Annabelle Dawson narrates this ninth book in the Voided Man series.
After detailing how Annabelle met John Dawson and what their lives were like in 23rd Century America before John's exile, the story turns to a most improbable alien that calls itself the Entirety. In The Fields of Glass Next Door, we learn...
What the Entirety is, where it came from, and what risks it presents...
What happened to the Valkyrie-2 in the very early days of the colonization program...
About absolute limits the universe places on probabilities...
How Annabelle Dawson and others make use of the newly formed infrared hats in the in between place...
Why the green hat that freed the Qrail formed in the in between place...
And of course, what waits at the bottom of the mysterious vertical tunnel on the Potato.
All this and much more in The Fields of Glass Next Door.
I absolutely love the Voided Man Series and this may be my favorite one yet. The descriptions were vivid and the science was interesting. A sentient predatory "plant." I love it.
The entire series is the best read ever. Interesting on so many different levels and gracefully written. Entertaining and accessible while thought provoking.
The Voided Man series has really grown on me. Each book is a relatively quick read, yet the span of the entire story is among the most epic in all of sci-fi. Where else can you go from a post-apocalyptic medieval society to the literal end of the universe, travel back and forth through time, ride the event horizon of a black hole until Hawking radiation evaporates it, and journey between parallel universes? Despite all this complexity, the books remain accessible, with likable characters and plotlines that don’t frustrate you too much (though this could also be seen as one of the series’ weaknesses). The author manages to crank out a new installment every two months, which is quite an admirable feat! Waiting for the next one.
The first 5 chapters describe an earth easy to imagine from our current world. Disconcerting to see the convergence of social media, databases and connected reality combine to create a world not far removed from the present.
Of course the rest of the book is as original and enjoyable as the rest of this series. Looking forward to the next one!
Because of reasons, I read an absurdly large number of books each year. Among the many, this series is definite!y one of my favorites. It has some of the best world-building you'll find in scifi. It has great characters whom you want to root for, high stakes, virtually perfect pacing, innovative perspectives/narration, and absolutely fascinating science.
This was the weakest of the voided man series primarily because the main character is not particularly interesting. We get some minor background about advertising, campaigning, and life in the USA under president Jones. My eyes started to glaze over on the same stories told from a slightly different viewpoint. The center of the story has nothing to do with the central character except her making an obvious suggestion when along for the ride. She just comes across as bland. Considering the exciting cliffhanger in the prior book, and the fascinating life of Alan in the volume before that .. this volume was a bit of a dud.
