Reborn #2

Relapse

Rate this book
Jasper might be gone for good, but Siobhan can’t escape the memory of him.

Or, rather, Psyche’s memories of him—memories of a kinder, gentler man, not the one who lied and manipulated her. She should have tried harder to reach him—to save Jasper from the darkness consuming him. Guilt—maybe that’s the reason why she still sees his face everywhere she turns. That, or she’s going crazy.

And Siobhan really doesn’t have time to lose her mind. Her best friend is in love with their enemy and is addicted to an alien drug. The Alpha Rhos blame her sorority for their sister’s death and take their quest for vengeance too far. Desperate, the Gamma Lambda Phis call on the help of the most deceitful Olympian of all, making her a promise they’re not even sure they can keep.

Once again, Siobhan finds herself not knowing who she can turn to or who she can trust. She comes to realize that her greatest enemy is the darkness within herself.

After enjoying the first book in S.L. Stacy’s Reborn series, I was eager to dive into the second and see what next for the characters and the story. There were a lot of interesting details that I wanted to see expanded, eager to how certain elements would develop.

I’ll be honest and say that the first part of this one didn’t pull me in quite as deep as I had hoped. The events were important for the story and linked to the later events, yet they did not suck me in quite as deeply as I had hoped. Once the events at the end of part one had transpired and we were given the new perspective in part two, I found myself unable to put the book down. Things moved much quicker, and I was hooked on the way that things developed. I fell deeper for certain characters, I was hooked on new characters, and I gladly finished the rest of the book in a single sitting.

Once again, the Reborn series has left me eager to dive into the next book. I cannot wait to see how certain elements develop.

Siobhan has finally figured out who and what she is but now it feels like it's too late. She knew Jasper had a dark side she just didn't know how much until it was too late. Now with the memories of her previous life back they are all she has to remember of a good Jasper, espically when she can't tell her sisters how much she misses him when it's because of them he is gone.

Siobhan has learned so much but in this one you still see her trying to find herself and while she understands so much more she still can't seem to figure out who to trust.

We also see glimpses in this one from one of her sisters POV's as she goes through her own challenges, and has to figure things out for herself.

More myths and madness all blended in once again in a great continuation to this series.

After finishing "reborn" in just a few short hours where my hands were practically glued to my kindle, I had to purchase the sequel "relapse" straight away.

Relapse takes off from where reborn finished. Jasper had been banished to Olympus, leaving Siobhan broken hearted.

Now she's seeing him everywhere even though she knows that's not possible.

I really enjoyed this book, maybe not as intensely as I did the first, but it was still a page turner and I had it finished over the course of two days, reading it any chance I could get.

I loved that this book left me wondering who the bad guy really is and is Siobhan and her sorority really any better than Eric and his army?

I finally started to come around on jasper too. He may not have completely abandoned his loyalty to Eric, but he proved to Siobhan that he is at least worthy, and willing to compromise for her.

I feel incredibly sorry for jimmy though... Maybe *i* could make him feel better haha Siobhan doesn't deserve him anyway.

The biggest thing I want to point out is that half way through the book, it suddenly starts alternating pov between Siobhan and her sorority sister Carly. I should start by saying I HATE HATE HATE when authors do this, because it's rarely ever done successfully with no confusion as to whose head you're in. But with relapse, SL Stacy didn't even need to label the chapter and I never got confused- not once. I think she might be one of the very few authors who pulled it off.

Just as a last note- I actually would've loved to read Carly's story as another book. I almost found myself wanting to skim over siobhan's story to get back to Carly's!

To begin with, I should admit that this is not a genre in which I feel most comfortable, and I hadn’t read the previous book, so I was a little in the dark as to what to expect. Therefore I began reading ‘Relapse’ with a degree of trepidation, but soon became impressed by the level of research that must have gone into writing it. Ms Stacy knows her stuff when it comes to Ancient Greek Legends and heroes. She is also an excellent writer, and the narrative flows well throughout, exploring a wide range of intense emotions. In spite of the fantasy elements of the book, which require a dedicated suspension of disbelief, the author manages to keep the reader’s interest with a credible everyday story set largely among a sorority in an American college, taking us on a journey of romance, thrill and mystery. I thought the alternative shift of viewpoint between Siobhan and her best friend Carly worked well in the later stages of the book, and this is no easy feat to achieve. I couldn’t quite get into the paranormal aspects of the book, although that’s no reflection on the writing or the story, except to say that for me there was a bit too much of too many different elements of it to keep me gripped. That’s a personal take on it, and not an indictment of the book itself. I suspect if I were the target audience I would just love it! But in any event, this was outweighed by the good characterisation, self knowledge, sparks of insight, and convincing dialogue. An impressive read.

I believe that this story works well as a sequel to the first book, Reborn. To give credit to the author, it has been written well enough to work as a standalone. How can that be? In my opinion, a sequel can also work by itself, but only if there is sufficient reflection on previous events. The past events must of course enrich and not overhaul the fresh plot.
This genre is not my first choice in reading material. My reasons for choosing such a tale are to review the story and the writing. I am not reading it to fantasise about, or fall in love with the characters, although Siobhan and one or two of her friends do sound rather nice.
Like the first book, this story contains love, honour, friendship, loyalty, desire and deceit. It also presents the ideas of wings, demigods, parallel world portals, shape-shifting and illusion. If the world of the paranormal appeals to you, then this is for you.
What impressed me most was the conflict, and there was plenty of it; and in various forms. There is: inner turmoil, confrontation, interpersonal rivalry and of course the curse of historic relationships. Characterisation is handled well and so too is the dialogue and the signposting of events; past and present.

Another amazing novel from my faveroite author S.L. Stacy. This is a novel that is meant to be savored by the reader. I love how delicious this book is with a well written story line that keeps the reader hooked from the begging to the end. This book even though it is a contiunation of "Reborn" works as a great stand alone novel also. This a five star novel that is well worth a read and I highly recomend it you won't be sorry.

First off, I want to give a big thank you to Ms. Stacy for putting the pronunciation of Siobhan, the main character, right at the front of the book. Seriously; I didn’t know how to pronounce it throughout the first book and was making up ways to say her name in my head. I really did appreciate that it was added to the front of the book to refresh my memory for Relapse. :)

Alright, so the story continues from where it left on from book one, then all of a sudden, halfway into the book, BAM, another point of view. Siobhan’s friend and housemate, Carly. At first I thought, noooooooo, it’s already so good. Why the sudden change? Then I read, and oh Mylanta. Honestly, I like Carly’s point of view better. Forget about Siobhan. Just kidding. Kind of.

The writing style that Stacy had with Carly’s point of view reminded me of Karen Marie Moning. This is a HUGE compliment.

If you’re looking for a fresh new series like nothing you’ve ever read before, try this one. I can’t wait to see what comes next.

My Rating: 4 1/2 stars

Favorite Quote from Book:

"Take us to the in-between,

Where earth meets sky, and wake meets dream.

And time rushes by, unseen.

Take us to the infinite night,

Where up is down, and left is right,

And dark vanquishes light…"
