3.7 stars. The ending is a bit uneventful in the end, although it's nice to know the heroine Izumiko finally finds her own footing in her (rather stressful and scary) new situation and is planning to continue her study, looking forward for a better future instead of her being constantly scared of herself and other people.
I like Izumiko for her kind and compassionate nature, even when her withdrawn personality can be annoying at them. Plus, I'm fed up by the stereotypes about boys being allowed to use their power freely whilst girl's own power must remains hidden. In this sense I appreciate the main supporting female character (Izumiko's roommate) for being outgoing and not afraid to use her power to serve her own ends.
I heard a few friends talking about the anime of this series and its ending being 'weird'; but judging from what I'd seen and what the author Noriko Ogiwara said in her author's note, the first six volumes of this light novel series serve mostly as the 'origin story' of Izumiko and Co. therefore the sixth book ends with Izumiko only. As to the truth about 'the goddess' and the fate of the world, it has yet to be revealed.
PS: I am also not a fan of the anime adaptation, the anime's artwork looks too typical and too bright to a point the mysterious aura in the novel is lost entirely, whilst the artwork of the book's covers is so, so much better.
The first half of the book was pretty good. I like how the author was able to convey how immense MC’s power is while keeping the final competition so simple at the same time. Then the author used Christmas as a pretext to talk about how European and Japanese mythologies are similar in essence in the next 90 pages. After that, MC got into a trouble and became a damsel in distress the gazillionth time again, even though her power is fully awakened by then, and could have easily slipped into sub reality with ML or shut down all electonics. At this point, her repetitive helplessness has become quite irritating. I don’t think even shoujo manga from the 90s is this bad. It’s such a pity that the series ends on a sour note in this way.
