Henry Canova Vollam (H.V.) Morton, FRSL, was a journalist and pioneering travel writer from Lancashire, England, best known for his prolific and popular books on Britain and the Holy Land. He first achieved fame in 1923 when, while working for the Daily Express, he scooped the official Times correspondent during the coverage of the opening of the Tomb of Tutankhamon by Howard Carter in Egypt.
In the late 1940s he moved to South Africa, settling near Cape Town in Somerset West and became a South African citizen.
I never get tired of H.V.Morton and his travels. In Scotland Again dovetails perfectly with his first book on Scotland. More wonderful insights into the personality of Scotland and her people.
i picked up this leather-bound, yellow-paged book in a dusty corner of a secondhand antique bookshop somewhere on the remote shetland islands. i just had to glance at the first few lines of the introduction, and the map of scotland glued to the inside of the cover, to know this was going to be a perfect read. it's 400 odd pages written in an incredibly detailed and old-fashioned style (mostly endearing; except for the way he talks about women lol), describing lots of lovely spots in scotland and the legends they hold, as told to the author by locals he encountered. i loved this slow-paced read, parts of which traced the exact journey i am currently on! also, i absolutely feel the sheer amount of love the author holds for this country, same bro
"if you would see a country, you must look for the good things and the kind things; and they will come to you. how easy is this search in scotland."
