Julie Seyler is a classically trained chef and the longtime voice behind TwoBitTart.com, where she’s spent 17 years documenting the beautifully chaotic intersection of dating, baking, and everyday heartbreak. Her writing is sharp, honest, and a little irreverent—perfect for readers who like their personal stories served with equal parts humor and humanity.

Her debut memoir, Gluten for Punishment, follows her search for love (and good pastry) after a series of romantic misadventures, blending kitchen escapades with the kinds of truths you only admit to yourself while biting into your seventh freshly baked cookie. It’s a book for anyone who’s ever rebuilt themselves from the crumbs up.

Julie lives in Southern California with her two cats, Mochi and Wasabi, who usually supervise from the most inconvenient spot imaginable. You can find more of her stories, recipes, and questionable decisions at TwoBitTart.com.

She had me at gluten. Extra points for vulnerability. Lots of extra points.

Seyler's honesty about all her relationships is refreshing. I mean, how often have any of us examined what went wrong? (TBH, most of what went wrong? The guys.) The stories are also funny, eye-opening and a bit of a lesson in romance.

And the recipes? OMG. I know what I'm bringing to the next party. Or 10.

Gluten for punishment is a great read for anyone who wants to know the signs of a relationship going south - and what to bake to deal with it.

Delicious reading! Ms Seyler recounts the joys and angst of love while pairing everything with mouthwatering delicacies. I cried, and felt like whipping up something sweet and carb heavy.

Ms. Seyler’s descriptive prose transports you through candid, raw moments in her rolllercoaster ride of relationships. Her gifted writing takes you into private moments of her life, where one can truly feel as a participant onlooker, cheering her on or yelling “run for the hills!” With humor, tears, blissfulness and hope, Ms. Seyler has accomplished a tasty read, even if you’re gluten free! ;)

I recently enjoyed a memoir and cookbook by Julie Seyler which I found to be a captivating glimpse into the life of a woman navigating relationships with pretentious, needy artistic types. While this book is primarily aimed at women, it offers valuable insights that resonate beyond its intended audience.

The author candidly explores her experiences, and while the men in her life certainly have their shortcomings, it’s clear that she also wrestles with her own superficial tendencies and a tendency to overthink. This duality adds depth to her narrative and makes her journey relatable, even for a man like me.

Throughout the book, we witness her gradual improvement in baking skills, which serves as a metaphor for her personal growth. Despite these culinary accomplishments, her self-esteem remains a work in progress. It is through the act of writing this book that she uncovers her inner voice, allowing her to express herself and confront her deeper truths.

The writing is well-crafted and engaging, filled with vivid imagery, though some sections may feel a bit dense with metaphors. While this may slow the pace at times, it also adds a layer of depth to her reflections.

The recipes are a delightful highlight, showcasing her passion for baking. I would have loved to see them integrated more into the narrative, but they certainly stand out beautifully on their own.

In summary, Julie Seyler has created a thoughtful and evocative work that combines personal storytelling with culinary inspiration. While the book is tailored for a female audience, it ultimately offers heartfelt insights that can be appreciated by anyone, making it a delightful read for those interested in memoirs and cooking alike.

Gluten for Punishment is a cathartic release of sensuality, sorrow, and sensational sweets. Julie combines honesty and heartache in the kitchen and whips up recipes that I can’t wait to try. Food has always connected people, and Julie has continued to do just that. Reading felt like coming over and sitting at the kitchen counter while Julie measured, kneaded, and recounted. She is raw and vulnerable in a way that empowers her and the reader, breathing hope and life into an otherwise somewhat lacking dating experience. Gluten for Punishment creates a duality between memoir and cookbook that is as enticing as coming home to a pint of ice cream after a date, and isn’t that what it’s all about?

This is not the typical cookbook nor the typical memoir; it is a collection of (delicious) recipes that accompany chapters of relationships, of the search for love, through the many types of love in one’s lifetime (though the author is still young!).

Through the evolution of each relationship, we see the evolution of Julie - her growth, maturity, lessons learned, reflections, and exquisite palette of pastries. Her insight and observations are poignant but subtle. It has been a week since I finished reading it and I’m left ruminating on a key question the book forces you to ask: what does love feel like to you? So simple and so hard to answer.

She has done an incredible job with this as her publication. Why not 5 stars? I felt some of the chapters were too long, and sometimes the thread of something significant was either entirely overlooked or glossed over - could be an editing issue. Overall, loved it! And can’t wait to try the recipes!

Review removed to prevent angst by another reviewer that read the same book and noticed similarities between the reviews. Regardless of that opinion, my rating remains the same with a few words from my original review. In short, give it a shot!

How I would describe this book:

- A heady fusion of memoir and cookbook—simmering with wit, sensuality, and recipes that deliver mouth happiness.
- Like the best desserts: indulgent, layered, and impossible to resist. Seyler’s honesty about love and flour will leave you sobbing into your mixing bowl.
- A masterclass in emotional precision—with buttercream and poetic justice.
- For anyone who’s ever loved, lost, or baked their way through heartbreak. Julie Seyler is your new kitchen confessor.

Acknowledgments:
Thank you to the publisher for providing an advance review copy. This book is a rare treat—one that lingers on the palate and in the heart long after the last page.

Rating: ★★★★★ (5/5) — Butter-stained and dog-eared, this book will be revisited like a favorite comfort recipe.

Julie Seyler, professionally trained chef and bold seeker of love, bares all in this brave, funny, and heartbreaking memoir.

I was a young adult in the '90s and was transported back to that time as she recounts the first relationship, which sucked me right in. Though I'm about the same age and lived in the same part of the US as the author during much of my life, I had vastly different romantic encounters, so I couldn't help but think about our parallel but disparate experiences as I read: Was it cowardice on my part not to dive unflinchingly into relationships like she did? Where would that have taken me? How would it have changed who I am now? Would I have survived the devastation of a similar situation? I've always had a curiosity about what other lives I could have lived and what a different choice might have done to change the course of my life. This novel allowed me to indulge in that for a brief time and traverse someone else's path, even indulging me in my voyeurism by providing pictures of intimate correspondence.

As the novel progresses, Ms. Seyler relives each of her major relationships (and even the dating blips that didn't reach that level of commitment), illustrating distinct kinds of love and hurt, putting on display all the ways love can scar us as well as underscoring that there are myriad variations of love itself. It's quite a buffet of emotions, kept warm by her evocative prose and detailed recall of time, place, and phrase.

Sandwiched between the chapters are the recipes, which are sophisticated and promise to be mouthwatering, each accompanied by hints or descriptions that give them a personal touch. Tarts, cookies, cakes, even a savory scone recipe--a wealth of adventurous edibles to accompany the adventures she just relayed.

I don't think my heart emerged unscathed from this book, much as I wanted to just slip into someone else's fearlessness to see how it feels. The love lessons explored--some long and hard-learned, some hit-and-runs--are unique in their details, but sound a common painful note for anyone who's loved and lost.

Gluten for Punishment: Just Desserts for the Heartbroken, Lovesick and Jilted is a touching collection of the authors real life romances, delivered with the modern sensibility of a smart, savvy professional who transforms her love of baking into not only a 2nd wave career, but a through line to the love stories that shaped her. I found it to be a very romantic and deeply felt book with just enough humor and sass to soften the edge on the dating experience during the last couple of decades.
The author recounts a lifetime of love stories that reflect the time and place they were born of – from gropey barstool assumptions to compartmentalizing narcissists, truly tragic true love, dating apps and the dreaded modern Manosphere, Julie shares the deepest parts of her varied and entertaining love life. And just like that cool friend, she gives us a soul reprieve in the form of literary diversion and self-deprecating humor just when we need it – Gingerbread Effigies anyone? It’s not all serious, just real.
And then the delicious sounding recipes all the way through. They remind us that the author, like all women, is skilled, insightful and not defined by a singular facet. Julie confirms in the forward and throughout the book, that we are not alone in the heartbreak of life. And Gluten for Punishment affirms that the kitchen is not just a place of servitude and capitulation for women but also a place for mindful and playful creation. Now that soothes the soul.

Bold and Original. Tantalizing. Appealing and at times, Noetic. Intriguing and so Cheeky. Adroit and deservedly Laudable.

GenX, this memoir is written for us. If you’ve loved and lost, or perhaps, loved and escaped, or loved and been hurt, even loved and found… then the pages upon which Julie has poured her heart out are for you. For us. For those who want, for those who have, for those who reflect and remember our own journeys through the decades.

I’ve been waiting for this book since I first heard it was coming out, and when it arrived, I savored it over several months. One could easily spend eternity reading and pausing and thinking and ruminating over all of our own why’s and what’s and how’s and on and on. Lucky for us, Julie has done that for us and shared it with the world.

And along the path, sprinkled in scrumptious-sounding recipes that, while I may not be the best at baking, make me want to attend culinary school so I can figure out sifting from whisking.

Totally (yes, GenX this is our word) worth the read. Worth meeting the author at an in-person event in your area. Worth appreciating and cherishing that in each of us, there are parts of Julie’s story that should be remembered and relived. And others that we should just move on from.

Buen Provecho!

Julie Seyler - a Gen-X baker and blogger shares a heartfelt 3 decade memoir of dating and relationships. Each chapter follows a collection of her delicious desserts that are so in tandem with the relationship just read. I found myself laughing as well as crying as I read her stories.
For some reason words starting with the letter R come to mind after I finished reading the book:

A Must Read!! Bon Apetit!

Review of Gluten for Punishment: Just Desserts for the Heartbroken, Lovesick, and Jilted by Julie Seyler

I devoured this book. I read it twice in six days. The first time I wolfed it down, intoxicated. Like a child after trick-or-treating, shoveling down candy as if each piece might vanish if I’ve waited too long. The second time I read it, I lingered, savoring every metaphor, every subtle turn of phrase, every goosebump, every laugh, and every tear.

A deft fusion of memoir and cookbook, it brims with wit, intellect, and a heady charm that lingers like the aroma of something richly spiced. It is organized like a mise en place of her past lovers—ready to be transformed, tasted, and sometimes torched. Each relationship with its accompanying recipes, like a Proustian reckoning of what was tasted and what was lost. There’s heat in the kitchen, too, and it’s not just from the oven—this book simmers with sensuality and rich, indulgent detail.

The tone shifts from chapter to chapter, but it’s no accident. Each one is written in the voice of a different lover, mirroring how she shaped herself to fit their worlds. Her own voice flickers at the edges, growing stronger with each recipe, each memory, each year that passes. Because, like the art of baking, love is unpredictable.

She is a self-professed lover of tattooed men, yet unable to commit to a needle herself. It’s that kind of paradox that defines this book—tender yet tough, restrained yet indulgent. It’s the kind of cookbook that seduces you with poetry and then surprises you with the sheer reliability of its recipes. The fact that a bit of butter, flour, and a sprinkle of heartbreak could result in something resembling a mouth orgasm? That’s alchemy.

While her prose is unctuous—rich and velvety—and like the best desserts, sometimes excessive, by contrast, the recipes are refreshingly unfussy—practical even. There’s no unnecessary fluff, no wading through pages of tangents while your hands are covered in flour, wondering what comes next. I’ve tried several of them so far, and each one has been reliably, predictably delicious and simply elegant.

But where she economizes in instructions, she lavishes us with metaphors, bon mots, and an emotional vocabulary so vivid I laughed out loud and sobbed into my mixing bowl. “The memories he paints, once pink and flesh Modiglianis, now seem distant and fraught with the complexities of our current reality, like our personal Guernica.”

Her moment of clarity—when she reclaims her voice—is nothing short of exhilarating. For anyone who’s been entangled with a narcissist, the way she dissects and dispatches the insidious Dexter is a masterclass in emotional precision. It lands like the perfect bite: layered and deliberate—sweet, salty, bitter, sour, with a texture both yielding and sharp. And Dexter? He doesn’t escape unscathed. He gets exactly what he deserves—his just desserts, plated with poetic justice.

Don’t let this book be eclipsed by the next trendy title on your bedside table. This is a legit cookbook. It belongs in the kitchen—stained with butter, dusted with flour. A trusted companion not just for your most beloved baked goods, but for navigating the messy, tender complexities of craving, of loving, of losing, and ultimately, of finding your way back to yourself.

Julie Seyler’s Gluten for Punishment: Just Desserts for the Heartbroken, Lovesick, and Jilted is a raw, emotional, and honest account of the many facets of dating. This memoir is not just about the ups and downs of dating; it’s a personal, unflinching look into the messiness of relationships, heartbreak, and healing. It’s sweet, savory, a little spicy and had me hanging on each word from Mr. Oxblood to Dexter and everyone in between. The writing is exquisite, just like the original recipes that are included. If you’re looking for a book that is as emotionally satisfying as it is delicious, Gluten for Punishment is a must-read.
