Tsukuji, Akihito (つくし あきひと) is a Japanese mangaka. He has works in Fairy Musketeers (TV) as a character designer, and is the original creator of Made in Abyss, a fantasy and adventure manga.
Riko and Reg plunge into the Abyss on their quest to find Riko's mother. When they run into Ozen, a white whistle who knew her mother, things take a dark turn...
Here we are, the second volume of Made in Abyss. Riko and Reg descend into the Abyss, trek the Inverted Forest, and meet Orzen, a white whistle who has some dark secrets. I really enjoy the world Akihito Tsukushi has created. Like I said in my review of the first volume, it makes me want to play some Dungeons and Dragons set in Orth and the Abyss. The artwork continues to astound, cutesy yet intricate. I find myself getting attached to the main characters quite a bit.
However, the second volume of Made in Abyss didn't blow my doors off the way the first one did. Some of the newness has worn off. There's some unsettling moments, like Riko shirtless, Riko wetting the bed, and Marulk being stripped and whipped. Maybe it's a cultural thing but it's a little uncomfortable.
All that being said, I'm still hooked enough to continue the series. Let's hope the weird pedo tone gets dialed way back in the next volume and doesn't detract from the interesting story. Three out of five stars.
I like the story but some elements make me pretty uncomfortable. That whole “traditional punishment” thing being number one on the list. It just skeeves me out!
I can’t keep reading this. Again, like the first manga, the art is fantastic. I love the kind of penciled in look, the attention to detail, the fantastic backgrounds, the imaginative creatures. I love the sense of mystery and the deep and crazy abyss with it’s craziness and wild worlds within worlds. I really like he characters, the robot kid, the spunky Riko.
But wholly crapolly this manga feels like child porn. I’m embarrassed to have it on my Kindle app. The first volume had a girl trussed up naked as punishment, but the art wasn’t very detailed... it still creeped me out something fierce. This one takes the creep factor up several notches, with carefully detailed budding breasts from prepubescent girls appearing multiple times, sometimes in large panels. It feels like just about every opportunity the artist can think of to get the little girls naked, he takes. Oops, they vomited. Take off their shirt. Ooh, shower scene. Have her walk out without putting on her clothes. Oh, that trussed up naked thing? Yeah, that’s a “traditional” punishment, so everybody does it, and we gosh frick gotta show it administered to another girl character who is way, way, way under age.
I would not want to see this garbage even if they were sexually mature 25 year old characters. It would be insulting and base and lurid and too much even then. This way, it’s not insulting—it’s just super, super sick.
Plus the also very, very creepy image of an adult man checking on the genitals of the boy “robot” character. What the honest hades?! Who writes this kind of thing? Who enjoys this kind of thing?
This is some sick stuff, and it breaks my heart because otherwise I would be singing the praises of this manga and eagerly awaiting each new release. Instead, I find myself doing just the opposite. Avoid! Avoid!!
I decided the other night it was time to go to my manga shelf and pull some volumes to read or some whole new series to start! Currently, I am at different stages of reading, Made in Abyss, Ancient Magus Bride, Komi Can't Communicate, and Dreamin Sun! That is quite a few mangas but I know that some of these are already finished (Dreamin Sun and Made in Abyss) so these have a definite end point for me right now. For example, Made in Abyss only has eight volumes (I picked them all up slowly before starting my read of the series), so now I can kind of progress through the series at my own pace! I like having multiple manga series ongoing in my currently reading because it gives me tons of options to pick from for whatever kind of mood I am in when I want to read! I have some other mangas on my shelf that I have not yet started (My Brother's Husband, Cells At Work, Orange, and a few others!). I am also always open to suggestions of other great manga to read and always looking for more. But the other night one of the books I picked up for my manga stack was Made in Abyss volume two and let me say now I literally want to go back to my shelf and grab volume three and not stop reading!
SPOILERS AHEAD
Reg and Riko are continuing their descent to the bottom to find Riko's mom. However, they quickly learn that people from the top are on the way to find them and bring them back but they know they will not search for them past a certain point in the Abyss. So the pair start working on getting past the level as fast as possible. However, before they are able to do so a familiar face from the service catches them but this person does not want to bring them topside, rather they want to help Riko and Reg on their mission and warn them about the camp they are headed to. After this encounter Riko and Reg continue on their journey and make it to the camp where they meet the exact person they were warned about, Ozen the Immoveable. Ozen, may know a lot about Riko's mother as Ozen found the whistle and helped to carry Riko to the surface when she was born! Riko plans to stay a night or two and ask a ton of questions, learning as much as she can, however, this is definitely not what happens and Riko and Reg's time at the camp is vastly different than anyone could have imagined.
I want to start by saying, this volume hooked me like no other and I already have this weird love hate thing with Ozen the Immovable. Like I wanted to run and pick up volume three while also turning on the television to watch the anime (which I was trying to hold off on doing until I finished the books). Despite, loving this series so much I do want to say there is one element that seems to be continuing (from the first volume into this one) that makes me super uncomfortable, I am not going to go into detail but it really bothers me (the traditional punishment thing). I do not know if this aspect will go away as the series goes on but it does make me feel deeply uncomfortable. Despite that aspect, the story was stellar in this volume and I was hooked from start to finish. I can not wait to share what volume three brings with you all, so stay tuned.
This was better than the first volume, but I'm still not that invested in the story/characters. While I detest Ozen, I'm glad she's the only adult who made it clear "hey, you kids are FUCKING IDIOTS, you're going to DIE, I'll train you but DAMN you're so stupid". The artwork was still incredible and the Corpse Weepers are fucking TERRIFYING yet beautiful, kind of like the abyss in a way.
I wanted to like this whole series a lot more, however I started to notice..things. Those things being the blatant sexualization of Riko, who is 10. Tsukushi just "lovingly" likes to render all the children in this manga, naked. It's gross. I saw another shot of future character that is around 10, naked, playing with her breasts.
This manga is just child porn. Really Seven Seas should be brought to trial over this as it's so gross.
Yeah, I’m done. The story and art are great, but the author’s utterly creepy insistence on sexualizing middle schoolers makes it impossible for me to keep reading. This is why I don’t normally read Manga...
Story-wise it's interesting. The world building is super cool. The characters have a lot of room for growth and depth. The art is awesome. I really like the unique page layout of this manga. However… I'm with the guy who was like "I'd recommend this to people if it weren't for the weirdo stuffO_o"
There's a lot goin on that makes one uncomfy i tell ya what. I dont like gore or sexualizing children (as I hope most people don't!) so yknow. And it's not even like "oh so pretty, so innocent" it's like REAL freak stuff. When people see shows and theyre like "wow it's an episode based off of the creator's thinly-concealed fetishes. Great:/" This series is like that but it's BLATANT, and it's not pleasant to witness. Second volume really upped the freaky, and I fear it will get worse.
Gonna keep reading because I've watched the anime with my friend and like the story, but just know I'm shaking my head in disapproval the whole time. Smhhh
В ній є позитивні моменти, звісно, раз після першого тому я взялась за другий, але ні, not my cup of tea.
The journey continues, we encounter some new characters, and it seems that perhaps I'm getting a taste of some of the twistedness that's to be expected, but this one concluded in a way that keeps me "hopeful" and interested in seeing what's to come for Riko and Reg.
The story gets darker and more captivating as Riko and Reg descend into the abyss, the artwork and world-building are still strong and vibrant. Unfortunately, there are some problematic elements that I hope not to make an appearance in future volumes.
Riko and Reg met a member of the five legendary white whistle delver, Ozen "The Immovable". She is so weird but strong. She helped Riko and Reg so much because she is Riko's mother's friend.
