On the run and hiding from ‘the suits’, Carolyn’s life is far from straightforward. After her mother and brother go missing in a most extraordinary way, (through a hole to another world which appears in the kitchen wall!), she is determined to track them down and bring them home. But life is never that easy! Rescued and protected by a group of unusual and like minded ‘people’, Carolyn hones her magic and fighting skills. Whilst answering a ‘call’ to retrieve a human from another world she’s faced with a quick decision and ends up bringing a demon back with her. Little did she know what effect this demon would have on her. As each day passes her strengths grow and her magic develops to assist her in her quest to track down her family, but there are decisions to make that will affect the rest of her life.

“The bloody patch where the cooker had once been now closed over with a sizzling slurp. She couldn’t believe she’d almost been dragged into hell.”

This was a complex YA fantasy story, with a bit of a love triangle.

Carolyn was an okay character, but I did struggle to really understand her at times. She came across as a little bit strange and muddled, and it was quite hard to really get where she was coming from, and what exactly was real and not real.

The storyline in this was also a bit hard to follow, and again I wondered what was real and what wasn’t real. There was a strong fantasy element, and mentions of magic and portals, and trying to keep track of who was who and the significance of everything was tough, making this a more complex fantasy story than I am used to.

There was some romance in this, but this was complicated by a bit of a love triangle, and a couple of other storylines that played into the fantasy aspect.

The ending to this was a bit of a cliff-hanger, leaving both Carolyn and her demon Note in slightly dodgy circumstances.

Louise White has a lot of talent, truly gifted and an author to pay attention to! I'm astounded this is her first book! I'm so blown away that I'm practically speechless, a five star plus read, worthy of full recommendation! Now onto the review..Spoiler Alert...Spoiler Alert.....Spoiler Alert............

Once I rose above the noise and confusion. Just to get a glimpse beyond this illusion I was soaring ever higher, but I flew too high. Though my eyes could see I still was a blind man. Though my mind could think I still was a mad man. I hear the voices when I'm dreaming, I can hear them say. Carry on my wayward son, KANSAS LYRICS "Carry On Wayward Son"

When you think of magic, mages and demons let me guess Harry Potter or Buffy The Vampire Slayer springs to mind, am I right? Well this isn't a television show or movie you can safely view from home or you can hit pause when the scenes gets scary. No this is my life, imagine a doorway leading to another realm or planet appearing. Just like in Stargate SG-1 minus all the fancy lights and armed Marines. Every time the gate opens something explosive happens forcing me to answer its call. Just like with any door demons, monsters and other Otherworlders comes out and not all of them are very friendly. Who am I you ask? To my friends I'm Carolyn McInally

To my enemies, I'm known as the Destroyer!

The Calling:Carolyn- She'd survived fine for the past two years with no-one to help her. Her life was dedicated to killing demons, not making friends with them the way he did. Too late, she remembered his speed at saving the demon, and as he moved impossibly quickly toward her, she froze. His impressive form eclipsing all thought, her breathing stopped.
Ethan-

The destroyer was unpredictable, a wildcard who could unleash hell within a blink of an eye, but could the girl be taught? That's where I step in along with an assembled team of fellow mages and beings. We're not a league of extraordinary gentlemen... we're warriors!
 photo Ethan 3.jpg

Note wasn't a friend or an ally. The snakish demon was sent on a mission when his paths crossed the destroyer, in order to survive he'll need her help.

But time is running out, the clock is ticking!

You wanna know more? Huh....sure you do! My advice buy the book! Its that damn good and you won't be disappointed. Happy demon killings nahhhhhh meant reading hahahahahaha!

Carolyn's existence takes a definite turn for the worse the day her brother and mother get sucked into a gateway leading to a demonic realm.

She turns into a feral, mindless demon killer known as the destroyer. Her demon killing weapon of choice: a screwdriver. Personal hygiene? Not so much.

Over the next two years, she is hunted by several factions:

* Government suits, who want to experiment on her.

* A ruggedly handsome, scarred enforcer who wants to recruit her.

* And demons who want to breed her.

But wouldn't you know it; it's a SNAKE demon that brings her back from the edge of insanity by anchoring her. Huh, who would have thought...

Just goes to say that you shouldn't judge someone by their appearance...

But wait; I almost forgot. Notechis has another form as well:

Guess I spoke too soon...

Turns out, Note's inner personality matches his beautiful human form. Surprisingly enough he was actually my favorite character in the book. Go figure. All the others were forgettable and fairly uninteresting, which is why I frequently put down this book in favor of other, more interesting reads.

The book itself was a 1 star read. Note made it a whole lot better. I give this book 1.75 stars.

Guess I'm too old for regular YA novels.

And now I definitely deserve cake:

Because...

Oh Jeanny & Meigan, you're going to laugh...

Or roll your eyes at me...

Based on the reviews I thought for sure this series would be good, so I actually purchased book #2 as well. Needless to say, this was before we started our Buddy Read...

It's too late to return it for a refund.

So what should I do now?

Demons? Check ! Portals? Check! One tough warrior heroine with a bone to grind with said demons? Check! Magic, Mystery and Mayhem? Check! And last, but certainly not least, one demon that slips under her guard and steals our warrior’s heart? Check and Double check! Whew! It’s all here in The Calling by Louise G. White! Now let’s talk details, the journey, the battles and the romance and the unlikely troupe of heroes fighting the good fight against evil.

Carolyn witnessed the unimaginable, her mother being pulled through a portal to a dimension of demons, right in her kitchen, and where has her brother disappeared to? Will they come back for Carolyn or will she go off the grid in an effort to find her family or avenge their deaths. One demon at a time, she becomes known as The Destroyer, as their number fall at her feet. Somebody knows who she is, someone has noticed and they are coming after her. Is it the government? The demons, or perhaps an unlikely group of beings to aid in her mission, each with their own special “abilities.”

All was great until Carolyn, for some unknown reason, saves a demon and brings him back to our realm, and of course, his sweet innocence to this world is endearing and his handsome human persona has her hormones raging, but can they rally be together? The day her mother was taken is firmly etched into her mind and he is one of them…

Louise G. White has created a non-stop world of action, turmoil and hidden secrets. With brilliant characters to shine across each page and graphic detailing of each scene, you will be transported to contemporary Scotland, a land known for its magical tales. Incredible world building, fleshing out of characters from the inside out and youthful romantic confusion all help raise The Calling into the realm of must reads, young adults on up!

Carolyn is this crazy, strong willed feral tendency leaning teenager with a big heart and a strong moral compass. I don't think it's possible to ask for a better leading lady for a young adult borderline new adult genre book.

Normally, I tend to get annoyed with the heroines in teenager based stories but that never happened. I couldn't help but cheer for Carolyn as she faced each obstacle that was thrown at her. Some parts I was totally outraged and was like "do you not know who this girl is!?!?", and others I couldn't help but do a "awe moment". Besides what I've already mentioned, I think I liked Carolyn so much because she realized she couldn't act like a spoiled brat and that raging at people wouldn't get her anywhere. Just like when she'd start to act bitchy she'd stop herself, or she'd at least acknowledge it and apologize for it. I thought this was a nice change.

Carolyn's love interest in this book happens to be Note, whom I couldn't get enough of. I really wanted more from his perspective. He just totally intrigued me from the very beginning. He's a bit of the strong silent type with a playful charm. Note's also a bit different from your everyday guy in terms of what he his.

Overall, I loved the different elements to this story. I thought the romance aspect was great, it didn't go to far, but it made sense with the plot. All of the characters were different, some were funny and left you wanting more, while others were a tad evil. The action and demons/otherworlders were very cool and definitely kept me reading.

The only issue I had with this story was the very beginning because the first couple chapters completely confused me. However, it quickly became apparent what was going on when Carolyn realized what was happening to her. So, really it wasn't too big of a deal, because the rest of the story flowed so well.

I'd definitely recommend this. I would say it's more for teens 16+ and adults.

I couldn't get into this YA novel. I wanted to finish this book badly but I just kept finding other things to do. When I'd force myself to read the book i'd zone out. I kept trying to find positives in the story to concentrate on in hopes i'd eventually become interested in any aspect of this story. Turns out I couldn't name one that encouraged me enough to continue it.
I found the protagonist to be as complex as a picture book & as interesting as kitty litter. I wasn't a fan of the writting, I felt like I was reading a middle school level book. It was all overly simplistic which made it boring & so I decided to call it quits.

Bombastic: adj. (of speech, writing, etc.) High-sounding; high-flown; inflated; pretentious.
Pretentious: adj. characterized by assumption of dignity or importance, especially when exaggerated or undeserved: “A pretentious, self-important writer.”

Oh, like, OMG! Like, ya know, like, she said, and then he said, and then…
And then, I bashed my head on the floor. This is a “Destroyer”? More like a whiny little spoiled brat who can’t do anything on her own. Preteen angst, anyone? I suppose preteens like this, but I find it a crying shame that preteens are subjected to this dross, telling them that strong girls aren’t acceptable – that they need some “big strong love interest” to hold their hands and make everything OK. Ugh. I had to laugh, “Sean waited until the process was complete, and Carolyn admitted that he might be right aout the ankle which now sported a raised and ragged line of scar tissue, marring the skin at the base of her shin. Good thing she wasn’t vain.” Wasn’t vain? Oy.

So, adult warning, intelligent teen warning. The concept was good. The “heroine”? So not worth it.

I received this book from the publisher in exchange for a realistic review. All thoughts are my own.

The Calling focuses on teenager Carolyn whose mother and brother were captured and taken through a gateway to another realm. After this strange occurrence, Carolyn's life is never the same and she soon discovers that she is a "Destroyer": someone who receives a calling to gateways in order to deal with wayward demons who inhabit the world inside them.

The story starts off a little confusing as some things just happen, or just are, without a lot of explanation but things do begin to unfold as the story progresses which makes it easier to follow.

The plot becomes really interesting when Carolyn makes a rash decision to take a demon through the gateway and into the human world. The demon, Note, transforms in order to resemble a human and just so happens to be extremely attractive which Carolyn can't help but notice. They become "anchored" to one another which creates a complicated situation that I really enjoyed reading about.

Note is likened to Orlando Bloom in Lord of the Rings
Carolyn is pursued by a government agency who want to experiment on her but is quickly rescued by a group of people with similar supernatural powers. They return to a secret compound where Carolyn learns to improve and control her skills so that she is not a danger to herself or others. The main plot, and the most interesting in my opinion, however is in the form of Carolyn and Note's anchoring. It's complicated and needs a fast solution and I enjoyed the progression of their relationship. Note is by far my favourite character in the book as he is just so sweet and likeable. I would have loved more from his perspective. There are hints of a love triangle but it doesn't develop very far. The other characters were interesting but didn't leave as lasting an effect as Note did. Carolyn as a heroine is okay but I didn't find her to be particularly remarkable. I didn't dislike her but felt like there was something missing.

I think the fantasy world that has been created is really impressive and I appreciated the creative detail that has been put into creating such a world. The glossary at the back is a nice touch. I also liked the setting of Scotland as being Scottish it's so nice to see my own country incorporated into a fantasy world. (Loved the Argos references!)

I received this book in exchange for an honest review.

The Calling started out as a book that had me reading and re-reading a bit slower than my normal pace to try and figure out what was going on. Even though I was a bit confused in the very beginning, the story unfolded beautifully. After finishing the book, I now appreciate the way Louise Write started the story. As the reader, I was put in the same mind set as the protagonist, Carolyn. She spent two years after her mother and brother's disappearance being a confused, wild being with new found magical abilities. Gateways to different realms called to her, and she followed an intense instinct to kill demons without any thought process behind it. After an encounter with a special mage and demon, Carolyn finds herself feeling 'human' again. She brings the demon (Note) with her back to her world, and they end up sharing a bond that Carolyn never saw coming.

Notechis didn't rise to the bait. "You are right Ethanasius," and he fixed Ethan with a bright stare. The destroyer is..." and Ethan expected 'horrific', 'mad', or even 'a bitch', "...glorious," he concluded, to Ethan's surprise.

Note stole my heart so quickly. He and Carolyn's progressing relationship gave me overwhelming warm and fuzzy feelings. Carolyn is such a bad ass. She is a strong female character with purpose and confidence. They end up teaming up with a small group of people wanting to help train Carolyn, including a few mage's and a demon. The leader of the group, Ethan, was not my favorite character, but he was so well written. I was also taken with a character named Sean, who is dark and quiet. I was wildly impressed with the characterization and development in this novel. I believe it is her debut novel, which is absolutely nuts! She seamlessly blends fantasy action/adventure with the bonds of friendships and romance.

I needed to devour this story, yet I did not want it to end. The ending has my anxiety through the roof! I am extremely excited yet very nervous for the second book.

Do yourself a favor, and add this book to your TBR shelf right now!!!

*Copy provided by the author in exchange of an honest review!*

If I'd be asked if I would recommend this book, the answer would be yes. Yes, if you like a sci-fi feel and if you are into strong female characters who are capable of showing vulnerability without passing for whiny sissies.

But I gotta be honest: the beginning was a bit problematic for me. The first chapters were a bit confusing, since the story starts in medias res, but the flashbacks clear everything up and after that the story flows smoothly. And it is a good story, no reason denying it. I wouldn't go as far as describing it as the perfect 5-stars book, but it holds the promise of an equally good, if not even better, sequel; the author has the talent and capabilities to develope the series so that I am confident that, continuing to read it, the 5-stars on my part will surely come.

Of course, this is a matter of personal taste, and what I might label with 3.5-stars others might consider 5-full-stars.

I admit, I am holding back, because I want to see were the series goes. Usually, in a series where the books are not autoconclusive I reserve judgment till the end of the series (I did this for Richelle Mead's Vampire Academy and Georgina Kincaid), because a book might be good, but it would be cancelled out by a bad series ending.

What I really appreciated about this book:
1)Carolyn. She's a character to my liking. She's determined, strong but vulnerable at the same time, she's the right amount bitchy but not meanly so. A great character I am looking forward to read more about;
2) Note. I really like Note. I want to cuddle him;
3) I really enjoyed the "love triangle", Carolyn-Note-Ethan, and I gotta say, I really don't know whom to root for.

Thumbs up, and good wishes to the author.

I had to slow down my reading quite a bit from normal to follow along with what was going on in this story. The principal reason being that the story is constructed in such a way as to deliberately have you wondering, just what’s going on here? That means what little just-in-time information you’re spoon fed by the author needs to be something that registers as an important clue, and not something you glossed over without paying attention. But the extra concentration and slower read was well worth the added effort. What emerged from the initial fog was an intriguing tale of magic, wonder, and the supernatural that should be fabulously appealing to YA audiences with a penchant for dark fantasy.

Basically, our lead, a fifteen year old girl, has had her life torn apart, and any sense of self shattered. Anyone she loved is now gone, any sense of security she used to keep her out of a permanent fight-or-flight mode, vanished forever. And, just so we’re clear, this is chapter one I’m talking about. The precise nature of the natural as well as the supernatural dangers she faces come into increasing focus from there, one chapter after another, tempting me to wonder why the author didn’t title this, Life Well Past the Breaking Point.

Though this is a “through a portal” story, put aside any idea that this is akin to The Chronicles of Narnia. This requires a more mature teen audience, sixteen or over, I would imagine, and is not a G-rated story by any means; the blood and gore present in chapter one alone should be all the clue you need. But if you like the horror and the terror dialed up high with your fantasy, and you’re willing to be a little more patient as a reader to put in the extra work needed to puzzle out what’s going on with the clues the author does give you, you might want to check this one out.

An unforgettable, unmissable read for all ages!

No. 1: add this to your ‘to-read’ shelf now!
No. 2: Prepare to be sucked into an extraordinary world filled with fantastic characters and remarkable settings.

This exciting debut novel is an incomparable YA fantasy with strong characters and powerfully provocative prose that pushes the boundaries of the genre. What grabbed me most was how the characters grew and developed throughout the story, as they changed concurrently as events unfolded. Carolyn and Note’s developing relationship is seamlessly woven amid an otherworldly adventure, which primarily adds to the realism of the story. Louise G White has created an unexpected world that’s totally unique and full of inspired imaginative concepts and intriguing premise. The different realms and ‘the otherworlders’ are so deftly captured, it is as though the author breathes life onto the page.

The Calling is a classic tale of good versus evil with the additional element of a strong, heroic female lead that is a fantastic role model for women/ girls. This electrifying, fast-paced action adventure is a thoroughly entertaining read so cleverly realised upon the page. Desperate for Carolyn to make the right choices, I sat with tense anticipation on the edge of my seat as she travelled into the Demon realms with Note and Ethan.

The beautiful blend of magic and mystery is a dazzling combination within this sensational story that had me hooked from the first page. I would highly recommend this to all fantasy lovers and I can’t wait until the next instalment of the series!!

I would like to thank the author for providing me with an e-copy of her novel, for reading and reviewing purposes.

The Calling is a story of Carolyn McInally who's life change suddenly with a disappearance of her mother and brother. That's when she learn about other realms and existing of demons. She also acquire magical powers and becomes someone called a destroyer.
What I enjoyed most about this story is a description of magic, Otherworldly creatures and mages. Louise White used common tropes from fantasy stories and made them in her own way unique. The character development of Carolyn is very strong, at the end of the book we see how she changed though she still has traits of a teenage girl which shows her as a flawed character that we can relate to. My favourite side character was Sean (maybe because of his resemblance to Benedict Cumberbatch? ;) ).
The book ends on a cliffhanger and I desperately need to find out what's going to happen next!

Thanks for Louise White for sending me the book.

This is the kind of story that could get bogged down in complicated details - but it doesn't. Right from the beginning, which ignited my curiosity, the author smoothly explains the fantastical, confusing details. You always know enough not to get frustrated, yet still wonder exactly what is going on, which motivates you to read on. Understanding this world is, as Carolyn says at one point, like doing a puzzle, gradually putting pieces together. The development of most characters is good and it's easy to care about what will happen to them.

I didn't realize until the end that there would be a sequel, but I would definitely read the next book. There are a few things from Carolyn's early years that need to be explained. I also didn't realize that it is advertised as a YA book, because all ages can enjoy it, as I certainly did.

Actual rating - 2.5

The characters in this were okay, and I felt quite sorry for Carolyn at the start of this, as what she had to see wasn't very nice.

This started out quite confusing, and I found it difficult to get into unfortunately. There was quite a bit of action, but as the story was quite confusing at times, and was difficult to get into, I found it to be a pretty slow read.

Overall, Not a bad read, but It couldn't keep my interest well.

***I received the eBook free as a review copy from the author/publisher in exchange for an honest review***

This book never lost my interest, even with outside distractions and my current reading slump (that is now over!) I found myself enjoying it immensely and so invested in the story that time passed without me realising and I could look up to find the sky dark, hours after I’d picked it up!

Everything including pace and relationships moved incredibly fast: one of my immediate worries was the relationship between Carolyn and Note feeling like insta-love because looking at timings it was - no doubt about that - but before you run off, hear me out, because I’m always the first to turn away from a book when that’s mentioned, and in this case not only did it work plotwise (there’s an explanation) but I never got frustrated and actually liked it!

Carolyn was such an interesting main character to follow. Developed faultlessly her personality jumped from the pages. Of course at times the endless amount of problems got to her and mistakes were made, but I loved how she recovered, particularly when it involved the help of a certain snake demon called Note… He was so damn adorable and hilarious, even when he didn’t necessarily try/realise making it impossible to keep a grin off my face.

Every single character had something fascinating about them which I couldn’t get enough of. There’s always one exception though and I have a feeling Mel is going to cause more problems than she’s worth in the sequel; which by the way I’m simply dying to get my hands on!

The Calling is a thrilling debut from an author I’m excited to read more from, to which I recommend to all lovers of YA fantasy.

I loved this book. The beginning was absolutely incredible. Carolyn walks in to see her family being destroyed and something happens to her. She becomes this beautiful feral wild thang. She is called the Destroyer and her purpose is to kill Demons who steal humans.

Let's just pause here a moment and reflect on the Feral Wild Thang. When I say feral, I actually mean feral, as in the movie Nell with the feral child, starring Jodi Foster. It's fantastic like that too. I am soooo envious that Author Louise White thought of this idea before I did. Now that she's written it and I've read it, I can't use it. Maybe in about 20 years. But for now, I can't. So . . . major envy here.

The story is filled with thrilling action as Carolyn completes her mission of destroying demons. Eventually, she starts to move toward a more aware mind and way from being a raving killing beast. The transition is fascinating to watch. Then, several possible love interests appear, each with potential ulterior motives, leaving the reader unclear who's safe and best for her. I'm rooting for one male, but I'm not sure if Louise is with me on that. :) Deception and betrayal complicate the plot and the characterization is excellent, allowing you to feel deeply for Carolyn's team.

Several side plots further enrich the story and mysteries abound. Do some of the secondary characters have a relationship? What is the relationship of the strongest Mage to the God-like Protector? What is this parasitic power that has attached to her first, and secondly to Note? So many mysteries... I'm looking forward the next book!

I love fantasy, so I was quite eager to read Louise G. White’s debut novel, The Calling.

Like several fantasy books, it takes a few chapters to really begin to understand the dynamic and workings of the world, but once you’re in, you’re captivated, and I can guarantee you will not want to leave it behind.

The Calling is beautifully written with strong characters, especially the protagonist, Carolyn. So often, I’ve found female leads irritating, sometimes downright unlikable. But Ms. White has created a powerful heroine in Carolyn, and you can’t help but root for her as she embarks on a journey to save her mother and her brother.

On a personal note, Ms. White and her book came to me at a time I desperately needed a distraction, an escape. The Calling was perfect, truly one of the few bright spots in a week of sadness and loss. I can’t begin to tell you how thankful I was to have this story, this world, waiting for me.

The Calling is a colorful, suspenseful, sensual, magical tale that keeps you wanting more even after you’ve turned the final page. I am very much looking forward to the sequel, Chasing the Demon, which will be released later on this year.

Thank you so much, Ms. White. Your world, your characters, your story, is a joy and a genuine privilege.

This book took me by surprise in every way, I finally finished reading it in the early hours of the morning, last night, had started it the day before.

The story is magical, enthralling, intense, a rollercoaster of a ride. You have fantasy, different worlds, dimensions, underworlds, strong characterisation, love, romance, biology, amazingly beautiful, fantastic writing, an imagination out of this world.

Story touches on religion v magic, however not in a way you would imagine. One of the best fantasies ive read in a while.

Think beauty and the beast meets daughter of smoke and bone meets mortal instruments, if you enjoyed these you will love this story.

This is a stunning book and I urge anyone who loves fantasy to buy it, its unputdownable.

I won't tell you the plot as many over reviewers have already done this, its the kind of book that really takes you by surprise, although I have outlined some similarities to other fiction books, there is so many more elements to it than that.

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an unbiased review.

When I agreed to review this book I did so with a sense of trepidation. The Calling is not a book I’d normally read, in fact it is very much the sort of novel I’d see on the bookshelf and walk past. Female lead – check, magic stuff- check, forest on the cover…I’m out of here. Had I followed my instincts I’d have missed out on one of my favourite reads of the year so far.

My main problem with female leads, generally, is how weak and two dimensional they tend to be, (Since having a daughter I’ve become a totally militant feminist) always dependant on a male counterpart to bounce off of, or motivated by tenuous means they tend to fall into one of two camps:
1) Whiny, uninteresting, passive foils for someone else.
Or
2) Use cartoonish levels of aggression posing as assertiveness.
Louise White, in Carolyn, bucks this trend and in style. Carolyn is simply the strongest young female lead I’ve read in a long time.
Louise writing is remarkably assured for a debut author, using various POVs to move along her narrative at pace and giving her characters motives without any judgement and emotions without forcing the point. Louise makes the magical, a realistic component, something that rarely happens for me as a reader. I found myself completely engaged in the story and invested in the people she’s created. I hadn’t expected such pacey or skilled writing in a book of this type.
Shows what I know.

A great debut novel. I’m looking forward to seeing how Louise uses the skills she’s learned writing this book to bring us more magic in the follow up.

This book was given to me by the Lovers of Paranormal in exchange for an honest review.

Carolyn came home one day to witness a bizarre experience, where her mother disappears. She then realised that her brother was missing too. She would do anything to find her mother and brother but nothing is straightforward. She possesses mystical powers, where she can travel between gateways to other dimensions amongst other things. Note is a demon who has all good intentions towards Carolyn. Then there is Ethan, who has is own magical powers but even though he is there to help Carolyn, I found that I was unable to like to him. Carolyn and Note are captured by a Paranormal Investigative Unit, who tortures them because of their differences.

When they are rescued, they get together with Ethan's team to combat evil. This novel is full of magical and mystical creatures and the story is very gripping. Note and Carolyn care deeply for each other and have a very sweet relationship, which they are not given a chance to develop for various reasons. I found this book fascinating with so many twists and turns, which made it difficult to predict what would happen next. It ended on a real cliff hanger and I cannot wait to read the next book to see, where the story leads.

I would fully recommend this book, if you like reading about demons, magic and different dimensions. It would keep you on tender hooks. A big thank you to the author for giving me the opportunity to read this book, which deserves a five star rating.

From the first sentence of 'The Calling', I felt I was going to enjoy it. Louise White has combined her great writing style, world building and plot development to create a thrilling novel.

The story focuses on 15-year-old Carolyn whose mother and brother vanish through a gateway to another realm inhabited by demons. Fast-forwarding her life two years, Carolyn discovers she has become the Defender, answering ‘the call’ of gateways and pursuing misbehaving demons on the other side.

I loved the originality and description of the demon realms, their chiefs and mages and the magic gateways. Louise White has created an intriguing magic system and character roles such as the Protectorate, Breeders and Defenders, and interesting concepts such as anchoring and claiming.

White’s characters are distinct, well-defined and believable, and their stories add to the complexity and intrigue of the story. Carolyn is a dynamic and gritty character whose life is in upheaval. After losing her family, she discovers emerging powers and must dodge sinister government agents. After joining the Protectorate team, she is challenged by confusing emotions evoked by those on the team and in particular Note, a young demon she brings back to Earth through a gateway. She must decide who she can trust and determine if her feelings are true or the product of rituals and magic.

The Calling is a terrific fantasy for YA and older readers. I was captivated from the beginning and will definitely read the next book in the series.

I absolutely love this book and can't wait for more! I need to know what happens… Guess I’ll have to wait If there is a second book I will be sure to read it.

First of all I want to thank the author for sending me a copy of this book.

My first thought when I finished this book was. Why… why is it finished already. My second thought was that this book should be made into a movie. Really. I would compare this book with the hungergame books. I just couldn’t stop reading, every page was filled with new and exciting things. Although I found the first chapters very confusing. Maybe I was a little bit sleepy or it could be that we were seeing things from the vantage point of Carolyn. The way she felt the confusion she felt. Maybe that is why it was hard, for me, to follow the first chapters. But the storyline is strong and it enthralls you.

The characters in this book are strongly written. They are moving, they are changing along with the story. Sometimes they even seem to come to life. I love the way the relationship between Carolyn and Note develops. Sometimes not in ways one would suspect. The world created by Louise G. White is an unique one. The descriptions of the different realms and characters ‘the otherworlders’ are always so vivid that it’s not difficult to imagine the world this author created.

So my conclusion-> Everyone should read this book or at least ad it to your to read list. This book is certainly a good read for any age.

When you miss a book after you're done reading it, you know it was good. That's how I feel about "The Calling."

Carolyn is only 15 years old when her world suddenly turns upside down and she must live with bizarre, magical changes to herself in a strange world that includes a variety of underworlds. Carolyn is a strong personality, yet she retains some of her teenage habits even as she learns of her new responsibilities.

Review of The Calling By Louise White

Hold on to your socks people this fantasy takes you on a wild ride. The Calling is full of exceptionally exciting images in a world within a world it’s to say the least, outstanding.
Get ready for demons, monsters and other worldly creatures to comes out and play in you imagination. However, a word of warning they’re not all pleasant.
Carolyn McInally, or to her enemies, the Destroyer!Has survived fine for the past two years with no-one to help and not much of a memory of that time either. Her life for those two years and after has been committed to killing demons. However, there’s one that she becomes soft on and brings him back into the world. This can only mean trouble right? Well, as for as the other destroyer, Ethan, is concerned and some unfriendly others, yes this is going to let to a handful of difficulties. And Carolyn is left to figure out who to trust so that she may stay alive –could a demon be the one she lays her trust in?
The Calling is a marvelous fantasy for all ages. I was fascinated by the world Louise created and the character that are larger than live. Wonderful written, fun adventure, a real must read.

Louise white's The Calling is one of the best and most readable books I have had the pleasure to come across. Though admittedly unfamiliar with this genre, I was enthral led by the strong characters, the vivid atmospheres and environments created. The uniquely stylistic and fluid language used, as well as the extraordinary degree of imagination that White possesses skilfully conveys the worth of this debut. Although dealing with far fetched concepts, the well rounded nature of the novel and the breadth of White's skill in storytelling is such that my disbelief was suspended throughout. The Calling is White's first literary work, yet it's accessibility definitely bespeak a writer of real talent; I foresee that the seeds have definitely been sown for a very fruitful career, and I look forward to further works from her. This is a book that I recommend to fantasy enthusiasts as well as the general reader.

The Calling is a story of Carolyn McInally who's life change suddenly with a disappearance of her mother and brother. That's when she learn about other realms and existing of demons. She also acquire magical powers and becomes someone called a destroyer.

I was sucked into Carolyns world, desperate for her to make the right choices during this fast paced adventure, and loved the characters, snake demon Note, and Ethan, who Carolyn travels demon realms with. The book is beautifully written and I can't wait until the next instalment in the series. Would recomend to fantasy lovers of all ages.
Excellent read, classic tale of good against evil with the unusual added benefit of a young strong female character who is both feminist and feminine, good role model for young women and a good example for young men.
It’s a great fantasy adventure where Carolyn's. I'll recommanded this book to my friends.

THE CALLING is an intriguing read. The author has the uncanny ability to make the unbelievable believable. Fantasy and magic seemed very realistic to me as I read along. I found myself caring about the characters, human or otherworlders. They all seemed so well drawn that their supernatural powers were completely convincing to me, seemingly as natural as the surprising love story that slowly evolved between two quite surprising individuals.

This book fascinates as well as entertains as it twists its way through worlds unseen but quite realistically depicted by a very deft hand. I recommend it as a way to take a vacation from your own world and enter a realm that will surprise, enchant, and thrill you.

I've never read a fantasy book like this before. It is a little like Alice in Wonderland, who travels through the looking glass. The main character, Carolyn, travels to a different dimension. She is the heroine, who is trying to save her mother and brother. She goes on a journey where at the beginning nothing makes sense. Then you begin to understand the dynamics of the underworld.
Her journey is also a coming of age journey, where she experiences love for the first time. It is in the form of a love triangle that adds a nice amount of tension to the scenes.
The story is left open at the end so anything could happen between Carolyn, Ethan, and Nate.
I enjoyed reading the book and can't wait for the next one.

First my thanks to the author for sending me a copy of this lovely book. An enthralling fantasy read with a little bit of everything without becoming to convoluted. You've got magic other worlds, romance you name it. Our protagonist thinks she knows all there is to know as she take her new role as a guardian for greedy humans against humans until one is brought to her home. It is nice to to read a female protagonist that is a feminist that does not act in way that shows she would have been happier as a man. In conclusion great face paced book to read that did not drag on.
