My Gorilla Family is one of the strangest collections of manga stories that I have ever read.
I’m beyond happy to see niche, vintage manga being preserved and brought back into circulation.
As a younger person who considers themselves a horror/bizarro manga enthusiast— reading this compilation of 1970s off-the-wall stories was like entering some sort of manga time capsule.
This collection is full of raunchiness, bizarre situations, kooky sci-fi elements, B-grade horror, and even a bit of the supernatural.
Just what I like.
It’s also such an interesting way to explore Japan’s history with patriarchal structures and traditional gender roles and norms— as it is so prominent when reading retro manga.
The misogyny and objectification in these stories are jumping off the pages.
But beyond that, mangaka Ichiro has such a creative mind and it’s clearly present in his work. Though going mainstream with particular manga magazines can absolutely indicate future success and further exposure, I’m so glad he stuck to his underbelly magazine roots.
Who knows if we would ever have gotten the chance to read something as wild as this?!

Pierwszy z dwóch zbiorów miniatur Iijimy Ichiro, wydany w serii „Smudge”, będącej inprintem wydawnictwa „Living the Line”. Przyznam, że nie znam wcześniejszych tomów serii, ale „My Gorilla Family” przyciągało już samym opisem i obietnicą prezentacji dziwactw, jakie zawsze mnie fascynują w niszowych wydawnictwach mangowych, szczególnie tych sprzed kilku dekad. Wszystkie shorty publikowane były na początku lat 70. w magazynie „Black Punch”
Czego tu nie ma? Tworzone częściowo w konwencji horroru, częściowo pod mocnym wpływem sci-fi historie zaskakują, a jednocześnie śmieszą naiwnością, prymitywną erotyką, dawką kiczu i prostoty. Mam wrażenie, że w ramach przyjętej konwencji nie ma pomysłu, którego nie dałoby się zrealizować. Oczywiście można szukać mądrzejszego drugiego dna (szczególnie w opowiadaniu „A unique palate”), ale nie ma się co oszukiwać, ta lektura to raczej czysta radość płynąca z odmóżdżającej treści. Jest więc tytułowe opowiadanie mówiące o wyjściu za mąż za goryla, są krwiożercze małże, spotkanie z szatanem i obcymi przypominającymi jednookie ryby, a także kobieta zamrażająca kochanków podczas seksu, która jednak musi uważać, gdyż zbyt duże przyrodzenie partnera może spowodować także jej zamrożenie…
Autor czerpał inspiracje z amerykańskich komiksów, ale poznając je w specyficzny sposób. Nie znając angielskiego, jedynie wyobrażał sobie ich treść na podstawie samych ilustracji, a następnie sam tworzył własne komiksowe światy. Czuć również inspiracje klasycznym kryminałem i filmową serią „Planeta małp”, a całość dowodzi, że to, co w teorii mogłoby budzić najwyżej zażenowanie, w praktyce przekłada się na świetne czytelnicze doświadczenie, jeśli tylko towarzyszy mu minimum dystansu

I love this weird sh*t.
So many great, bizarre stories - a woman filled with spiders, a sexualised tree, a marriage between a woman and a polite, respectful gorilla. There's just so much here to love.
The artwork is fantastic, bringing plenty of strange scenes to life, and the stories are short but pack a heavy punch.
This is a fantastic read for anyone interested in strange Japanese horror stories.

A collection of stories fucked up and hilarious in equal measure. Akin to a glimpse into the mind of a horny uncle with a musty old SF paperback collection and dripping with Fulci-levels of gore, this volume may be the most lurid Smudge release yet. The essay which follows the stories promises a volume two of Ijima's work is to come. Sign me up! I've rarely cackled so much reading horror manga.

it’s actually rare that i get a bit shocked with horror stuff but this was such a ride i had a hard time putting it down. it has a really strong sexual and misogynistic component that feels almost dumb and childish but not in a horrible way (although sometimes it gets a bit tiring that it all boils down to NAKED WOMAN YES SEX SEX VERY NICE)

Tramas fantásticas y variadas: Una mujer llena de arañas, una sociedad donde los gorilas son considerados iguales a los humanos y visten traje, un árbol con forma de himen que da bebés como frutos de sus ramas, un cientifico que separa el alma de su cuerpo para comter crímenes espantosos...

Kudos to Living the Line for publishing obscure horror manga from the 70s in English with their releases under the Smudge line. I did not particularly enjoy Iijima's work collected in this volume. It's a product of its time. The essay's great as it provides essential context.
