From the very first chapter of medical mistakes of the doctors mistaking loin for groin, the shocking treatment Tilly receives breaks my heart. The endless gaslighting and pain she suffers but still she has hope. Her family forevering pushing for an answer.
The variety of responses from Doctors is astonishing with some listening and actively trying to find an answer for Tilly to the ones who dismiss her and seek to pass her onto to someone else and label her a problem.
The heartwarming staff and patients who have their own struggles and reaffirms Tilly is not the only patient being failed by the UK bureaucratic system. I was disgusted how Leena was treated, left without treatment and to die due to a tickbox exercise.
I continue to follow Tillys story on instagram and hope one day she can fully live again
This is the first book I have read by this incredible and brave woman. She has also wrote another book called 'That Oxford Girl: A Real Student's Guide to Oxford University'
The first thing I have got to say is an absolutely HUGE CONGRATULATIONS and thank you to the author Tilly Rose! She has written this memoir and told her story in a beautiful, honest and eye opening way and I truly believe that everyone should read this book! I will start by admitting that this book is not my usual choice of book being non-fiction so I wasn't sure how I was going to feel about it but I have had several problems myself trying to get a diagnosis so was intrigued in reading it. I am extremely pleased that I did as it is such an eye opening, intriguing, emotional and educational read and I would genuinely highly recommend that there should be a copy made available in everywhere.
This memoir takes us on a journey through the Tilly's life as a patient for over 20 years while trying to discover what is causing a large range of serious, scary and painful symptoms. It is an emotionally packed book filled with romance, pain, frustration, love, heartbreak, family, humour, friendship and absolutely every emotion that you can think of. I will be honest and admit that I was not quite sure what to expect when I picked up this book but whatever it was I got so much more!! Tilly's fantastic writing skills really sucked me deep into his life where I could see everything she went through come to life in front of my eyes and he left me with the emotions that she was going through. My heart went out to both her and her family on many occasions. Throughout it all you can see the strength and love that Tilly and her family have for and with each other and how they are all fighters and when most people would give up after going through just half of what this amazing family went though, they all keep fighting strong as they know they have more fight left in them. I was absolutely mind blown by some of the things that Tilly tells me and it felt like she was sitting across the table from me telling me about her life as a patient over a cup of tea going from laughter to sadness and frustration several times. My jaw literally dropped at the disgusting attitudes that she received from some of the so called Doctors and Nurses who are meant to care for her but instead assumed other things which could have genuinely left to her death!!! The amount of times that they had to ring a call bell and still nobody came which did actually result in a death and the lack of a life saving injection that she is told that she must have on her at all occasions!! This book really does go to show how broke the system is, especially when a certain Doctor wants her on his ward as he is the only one genuinely interested and trying to help but yet the system wont allow him to put her on it so she is yet again shown the doors of the hospital with no answers or help!! Throughout this book Tilly includes some brilliant and very helpful tips and advice for patients, well everyone really because as she said we will all be a patient at some point! The fact that Tilly and her family refused to accept the rubbish some of the so called professionals came out with, continued their own research and has now used this experience to help others is just absolutely amazing. The fact that many people, especially her Mum, who had no medical experiences made more effort to get answers than some of the so called doctors who get paid to do just that really is an eye opener on how broken the system is!! It is an eye opening, honest and amazing read packed with family, experiences, emotions and Tilly's incredible writing skills ensures the reader becomes completely invested as well as educated in everything she writes about. One of the things that I absolutely love about Tilly and her book is that although there is so much tragedy, pain and heartache in her life that she is so full of gratitude and thanks for what she has and her strength, hope and gratitude absolutely shines through the pages. This memoir, although filled with tragedy, pain and heartache, is an amazing read, inspirational and made me smile so many times that I would definitely recommend it to absolutely anyone looking for an educational, motivational or inspirational read regardless of what is happening in their lives.
Clear your schedules, grab the tissues and get ready to take a journey with Tilly through her patient journey!!! You wont regret it and you wont be able to put it down!!
Congratulations Tilly on a beautiful, heart wrenching, honest and, fascinating memoir! You truly are an inspirational woman and I hope to read more books about your life and hopefully soon! The best of luck to yourself and your family!! A remarkable, witty, humorous, emotive memoir!
Overall an open, honest and emotive memoir of life as a patient in many hospitals!
Tilly Rose is an author and a patient advocate. She wrote a powerful story about being patient and a patient.
Be Patient is an eye-opening account of her being a seriously ill patient without a diagnosis. That should be a must-read book for all medical students and doctors. Every year, there are cases with mysterious or unexplained symptoms leading to so-called medical gaslighting – "it's all in your head."
What makes the situation worse is the undefined illness that won't fit in one particular medical specialty. Tilly Rose could be having paroxysms of clammy body and shaking arms. For no reason, her brain could go foggy. One minute her headache was unbearable, the next she would be crying out with weak and wobbly legs. Then she put on extra body fluid enough to fill three gallon jugs. Now that each specialist is often interested in looking at his or her discipline only, Tilly Rose turned out being lost in a barren landscape or no-man's-land.
"I imagine taking a photograph of my whole body and cutting it up into horizontal strips, separating all the different parts of me," Tilly Rose concluded. "The doctor holding the photo of my heads has no idea what my feet look like. I am trapped in a system that relies on putting people in boxes. Bodies aren't made for boxes."
To stop this vicious cycle of losing sight of our patients, here is my simple rule: Piece the photograph back together and learn to read the whole picture. Not a separate box for each strip.
absolutely incredible, and a large part of it I could have written myself verbatim! Tilly is an amazing person and I am also so lucky to have my family support going through a very similar journey
