I loved reading this rare book. It is by a famous Korean author who's essays are widely read in Korean schools. Affinity is one essay. Affinity doesn't really describe the Korean word 인연. It is a difficult concept but put simply is to do with beings having a kind of karma or destiny to be together or come together. It means that your souls are intertwined even if you never meet in this life. Yet you miss the other if you are not together. That's the best I can describe it. The essay describes a young man who meet a girl and then meets her again 10 years later and 10 years after that. Each time is a different experience. If you see the Korean film My Love, Eundong, this essay is quoted in part of the film and the whole film is loosely based of this essay and I think a few other poems and writings of Pi Chun-deuk. There are many references in the film to this essay. It is translated in the version I read, which is a collection of his work called The Skylark. I loved it. It is vivid and touching, though some of the essay surprised me.
