Gary Karkofsky AKA The Supervillain without MercyTM has managed to fall into a comfortable routine as the (acting) Supreme Archmage of Earth. More hero than villain these days, he’s recruited to a shadowy black ops team with a shocking assassinate The Sun King, ruler of Tomorrow Island. Gary immediately twigs to the fact he’s the fall guy even as he has his own score to settle with Helios. Joining him will be a number of fan favorite characters as well as several new additions to the surreal world of the Supervillainy Saga.
The Return of Supervillainy is the tenth volume of the Supervillainy Saga, following the world’s worst (best?) supervillain. It has two bonus stories in “Sidekick Girl versus Merciless” and “The Freelancer’s Cunning Plan.” It also contains “The Guide to the Supervillainy Saga” which will detail the entire history of the setting for long-term and new fans.
C.T Phipps is a lifelong student of horror, science fiction, and fantasy. An avid tabletop gamer, he discovered this passion led him to write and turned him into a lifelong geek. He is a regular reviewer on Booknest.EU and for Grimdark Magazine.
He's written the Agent G series, Cthulhu Armageddon, the Red Room Trilogy, I Was A Teenaged Weredeer, Lucifer's Star, Psycho Killers in Love, Straight Outta Fangton, The Supervillainy Saga, and Wraith Knight.
The Return of Supervillainy by C.T. Phipps I always love a book in this multiverse. The characters are all crazy and it's sure to be a riot, often literally. Phipps is clever with puns, and often uses his wit to slide in references to movies, books, or songs. I like that Gary is back. Confused villain. Not sure if he is a good guy or a bad guy anymore. A lot of the whole gang is involved here. I am also glad that the author gave a brief rundown of what happened so far. My memory isn't the best anymore but it's been 10 books. Plus I have read hundreds of others too. Great book! Start at book one and join the ride! Fun and crazy ride!
THE RETURN OF SUPERVILLAINY is, in fact, one of those series that got revived after they were cancelled. Not because of money, though that helps, but because I had more stories to tell with Merciless: The Supervillain without MercyTM. I noted I'd never really dealt with X-men like plots and the idea of Gary up against a Magneto-figure was an intriguing one. Gary is, after all, sort of a freedom fighter/terrorist himself. I also wanted to experience some fun with characters who hadn't gotten much attention.
Fans of my previous books will love this one, I think, and I strongly recommend they check it out.
Ten entries in, by now pretty much any other series I've read would have cooled for me. Not so Supervillainy. I think I finally have a handle on why. To some extent, there's the brain candy effect--at the top level of these books it's very easily digestible, dopamine hit inducing entertainment. But that kind of thing eventually wears thin. The secret here is that the brain candy element of these books is the sauce, it's not what's underneath. Before I get lost in a mixed metaphor I'll try to put it another way: the cool surface layer invites me in, the surprising depth keeps me there. I'm sure you could just read these as a kind of popcorn book, and enjoy them, but there's so much cleverness at work that'd be a shame. From subtle (but not preachy) social commentary, to astute observations about human relationships, and delving into deeper questions of our nature and identity and place in existence. You don't have to look past the snark and the pop-cultural references (some modern, some deliciously and knowingly of earlier decades). But if you do you'll be rewarded.
I'll leave the summary of plot and such like to other reviews or the blurb itself, and skip to saying that I enjoyed it, often couldn't guess what was going to happen next (oh the joy of something not entirely predictable!), and was sufficiently invested to devour it in a single evening (well if you count finally getting to bed at 2 am a single evening).
In terms of characters, there are plenty and I expect it would be very hard for anyone not already familiar with the series to get all the dynamics, that said the main BBEG will be familiar to anyone who ever consumed any X-Men related media--the resemblance is purely coincidental, I'm sure! LOL.
All in all, a great capstone to a fantastic series that's kept me entertained through good times and bad.
This time Gary is asked to join a group to find and save Mandy, thinking she's held hostage. Once things get going, there's more to it all. Helios maybe involved... or the problem.
I always look forward to the fun clips, the music references, the pop culture references, and so much more.
This is book 10 in the series, so there's many details given through the book of previous events, people, and more. Are they all important? Well, they maybe down a rabbit hole in a discussion but it really keeps everything interesting and makes me smile.
Some of the conversations take work to remember where we started. I feel like it's an ADHD conversation. lol. Goodness, the trips in conversations make me laugh and wonder, how did we get here? lol.
We get to see all those we have grown to love in this book, again. We even have those that have arrived in this world in a previous book. So much history between all these members.
These are always fun stories for me. The action, how Gary ends up in situations, and the references I grew up with. Fun!
There's parody and satire, then there's letting a villain off the hook for radioactive locust world-conquest while their succubus lawyer laments there's no way to beat the rap on protesting global warming. That's right, kids, we are So Back. It's another Phipps joint now with 200% more devil wand and schlong jokes, confusing telenovela shenanigans and a brutal sense of what needs to die of exposure at young age. Your Satirist in Chief, the Host with Most, the Phippsinator himself, seems to have become so unhinged he's indulging in the best worst plotline seen since his last novel.
You don't read CT Phipps for the plot; that will be bonkers and yet somehow not the point. You read him because you're either very ill and need a fix of what ails you or your demented sense of the twisted world need affirming. Either way, buckle up. You have been warned. Hide you kids, hide your wife (all the clones and android substitutes) this is going to be a wilder ride than usual and that, friends, is saying something.
Totally mad and insane fun story. Gary Karkofsky AKA The Supervillain without MercyTM is back and needs to save the day, aided by a collection of assorted weird and wonderful characters.
