Ghost Bird I: The Academy Omnibus Part 1: Books One - Four Plus Bonus

Rate this book
Books 1 – 4 in the wildly successful (and swoon-inducing) Academy Ghost Bird Series, together for the first time at a low price. This bundle includes an exclusive that fans have been begging for: Meeting Sang, an alternate POV story of how it all began.

Introductions–Book 1
With an agoraphobic mother and a barely-there father, Sang Sorenson abhors the isolation keeping her in the shadows. What she craves is a fresh start and to be accepted as ordinary, because for her, being different meant being cast out alone.
When her family moves to a new school district, Sang infiltrates a group of boys, each nearly perfect in every way. Grateful for an influence outside of her parents’ negativity, she quickly bonds with the boys, hoping to blend in and learn from them what it means to have friends.
Only the boys have secrets of their own and they’ll do anything to keep her safe from the knowledge of the mysterious Academy they've sworn allegiance to. Bit by bit, Sang discovers her friends are far from what she’d expected. Will her loyalty change when she's forced to remain in the dark, or will she accept that she's traded one house of secrets for another?
Meet Kota, Victor, Silas, Nathan, Gabriel, Luke and North in a story about differences and loyalty, truth and mystery, friendships and heart-throbbing intimacy.
The Academy, ever vigilant.

First Days–Book 2
As a new student to Ashley Waters High School, Sang Sorenson hopes her new friends will be the change she’s been craving and will make fitting in a breeze.
But Academy students aren’t there to take it easy at the overcrowded school rife with violence. When fights begin, Sang will uncover the true reason the boys traded in their private school lives for public ones. This year, Sang will no longer be invisible. This year, Sang is a target.
The principal and vice principal are hot to take Sang down, and her own mother is determined to entrap Sang forever in her belief that the safest place to be is in the shadows. Despite this, Nathan, Luke, Kota, North, Silas, Victor, and Gabriel will discover Sang’s unyielding loyalty. And they will sorely need it.
The Academy, supremely influential.

Friends vs. Family–Book 3
Sang Sorenson is forced to suffer through another of her mother’s extreme punishments that almost kills her. The Academy boys vow it will be the last. They're determined to keep Sang safe, especially from her own family. Their solution: complete infiltration into her life.
Kota, Luke, Silas, Nathan, Victor, Gabriel and North do everything within their power to show Sang what true loyalty means. It takes more than blood to make a family and they want Sang in theirs. Sang experiences a taste of freedom and what it’s like to truly be cared for, wanted. Sang learns a bit more about the boys’ broken families and they discover more than they ever imagined about Sang’s. The Academy was the answer to their problems. Could it be hers?
Sang’s actions force her mother to reveal a startling truth that will change Sang’s and the boys’ lives in unpredictable ways. Forever.
The Academy, Allegiance

Forgiveness and Permission–Book 4
Sang Sorenson’s abusive mother is secure in a hospital and her father has vanished to a new family of his own, leaving Sang and her sister to fend for themselves.
But Sang is never really alone. The Academy team has stepped in, promising to protect and care for her. Kota, Victor, Silas, Nathan, Gabriel, Luke and North take over, showing Sang they can be depended on for anything. But just because her parents are away, doesn’t mean Sang’s life has become any easier.

Oh jeez, where to begin.

First of all I feel this intense need to say that the book(s) aren't very good. As in the plot is unbelievable, the characters are even more unbelievable, and the heroine is a definite Work In Process. The relationships make me want to laugh and kind of hide at the same time, and basically the entire thing felt like wish fulfillment of the worst kind.

That said, I kind of... enjoyed it... Kind of. Definite, definite guilty pleasure sort of thing, the sort where you probably would never admit it because that's just embarrassing. Not to mention the problematic behaviors in the book that you probably don't want to admit to kind of enjoying. But only in books because in real life that would be Wrong. Ahahaha. It's clearly made for people to enjoy without thinking too deeply about it because it'll probably set off alarms all over the place. Well, I never said I had the greatest taste in books sometimes.

The worst book in the omnibus is certainly the first one, which just reads as one extended introduction to a bunch of boys that kind of swarm in and take over the main character's life. Sang is this passive sort of creature that is abused by her mother, but is the sort of character who keeps a stiff upper lip about it. She's. Eh. Wish fulfillment, as I've said. Pretty much these seven boys (plus two other men) invade her life and become friends with her, start taking care of her, and are general super protective and clearly they all kind of fall in love with her.

In case you're wondering, yes, all of them.

They all go to this public school which is apparently terrible and also run by a few terrible people. The boys, however, are only there for a year as they belong to this elite private school known as the Academy and are at the public school on loan, as a sort of example to the students of what model students look like (...it doesn't make that much sense). If you think the Academy is a regular private school then you're sorely mistaken. Think more along the lines of spies who work on a system of favors. In any case, that's not as important as all of their apparent need to take care of Sang and to include her into their little group.

And yes, Sang is the type who is utterly flabbergasted that people want to care for her and notice her and think that she's pretty because she never thought of herself that way before. And yes, she is the type who gets steam rolled over at almost every opportunity except when the author wants to show that she too can be 'strong'. Except not really. Like I said, a Work In Progress. Sang does get a little better later on in the books, but she's kind of like a limp noodle still.

The plot is very, very slowly unfolding out over the course of the omnibus. As I said, the first book reads as a complete introduction, and that kind of set the tone and pace. The books mostly focus on Sang's relationship with the boys more than anything else, with the backdrop of the public school fiasco and creepy school administrators. Buuut if you're reading these books it's really all about the boys anyway.

It's a bit difficult at first to keep all of them straight in one's head, but you get the hang of it after a while. They're fairly different, but all of them feel this intense need to protect Sang and keep her safe within the group. Don't really expect anything different.

The books aren't the best. Flat out. But I still found myself reading all the way through them and kind of enjoying what was going on. They are entertaining, I can say that. But the relationships are worrisome (Sang is constantly monitored, definitely unequal relationships, so on) and the plot is rather lacking. 2 stars.

I read book 1. Wasn’t thrilled with it but it was fast and easy reading and entertaining. I progressed to book 2 because I wanted to see justice on the parental abuse and it intrigued me to see where the author would go with the 1 (hot but naive) girl and 9 (hot and hotter) guys theme. Romance isn’t my genre but fantasy is. I really kept expecting to find the boys were part of some vampire academy or something. Vampires aren’t my thing either but this really had a superficial quality to it. I gave up on the whole supernatural idea that might have given this series some sort of excuse for the crappy writing.

This is labeled as YA romance?? No way would I suggest to my impressionable teenage daughter to read this or insinuate that it is just fine to date seven different boys at the same time and prance around school as such. Give me a freaking break!

The first 2 books, the guys seemed to protect her as the broken girl she was and gather around her as big brothers and protectors. They constantly imply she is in danger and micromanage her every movement. Book 3 and 4 progresses to a point that all hold hands, take turns sleeping with her (in a nonsexual way) and holding her on their laps, etc. She has different habits with each guy. For example, she and one guy suck on each other’s fingers and she has participates in the acts in front of the other guys with no idea that this might cause issues. But hey – the boys are a team (family first) and share everything. All 9 guys are in love with her and she loves all 9. I just now had to go back and look up the protagonist’s name (Sang btw). FOUR books and they were so unmemorable that I actually had to look it up. Sang had no character or depth. I wanted to see just a little bit. Is that too hard to ask for? I remember the guys names. They weren’t written that well but they had some personality at least. Sang might have developed some personality (other than her plaything role) in later books but I won’t be taking the time to find out.

There are 12 books as I understand it. I read the first 2 in hopes of discovering the secret of this academy. I was less thrilled with books 3 and 4 as the sexual tension grew among the group. I swear there was some sort of story in the middle of all this but it got more and more lost as the books progressed.

I completely fell head over heels in love with this series from the very first chapter of the first book.

It's interesting I knew nothing about this series going in I had never heard of it, the author, or anything. So how did I stumble upon this series? I actually learned about it through a fanfiction story on Wattpad I had stumbled across and fell in love with. I'm so glad I decided to read this to see what inspired that author. Now on to these amazing books.

I went through so many emotions read these books. Happiness, hope, extreme I want to jump in this book and murder your butt anger, I could hug you and not let go while we both cry sadness, I'm going to hit you upside the head cause your an idiot feelings, and finally just sarcasm for days.

While I love Sang deeply there were so many times reading these books where I wished I could jump in and reply to things for her. Good lord did some of this dialogue bring out my sarcasm. In fact at one point I was looking at my nook just shaking my head (and maybe it) going "Come on Sang! No, no don't get all shy just look at them and give them a sarcastic response to their teasing" Sadly she never did but it didn't make me love the book any less.

Now on to a little bit about the guys. I absolutely love all the guys for different reasons.

North: I love how strong and silent he is though he isn't afraid to speak his mind. (Am I the only one that pictured him in the military?)

Luke: He's the comedian of the group and I found him very enjoyable though sometimes I was glad I wasn't at the brunt of his pranks *shivers* I also felt at times he didn't take things serious enough. Yet in every serious situation there needs to be non-serious moments which I felt where his job.

Nathan: I kinda felt out of all the guys Nathan was like the most ordinary? Except for his home problems which were kind of like what Sang was dealing with he was pretty normal.

Kota: He's smart, cute, and devious. While he's leader of the group and the first one to meet Sang and introduce her to the rest I kind of feel like he let's himself get put into the background? I'm not sure if that really makes sense but I just feel like he was almost in the background watching everyone else develop a relationship with her.

Victor: The rich one in the group and very talented with a piano. He is the complete opposite of what rich people are usually portrayed as. He isn't stuck up or snobby in fact he is such a sweet heart. Sorry Sang but I have to admit I so wanted to kidnap Victor. While he does use a lot of money and isn't afraid of using his name to his advantage it's not in abuse or anything except to help or provide for his team/family.

Gabriel: Here's another one I wouldn't mind kidnapping. He's also a sweetheart though he does have a temper and a cussing problem. If you can over look those. He loves shopping, knows a lot about make up and hair, he's an amazing artist, and if it wasn't for his feelings for Sang people think he's gay. Can I just say that he could dress me up any day? lol

Silas: Strong and silent. He's a lot like North but slightly more approachable. I will say that I really wasn't crazy for him in the first couple of books but fell in love with him later on. He like others has a messed up home life and that's some of what brings him closer to the others.

Dr. Sean Green: Okay I absolutely loveddddddd Sean like Luke I felt he was mostly there for comedic relief but good lord I wanted more of him! I couldn't get enough and was always wondering when he would show up next. I will say sometimes I wondered who let him be a doctor though. He's one of the oldest in the group but most of the time he doesn't feel that way. He's sweet, hilarious, and sees/understands more than most think.

Mr. Owen Blackbourne: The oldest one of the group and one of the ones to start the group. He's very commanding but listens to everyone's problems and concerns. While he's one of the group leaders I feel like Kota he kind of falls into the background and like Sean I found myself wanting him to show up and interact with Sang more. I also found myself wanting to jump in the book and tell him to chill out which I don't think he would have appreciated lol.

All of these unique characters plus the gazillion of side character and everything they go through make these book very enjoyable. This book is supposed to be YA but unless they mentioned ages or they were in high school doing high school stuff I really didn't feel or think about it. Most of the time they seemed wayyy older than teenagers partly I think because of Sean and Owen and the teams mission. Also if you're anything like me? I read this set of books and then immediately got all the other books that are currently out and read them too. I'm officially addicted to this series. I also need to check out her other works.

Please for the love of all your favorite book characters give this series a chance.

Only reason....

...I bought this book is to support the author and her awesomeness. I already own the books, but felt buying the bundle would motivate her to release House of Korba earlier. ***hint hint nudge nudge*** But, yes these books are freaking epic and deserve five stars.

Love it

I love this series so much! Ive read it about 4 times already and starting on the 5th time. The plot is original and interesting and i love the mystery of what will happen next. The boys are so awesome with their many different and yet complementary personalities. And Sang is so shy and yet strong. Im rooting for this series to continue!

Okay so I need to give a disclaimer as to why I even had these books to begin with: they had been free at some point on amazon for kindle. I had at some point gone and downloaded basically every free book that looked at least mildly interesting.
I'm a bit embarrassed that I've read these books so I'm only going to count this as one book in my yearly count even though it was technically 4.
These books are not incredibly well written, but the writing style is inviting and easy to read. The author writes like she's verbally telling you a story, meaning it's not a polished narrative and reads "young." Though I would not agree that these are young adult books. Young adult style? yes. Young adult appropriate material? no.
First off, Sang Sorenson is a difficult character for me. I found her both unrealistic and realistic at the same time. She is an abused child without any positive attachments or bonds to anyone. She is anxious and her mannerisms reflect this. So does her attachment to the boys in the book. It is "on brand" for a traumatized girl to either have intense and inappropriate attachments (Sang) or none at all even when given the chance. I don't like her attachments to 9 (NINE!!!!) guys. It is not healthy in any way shape or form. But I understand the attachments.
Second, the boys were hard to keep track of for a bit, but I got used to them. At first they all blend in to the same personality but as the series goes on they develop, as to be expected with any characters but especially with NINE of them.
The plot is very slow and repetitive, but it served as an easy, relaxing, and weirdly addicting read while I hung out with my newborn baby. It's not realistic, but if I wanted realism I'd read nonfiction.
While it is technically a "reverse harem" series (a term I didn't know existed until I saw it in a review for this book), there is no sexual content (the characters are 15 and 16) and very little actual romantic content. Sang rather openly dates 7 classmates in her high school which would not fly in real schools. I guess you could reason that there's enough problems in the school that a girl quietly dating 7 other students wouldn't be on many radars.
I'll continue to read this series as well as the companion series Scarab Beetle. I'm not proud of that fact but hey 2021 is the year of simple pleasures and zero judgement.

I entered this book with no real expectations, the series was quite highly reviewed and a friend said that I would like them.

The main character is Sang. She is a fifteen-year-old girl that is being abused by her mother. She lives in an uncaring family and has spent most of her life isolated from everyone. Her mother warns her about the dangers of the world and is very protective, this means that Sang has no friends. We meet her shortly after she has moved to a new neighbourhood and she bumps into a young guy (Kota) one night whilst she is running away and he is walking his dog. Kota introduces her into his group of friends and she soon becomes absorbed into their lives and The Academy lifestyle that this brings. Over the course of the first 4 books, we follow Sang and the group as they navigate various dangers both at school and personally.

These books are super easy to read. I felt that the character definitions are strong and individual, although it did take me a while to remember who was who but the stories flow well. Sang annoys the hell out of me with her weakness and strength in equal measure and her real naive way of life but these books are just a bit of fun. I understand that none of the characters ever progress further than kissing, so this is a younger audience version of The Academy series but still enjoyable.

Having read The Academy series first, I am appreciating the cross over between the characters and storylines from the 2 series. This has been done very well and feels like we get to see more of the characters lives.

These books all follow the same formula and are very similar but I will continue with the series as they are easy to read and I am enjoying seeing how the characters relationships develop.

An Absolute GEM of a series!!!!!

Okay, I read a LOT. So, I tend to be a bit skeptical at a free book by an author I am not familiar with.
Having said that, this series is skool GOOD, I couldn't put it down. It has everything I look for in a story. Best plot so far, ever !! And as I have said I read everything I can because, 1 I love to get lost in a good book and 2 I have nothing but time since I retired.
I am also delighted that there are more to this very well written, creative series. I don't know what's gonna happen from 1 chapter to the next t, most of the time. I love the integrated way this authors weaves the characters story to flow into a can't wait to see where they came from and how each person relates to each of the others. There is some very interesting and poignant moments as well a a lot of "whoa, where did THAT come from heart stoppers. This series is guaranteed to have you turning pages/flipping your finger well into the night (or for some of day if that's when you declassified dropping off to dreamland)
Can I just say, in my humble opinion, this book is a must read for those who love a great story with humor, drama, a lot of a tion, a helpless yet capable heroine and some sweet, sexy, protective to the max, young hero's and some really smart but nasty bad guys and gals. Oh yeah, let's not forget some parents whom definitely should have taken a really good parenting class and maybe gotten some medical help (lithium anyone) along the way.

What the actual fuck did I read? Annoying satisfying, but I can tell already I'm gonna get impatient for anyone to make a move. What's with the head chopping?? Wtf is with all the marriage proposals and male blushing??? Soooo odd. But I’m thinking Kota, Victor, and North are the only guys we need. Who are the other ones? Idk. Gabriel, are we sure he’s into chicks? I’m annoyed as fuck because I heard there’s 12?? books before one of them even kiss her? Slowww 🔥.

Why does she let her mother abuse her??? Battered daughter syndrome, is that a thing? Annoyingly hooked on this series that I put off reading for years. You know, I put off this series because there were so many of them, and I knew it'd be expensive. (I was also terrified the writing would be juvenile and terrible.) But then, she released the omnibus for book 1-4, and then 5-8 (which I just purchased), so I said sure, I'll read it. But then I see she hasn't relased the omnibus for the rest of the books, soooo I guess I'll be forced to buy all of them individually. I hate long ass series like this.

On the dudes. I was originally all for Victor, Kota, and North. But now, I'll still with North, but have dropped the other two and added Mr. Blackbourne. That's hot.

The ending. That's hot, too. Let's get on with it. This series moves too fucking slow, that's why I can't rate it higher.

This series has sucked me in. I just finshed this omnibus part and have downloaded the second omnibus part 2.

The characters are so well written. Sang is such a lovely young lady and the guys although at times over bearing as so good to her.
Sang has been through a lot and still has lots to learn but you are rooting for her. She has been abandonded on many senses and the guys are her only stability. But the guys belong to this group that is helps people but Sang is not sure what it's all about and why they are keeping secrets.

A very interesting premise for a book series and I am looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

One right after the other!

I’ve heard about Ghost Bird for quite awhile now, but never dipped my toes in - yet somehow this omnibus was on my kindle, so I finally caved and gave it a shot. YA isn’t normally my first choice, but I’m glad I went out of my wheelhouse. It’s smooth, a bit emotional and rather mysterious. The characters are 15-19, but none of them act like it, which is kinda jarring, but still works fairly well. Honestly, it reminded me of the veil diaries, minus the supernatural aspect, but it was an echo only, a feeling of familiarity. I’ll continue on with the next omnibus - maybe I’ll finally learn what the academy really is!!

Interesting concept in high school espionage

Interesting twists in story line.
However not sure I would rate this for young adults (as in middle to high school age) because of the almost, but not sure sexual titillation between a young girl and seven or eight dominant young men. Several near rapes, moderate drug and alcohol use makes me believe that this saga was intended more for the twenty-ish adult who enjoys a bit of mental sexual titillation.

I have gotten very into reading Reverse Harem novels lately because of this series. It's super hard to find decent ones that don't just read like fan fiction and this series is quite good actually. This series is really good though, it is slow to develop but that allows for more books in the series which is a good thing. Both the characters and the story are fully fleshed out and well written. I'm enjoying becoming invested in this world and pleased that I discovered this author.

Umm ok maybe maybe not

I'm confused by my feelings because it is a good set up and I wanted to like the characters since that was what enticed me, but now I'm unsure. I think between the girl not evolving in her innocent nature and the plot dragging its hard for me. I'm seriously on the fence. I keep reading hoping to see something because this serious has so much potential.

Questions

Everything you know about yourself is a lie, but you wouldn't know that because your normal is the equivalent of someone else's nightmares.
Trust is the only way out, but whom do you trust when you are surrounded by lies.
Good book, academy "school" sounds like an interesting experience using bartering favors as a manor of earning your livelihood.

Surprisingly good!

This story surprised me because I didn’t expect to enjoy it so much. It really pulled me in! Great writing and storyline. But. I just found out there is currently 12 books in this series, and planning to be 20. That’s too drawn out for me, so I’m done with this series.

Amazing

This is one of the best series by far. I have read the every book so far and can't wait for the next. When I want a series to read I came back to this one multiple times because it's hard not to fall in love with every character and the story to find out what they all go through and if they will make it as a team and family.

Absolutely loved

I am really loving this series. I usually read things that are a faster burn series but find I am really enjoying the slow burn and getting to know each of the characters. Sang is still a little timid but enjoying her finding her voice. Also each of the boys are different and perfect for her. Hoping to learn more about Dr. Green too. Loving this series.

I love this series even go into different genres I always look to see if the next book is up on Audible as that's where I read this series... It is a shorter listen but it deals with mature themes and is not exactly light-hearted in some aspects.

This book is terrible. It’s like some twisted Snow White and her seven dwarves retelling where she has all the men. Don’t know why any of these guys are interested in the girl because she is so bland. Terrible book
