Over the past 400 years more than 800 pubs have opened in the city of Preston. While many have been lost due to time, money or misfortune, the stories and memories live on.
from the ever-popular Black Horse to the once thriving but now lost Lamb Hotel, Preston Pubs offers a captivating glimpse into the history of some of Preston's most famous pubs. Drawing upon an eclectic collection of photographs, Stephen Halliwell takes the reader on a journey through the city's inns and taverns, stopping off for a pint, chat and a bit of history along the way. Mysterious murders, rowdy regulars and even a vengeful horse are just some of the stories, legends and tall tales explored in this insightful and entertaining look at Preston's much-loved watering holes.
Well researched and beautifully illustrated, Preston Pubs provides something for everyone, whether they lived in Preston all their lives, or whether they are just visting this vibrant town.
I bought this as a present but couldn't resist flicking through prior to gifting (bit naughty). Well, anyone of a certain age will know that the pub trade in Preston has been decimated over the last 20 years or so. At one point there were over 800 pubs in Preston!
In the 1990's I used to enjoy a pint more than now and would often go on pub crawls and sessions - I wouldn't know where to start now as so many have gone. This book charts the history of pubs in the centre of Preston from before World War I.
In terms of 'dead' pubs there are lots of omissions - that leads me to think that there was a growth in the pub trade after the war or that the author didn't have as much information on the history of others.
The book is well presented with lots of photographs, can be read in one session and has a lot of historical information.
One day would like to do a walking tour of where pubs in Preston used to be but would need to take your own beer...
