A breathtakingly self-opinionated writer. I repeatedly paused, hoping against hope that Mr Vesey-Fitzgerald just might become a little more humble, or factually rigorous. But no!
Despite my strong inclination to close this book, reading unfinished, I remained caught in some unholy web of awful fascination, right to the last page. OK; I know that Mr Vesey-Fitzgerald, writing in 1953, didn’t have the benefit of archaeological knowledge gained between the 1960s and the 1980s, but why could he not have read and referred to the sources of his information, before stating; “However, in my opinion, …… because ……” i.e. constructing a rational argument.
Much of what Mr Vesey-Fitzgerald records is known today to be factually incorrect; so if the reader is seriously interested in the history of Winchester, he must consult other books. However, the numerous photographs are well worth looking at.
