A saga based in the 19th century. The Standish family are poor but the eldest boy, Tommy, desires wealth and position and will do anything in pursuit of his dream regardless of the misery he causes anyone who dares to step in his way. His ambitions realised, a terrible secret from his past threatens his very existence. THE WIDOW MAKERS 1842-1860 Review the Welsh Books Council www.gwales.com Mead's novel is inspiring reading; a classic tale, full of all the ingredients which make the finest novels. My only criticism was that it ended too soon; I felt bereft! A sequel please. THE WIDOW MAKERS; STRIFE 1860-1874 Review Historical Novel Society The author is a wonderful storyteller who uses authentic well-written language. A page turner. The story stays with you after the book is finished. The Widow-maker Roads End
This book is based in the mid-19th century. The story is of the Standish family, who move from the coalfields of Lancashire to the slate quarries of North Wales.
The main character Tommy Standish wants wealth and believes it is his right to have everything he desires, any way he can manage, even though he was born into poverty. This book is full of intrigue , suspense, fear, love, and misery. This is the third book in this trilogy. The characters are memorable, and even if you have read the other two book a while a go, you immediately know who they are and what they do. It is exciting to see what transpired with the strong characters Jean Mead creates. Such an amazing story.

Read complete series finishing with Tommy. Great reading and Jean Mead is a fabulous author. Loved the Hannah series also. She seems to be on the level of Jean Graingerr another of my favorite authors. Can't wait for more from both of these 5 star rated ladies.
