The seige of Veii has lasted eight long years. years in which the political situation in Rome has grown more hostile and the enemies of Rome have continued to harass their armies. As disaster after disaster befalls Rome they turn to Marcus to destroy the City of Veii and restore glory to their armies. Fighting wars against neighbouring cities Marcus must find a way to defeat the impregnable walls of Veii and bring glory to his name. In this third book of the Dictator of Rome series Marcus fights political and military enemies and finds that success comes at a cost.
Murder, political intrigue, battles and the fall of cities.
The Fall of the Veii part 2 joins Marcus in his most challenging battle to date. The mighty city of Veii has been under siege for eight years with a Roman army camped outside its walls. Where others have failed to breach the walls of Veii Marcus believes it is his destiny to succeed, a destiny foretold in prophecy. But while Marcus is able to vanquish his enemies on the battlefield, there are enemies more insidious working against him in the shadows of Rome.
This book has a lot to keep you entertained: military strategy, battles, political intrigue and history. It has been interesting catching up with Marcus again, seeing how he is developing into a great military leader. While reading this book I cheered Marcus on as his strategies in battle brought victory, and watched with interest as he adapted these strategies to meet the challenge of each new enemy force. I felt angry when Romans plotted against him, frustrated that anyone would seek to be rid of such a strong military commander when the threat of war was always a potential threat. Felt proud of him when he behaved honourably, and resisted the urge to turn away when he showed no mercy. When Marcus grieved I stood silent by his side, and at the end, walked beside him with my head held high but with a heavy heart.
At the end of his books Francis Mulhern leaves us notes, giving us some of the real history of the time and telling of how the stories he weaves fit into that history. I like these additions, feeling that they enhance the stories, grounding them in reality and feeding my curiosity.
