Few novels I’ve read have come across this misanthropic. Powys is not only disgusted and appalled by the country folk of SW England that he depicts in this novel, but the very fabric of humanity seems to offend him! His special rancor seems to be toward Church of England priests! Powys is great at depicting man’s greed, lust and pettiness, but he’s not so great at keeping track of his story or characters. I found everyone so alike that I had to go back and check several times to see whom he was talking about. Characters would disappear for large parts of the book only to reappear without any refreshers. It was an interesting read, this novel seems related to Sinclair Lewis’ brand of skewering of American middle class, but it is not an experience I’d like to repeat anytime soon.
