Not all vampires suck.

Daisy Janney—college student, assistant mortician, and supernatural detective—is excited about her friend John Polidori’s new book, Bloody Sexy, the autobiography of his life as a vampire. But when someone attacks Polidori at the book reading, Daisy will have to figure out who’s after him on her own. There’s a killer on the loose, and Nathan Venator, the hero of Baltimore (although he looks more like a young Johnny Cash), has got his hands full tracking him down. If that wasn’t enough, it seems like everyone’s in a relationship except Daisy, even her mom. so when Daisy agrees to go on a date with someone who just might be the killer, she begins to wonder how she’s going to juggle her classes, her investigations, and her social life—all without winding up in the funeral home at which she works.

This book is the second in a series, but can easily be read as a standalone. I haven’t read the first book, and had no trouble following along with this breezy, well-written story. I was quickly smitten with the main character, Daisy, a somewhat goofy college freshman who works as a mortician’s assistant. Although she is human, non-human creatures seem to swirl around her; so does a fair amount of excitement. I enjoyed Daisy’s misadventures and appreciated how well drawn some of the relatively minor characters were. There’s a lot of fun stuff here. I especially liked Lou, the monosyllabic mortician who speaks primarily in grunts that Daisy is a whiz at deciphering.

The only thing that bothered me about this book is that, at one point, it took a rather transphobic turn. I’m genderqueer and am part of the trans community, and found the normally harmless humor of the story offensive, tone deaf, and hurtful in this particular section. Daisy’s fascination with a trans male character’s packing, and the running joke it provided, seemed insensitive to me. I pack sometimes because my true identity is intersex. For me, and certainly for trans men, these are prosthetic devices that attempt to make our bodies as they should be. Making fun of someone for wearing them is similar to making fun of a chemo patient’s wig. It’s just crass and mean. Picking on a vulnerable, marginalized community is cruel. I also want to point out that trans people are at a higher risk of suicide than cisgender (“normal”) people. With some reports estimating that forty percent of transgender people have attempted suicide, I believe that transgender people are far more likely to harm themselves than others.

Eventually, Daisy does evince some sympathy for the trans character’s feeling of being trapped in the wrong body, but this is done in a few lines after maybe ten pages or more of tackiness. I feel bad about saying all of this. I know this is supposed to be a cute, lighthearted book, but it hurt my feelings. I was really enjoying it until this bunch of ignorance punched me in the face. I’m giving this book three stars because I liked in until that point. I also don’t think the author is transphobic. I think the culture is, and that just made its way into the book. I don’t think most cisgender people will be as offended by this as I was. (And that, cisgender people, is called cisgender privilege.)

This is book 2 in a fun series that follows a sarcastic, quick witted college student named Daisy who works in a funeral parlor that is a hub for unusual activity. I love the tone of these books. Lighthearted and humorous with a dark twist. The main character kind of reminds me of Buffy in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I also really enjoy the vampire character and I am glad we got to see him more in this book. I think the idea of a funeral parlor being a sort of central head quarters is a quirky and interesting idea. I could easily see this as a television series I would enjoy watching.

Daisy is back with her next adventure and this time it's vampires. Some good, some bad. I enjoyed this second trip into the world of black humor, paranormal happenings, college challenges, and friends and family issues. The book is well written and fast paced. I normally read primarily romance but this series by CL Bledsoe is great fun.

Bloody Sexy is book two in the Necro Files series. The main character, Daisy, is a part-time mortician assistant and a struggling student. In this book, her detective ability is showcased. Daisy started her Necro Files adventure in book one of the series. I am actually mortified that she did not resign her job, and run, after the hair-raising adventures in book one. She obviously has more courage than some of us!

In book two she finds herself assisting her friend, Nathan Venator aka Hero, to catch a serial killer on the loose, as well as protect her vampire friend. Her bosses are also trusting her enough to let her into some of their secrets. How much more can Daisy take? Can she catch this killer and save her friends?

Just when I thought C.L. Bledsoe's writing couldn't get any better, he comes up with yet another masterpiece! Don't be put off by the title. There are really no graphic scenes in this book. His ability to introduce characters that readers will want to travel with on their individual journeys and adventures is great. The settings are created in such a vivid manner that I could literally visualize the words as I read. I am not usually a fan of urban fantasy, but I found this book suspenseful, humorous and very captivating!
