Surviving Shane: Volume One

Rate this book
Shane is a dangerous man. He gets what he wants, and he wants Mia. As the daughter of a Russian mafia underboss, she's had enough experience with the criminal element to know she wants no part of it. Too bad for Mia that Shane refuses to take no for an answer.

(This is the first installment of a dark erotic romance serial and ends with a cliffhanger. This serial includes explicit sexual content and violence that may disturb readers who are sensitive to such topics. )

Surelly the author has much potential, because her writing skills are great and also the book was nicely edited, even the plot is ok, -maybe a little overdone, but still- the big problem though is Shane.

I wasn't a big fan of Mia either, she seemed awfully all over the place, but her feisty personality at some points was really a trait she should have kept in every scene, not just barking a few quotes here and there, making a huge contradiction with many of her actions. She ended up seem pathetic.

Anyway Shane was so much worse. The auhor artfully decided to not mention the word "rape" in order to avoid any linkage with her male hero, but what happened it's absolutely clear. He savagely rapes Mia with no built up at all, just a psychotic guy who takes what he wants disregarding anything and anyone around him.
And let's not go in the unnecessary violence he uses all the time.

The moment he punched her in the cellar i was sure, i would DNF the book. But anyway, i finished it and even though it's filled with clichés i liked the overall premise, But hated the characters.

THOUGHTS ABOUT THE BOOK

- The plot is intriguing.
- I don't like criticising the context that much but i really hated him and all his actions towards Mia.
- He has no redeeming qualities, at least not in this book.
- Her father is a true scum.
- Her brother is very dangerous.
- What's with that Selena?
- I liked Shane's POV. I think it would have been much better if his part was bigger and his reasoning known form the start. Maybe a double POV, is a good idea.

I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review. Mia is a Russian mob princess, doing her best to make it without any contact or help from her powerful family. Unknowingly, she attracts the attention of another player in the criminal world. Shane is an Irish mob boss, ruthless enough to use any means necessary to gain whatever he wants. Unfortunately for Mia, he wants her.

This is very edgy, and triggering for any of you afraid of the erotic dark. Shane is a great mix of psychopathic, and charming. It is a hard combination to pull off, but the writer does it somehow. Mia is defiant without being overly stupid; which is always a romance/erotica plus. There is quite a lot of background information to explain her reactions, considering the page count. This novella was scary, sexy, and rough. The domination, though titillating, felt more like criminal necessity, than training, or play. Though this was a short read, it felt surprisingly complete. This is a serial, and it does end with a cliff hanger, but not without fulfilling an important story arc. Kind of like a weekly television series, with an ongoing plot line that stretches the season, but each episode has a stand alone conclusion.

If you are a fan of Captive in the Dark (The Dark Duet, #1) by C.J. Roberts , could be right up your alley. I just wish it were a little longer. Definitely can't wait for the next installment.

This is not a sweet read. This is a dark read that some readers may find disturbing. I honestly had no idea when I started reading what all the story entailed.
Mia is a daughter of a Russian mafia under boss. She wants nothing to do with her estranged father or the mob. Mia lives a very simple life making ends meet working as a waitress. Shane who is powerful member of the mafia has become obsessed with Mia. Shane wanted Mia for himself so he “obtained” her in exchange for a debt.
This is the first book in the series. Mia is a very likable character. She is strong and handles herself well especially in the awful situation she is forced in. I am not sure what to think of Shane and I like that in this story. Shane became with Mia the first time he saw her.
The writing was okay, but the story and the characters are what grabbed me. I think it was mostly to do that some certain situations took me by surprise. Can some things be forgiven? I know a lot cannot be taken back.
I was not sure if I was going to read this ARC. I was sent an email with the MOBI file attached. I have never heard of this author and to be honest was leery to start it, but since I made no commitment to read and review, I had nothing to lose. I felt no pressure to read it so if I did not like it, I could just stop reading it. Well, I was surprised, but how much I liked it.
The second book in the series comes out in December 2014.

****Given an ARC in exchange for an honest review**

Surviving Shane is a dark, mafia read with some violence and non-consent so just be warned that this book might not be for everyone. WHen I was asked if I would like to review, I was like, why not because I love dark romances and I'm always willing to give a new author a try. I had never heard of Raurie Saxon so I went in with an open mind but not knowing what to be prepared for. I was in no way disappointed either! I read on her profile that she is new to dark, erotic romance and all I can say is seriously? Because if book 2 is as good as this one, I'm definitely looking forward to more of this authors work.

Raurie doesn't play around and grabs you right at the beginning with this story and doesn't let go.There were no slow moments for me with this one and I read it in no time. You meet Mia, who is from the Russian Mafia but wants no part of it and she is kidnapped and taken to Shane who is from another branch of Mafia and after a debt. Shane is not a nice man but honestly his character couldn't have been done better. Some readers aren't going to like him but I'm always a sucker for his type. Can he redeem himself after what he's done or will he want too?? And after a certain turning point in the story it leaves us with not knowing these answers and left wondering the outcome of certain decisions on Mia's part. Once I came to the end, all I could think about is why is it ending?!! I'm still thinking about this book a day later and trying to guess of what the outcome will be with these characters. I'm sooo ready for book 2. Overall it's a great read and I would for sure recommend this to dark erotic lovers.

This book is dark. There is really no other word to describe it. I found myself to be left disgusted with it. I mean you are kidnapped, raped and yet you feel attracted to said man? A man who not only rapped you but stole your virginity as well? I found myself not liking any of the characters. First off there’s Mia. When we first meet her she’s extremely likeable. She is a strong willed woman, working to make something of herself outside of her family. Who by the are mobsters. She is “kidnapped” by men she this works for her father so she goes with them without much of a fight only to find out they don’t work for her father but for another mob family and it appears her father paid off a debit, with her. She learns she “belongs” to Shane. A very handsome but dark man. A man that oozes power. She soon learns that fighting doesn’t do her much good, but she does at first. Shane rapes her the first night on the floor of her shower, yes you read that right and then straps her to the bed and continues having his way with her, with oral sex. Mia fights her body’s reactions to this and soon Shane leaves, but Mia learns that she can’t always fight her body or her attractions and soons starts a game of fighting at first then enjoying and then feeling guilty that she enjoyed the sex. Ugh. I found myself asking why? How?

Many readers will say you’ve never been in those shoes before and your right I haven’t been sold to a man, but I would never think I could start to like a man who not only rapped me once but over and over, and hit me time and time again all for his pleasure. To me that isn’t a normal attraction. The guilt afterwards I understand you cant help your body’s reaction to things. So being turned on by something a man is doing to you isn’t really all your fault, that’s your body.

Shane is obsessed with Mia to the point of doing anything to make sure her father owes him in some way. He even declares to go to war over her when her stepbrother comes for her. Mia begs Shane not to let him (stepbrother) take her. They have some weird past but it was never really told. The second one I believe will hold all those answers.

This book is not for readers who want love and romance. It is DARK. It will leave you hurting for a girl and pissed at a man, but at the same time wishing he would do something to make you like him. I want to understand him and see why he ticks the way he does. I am looking forward to book 2 just for the knowledge of what happens.

**I received an Advanced Reading Copy from the author in exchange for an honest review.**

Warning: This book is dark erotica and contains scenes of non-consent so if that isn't you thing, don't read this. If you like darker, non-con stories then jump right in.

First impressions: I loved this book, it pushed all of my dark romance buttons! This was everything I wanted in a short dark erotic romance. I'd like to learn more about Shane and what makes him so twisted but as this is a serial I'm sure more will be revealed.

What I liked:

First of all I love forced seduction/ captive stories and I really enjoyed the setting of this one. The whole 'criminal under lord kidnapping an innocent woman' isn't exactly original but it works, and it's actually my favourite kind of dark romance book. I actively look for books with this premise so the plot is a winner for me.

Shane: He was generally an entitled asshole with little remorse and that's exactly what I wanted. I don't want a hearts and flowers kinda guy in my dark romance. I'm looking for someone who will take what he wants and yet be able to convince his captive it's what she wants too. Shane definitely delivers on that front as he shows just a little bit of tenderness, not enough to stop him being all dark and twisty but enough that you think he could actually care for Mia. I'm read some books like this where the anti hero comes off creepy and slimy. That's not the case here, Shane is HOT and something about him appeals to my twisted desires.

What I didn't like as much :

Mia has the self preservation instincts of a pea. I don't expect her to submit willingly without a fight but it would have have been smarter to at least appear to be agreeable while plotting her escape. He blatant defiance is gonna get her killed before she can get Shane on her side.

Also her thoughts and actions were kind of disjointed. She would physically fight while internally enjoy it. This happened too quickly for me. I prefer a more gradual change so I would have liked it if she only came to enjoy his attentions towards the end or at least once she'd seen more of his gentler side. This is just personal preference though as the book is still extremely enjoyable.

I'll definitely be reading the next instalment when it's released so thanks again to the author for sending this to me.

Surviving Shane:

Raurie Saxon

This story was given to me in exchange for an honest review. I saw the previews and thought, sounds interesting, I was hoping that the author could deliver and give me something that I could sink my teeth into. It is a first in the series book and as such its job was to introduce the characters and story line. I think that this story went way beyond what my expectations were. It was almost a complete story in itself.

Mia is the daughter of a well known mafia man whom she purposely keeps her distance from as she does not want to be apart of that world. And then fellow mafia kingpin Shane O’Mara sees her one night and work and is instantly infatuated with her and decides that he needs to have her. His solution is to kidnap her and make her his.

“I have to own you completely to know that you’re mine.”

Now Mia does not bend easily to his will and there are some scenes that are definitely non consensual and contains some scenes with violence. There is rough sex and Mia finds that something inside her is brought to life with his rough treatment; she is made to face her inner most secret darkest desires. She hates him, she hates where she is, and now she hates herself even more.

When you accept the way the storyline is going, and think that you have things figured out then…. Watch out, there will be an ending that you just do not see coming, I was completely shocked and left wanting more, more, more.

This was a new author for me. I am really impressed. I would recommend her story to all dark romance lovers. It does push a few buttons but does not cross the line. I loved it. I can’t wait until the next segment.

This is the first instalment of this dark erotic series. It's a real short story but it's totally action packed.

Shane always gets what he wants. For a while now he has wanted Mia and he has to go to drastic measures to have her. Can Mia survive Shane??

Although it's a short dark read I thoroughly loved it. Ending in a cliffhanger I'm so looking forward to reading the next instalment. Hopefully we won't have to wait too long.

DNF... sort of. I read the original volume one before the author change the content to appease other readers. I prefer the original. That being said, this is a series and not the whole story. As such, for an incomplete book, I’m giving a partial incomplete rating of 2 stars.

5 dark and hot Irish mafia boss stars

First book I've read of this author and being honest I didn't know what to expect. The blurb didn't show so much of the story, just something to caught my interest and decided to give it a try.

Mia works at a restaurant, she's 21 and avoiding all contact with his father, who happens to be a Russian mob boss or something, she's completely unnaware of the risk she's in because of his father, until she meets Shane O'mara, an apparently important member of the Irish mafia, and of course, he was hot....

"Swallowing thickly, Mia examined the man who had sent for her. He was a handsome devil, with thick black hair, a light tan, and green eyes the shade of sea foam. Those eyes were regarding her intently, and she abruptly recognized him. He was an occasional visitor to Lovelle’s, always with a beautiful woman in tow. Usually tall, blonde, and leggy. Everything petite Mia wasn’t. She couldn’t fathom why he had sent for her. "

At this point in the book I was guessing for the reason Mia was aproached by Shane, and as he lay it out to her I understood it wasn't going to be a hearts and flowers story...

“My father owes you, so why am I here?” “You’re the price he’s paid, my sweet.” He made no attempt to disguise the blaze of desire in his gaze. “And I’m going to get full value."

Their first intimate encounter wasn't something I was expecting and I was a little afraid to keep reading, 'cause I wasn't a big fan of Shane at the moment, but as the story evolves I saw him a little bit different, he's determined to possess Mia completely...

"The truth is I’m completely fucking obsessed with you. From the moment I laid eyes on you, I wanted nothing more than to bury my cock inside your cunt and fuck you for hours."

Mia is having an internal battle cause she's attracted to him, the way he treats her, but her mind tells her she needs to fight, but he keeps pusing her...

“Make no mistake, Mia. I will go to war if I have to. I will destroy your family and burn down the city to have you."

The book is written in third person and there's a little bit of Shane's POV, I like that a lot in a book, cause you get to understand the characters better. I liked the writing style, it's actually very easy to read and get lost in the story. Also a fast read, but ends with a cliffhanger.

Recommended for those who likes to read dark romance with a hot alpha male with a possessive and dangerous side.

I was given this book for free by the author for an honest review.

I did enjoy this story and will definitely read the next, but my biggest issue was that I love reading dark reads, even non conceptual sex, but this was too much like rape. I didn't enjoy the shower scene and felt uncomfortable about reading that. I know the character found it hard entering the shower after the act, and to be honest, I felt for her.

If I could give the book 3.5 I would as it's more than 3 but not quite 4 stars for me.

The book is about a mafia daughter who is taken by a rival in payment for a dept. It transpires he's manipulated this situation, as he's actually attracted to her, and felt she would never give him the time of day. But to rape her and steal her vaginity, that was just too much for me.
I felt the book improved thoughtout the second half, where she's staring to develop feelings for her captor, but fighting these at the same time.

I didn't like the reference to Christian Grey, as I felt that was a bit off and me personally, I don't like the use if the work crack for the backside..that's my personal view. But apart from that I did enjoy the storyline, and I do love the fact it finishes, leaving you wanting to know more. Why won't she go with her brother, and will she now stop fighting her captor and give him what he wants.
I do feel this will develop into a lovely love story, so am looking forward to the next!!!

I want to start by sayig that I really like the way Raurie writes. She is articulate, very thoughtful of her storyline and proofreads before putting her book out there to the public.

I was asked to read this book as an ARC for an honest review. Let me start by saying that I was really excited to read this book

Unfortunately, I don't condone rape and physical abuse towards women, let alone anyone.

This book started off pretty good, but the minute Mia was violated in the shower by Shane, losing her virginity so viciously and callously made me want to not finish this book. But, because I promised my honest review, I had to force myself to read on...

The physical abuse that is also forced on to Mia from Shane, then her questioning her hatred for morbid attraction, again... made me want to stop reading.

I wish the author had written Shane's character with more charisma and alpha worthy. I wish she had written Shane's character as a male who treasures and worships Mia because of his obsession and desire to keep her forever.

I was provided a copy of this book to read for an honest review.

****This book contains scenes of sexual violence which may not be for everyone.****

A normal life is all that Mia wanted. Doing her best to have one, she's cut off all contact with her father, Vadim, who happens to be high up in the Russian Mafia. As much as she dislikes her father, she hates her stepbrother, Aldo.

Enter Shane O'Malley. Shane works for a competitive family and as a repayment for a favor he did Mia's father, he gets Mia. Mia is not impressed with Shane does her best to free herself from his control. Until her stepbrother shows up, leading the rescue party.

Shane is puzzled to learn that Mia would willingly choose him over Aldo, but will take Mia anyway he can have her.

I can't wait until the next book in this series. This one has left me wanting more.

Received an ARC for a honest review. Dark erotica romance containing some violence and non-consent. I would go as far to say it definitely is not for everyone and you'll need an open mind in order to read it. I actually went back and had to read it again before I wrote my review. Storyline is well written, ends with a cliffhanger but does hold your attention from beginning to end. Shane, a mob boss is ruthless, dangerous, wants Mia. Mia is the daughter of a Russian mafia underboss, wants nothing to do with her family and ends up being taken by Shane as a payment for debt owed. Overall it is a pretty good read but haven't decided if I am going to read more.

Ahhh.....Shane

So he gets off to a rocky start since no one wants the hero to rape his love interest. BUT.....I LOVE SHANE!!!!! I believe he will redeem himself and as the story unfolds he will be the white knight.
