Took me a long time to read this cause my earphones broke right before the new year... I loved this book, gave me everything I would want as a beginning of a fantasy series, can't wait to pick up the next one!
I read this book a few years back and didn't realize the second in the series was released. Since time had passed I decided to give this a second read to refresh myself on the details before picking up book two.
In short this novel is everything I remembered and more. It is well done with a small but also great world. The magic is not extraordinarily unique or complex, but the way the characters develop to use it is. The story is a fulfilling of a prophecy, but one which we are not fully told about. When a new magic enters the plot with the ability to effect or carry out the prophecy everything has the ability to change. It is this not knowing what will happen, even in a book based on something which we are told is going to happen that makes this story so interesting.
The story starts off slow, but that is something I expect with an epic fantasy. Something about this book being written in German and then converted to English gives it a different feel. It reminds me of old fantasy novels, but with a modern twist. It is hard to place my finger on exactly what it is; something to do with sentence structure, tone, word choice, and pacing. All I can say for sure is I enjoy it, and find it a nice change from modern fantasy.
The characters here are so well done. I can understand how they could come across unfinished by some, but for me it is the opposite. They are quite simple on the surface, but complex at the same time. Through their actions and their reactions to certain situations it is quite easy to understand them and their motives. They start by only reacting to situations and others, but that quickly turns into action and this is when the book really shines. This happens in sync with the plot picking up momentum, and before you know it the book has swept you up and you are being drawn along for the ride.
I can't wait to continue the series, and I fully expect book two to be as good as book one.
REALLY? I've found number of things wrong with this book that I can't list them all. Nill is quick to learn things when he was in the village but becomes thickheaded at school, huh. He keeps whining that no one will teach him magic. He picks fights but doesn't learn defence techniques. He then defeats people with more magic then him but the writer doesn't tell us how Nill learned to do that. All the lesson includes the teacher asking them to do things without instucting tem on how. I found this book foolish at best.
This one took me a while as I had to take breaks from it twice. The early portion of the book is difficult to follow as Awert doesn't do a very good job of world building and he immediatly starts switching between multiple POV's and multiple world(?) (I still don't know, he does a VERY poor job of world building). Frustrated by if all I took a 1 book break.
Coming back and all three have arrive at Ring Wall (I kept thinking 'Redwall') aaaand it's Hogwarts... -_- Nill is Harry, Brolock (Sounds like something the members of an Goth Frat would call each other.) is Ron, and Tawiwi (what a name) is Hermione. They even have a Hagrid style giant friend for Nill, only he's the cook here instead of the games keeper. As Nill starts to make his Marauders Map I take another break.
50% in, now, the book FINALLY starts to click. I'm spotting some influence from The Name of the Wind as well now, but not as blatant as the Harry Potter stuff. The best parts of the book (and the reason it's not a 1 star) are from about the 50% mark to ~90%. Awert misses the natural ending for the book, though, and speeds through a lot of extra stuff that should have been saved for future parts of the series. This last 5 to 10% of the book is rushed and clunky as a result and it's too bad, I'd considered giving it a 3 star before that. :/
This book is good, execution is tight and the author keeps the plot interesting enough to finish. It is relief that the author does not prioritize romance b/c often that narrows down plot choices for young characters. I am surprised that this was a translated novel. I usually avoid translated novels b/c there is usually something off about them whether it be odd phrasing or thought processes.
With the overview done, the book is a coming of age book. The main character Nil, is stubborn hillbilly with unknown magic. He isn't some forgotten handsome prince who all the girls swoon over, he is crass, dirty, weak and his manners are non existent. His adventures in the magic academy full of nobles and mages is interesting and funny at the same time b/c he just does whatever he wants and while people try to put him in his place, ultimately he really just doesn't care. Petty bullying? shrugs. Assassination attempts? That was last Tuesday lol
The magic system so far isn't exceptional, but at the same time the first book is still detailing how magic works and I assume it will be an ongoing project. Can't wait for the next translation!
I gave this book 5 stars for its depth and variety in magic systems. I recommend this book for tweens and teens although adult Harry Potter fantasy lovers will get a kick outta this book. So, do not be afraid to add Reign of Magic to the summer reading list. The translation was a little rough in the beginning, but it did not hamper the tale. I look forward to reading the next book in this series.
Young child destined for greatness trope is strong in this one. However, it isn't so on the nose about it. World is interesting, the support cast were great. The public villain is a bit too ... mustache-twirly for my taste, the secret villain less so. Overall, entertaining and looking forward to reading the second book.
DNF at 34%. Unfortunately this didn’t keep my attention. Not much happened so far, the magic school doesn’t seem to make much sense and the MMC was acting rather stupid for most of the time. I was not enjoying this and I doubt I would change my mind going any further.
now i am hooked. This was such a great, easy and creative book. i was hooked after the first page.
The characters were easy to fall in love with and follow, along with the story. the author made the mental visions so easy and vivid of the surroundings and the characters actions felt so real.
i would highly recommend this author and this book.
