I'm a wife, mother, and bona fide Southern belle. Published author, expert corn bread maker, and Squirrel Princess.
I live in Tulsa, though I was born in Mississippi. I moved to the Sooner State when I was seventeen and met my soul mate and best friend not long after. I've retained a little of my Mississippi accent though most people think I'm from Texas. (?) Rob and I have been married for over twenty years and have a son--a mom proclaimed prodigy, of course!
I love homemade tacos, nail polish, and romance novels--not necessarily in that order. I'm a big fan of country music, a staunch proponent of saving the Oxford comma, and I'm shamefully obsessed with all things Harry Potter.
I believe that God is love. I guess that's why I adore romances.
I have always been intrigued with the Amish culture, their gentle ways and slower-paced lifestyle. (And I love, love, love the fact that they stay married for their lifetime.) But until recently I never thought to blend this interest with my penchant for romance. Okay, okay, I'm a bit old-fashioned and even enjoy the gender roles that are present in this culture. I love to cook and take care of my family. Yes, that's me June Cleaver with a laptop.
I dislike people trying to convince me to read the Twlight series (I'll get to it or I won't, either way I'm good with it), gratuitous violence, and strawberry ice cream. (I know I'm alone on this last one, and again, I'm good with it.)
Favorite movies--(besides HP) French Kiss, Maid of Honor, A Lot Like Love, Just Married, and Sweet Home Alabama. Oh, and Miss Congeniality, Sabrina (both versions) and a 1940's movie called Dear Ruth. If you haven't seen it, you should! A-dorable. Anything with Doris Day and most all of Marilyn's and Audrey's.

When Harlan suddenly proposes, Maddie is torn by guilt and confusion. Is this true love or just the herbs talking?
THE GINGERBREAD BRIDE is such an adorable story! I have never read any of Ms. Lillard’s books – not even her Amish which is what she’s most known for – so when I was offered a chance to review her Christmas novella I jumped at it—for several reasons.
I absolutely love Christmas stories and if they are laced with fun, snow, cookies, and mistletoe all the better. Ms. Lillard includes all of the above in this fast paced novella.
If you are looking for a good Christmas story to read, you’ll want to read Ms. Lillard’s THE GINGERBREAD BRIDE. Highly recommended. I’m going to go look at a few now written by some of my favorite historical authors. Ebook only.

The Gingerbread Bride by Amy Lillard – The 12 Brides of Christmas (Heartland Christmas Brides - 4 Novellas)

This was the third novella in this book. I got a big kick out of Maddie Joy who has purchased a “love potion” in order to cause Harlan Calhoun to fall in love with her on Christmas eve in 1870 in the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas. She has baked it into some amazing gingerbread cookies, but then regrets her decision to do so and not trust God. But, it is too late! She spends most of the story, along with her sister trying to avoid the topic of love and marriage, while poor Harlan spends most of it trying to get up the courage to propose. Very funny, sweet story.
I give it 5 out of 5 stars and would recommend it as a cozy Christmas read.
Included at the end of the book: Recipe for “Common Gingerbread Cookie” from 1827. It calls for a “teacup” of ginger! And a small teaspoon of pearl ash (aka cream of tartar). Fun to read old recipes like that!
I purchased Heartland Christmas Brides BOOK #1 with 4 authors/stories included at WalMart for $9.97. I am reviewing each story separately as I read them. There are also 2 other books: Book #2 White Christmas Brides Book #3 Christmas Wedding Bell Brides or you can download any of the individual stories alone.
This novella takes place in the Ozark Mountains, Arkansas in the year 1870, on Christmas Eve.
Maddie Sinclair is in love with Harlan Calhoun. She will go to great lengths to get Harlan to love her back. Maddie comes up with an excellent idea in which to make that happen. After she puts her plan in place she immediately regrets the decision she made. Is this decision reversible?
Harlan Calhoun secretly adores Maddie Sinclair. He hopes to ask her to marry him soon. So, he sets out to put his plan in place. He doesn’t know about Maddie’s plan but he does know she is acting a little strange around him. She seems a little nervous. What is up with Maddie?
This was a delightful story. I really enjoyed it.
Author Amy Lillard has a gift for storytelling. I have read all of her Amish fiction novels. I am looking forward to reading more of her books in the future.
Maddie Sinclair loves Harlan Calhoun and will do anything to gain his attention and love. She gets crazy one day and visits an eccentric woman who lives in the Ozark Mountains. The woman sells her a “love potion”. Maddie bakes the herbs into a batch of cookies that Harlan eats. When Harlan proposes, Maddie is unsure if it was the herbs or his heart talking? Did her plan backfire? Amy Lillard produced an adorable, witty, and well-written story. I fell in love with the characters from the start and could not wait to see what happened next. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves a great romance…what better way to get into the holiday spirit!
If you are looking for a fun, sweet Christmas story that will have you giggling, look no further. The Gingerbread Bride is such a cute story!
Harlan is a heartwarming hero and Maddie is a flustered young lady who regrets an impulsive decision. She is now trying her hardest to make things right, but her doing so makes for a truly fun ride.
The Gingerbread Bride is book six in The 12 Brides of Christmas novella series. I enjoyed this light-hearted story.
Maddie was in love with Harlan and wanted to be sure he felt the same way. In this historical fiction, which takes place in 1870 in the Ozarks in Alabama, an old woman convinces Maddie she has a love potion that will do the trick.
Maddie begins to feel guilty about what she has done to cause Harlan to have strong feelings about her and is convinced those feelings stem from her love potion.
This story is probably very true to the period and is a sweet story that will keep your attention. Perhaps is was a bit too hard to convince Maddie of Harlan’s feelings than it could have been, but I enjoyed the story and Amy Lillard’s books have always been enjoyable to me.
I received an ebook copy of The Gingerbread Bride for my honest review, which I have given.
This book is part of a 12 part series in the called The Heartland Brides.
A sweet short story on how one mistake can blind us to the truth right in front of us. Taking things into your own hands instead of trusting God only causes trouble. But some of us learn that the hard way. The Gingerbread Bride is book number six of the 12 Brides of Christmas Series. Maddie Sinclair loves Harlan Calhoun and can’t wait for him to return her love. Instead of being patient Maddie decides to try and take matters into her own hands by baking a herbal concoction into a batch of Gingerbread cookies. When Harlan proposes, Maddie is scared that she ruined everything. Can Maddie forgive herself for what she’s done? Does Harlan really love her or was it just the love potion? I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a quick satisfying read. I received a copy of this book from Barbour Publishing in return for my honest option. All opinions expressed are my own.
Beware of the gingerbread cookies!! This whole cute, humorous and charming tale of love and misunderstanding gave me that “feel good” Christmas spirit. I was giggling with the banter and antics of the sisters, the poor boy who just wanted to fulfill his Christmas Eve wish and the father who had no clue what was going on. Maddie loves Harlan but doesn’t think he feels the same way for her – so she goes to desperate measures! Poor Harlan is just trying to declare his love – will they be able to correct the misunderstanding? Will everyone forgive her? This was well written and flowed throughout the story. It is full of Christmas spirit and family love. I recommend! I received this book for an honest review.
Maddie thinks Harlan is saying he loves her because of what she put in the cookies, she thought it was some kind of love potion. Loved this short Christmas story , funny and sweet story. I have purchased all the series and will be reading some after Christmas, even though this book is a Christmas book it can always be read at any time. I enjoyed the humor in this book, they kept trying to keep Harlan from talking to her Dad about proposing since thought it was only because of the potion.
I love Amy's books, this novella was really sweet. A sweet love story. Maddie decides she loves a guy and goes out of her way to seek help to have him to fall in love with her. A lesson of having faith and trust in God for what should be ends her into all kinds of troubles. Wonder if there will be my gingerbread cookies in the future? Great novella and loved the characters. I love Christmas stories.
Loved this Christmas romance, Harlan and Maddie were fantastic. This story made me laugh out loud and then sigh. Absolutely heartwarming. This is a must read, Amy Lillard has done it again.
This was a fun read. It was fun to see what two girls do when they think they have given a guy a love potion. Great novella. I received this ebook from Barbour publishing for a fair and honest opinion.
A delightful Christmas Novella! I thoroughly loved this short story. There was just enough humor as Maddie tries to put a love potion in cookies to make Harlan fall in love with her. I have loved all the stories in this collection so far.
The Gingerbread Bride. The 12 Brides of Christmas Series By: Amy Lillard
The Gingerbread Bride is the sixth book in The 12 Brides of Christmas Series. This story begins on Christmas eve, 1870 in the tiny town of Calico Falls in the foothills of the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas. Madeline Joy Sinclair has had her eye on Harlan Calhoun for awhile now as the man she loves and wants to marry. Maddie feels she is not the prettiest of the two sisters in the household. Maddie thinks she needs a little help in getting Harlan to fall in love with her as her prayers are not being answered quite fast enough for her. Maddie feels maybe the Old Lady Farley can help her with making it happen faster. She barters for some herbs that are suppose to be a "Love Potion" to help Harlan fall in love with her on Christmas Eve. Harlan is invited to supper and Maddie serves him a generous portion of Gingerbread laced cookies made with Miss Farley's "Love Potion". When Maddies older sister Grace finds her out, she makes Maddie feel guilty about not trusting the Lord to answer her prayers and the evening is now laced with antics to keep Harlan from asking Pastor Sinclair, Maddies father, for Maddies hand in marriage. Harlan had been planning on proposing on Christmas Eve all along but Maddie now won't believe that the "Love Potion" hasn't tricked him into proposing. This was so fun watching how many ways Maddie and her sister tried to stop Harlan from proposing while under the influence of the potion. I really enjoyed this sweet romantic Christmas story and I think you will too.
I was gifted The Gingerbread Bride from Barbour Publishing for my honest opinion which I have given.
This reminded me so much of the romantic plays I love to watch that are filled with misunderstandings between the characters until they finally resolve the misunderstanding and declare their long held love for each other. A fun and sweet story!
The Gingerbread Bride, By: Amy Lillard The 12 Brides of Christmas (Book 6) What a fun and delightful story. Very quick read. Will leave you smiling over the thing that Maddie think’s she has done.
The story was very well written and flowed beautifully. Add a small delight to your Christmas reading and get your copy today.
Rating: 5 Stars!! Review: This was my first time reading a Historical Christmas Novel by Amy so I wasnt sure what to expect but I have to say I really enjoyed this one especially when the Spell was put on Harlon by Maddie to get him to fall in love with her by Christmas.
The Characters were fun and enjoyable to read about.
Maddie wasnt my favorite at first because she seemed uptight and desperate but was glad when she finally mellowed out toward the end.
Harlan was my favorite by far because of how persistent he was to get a date with Maddie.
The Setting was beautifully described which made me feel like I was actually in 1870 Arkansas while reading especially when the scenery of the Ozark Mountains was described.
Overall a funny yet enjoyable Historical Fiction Novel.
Maddie Sinclair feels that Harlan Calhoun needs an extra push to fall all the way in love with her. So she purchases a "love potion" of herbs from her eccentric neighbor and bakes him some very special gingerbread cookies. At the last minute, she sees the error of her ways but it's too late. Harlan has already gobbled up all the cookies! To make matters worse, he proposes nearly on the spot. Is it his heart talking or just the herbs?
The Gingerbread Bride by Amy Lillard wins my award for the most hilarious novella in this collection. Lots of madcap mayhem as Maddie and her sister Grace try to straighten out this whole love potion debacle. If you are a fan of Jen Turano's novels, you will really enjoy this story!
The Gingerbread Bride ( The 12 Brides of Christmas #6 ) By: Amy Lillard
The Gingerbread Bride is #6 in The 12 Brides of Christmas. Amy Lillard really out did herself this time. She weaved us a humorous novella and I laughed and laughed while I was reading it . What would you think of when you hear love potion, Yes magic. A young lady did not want to wait on Harlan to tell her he loved her and to propose to her. Yes Gingerbread cookies made for Harlan. I love the two main characters Maddie and Harlan , both was well written and easy to follow. Be sure and pick up your copy and read more about Maddie and Harlan. I was given this book by the author for my honest review.
Amy Lillard has a way to pull you in. I love this story in the collection of Christmas Brides. Love Potion and honesty. This was such a fun story. Madeline is infatuated with Harlan and just doesn't realize he returns her love and infatuation. Amy spins a wonderful story of love and all you need is Faith not a Love Potion to win someone's heart.
The Gingerbread Bride was a really fun read. Super quick (I read it during halftime) and funny. I was asked to leave the room due to the fact I was being "disruptive". Anyway, this light fun read was the perfect evening escape for me.
Maddie is in love with Harlan, but feels inferior to the charms of her sister Grace. Instead of trusting in God's timing and provision she decides to takes matters into her own hands and bakes up lots of trouble!
I really enjoyed this story. I really enjoyed how befuddled poor Harlan was through most of this while Maddie tried to cover her tracks and divert him. Thankfully, God's plans are bigger than our messes.
So pick up your copy of The Gingerbread Bride and enjoy a super fun read! Happy Reading!

This novella was not what I thought it would be. I gave it a higher rating than I probably should have but the whole book wasn't bad. I felt that the storyline was mostly unbelievable and that the problem could have been resolved much sooner than it was. I was getting very frustrated that the couple wouldn't just talk and work everything out. The reason I gave it a higher rating than the novella probably deserved, in my opinion, was that it was very amusing. I was laughing out loud as I read the novella. Also I really loved Harlan. He was very understanding and really sweet and romantic. So for the humor and Harlan I gave the novella a higher rating but anyone that reads this book should do it more for the humor aspect than for the romance or believable storyline and should be prepared for frustration that the problem isn't worked out sooner. I was definitely glad this story was a novella. As a full length novel I feel it would have seriously dragged on forever.
Title: The Gingerbread Bride Author: Amy Lillard Series: The 12 Brides of Christmas, 6 Format: ebook, bind-up Length: 46 pages Rating: 1 star
Synopsis: Maddie Sinclair loves Harlan Calhoun, but feels like she can’t get his attention, so she visits an eccentric woman in the Ozark Mountains for an herbal mixture—a love potion—that she bakes into a batch of gingerbread cookies. Favourite character: Harlan Least favourite character: Maddie
Mini-review: Well, that was stupid. I didn't enjoy this in the least. Maddie was too stubborn, buying into such idiotic lies that it made her look stupid instead of looking at the reality of the situation, but honestly Harlan isn't much help. Instead of telling Maddie he's loved her for years, he just keeps saying that he loves her, reenforcing the lies. Basically this just seemed really stupid to me. But honestly that's just my opinion. Nothing against the author.
Fan Cast: Madeleine "Maddie" Sinclair - Sarah Hyland Harlan Calhoun - Nicholas Braun

Too many lies, not stopping when others knew. Not being realistic when faced multiple times with the truth. Christians and magic do not mix. As Harlan said in the book "The game was growing tiresome". Yep. I loved Harlan.
