; and on the outer forces that shape our organizations and society itself.
His more recent books include The Brain and Emotional Intelligence, and Leadership: The Power of Emotional Intelligence - Selected Writings.
Daniel Goleman introduced the concept of emotional intelligence to psychology. This book presents some new insights into the relevant neuroscience discovered during the last several years. So while I looked forward to reading it, I wasn't expecting it to be only 78 pages. The chapters are very short and to the point, but a more comprehensive treatment would be welcome.
Goleman summarizes his emotional intelligence framework (self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relation management) and describes the brain areas involved in each. Sections are devoted to creativity, motivation, good and bad stress, empathy, psychopathy (only 1 page, however), neuroplasticity and neurogenesis. Most helpful to me were the sections on stress and empathy. Goleman's distinction between 'frazzle' and 'flow' describes the serious physical and cognitive problems that come with stress, and the methods to combat stress and develop 'flow'. In a state of flow, concentration is effortless, flexible, and joyful.
As for empathy, Goleman distinguishes between cognitive, emotional, and and motoric (empathic concern). Cognitive empathy is the most primitive kind (the extent of psychopaths' empathy, for example), being able to take another's perspective. Emotional empathy is the basis for feeling en rapport with others, and empathic concern is the prompt for acts of compassion - actually doing something.
The Brain and Emotional Intelligence (***) has some interesting ideas, and is a good summary of the relevant brain research, but doesn't have a whole lot of meat on it. I'd recommend Goleman's other books, or the works of Daniel Siegel for something more substantial.
A short but very fascinating read. Goldman covers the how emotional intelligence and the brain are linked; the different sections of the brain that are affected by stress, afflictive emotions, and how practicing mindfulness and relaxation techniques can help.
I tried reading Goleman’s original Emotional Intelligence book a few times (I even own it in a physical copy, shocking), but it is just very anatomy heavy for me and the writing style never fitted my likings. When I saw this book I thought it would be a new approach to his content on EI, but it turned out to be a summary. This book was short - which I didn’t know when I started - and a collection of updates on the original content, so it ended up being a good option for me since I never managed to finish the original.
Emotional Intelligence is such an important topic that it pains me that the main researcher on this area didn't manage to convey his ideas in a way that is consumable by the general population. The constant mentions of brain structures, areas and nerves, is a barrier for those that don't have knowledge on anatomy. A beginner on this topic would do better reading separate literature on the 4 domains of Emotional Intelligence - self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management - or reading this very summary in the form of a book and accepting the names of neuroregions as buzz words.
I was expecting a bit more, but it worked as a nice round-up of content.
It's a short and easy to read and understand introduction on the existing relations between various brain structures and our emotional manifestation. The part about the brain is presented rather briefly, the discourse going rather into the concrete of our daily behavior, which makes the book enjoyable and useful for a larger group of readers. I would have appreciated a larger development of the elements regarding brain research and science.
While part of the title claims 'new insights,' The Brain and Emotional Intelligence just summarizes what Goleman has already put out in some of his other books. It is a quick thumbnail synopsis and therein lies its value.
Do all educators love reading about brain research? Emotional, social, cognitive learning - you name it, our little ole brains actually have the ability to learn and grow in just the ways we need. Take that cell and think it, think it, think it--like watering a plant. Encouraging news :)
This publication provides an overview of the brain basis of emotional intelligence, offering insights from the latest and most solid studies conducted up to 2011. It builds on the emotional intelligence concept Goleman introduced in the 1990s, linking it with new brain research findings.
I found the book easy to read and insightful. I rated it 3 stars, as many of the findings were familiar from other sources.
Key takeaways:
- Stress management through daily practices: Goleman emphasizes the importance of regular activities that enhance focus and relaxation, such as meditation, sports, walking, or creative pursuits. These practices improve stress recovery, enhance vagus nerve function (critical for regulating heartbeat and calming the body), and promote better sleep, ultimately protecting against the harmful effects of chronic stress. - Enhancing concentration: to reduce mind-wandering and improve focus, meditation is highlighted as a key method. - The social brain in a digital world: Goleman advises maximizing face-to-face interactions to foster interpersonal harmony. When working online, it’s essential to use as many sensory channels as possible (video, voice) rather than relying solely on text communication to engage the social brain effectively. - Forming new habits: good habits can solidify after 3 to 6 months of consistent practice (surprising for me as had the 21 days KPI). Engaging in both in-person and mental practice helps to further enhance skills and competencies. - Impact of early social learning programs: implementing these programs from childhood significantly improves socialization skills, leading to better performance and positive social behavior later in life.

It is well organized, is a fast read, and is very easy to understand. I am not an expert in the field but I am very interested in learning how and why we have the emotions we do. This book explains the basics without a ton of scientific jargon. When you are done reading a chapter you understand the bottom line and can apply it to your personal life.
I am very glad I read this book and have bookmarked several pages to revisit.
On a personal note I was diagnosed with anxiety disorder that had turned into depression. I have since gone off medications and have used writing poetry as a method to change my emotions. The book mentions ways to take back a hijacked amygdala. Now I know why writing poetry has helped me. When I sit down to write poetry, taking time to pick the perfect words and the perfect flow I am in essence taking back my hijacked amygdala. This is just my experience and opinion but for me the book helped explain something I had been wondering about for some time.
A short review of brain research as it bolsters emotional intelligence insights. Might be boring for someone who is keeping up with this but just right for me. Borrowed this Kindle book (though I have a Nook) from a friend and that worked easily and well. (I read it on the Kindle app on my Ipad.) Two weeks was plenty of time to read this short book. However, I highlighted notes and now can't retrieve them from Amazon.
Goleman describes research and conclusions on emotions and psychology. Very little self-help, but what’s there is a short how-to-change-habits discussion, covered quite well in other popular books. The benefit to this book is that it is short and concise; there aren’t a lot of digressions. Otherwise, it seemed quite familiar. If you are well read on emotional intelligence, decision making, habits, and the like, this is an unnecessary summary.
Too brief to be informative enough as an introduction. And if it's only meant to give a taste of other books on the subject of EI then it should at least be free.
I wish this was better, since Goleman's Vital Lies, Simple Truths was terrific. But this seems more geared for corporate coaches than for psychologists or other researchers.
