For the past few decades, Meriwen has created a life for herself tucked away in the forest bordering Arrowmount surrounded by her lush garden and many creatures — both mundane and magical. She chose a life tasked with managing and balancing the magic flowing through ley lines that have bundled themselves into powerful nexuses. Zanve is a town guard perfectly content with his life. He has his friends, his job - despite hating one of his coworkers - and his somewhat secret shifter powers. One night on duty, Zanve sees a bright light from near Meri’s cottage; he decides to investigate and finds Meri injured and a tiny unknown creature at her side. After Zanve locks this creature in Meri’s greenhouse, causing it to panic and to destroy nearly all of Meri’s plant stores, Meri misses an essential ritual to keep the ley lines in balance. Zanve offers help to repair her greenhouse, the two of them start unraveling the mysteries of the little creature, and they plan to fix the magic storming around the little seaside town of Arrowmount — all the while they get to know one another and realize that there could be more to the life they already know.
J. A. Collignon (AKA: Jenna, but you can call her Jenn) is a Canadian author based out of the prairies, who loves everything fantasy. You name it: fantasy books, movies, TV shows, TTRPG podcasts, and she even ran a piratey Dungeons and Dragons campaign for her friends. Most often, she can be found on her couch with a thick fantasy book in hand.
A lovely book by my very talented pal! What a sweet way to send off the series ❤️ Thank you for sharing your babies with the world, Jenn!
Meriwen likes her little life. She lives with her grumpy wyrmling pal Lock, she manages her chronic pain as best as she can, and she does the thankless job of maintaining the magical ley lines in the town of Arrowmount. When the brash and beautiful town guard, Zanve, along with a mysterious fey creature, accidentally destroys Meri's greenhouse, she will have to open up and accept help from a town that she has cared for and protected for years if she wants to make it to her next ritual.
I appreciate how Meri blooms through the story, at first she hates letting Zanve in to do repairs, but by the end she really feels like a part of the community which comes together in such a satisfying way in the ending - she can't save the day alone! This story shows a diverse range of relationships and families and identities that bolster and strengthen each other. One of my particular fave moments is Meri negotiating with the pixies living in her library to carry a message to her family.
A Favored Fey (I will try to forgive the American spelling) has the highest stakes of the series I think. As the magical storms kick into high gear, and the dramatic weather turns the townspeople into an angry mob, I was a little worried how they were going to set things right again. It didn't help that they had Damian egging them on all the way (I hate that guy)
This whole series is a great choice for anyone who loves cozy fantasy!

This book was so good that the ending made me cry. I absolutely adore this world that Collignon has built, and I hope to read some of the other books in this series. I would recommend this for fans of Rebecca Thorne.
I give this one a little extra grace on the editing because it's a self-published book and judge it more on the quality of the story and characters than on the editing. It was sweet and the characters were likeable. If you're looking for a magical town that's very queernorm, cosy low fantasy, low stakes (along the lines of Legends and Lattes vibe of low stakes), romance but not spicy (no smut), you will probably enjoy this whole series.
There are a few typos here and there and the book could use a bit of tightening up in the pacing and repetition department but that wasn't enough to ruin my enjoyment and I wouldn't hold any of that against it.
The two caveats I have are: 1. The characters make decisions sometimes that border on dumb in an attempt to create plot conflicts, which can be a bit hard to swallow at times. 2. Sometimes it loses its fantasy feel by using modern, contemporary terms, objects, etc. that make it feel like it's really just a contemporary book in disguise.
Those two things often really take me out of a book. However, it didn't ruin my enjoyment at all and I'd still recommend this if you're looking for a relatively low conflict, low fantasy, sweet novel.
Thank you to the author for an arc in exchange for my honest review!
I really enjoyed this cute cozy fantasy! It has a nice balance of fantasy world and a sweet love story (no spice). - found family - lovable companion animals - green flag MMC - chronic pain rep - queer normative society (some shade thrown to a poly triad but gay/bi characters are just a matter of course)
For readers who enjoy books like The Spellshop or Legends and Lattes. Enough stakes to keep you engaged but feels like a comfort read, you know the author isn’t gonna go offing anyone.
The romance was exceedingly sweet and I know some don’t like that, so know thyself.
Overall I had a great time and found myself thinking about this story and being excited to finally be done work and get to read it!
Thank you to the author for this ARC! This was such a good read. The themes of chronic pain were so raw and in a way I haven’t seen discussed in a book before. The romance had me giggling and kicking my feet. There was a perfect amount of story but also the perfect amount of romance sprinkled in. Anything from J.A Collingnon is definitely an insta buy now. I highly recommend this book!!
I received this as an ARC from the author and I Screeched with joy when I did. This such a lovely read and I was so glad for a queer-normative read, too. I really loved the relationship dynamics here and the story was truly one that got me out of a (mild) slump. I loved it so much, I got a physical copy for my shelf. So that's saying something :)
**Thank you to the author for an advanced copy of this book**
It is no secret that I absolutely adore the Arrowmount books. A Second Story and A Little Luck quickly took their places in my list of favourite books of all time. And A Favored Fey is definitely joining them as this book was absolutely amazing.
Meri and Zanve are such fantastic characters! Meri is so lovely, and I truly appreciate her character. While I don't have chronic pain like Meri does, I have migraines and the emotions and thoughts she has about the pain felt so familiar. She is also demisexual, which was also refreshing to read and I really related to that too. Her character ended up meaning quite a bit to me. She embodies so much strength and love for the world and creatures around her. And Zanve is such a great character! He is so strong, standing up for himself and those he loves, but he also has such a sweet side as well. He is such a lovable guy! Apparently with a great butt and thighs for our bi king! LOL Also the side characters?! Love them!! Wyn, Kaius, and Jay are amazing and I would love a little side story about them! (Although I would take any additional stories that I could get from the Arrowmount world)
I also love when there are cute creatures that add an extra something to the story! Thistle and Lock help make the story better for so many pieces. Thistle is of course integral, and such a cute little meandering fellow. And Lock? Amazing. I love his snippy moments and chasing off the one terrible character. He is such a special little creature, and I love him.
This book had a bit more adventure than the others - and is a little lengthier - but it has reason for it! There are so many amazing moments to the story, and moments that build the character relationships with each other and with Thistle.
I highly recommend this book! You don't need to read the books in order, but there are some characters mentioned from the other books, and of course Ari and Finn make a little appearance as well.
I can't wait for everyone to be able to have this beautiful book in their hands!!
