Jamison Kessler and Lee Grayson are back in book two of the "Under" Series. Set one year after Under the Midnight Cloak, their adversary is very human. Someone has a fixation on Lee that manifests itself in a series of grisly murders rapidly approaching serial status and child abductions. These crimes are merely warnings, but what happens if Lee fails to interpret their meaning?
Jamison, Lee and the Panthera rush to save the lives of the innocent while they struggle to identify the instrument of so much suffering. Strains in relationships cloud their ability to see the whole picture. At the same time, U. S. Park Police Detective Patricia Hex shows up to help out but may soon become a threat to the Panthera community. Jamison's concentration splits between Lee, a mysterious killer and trying to keep Hex out of the Council's crosshairs. Her lack of focus may be all the stalker needs to get to Lee.
Born in California but raised in Texas, Susan joined the United States Marine Corps straight out of High School. After ten years and a lot of travel, she left the military and became a San Diego Deputy Sheriff. Retired from an on the job injury, Susan returned to Texas and began writing Star Trek Voyager fan fiction in 2002, but her imagination insisted on creating scenarios outside that genre. Today she still resides in North Texas with her two dogs and the five stray cats that adopted her. Her previous works, all seventy-two stories, can be found on her website. Book wasn't as well developed as I would have liked - there were flashes of thoughts and ideas that weren't really explored (looking mainly at the detective and Sheriff (the romantic vibe part; and the part wherein the detective kept seeming to . . . know more than she should - a thread that poofed without resolution)).
This second one kinda stray off from the romance aspect of the story. Yes, there are romance, but they don't play a huge part in the story compared to the first one. Honestly, I'm more interest in the relationship between Sam and Hex than the main couple themselves. Unfortunately, unless there is gonna be a book 3, I don't think the relationship between Sam and Hex will go anywhere. Though, I do enjoyed every interaction that Jamison and Lee had in this story. I just wish there is more. There are plenty of hint regarding who is the villain. Just like the first one, the villain is totally unreasonable and delusional. I feel like this is quite a common theme for the typical villain. I am totally fine with it, but that will make the series feels "nothing new", because in both books, the villains got very similar characteristics to one another.
What an enjoyable re-visitation with Jamison and Lee. A little dive into Panthera politics with Jami's mother and a rival on the Council, but the big story is a mystery: serial killer killing blond women in Adirondack National Park, and Lee is apparent the killer's next target. There's kidnapping, tranq shooting, obsessive stalkeriness, dognapping. Thankfully, the kids are okay, the tranqs don't work as well on Panthera bodies, and the dog is instrumental in helping find Lee when she goes missing, and the stalker/killer gets their comeuppance.
I read this when it first came out, but I didn't remember it. It was still entertaining. This shapeshifter mystery held up. The romance between the sheriff and detective didn't really work. Maybe it was supposed to add tension but it didn't, and the "catching a killer" plot really didn't need it. I would rather have had more about the Panthera and Jamison and Lee.
I really like this series. It will definitely go into my "read again" pile. Lots of twists and turns, great adventures and revelations. Kept me reading into the night. An exciting read.
