Haven Thriller #2

Mist and Malice

Rate this book
A small-town PI is drawn into a killer conspiracy in a breathtaking novel of suspense by the New York Times bestselling author of the Anthony Award–nominated These Toxic Things.

Private investigator Sonny Rush, the newest resident of Haven, California, knows that this fogbound coastal hamlet is every bit as dangerous as her hometown of Los Angeles. And when teenager and repeat runaway Honor Butler shows up at Sonny’s door with terror in her eyes, Sonny is immediately pulled into a new case that lands close to home.

Desperate, hungry, and in need of someone she can trust, Honor tells Sonny a horrifying story about where she’s been—and what she’s been forced to do. Then, hours later, the forest near Sonny’s cottage yields the remains of a missing day laborer, a man whose wife has been searching for answers for months. Soon, coincidence sharpens into conspiracy.

As Sonny digs deeper, the threads of these cases twist together into something a ruthless network preying on the vulnerable, protected by the very people meant to uphold the law. With every step closer to revealing Haven’s corruption, Sonny risks pulling the lives of her loved ones into the cross fire—and exposing the shadows of her own past. Because in this town, loyalty can be fatal, and survival means deciding who you’re willing to betray.

I received an advanced copy of Mist and Malice from NetGalley, and this was my first read by Rachel Howzell Hall but definitely not my last. From the opening pages, this author drops you straight into the foggy soaked tension of Haven, California, a small town every bit as treacherous as any big city noir. For me, private investigator Sonny Rush is an immediately compelling lead who is sharp, guarded, and carrying shadows of her own. When the runaway teen Honor Butler shows up at her door steep both terrified and desperate, Sonny is pulled into a case that feels personal from the start. Honor’s story is chilling enough, but things escalate very quickly when the body of a missing day laborer is discovered near Sonny’s cottage. What first appears to be coincidence soon twists into something far darker. As the story unfolds, Sonny’s investigation becomes as much about navigating Haven’s buried secrets as confronting the ghosts she brought with her from Los Angeles. What begins with a frightened girl on her doorstep spirals into a maze of exploitation, corruption, and smalltown loyalties twisted into something dangerous. This author layers the mystery well with each clue Sonny uncovers expands the scope of the conspiracy rather than narrowing it, keeping the tension sharp and the stakes steadily rising. What truly holds novel together is Sonny’s personal journey. She’s still trying to rebuild her life in Haven, still figuring out who she is outside the chaos she left behind. Taking on Honor’s case forces her to confront her own instincts, her need to protect, her habit of keeping people at arm’s length, and the shadows she hasn’t fully outrun yet. The deeper she digs into this case, the more she must decide how far she’s willing to go for answers and who she’s willing to risk to get them. Watching her balance grit, vulnerability, and a fierce sense of justice gives the story its emotional weight. The plot of the story is tightly woven and intensifies with each chapter as Sonny uncovers a ruthless network preying on the vulnerable and protected, of course, by the very people meant to uphold the law. Finally, the author balances the investigative tension with Sonny’s emotional stakes, especially as danger creeps closer to the people she loves. #NETGALLEY # MISTANDMALICE

Because in Haven, loyalty can be fatal, and survival is dependent on who you are willing to betray.

It’s May 2023 and former LAPD detective Sonny Rush is now a Private Investigator and moved back to the small town of Haven. She knows the town and people well since she grew up here - and she isn’t happy about it! It might look like a lovely coastal village, but it is every bit as dangerous as her former neighbourhood in Los Angeles.

When terrified teenager Honor shows up at Sonny’s door, she has her first case in the town. But as she starts investigating the horrors that Honor has told her, the body of a missing labourer turns up in the Haven woods. Are the cases linked or a terrible coincidence?

As Sonny finds herself in the middle of an investigation with some of the most powerful people on Haven, she begins to wonder, who is protecting the ruthless network of criminals causing harm within the town? Will this lead to the skeletons in hers - and her family’s closet - being exposed? Are the residents and Sonny safe within Haven?

Protagonist Sonny is very intelligent, strong and opiniated with a dark sense of humour and an enjoyable character that has been well developed by RHH. I think this story allows us to know a lot more about Sonny and her family history and relationships as well as seeing the difficulties in looking after an older parent with a deteriorating condition. She is the type of character that you want to win, which doesn’t always happen!

Told across four parts, the book covers strong themes of abuse, immigration, corruption, conspiracy and deception and potential readers should review the *trigger warnings*.

In all honesty, this feels a confusing book with more and more new characters and plots added as it goes on, diluting some of the most important themes and characters page time. Although everything connects at the end, at times if can be difficult to follow.

This is the second book within the Haven Thrillers. I would say this is not a standalone and reading book 1 of this series is essential to understand the characters, relationships and previous cases.

Thank you to NetGallery, Thomas & Mercer and Rachel Howzell Hall for the ARC of this book.

Mist and Malice by Rachel Howzell Hall is a recommended investigative thriller and the second book, following Fog and Fury, in the Haven series.

Sonny Rush, current private investigator, former LAPD detective, moved to Haven, a small town on the Northern California coast, to join her godfather’s PI business and also keep an eye (and air tag) on her mother, who has Alzheimer's and a new boyfriend. Trying to adapt to Haven has been a struggle. When runaway teenager Honor Butler shows up at her house afraid and beaten, Sonny takes care of her immediate needs before learning her story of being taken advantage of and abused. Three hours later a dead man is found in the nearby forest. He is the man whose wife said he was missing for months. These disparate cases coalesce into a massive case of corruption.

The cases are complicated so stay focused while reading as there are a lot of various plot threads and characters introduced in the development of this story. While dealing with events, she also learns some heartbreaking information that shakes up her life. Everything does connect at the end, but the lead up to the resolution can feel a bit scattered. Also, it would be beneficial for you to read the first novel in the series before this second one. While reading at times it felt like I was missing important background information.

Sonny is an intelligent, intuitive character who can be alternately humorous and deadly serious. There were several quotes from Sonny which had me immediately laughing. It is very clear that she doesn't much like the town or citizens of Haven. Along the way, some occurrences and comments do get a bit too political and judging. The final denouement is satisfying, although somethings will be continued into the next novel in the series.

Mist and Malice is an investigative thriller that will best be appreciated by those following the series. Thanks to Thomas & Mercer for providing me with an advance reader's copy via NetGalley. My review is voluntary and expresses my honest opinion.

“Mist and Malice” picks up very closely to where “Fog and Fury” ended. In fact, Figgy the goldendoodle (Sonny Rush’s first case as a PI) still hasn’t made it home (although, to be fair, of his pet parents, the daughter is dead, the mother is in jail, and the father — the now ex-romantic reason Alyson came to H(e)aven before she knew about his family — is a mess). I’d suggest you read the first book to get to fully know how haunted Haven is.

Haven is as much a character as the interesting group of characters that Howzell has created. There are still only four full-time Black residents in this Mayberry-by-the-Sea with an identity problem: “A fancy place like Pebble Beach or a town without locals and no new development? A ghost town? A town of long-term renters? The little town that could or the little town that won’t?”

Yet, just weeks after moving here, Sonny has another dead man found way too close to the house she rents from Elliott and Giovanni, owners of the Sweetlife Bakery. And, they, too, are implicated in another Haven horror tale: a cupcake poisoner who adds an extra ingredient to their wares and leaves them around town.

Sonny is also involved in another missing teenager case — the daughter of another crazy woman running for mayor (who replaces the crazy woman candidate from “Fog and Fury”). And, yay, Brady Kwon of the Mendocino County Sheriff’s office returns.

Rachel Howzell Hall consistently writes strong, confident, smart Black female protagonists with real life challenges. Inger Tudor’s narration is a terrific performance, bringing this brash, beautiful, Black woman to life.

Sonny is another heroine with some faults and self-doubts, but she is memorable and deserving of a continuing series to star in. “Fog and Fury” did end abruptly and left quite a few loose ends, presumably readying us for “Mist and Malice.” You’ll enjoy seeing those loose ends go away (and Figgy does get home). But if there’s a third Haven thriller, I’ll be back, too. 4.5 stars.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an eARC of Mist and Malice by Rachel Howzell Hall in exchange for my honest review.

Overall, this was a good sequel and one I was excited to dive into after reading Fog and Fury. The story continues to explore timely and relevant immigration concerns within our country, which added depth and weight to the plot. I really appreciate how the author weaves real-world issues into a suspenseful narrative.

One of my favorite parts of the book was getting to learn more about Sonny—especially her dynamic with her mom. Their relationship feels layered and authentic, and I loved the moments they shared. This line especially resonated with me: “The world keeps turning,” Mom said, “so move your ass and drink some wine.” It perfectly captured her mom’s voice and strength. I also enjoyed seeing more of Sonny and Cooper and whether they’re truly able to navigate a relationship after everything they’ve been through. Watching that unfold added an emotional layer to the story. And honestly this quote, “If coffee could marry me, I’d demand that ring today.” — was relatable on every level.

There was also a moment toward the end where a new revelation comes to light, and as Sonny was described lifting her eyebrows in surprise, I literally did the same. I love when a book pulls you in so completely that you physically react along with the character.

If I had one critique, it would be that there were a lot of new characters introduced throughout the story. At times, it felt like there was constantly a new character—and their cousin or granddad—being added to the mix, which became somewhat confusing for me and made it difficult to keep track of everyone.

That said, I would recommend this sequel to readers who have read Fog and Fury. Just be aware that the number of characters may take a little extra focus to follow. Overall, it was an engaging and meaningful continuation of the series.

I went into this second installment in the Haven series a little disoriented—mainly because I could not remember how the first book ended. I knew there was a cliffhanger, but I couldn’t recall the details, and unfortunately this book doesn’t do much to re-ground you in that thread. If you’re someone who needs continuity, I’d definitely recommend a quick recap before diving in.

That said, the atmosphere in this series continues to be its strongest asset. Haven feels just as eerie, isolated, and quietly dangerous as it did in the first book. The fog, the tension, and that underlying sense that something is always “off” really pulls you in. It’s the kind of setting that almost becomes a character itself—and it’s what kept me reading.

The plot centers around Sonny Rush being pulled into multiple cases that begin to intertwine—a runaway teen with a disturbing story and the discovery of a body tied to a missing persons case. The premise is compelling, and the themes around exploitation and corruption add weight to the story. However, the execution felt a bit crowded. There are a lot of moving parts, and at times it became distracting rather than suspenseful.

The number of side characters also made it harder to stay fully engaged. Instead of adding depth, it sometimes felt like too many threads competing for attention, which diluted the emotional impact of the main storyline. I found myself wanting a tighter focus on Sonny and the core mystery.

Overall, this book delivers on mood and tension, but struggles with pacing and clarity due to the layered plots and large cast. If you loved the atmosphere of the first book, it’s still worth continuing the series—but going in with a refresher will definitely make the experience smoother.

Thanks to NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer for a digital ARC.

Mist and Malice really leans into that moody, small-town vibe where everybody knows everybody and nobody is as innocent as they seem. Haven looks picturesque on the surface, all coastal fog and tight-knit community, but underneath it’s layered with old grudges, generational loyalty, and secrets that have been protected for way too long.

What I liked most is how much this story centers on family and legacy. In Haven, your last name carries weight. Blood ties matter. So do old alliances. And when trouble hits, the instinct isn’t always to seek justice. It’s to protect your own, no matter the cost. That tension gives the mystery real emotional punch.

Hall also doesn’t shy away from the uglier side of small-town culture. There’s an undercurrent of racism and sexism that feels uncomfortably real. Power tends to sit in the same hands, and those in charge are quick to dismiss, silence, or underestimate women, especially women who don’t fit their mold. That makes Sonny Rush such a satisfying lead. She’s sharp, persistent, and refuses to be pushed aside. The female characters in general have grit. They may be navigating systems stacked against them, but they aren’t passive. They fight back in ways that feel grounded and believable.

The pacing slows a bit in places as all the relationships and town history unfold, but it ultimately adds depth. This isn’t just a twisty thriller. It’s a story about what happens when loyalty becomes corruption and when women decide they’re done playing nice.

Overall, this one delivers strong atmosphere, complicated family dynamics, and women who refuse to stay quiet. Definitely a solid four-star read, especially if you like your thrillers dark, layered, and rooted in messy human dynamics.

There’s something wrong with Haven… and you feel it before anything even happens.
Mist and Malice leans hard into that fog-soaked, coastal small-town unease where everything looks quiet on the surface—but nothing actually is. Every conversation feels loaded. Every relationship has history. And every single person is hiding something.
Sonny Rush is the kind of main character you don’t just follow—you trust. She’s sharp, stubborn, and running on pure instinct and exhaustion, trying to rebuild a life while everything around her keeps unraveling. When a terrified runaway girl lands on her doorstep and a body turns up nearby, what starts as a single case spirals into something much bigger—something rooted deep in Haven’s foundations.
This isn’t just a mystery. It’s corruption wrapped in community. Loyalty turned dangerous. Power protecting itself at all costs.
The tension builds in layers instead of rushing—every clue widening the scope instead of narrowing it. And while the pacing dips slightly at times, it adds to that suffocating feeling that this town is bigger, darker, and more connected than it should be.
What really carries the story is Sonny herself—her relationship with her mom, the emotional weight she’s carrying, and the constant push and pull between doing what’s right and what’s survivable. She doesn’t just investigate the town… she collides with it.
The atmosphere? Immaculate.
The secrets? Rotting under the surface.
The ending? Enough to make you sit there like… oh. oh that’s what we’re doing now.
If you like your thrillers dark, character-driven, and soaked in small-town secrets with real-world weight woven in—this delivers.

I received an ARC of Mist & Malice from NetGalley ahead of its 5/19 release. After finally finishing the first book in this series, I was ready to jump into this one — though admittedly I wasn’t fully excited because I didn’t love the first installment. Lately I’ve also realized I’m struggling a bit with committing to long series when my TBR is already overflowing!

That said, I do enjoy this author’s writing style. The dialogue flows easily, the pacing moves quickly, and the story stays entertaining throughout. Sonny is very much the same character from book one, complete with her constant side commentary and judgments. Honestly, I agreed with some of her rants, but they are definitely a huge part of the story. In this installment, though, her narcissistic tendencies felt even stronger — we get it, Sonny, you’re beautiful and smart.

This second book picks up immediately after the first and adds a new mystery involving a man locked in a basement. While reading, I was also reminded just how many loose ends were left unresolved from book one: Who attacked Sonny? Where is the dog? What’s happening with her affair with Cooper? And somehow… we are eating Cheetos again. Seriously, what is with the Cheetos?

The book also introduces a lot of new characters and side plots. At times it felt like too much, though I can see it being setup for a more from this series. Personally, I prefer when more of the story is wrapped up within each individual book rather than leaving so many dangling threads.

Overall, while this series ultimately isn’t for me and I won’t continue with future books, I can still see the appeal. If you enjoy quick-moving mysteries with a strong, kickass FMC and don’t mind ongoing storylines across multiple books, this may work well for you.

many thanks and gratitude to NetGalley and Brilliance Publishing for providing me with an early audiobook copy of Mist and Malice by Rachel Howzell Hall in exchange for my thoughts and honest review.

firstly, this is the second book in a series but, in my experience of listening to the audiobook, it didn’t make this book hard to follow (though i do plan to grab a copy of said first book because i enjoyed this one so much!). there were some references to the main character’s past, but i think the author did a good job of giving context to certain aspects of her life and relationships with other characters.

from the opening scene until the final sentence, i was compelled and intrigued by the main character, Sonny. she’s serious and focused when it comes to her work and justice but also has her funny and vulnerable moments. i thought that this mystery was paced well; tension and high intensity scenes were written to stir up my anxiety and the author also slowed the plot down when needed. the narrator, Inger Tudor, did an excellent job conveying the emotions and tone of the characters, something very important in this book. the story is layered, atmospheric, and questions the meaning of community and what it means to be loyal. there are important themes covered in this; the ebb and flow of it all is so satisfying and the final reveal was stunning…stunning!

like i mentioned, i want to go back and read the first book, but i think this is a fantastic read and look forward to reading more in the series in the future!

This is the second in the Haven mystery series about Sonny Rush, a former cop and current private investigator, and new resident of the quaint town of Haven that’s turning out to be anything but. A missing person case turns into a trafficking case with ties to some of the most powerful residents of Haven. Another involves a missing husband who was working on the new spa resort, the brainchild of Sonny’s ex, Cooper. And Sonny’s beginning to regret his ‘ex’ status, even though he messed up before, not being honest with Sonny. On top of all that, Sonny’s mom is struggling with her diminishing health at the same time she reconnects with an old friend. A male ‘friend’ whom Sonny doesn’t trust. Whew, it's no wonder she’s about ready to lose it!

Even with all the various subplots, the story never gets too confusing to keep straight. She makes some heartbreaking discoveries about people close to her that she never saw coming, and I doubt the readers will, either. Even though this is the second in a series, you don’t have to have read the first one, but it would definitely help. It jumps in from where the last one ended, and I had to remind myself who some of the characters were and what they had done.

The author has a laidback and easy writing style that makes Sonny’s character so down-to-earth and real. She has her flaws, but she never hesitates to own them. It’s refreshing to see that, and I can’t wait for what comes next.

My thanks to NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer for the free advanced reading copy of this book.

It pains me to give Howzell Hall such a low rating, but this was not for me. Despite not being a likable character, Sonny is complex and interesting, so I had no issues rooting for her. The flawed relationship with her mother and her closeness to bestie India are exceptionally well portrayed. The writing is beautiful and so atmospheric that it’s not hard to picture Haven. My problem was with the pacing. Fog and Fury had a heavy political undertone, but it was pertinent and not preachy. This second volume forgot all restraint and the plot kept pausing for Sonny’s rants. I understand why she feels that way, but I just wanted to know whodunit. I also had a problem with the plot, which kept speeding up and slowing down, including too many details about one thing and then rushing through parts that could have been more suspenseful. And then, well, the big reveals were underwhelming or didn’t make a lot of sense based on what came previously. “This character is good, oh no, he’s bad, oh no, he is good after all, oh wait…” is OK once but doing it with everybody all the time is just silly. Lastly, she falls into a trap she had avoided thus far: Not for me.
I chose to read this book and all opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased. Thank you, NetGalley/Thomas & Mercer.

Mist and Malice by Rachel Howzell Hall is a beautifully written, atmospheric sequel that offers a meaningful exploration of timely social issues, even as it struggles under the weight of its own complex structure.

Continuing the journey from Fog and Fury, the story dives deep into relevant concerns about immigration, lending real-world weight to a suspenseful narrative. The strengths of the book lie in its character work; Sonny is a complex, flawed, and deeply interesting protagonist, and her authentic, layered relationships with her mother and her best friend, India, provide the story's emotional heart. The setting of Haven is rendered with such atmospheric detail that it is effortless to picture.

However, the reading experience is hindered by disjointed pacing and an overabundance of characters. The plot frequently speeds up and slows down at odd intervals, lingering on minor details while rushing through potentially suspenseful moments. The narrative is further complicated by a constant influx of new characters and a repetitive "good-guy/bad-guy" flip-flopping that eventually loses its impact. While an engaging continuation for dedicated fans of the series, it requires a high level of focus to navigate the chaotic plot. A solid but "complicated" 3 stars for a sequel that is as meaningful as it is confusing.

Many thanks to NetGalley, Amazon Publishing | Thomas and Mercer, and Brilliance Publishing for gifting me both a digital and audio ARC of the second in the Haven Thriller series by Rachel Howzell Hall, with the audiobook perfectly narrated by Inger Tudor. All opinions expressed in this review are my own - 4 stars!

PI Sonny Rush is pulled into a new case when Honor Butler shows up at her door scared to death. Honor tells Sonny a horrifying story of what she was forced to do. Only hours later, a missing man is found dead in the forest near Sonny's cottage. Are these two cases related? Is the town of Haven corrupted?

This book follows immediately after the events of the first book in this series, Fog and Fury, so reading that one first is a must. Sonny is a wonderful character - flawed, funny, trying to move on from her past, and trying to do her best for her mom, who is struggling with dementia. You can feel her stress coming off in waves. The small town of Haven is a character in itself, with the fog hanging over the area keeping its residents secrets close. The mystery is well plotted and the tension high, and I'm looking forward to more in this series! The narration was great and pulled me even more into the story.

If you thought the first Haven mystery had you stressed, just wait! Mist and Malice is the kind of sequel that doesn’t politely knock - it kicks down the door. Howzell Hall does exactly what she does best: drags you straight into the fog. Picking up immediately after book one, you’re dropped right back into the chaos like you never left. And honestly, I love that! Theres mystery, confusion, and an overwhelming sense that something is not as it seems.

As the FMC investigates a missing man, the story weaves true surrounding the USA’s current immigration tensions. The social commentary feels current and grounded, adding more complexity to the situation. But with her attempted poisoner still lurking around, and her mother’s worsening dementia, it’s a wonder our FMC can think straight - let alone solve a case. But of course she does what she does best. She digs.

When the truth is revealed prepare for your jaw to drop, staring at the book questioning everything - maybe even your own trust in those around you.

Huge thanks to Thomas & Mercer and NetGalley for the ARC. This sequel delivers and now I’m desperately waiting for the next!

This is the second in a series. And while I always recommend that you read a series in order, you REALLY need to read this series in order! There are so many things carried over from the first book that you would feel lost in this continuation if you haven't read the first one already. (As evidenced by the reviews posted from people who didn't read the first one.)

This second book in the series starts within hours of the first book ending. This is a good thing if you read the first one, because it had a nice little surprise ending. This story continues to follow Sonny as she deals with not only the fall out from the events in the first book, but in the things she uncovers during the course of this second installment. Haven might be a pretty town, but it's a pretty like Twin Peaks was pretty. I liked how the story mirrored Sonny's discovery of her own past with the lose of her mother to dementia. And it is all played out in a suspenseful manner, keeping the reader engaged the whole time. Though I'm not sure where the series is headed, so far it has been a great read!

Thanks to NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer for a copy of the book. This review is my own opinion.

Mist and Malice is the 2nd book in the “Haven” series, which features ex-LAPD homicide detective and now PI Sonny Rush who works in her uncle’s PI agency in Haven, California. This book picks up right where book 1 ended, and it took a while to remember the events of that book, but the author does a good job of filling in the blanks and getting the reader up to speed. While still tying up loose ends from her previous cases, Sonny has a new missing persons case that quickly spirals into a murder investigation that endangers Sonny’s life, as some sordid secrets from her new town, and her own past, come to light. This is a powerful read, with the author’s no-holds-barred style touching on many hot button issues, deftly weaved into her investigations, and will resonate with many readers. This is a great series, and fans of the author will not be disappointed in this latest effort. Definitely recommended. I received an ARC of this book from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I didn't realize this was a part of a series and I wish that I had read the first one in case I missed something. I did get through it as standalone but with series I like to read all the books because often they build on one another. I still thought this book was a solid read. It's like an investigative thriller, with Sonny solving cases. She is a former LAPD detective and now an private investigator living in a small town in California. That small town seems to be a very dark and troubling place. Sonny seems to be an intelligent and opinionated person but also humorous/witty. She's finding that even a small town can be dangerous and especially one that she knows something about. Sometimes I get a little lost if there are multiple characters and plots going on but I still enjoyed the story and it did connect up. I have read one other book by the author and enjoy it and would be interested in reading more. I am interested in going back and reading the first book in the series also. Thank you Netgalley and Thomas and Mercer for the complimentary copy of the story.

Returning to the small sleepy town of Haven, California is dangerous. Danger is lurking just around the corner for Sonny and her mother. I was immediately pulled into the story, and I felt like I was alongside Sonny on several of her cases. Sonny is trying to figure out what to do with Honey’s case since she’s now a PI and Sonny quickly realizes she can’t do this alone. Some secrets are also revealed, and I really enjoyed seeing how Sonny dealt with her mom’s dating journey. I can’t relate, but it made the characters feel real. Dark secrets will come to light in this installment and the betrayal runs deep. I’m very eager to see what lies ahead for Sonny.

The narrator, Inger Tudor does a great job of portraying Sonny. I feel like she really captures the toughness from Sonny’s character. I’m not sure if what I’m saying is spot on but Sonny is a tough cookie. I love her. I was engaged till the very end and I was able to distinguish several of the characters.

A very special thanks to Brilliance Audio + Netgalley for the gifted ALC.

A repeat juvenile runaway shows up on Sonny’s doorstep hours before a missing man is found d3ad near her home. Coincidence or conspiracy?

The former law enforcement officer turned PI realizes this small town truly brings everyone and everything closer to home! From knocks on her door to bodies nearby, Sonny is in the middle of it! Betrayals and secrets are in full force in the second installment of the Haven Thriller series.

I definitely recommend starting with Fog and Fury and not just jumping in with book 2. There’s a lot going on in the book and being added in as it goes on so try to hang in there.

The audio was narrated by Inger Tudor. I felt she really brought out Sonny’s personality and edge. The very matter of fact and to the point delivery flowed well with this procedural.

Thank you to the author, Rachel Howell Hall, Publishers Thomas & Mercer, Brilliance Audio and NetGalley, for the opportunity to listen to and read this book. I received a gifted copy and am leaving my review voluntarily.

***I received an ARC from Net Galley in exchange for my honest review

Private investigator Sonny Rush is the newest resident of Haven, California. She quickly lands two cases - repeat runaway Honor Butler and the missing husband of Araceli Rivas. Honor shows up at Sonny's home, terrified, after being reported missing by her mother. Her former best friend was just discovered dead, although Honor doesn't seem to know anything about that. Emiliani Rivas went to the store for a propane tank refill for their gas grill, and disappeared without a trace. He was later discovered in the woods not far from Sonny's house. Surrounded by corrupt cops and ICE agents who are looking to deport anyone undocumented like Rivas, Sonny doesn't know who to trust. And it looks like someone has her in their sights as well. This is the second book in the series. I haven't read the first book, so I didn't have anything to compare it to, but I feel like each could be read as a standalone.

Many thanks to NetGalley for the chance to read this ARC of Mist and Malice.

Mist and Malice sees a return to Haven with another atmospheric thriller that deepens the mystery and develops Sonny Rush’s character.

Private investigator Sonny Rush is still finding her footing in the fog-bound coastal town where she now lives and a teenage runaway, Honor, turns up at her door in fear. Sonny is drawn into a case that quickly spirals beyond all expectations. Then the discovery of a murdered worker near her cottage exposes something far more unsettling. The plot exposes a conspiracy rooted in exploitation, power and betrayal.

The plotting is well researched and deliberately paced. Overall, this is a thoughtful, character-driven crime novel with real thematic depth. Not quite relentless in pace, but rich in tension and moral complexity — and a strong continuation of the Haven series.

🚨 Corruption and Fraud
🔎 Snarky, Badass PI
🌲 Idyllic Town w/ Dark Secrets

In the idyllic town of Haven, not all is what it seems. Our FMC, PI Sonny Rush, must hunt for the pieces of the puzzle to uncover the deep-seated corruption and find justice for the victims.

I really enjoyed watching the secrets unfold and seeing how each crime connected. Rush is intelligent, snarky, and takes absolutely no bull. Despite every obstacle placed before her, she persevered!

While police procedurals aren't usually my personal go-to, this was still a really solid, engaging read. If you enjoy procedurals and closely following a detailed investigation, you will definitely love Mist and Malice!

Thank you so much Brilliance Audio, Thomas & Mercer and NetGalley for the digital review copy.

What a page turner! Lots of action in this one. In the first book, Fog & Fury, Sonny closes the but there are lots of things left unfinished. Mist & Malice picks up right where Fog leaves off. The corruption and deception of the people around Sonny and the redemption of others. I really could feel her struggle with Cooper and was secretly hoping they could figure themselves out. Her godfather was questionable in the first book and really shows his true colors in this one. I never liked him. The writing, character development and complexity is done perfectly. I was sucked right in and the plot twists with all the connections throughout Haven were woven together in a masterful way. I can’t wait to see what can happen in the next one!

Investigation, danger, secrets!

I really enjoyed this suspenseful story Mist and Malice by Rachel Howzell.

I received an advanced copy to read from Thomas & Mercer and NetGalley.

It tells the story of Sonny Rush, a small-town private investigator, who moves to Haven, California, only to discover that new place is more dangerous! When Honor Butler, a runaway teenager, seeks her help, she reveals disturbing secrets that quickly lead her to investigate about another missing person. As her investigation unfolds, Sonny uncovers a conspiracy involving a ruthless network protected by local authorities. The deeper she digs, the greater the danger becomes for her and those she loves, forcing her to confront her own past.

I am a sucker for a P.I. novel, especially one written by Rachel Howzell Hall. I am loving the Haven series, where it seems like a fresh start for Sonny, but not really. The story line with her father's past and her month's future are heartbreaking, not to mention her tenuous place as a former LAPD cop amongst the small town cops in Haven.
I feel like SO MUCH happened in this book--picture me with a bunch of string tying all the pieces together. The build up to the last few scenes of the book was well worth the wait. Didn't see it coming at all.
I do now wonder what's next for Sonny....
I listened to the audio and it was very well performed. Kept me company through a litany of busy work which is always a good test.

Something is broken in a small coastal town, but with powerful individuals seeking to cover up the carefully hidden horror of unspeakable things taking place, there is no easy way to fix what isn't admitted to be broken...

This one was a bit of a mixed bag for me but I like this writer. Elements of the story telling felt slightly repetitive, and because it is part of a series not reading the other book made it feel like there was something missing. But it does work as an atmospheric tale located in a setting that is successfully brought to life, so it's worth checking out.

I love the foggy, coastal vibes of this book. I live in Northern Californian so this added to my enjoyment of the book. Before I started this book I went and read the first Haven book so that I could know what was happening. I definitely think this helped to set up the characters and continue the story from where book one left off. You might not need to read the first book, but I certainly think it helps. I love the characters of the book but boy do a lot of things bad happen in this small town. I will probably continue to read the series just to see what happens.

Thank you to NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer for the ARC.
