I received a copy of this book thanks to the publishers via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review, my thanks for the opportunity.
This is a truly outstanding work of fiction, it's got everything going for it, a strong plot, fluid writing, tension, emotion, well developed characters, well paced with a fantastic ending. Need I say more? Well okay maybe just a bit.
So what's the book about then?
When three-year-old Olivia disappears, her parents are overwhelmed with grief. Weeks go by and Olivia’s mother refuses to leave the cottage, staring out at the turbulent sea and praying it didn’t claim her precious daughter’s life.
Not far away, another mother watches proudly as her daughter starts school. Jennifer has loved Hailey for five years, but the child is suddenly moody and difficult, and there’s a niggling worry of doubt that Jennifer cannot shake off. As she struggles to maintain control there are gaps in her story that even she can’t explain.
It's every mother's worst nightmare, a day at the beach, one minute you can see your daughter the next you can't, and suddenly all eyes are on you as you should have been taking care of her more closely, the guilt on top of the grief is overwhelming. You know your husband thinks it's your fault.
This plays on the emotions this book, it's so well written that you are placed right there with the grief of this family, as they try to come to terms with what has happened to Olivia, the final thoughts by most being that she drowned at sea, never to be seen again. Tragic and awful. A grieving mother, strains in the marriage, a young son to still love and take care of. Life must go on.
Some books don't get written conversation down very well, this book is different, each verbal interaction is as smooth as silk, it flows to make it so easy on the reader to be part of the discussion, totally in the moment.
She had vanished off the face of the earth. The news reports all said 'missing, believed drowned.' But there was still no proof, and dear God, as Livvy's mother, she just needed proof.
Olivia's mother is holding on that she's not dead, and if she is dead she wants proof. Everyone else is moving on. But Olivia's mother just can't give up, not fully.
The doctor arrived when she was sitting wrapped in a blanket with a hot water bottle, being fed lentil soup by Mary. It was as if she were at the theatre, and all the people here were putting on a performance especially for her. They were acting out a story, speaking their lines and gesticulating, but none of it was real.
The book takes you on a very unexpected journey, and it's powerful reading, I remember literally gasping at points in this book and feeling so moved by it in others. The characters are incredibly tangible and real, some I loved, others I despised, some I pitied, some I wanted to hold.
I had a lot of emotions stirred reading this book and could not stop reading until I had absorbed every last word and felt every last feeling. Phew! I survived the entire journey in one piece (just).
I can't rave about this book enough, it was excellent reading from the first word to the last, the clever plot, the grand finale, all of it, just stunning, a stunning work of fiction. I had never heard of Linda Huber before reading this but will be watching her as an author to watch in the future and am keen to read more of her work.
Brilliance, sheer brilliance.
