Desiré Hernández hates Suat. She also hates Ambar Díaz, or any other player on the Caballeros' team. Yet, life hates Desiré even more, so it's not surprising that she ends up playing for the local Bufones team and sharing the same stadium with her nemesis. Can she endure until the end of her three year contract to save her crumbling family from falling apart? Can finding a safe space among her teammates make things a little bit easier? Regardless, the Caballeros Captain doesn’t seem all that hateful when sporting a bloody nose…
This book combines the best of every trope it has! SUAT, the new sport the main characters play is exciting, innovative and contains a surprise in every match they play. Characters are very nice, I love each one for a different reason (except the one whose name starts with R). And the rivals to lovers… Wow! This is the first part of a trilogy, but the romance drives me crazy since the very first start! If you like sport romances and sapphic books, this is your next reading!!!
First of all: this is part of a trilogy! I did not realize that, and I want to warn others lol.
I liked this book a lot. The writing is very well done, the characters are incredibly interesting and detailed, and the story flows nicely. I was hooked right from the start (what is this sport???? Must find out) and the novel kept my interest throughout the entire read. I WILL be reading the following books, because I NEED to know where this goes. I recommend that you read this as well; everyone should support this author because I want these sequels. The characters were the standout feature of this novel, and I need to learn more of their backstories and where they end up! I think that the best and worst features of this novel were both that its part one of a trilogy, I will explain:
The author clearly knew what they were doing and had a plan, and they settled in to take advantage of the page count of a trilogy. There are SO many plotlines started in this novel, so many bits of backstory teased (I need to know about the “back alley incident”?!), and just generally a lot of stuff set up. The scale of this novel wouldn’t be able to be handled in a single novel. I like this, because the story is expansive and there are so many hooks that I want to see the payoff for. The pace of the novel also does not rush; the timeline is relatively small, and you can clearly tell that there is a lot more to come. This was like season 1 of a TV show, with many more still to come.
The downside of this is that there wasn’t a lot of resolution at the end of this novel (be warned). I walked away feeling satisfied (I’m not mad!), but I will be sad if the sequels never show up and I don’t get answers to my many questions. My overall impression of this series (and by extension this novel too) will end up depending on how well the next two books handle everything that was set up in this first one.
I should also mention that there is a LOT of sport talk. You never know what you will get with a sport novel; sometimes lots and sometimes very little. If you hate sport books then you might not fall in love with this one. I’m neutral on sports in books, but I still very much enjoyed this one. It probably helped that the sport was semi-made up by the author, so I didn’t have the experience of being lost and confused by a sport the author assumes the reader will understand.
4.25 ⭐️ i had so much fun with this! i really liked learning about suat, the concept of the sport was interesting. i also think that the characters are complex and well developed. the author obviously has a plan and i cannot be more excited to continue this series! i dont think the writing was the strongest, however ginger creek makes up for it by writing an exciting world with characters i feel invested in. i also loved the representation in this! im so very excited for book 2 and will be following the progress! if youre a fan of aftg i think you should give this a go, who doesnt love gays playing fake sports??
I found the dialogue between Desi and Amber very annoying and juvenile and it became too repetitive. I’m also not sure I about the writing style and the sport as a whole. Also can we get rid of Roberto? The abuse just became a bit too much
