Broken Alpha

Rate this book
Luke

Having never scented an Omega, it seems I was destined to never find a partner, which suited my parents just fine since they’re determined to find one for me, regardless of my preferences. What I hadn’t anticipated was the scent of the forest entering my classroom, disrupting my life and setting me on a course I never prepared for. But a mistake by my hands may have damaged any chances I had at happiness.

Aidyn

I’m tired of suppressants that were made for my designation not working for me like they should, while I attempt to balance my last year of university. However, when my inner Omega takes interest in my teacher, I’m unable to stop the trajectory of events. I can only hope it won’t cost me everything I’ve worked so hard for.

Broken Alpha is a 18+ MM Age Gap Mpreg Omegaverse set in college between a teacher and his student. Dual First Person POV with a HEA.

Dnf 58% - throwing in all my towels.

The negative:
-Very, very sloppy editing. The story is written in past tense, yet nearly on every other page there is one sentence (sometimes more than one) written in present tense.
Incorrect punctuation, semicolons used instead of commas, grammar errors. Long winded rambling thoughts, without pause.
-Too much info dumping at the beginning, and even at different poins throughout the book. It would have been much better to let the reader get a feeling for the characters and then slowly add details about the omegaverse.
-It's crazy that at the start of the book there's a note that the book was edited professionally, even the editor's name was added. English is only my third language, but the constant errors right from the start on were impossible to ignore.
-At the end of the book the author thanks their alpha and beta readers, so obviously they had alpha and beta readers (beside an editor), but why didn't anybody of those point out the many, many mistakes?? It's not enough to hype up an aspiring author, support them by being critical and honest, ffs.

The positive
-I appreciated how the author wrote the fated mates theme. There's irresistible attraction between Alpha and Omega from their first meeting on, but both Alpha and Omega tried to hold back on their need for sex in the beginning, wanting to first experience closeness together, snuggling and cuddling, kissing and hugging.

Sadly the poor execution and the many, many mistakes made reading this story a frustrating experience. I wanted to at least get to their mating, but sorry, can't do it, I'm giving up at 58%.

It's a shame that the author trusted the wrong people to help them publish their first work. I can only imagine how different and better this could have been, with honest and critical alpha and beta readers, and a good editor.

I love omegaverse stories, and I couldn't put this one down. I enjoy the world-building, character arcs, and the love at first sight between alpha Luke and omega Aidyn. Also, the forbidden element of Luke being Aidyn's professor adds a lot of drama and controversy. Another fascinating part of this story is the inclusion of dominant alphas and omegas, which makes Luke and Aidyn's designations even more unique and rare, and their instant connection even stronger proof of their fated mate bond.

Luke and Aidyn quickly realize they share an instant connection, which rapidly develops into a primal and possessive bond neither can ignore or escape. Both have been searching for their other half, and even though this isn’t the ideal time and place, they agree to pursue their connection.

Overall, I love the growth between these two and how clearly they adore and love each other.
Luke and Aidyn go through a lot to be together and their HEA is hard-won and complete.

Luke + Aidyn 🖤
Professor & student | "Fuck it" moment | "Little Fawn"

"Jesus fuck, you're beautiful."

"Soft, pale and perfect, with a cute cock begging for attention."

"I'm sorry, little fawn. Waking next to you naked in my bed made me want to claim you again."
"Never apologize for claiming what's yours."

"My first and last thoughts of the day are of you. I seek you out when I enter spaces you frequent; I check my phone constantly, thinking it vibrates with a new messaage from you. You consume my very being in ways no one else ever has. You're my mate, and I won't believe differently. I'm only uncomfortable when we're apart. You could never be too needy because your desires are the air I breathe. You could never be obsessive because i already worship the ground you walk on... You are my biggest weakness and greatest strength, and it us my duty to cherish and love you. And it will be a blessing to do so."

"Topped by your Omega while your pup grows within him. Such a perverted Alpha."

Nope to this one. Both the romance and the writing style aren’t doing it for me.

The connection between the MCs is based on lust and scent. No depth to the relationship or the characters. All we know about them is their oh so important designation.

[…]this had been on his ‘TBR’ pile for a while. I wasn’t even aware that the book community had its own set of acronym code words until he explained that it's a short way to say ‘to be read’

And the over-explanatory writing style was starting to piss me off. Even if you’ve never read an omegaverse romance before, there are ways to introduce new elements in a more cohesive way to make readers understand your world without the need to info-dump from page 1.
And was all that necessary to say he’s been wanting to read that book? Do you really have to explain what TBR means??
Poorly edited, too much info-dumping, and the romance isn’t worth it. I’m out.

This book completely surprised me, in the best way!! I’ve read a ton of Omegaverse stories before, but this one hits different!!
The whole thing had this quiet, aching intimacy that pulled me in right away and didn’t let go. The way the author built the world was subtle but really well done and I loved how the Omegaverse elements actually added to the emotional depth instead of just being used for drama.

Luke is a so-called “broken” Alpha, he’s never been able to scent anyone, let alone knot and Aidyn is a dominant Omega whose suppressants have stopped working. From the second Aidyn walks into Luke’s classroom, the connection is instant. Like fated mate level of intense. And their chemistry was amazing !! Like, I’m still thinking about some of those scenes. Spicy doesn’t even begin to cover it.

„You could never displease me. You are a gift, Aidyn, one I never thought I’d receive.“

But what really got me was the tenderness. Watching Luke help Aidyn build his first nest was so adorable! And I loved that he supports Aidyn without trying to control him.
But what I lived the most was the scenes where Luke let Aidyn rip him. It was such s beautiful, hot and emotionally loaded scene, which I won’t forget so fast!

It’s rare to find something that balances raw heat with this kind of emotional vulnerability, but this book nailed it. It’s soft, it’s sexy and it made me feel everything. Especially loved how both of them had kind of given up on the idea of ever really belonging to and then they found home in each other. That really got me.

And I still can’t believe this was the author’s debut. Like… how?! I’ll be keeping an eye out for whatever comes next!!

This was a sweet book, and good for a debut, there were just a lot of little things that could use a lot of improvement.

My biggest issues where the typos and the phrasing in some sections where it seemed like past and present tense mixed.

That said, there were a few sexy surprises for me towards the end.

this is more like 2.5

i wanted to love this book because i ADORE omegaverse. add in the forbidden aspect of an age gap with a student/teacher relationship, sign me the fuck up! but something just didn't work for me here

first, let me say that i enjoyed how their scents calmed each other. i loved how luke took care of aidyn. i especially loved the possessiveness. i loved how there was importance placed on omegas nesting. not enough books have that! AND THE PURRING!!! gah! i usually only see alpha's doing that for omegas so i REALLY loved that aidyn purred for luke. it was so sweet!

but i kept getting pulled out of the story by inconsistent tense usage. and holy information overload! i know the author was world building, but there were times when i felt things were overexplained, and then i just couldn't get behind their designations being treated as a separate entity within them

also, i kind of hated that while it was understandable for an omega to have brain fog while in heat, an alpha's rut wasn't treated the same. i understand aidyn being upset at being bitten without his consent, and the shock of being pregnant, but to act like luke had betrayed him when luke expressed he had gone into rut irritated me. aidyn didn't even give luke a chance to explain anything at first and just left his condo when he woke up! and then pretty much slammed the door in his face when luke showed up at his apartment to explain things! but what killed me was when aidyn was suddenly on board with them exchanging mating bites and all but pouted when luke was hesitant to rush into it after what happened before. like no offense, but none of the reasons aidyn gave for wanting the bite now were along the lines of "because i love you and want to spend my life with you". they were more like "your family won't accept me/us and will try to take you away from me" 😒

something else, i kind of wish we'd seen forester's punishment because come on! he pushed a pregnant omega down the stairs!!! and it wasn't an accident or an "oopsie, i didn't know he was pregnant" situation. there should have been more consequences for that. and i wish erik hadn't turned out to be a dick and had been apologetic and gotten over himself so they could be friends because i felt bad for aidyn losing that friendship since it meant so much to him

I liked the idea of this book and a lot of things were very unique, but this is a very - very fresh author and the art of writing needs more work.
The book has huge infodumps at the beginning, before I was invested in the characters I had to read the entire lore of this omegaverse, which is a classic newbie mistake. Instead of getting me interested in the character, I was slogging through long paragraphs with not many new lines. You don't see that with more mature authors.
I had a feeling the author had been on Wattpad before, as some of the mannerisms suggested it.

On the plus side, the characters were likable and the sex scenes were good, so I think this author can grow in the future, with the help of a lot of beta readers and editors, there's a need for them.
But I won't rule out reading more from this author in the future. The Omegaverse is interesting.

Good premise but the writing is a mess

I wanted to like this book, and small parts of it were enjoyable-- the main characters were likeable and the alpha/beta/omega world was interesting, even though overly described in the beginning.

Unfortunately there's a lot more to dislike about this story. It pains me to write such a review but I feel it's necessary for the author to understand why I could not give a better rating.

First, the author mainly told, not showed. The writing was overly descriptive about completely unnecessary information when the same information should have either been written as dialogue between characters or scrapped all together. It made reading really tedious at times, especially the first date at the bookstore. I found myself skimming to get through it.

Second, the frequent and consistent flip flop between 3rd and 1st person POV throughout the entire book was really off putting. These are things that having alpha and beta readers as well as an editor would catch, and I wholeheartedly recommend this going forward.

Third, phrasing was awkward at times and there were several misspellings which could be forgiven if the other glaring issues weren't present, so this just added to the sloppy feel of the story.

Finally, the pacing was really disjointed due to to the pov changes and the telling not showing aspect. I truly hope the writer is able to hone their skills in the future because it is clear they have interesting stories to tell, but I hope they are able to really focus on good editing in the future.

It’s a FANFIC , with potential.

The world building was just too confusing for me. Why are there double roles? It didn’t make sense to me. Too complex and unnecessary.

The omegaverse itself was overexplained and took too long to grab my attention. The pacing was all over the place, some parts dragged on forever, others felt rushed. Where was the editor? Or did the author pick someone who wasn’t willing to be honest?

The concept had promise, but I wasn’t convinced by the dynamic between the main characters. Something was missing. It felt like the author was trying too hard to be fresh and original, but ended up overdoing it. If omegas are dominant, then what’s the point of alphas? Why not just drop the labels altogether?

If every story is about rejecting the roles, then disbalance no longer exist. It just becomes the new rule. There’s nothing rebellious about it when every author is doing it.

I bet writing a book with classic omegaverse roles is now super rare and unique. An act of rebellion against the mainstream? :D

What a great start!

The was a new author first novel and boy this they do a great job with this! I loved every moment of this book. I wanted more. I hope this becomes a series. This has all of the things I LOVE about omegaverse. And while there was a pull that could have become insta love they did have a journey to get their HEA. I loved their communication, and that they really worked to make sure the relationship was what they both wanted.
The writing was good and the smexy was hawt! I hope we get a book for Ryan. He needs his person.

For future me:
Dual POV
No cheating/sharing
Not strict role
No relationship before spice

This was enjoyable read with two very likable characters. I thought Luke was such a great alpha and even being a dominant alpha he had his insecurities. Aidyn was sweet and I thought they matched each other very well. I loved their intimate moments where they just wanted to be in each other’s arms even without it being sexual. I really wish we would have learned their ages though and I honestly have no idea what Luke looks like.

There were a few things that bugged me though:
1. Aidyn had sex with someone the night before he met Luke. I would have preferred it to be a little longer in between.
2. Aidyn slept with his best friend/roommate in the past and this guy still continued to be his bff and roommate. I really hate when authors do this. I was satisfied with how it ended up though.
3. I didn’t like how Aidyn handled the sort of third act break up. Like I get Luke messed up but he should know by now that Luke would have never done anything to intentionally hurt him and I didn’t like that Aidyn let his best friend who he’d slept with in the past comfort him in this time (nothing sexual but still)

So all in all I liked it but Luke was definitely my favorite.

NO CHEATING
OP DRAMA (Luke’s friend tries to set him up but he’s not interested, his parents also push a woman on him but again he’s not interested especially since he’s not into women. Aidyns bff is in love with him but Aidyn doesn’t see him like that)

After Luke made the mistake, it kinda went downhill for me because it felt so rushed.
Also, I felt like it was genuinely a mistake. Not intentional at all.
The bonding didn't feel like it was for the right reason either but because of the parents, to ease pain...
It was coasting at a 5 until then.

Whew 😮‍💨😮‍💨 This was everything I wanted, needed and more. This sated the craving in my soul to see a man get bred and knocked up.🥹🥹😚😚

I love me a good Mpreg story with a nice plot and not just smut smut smut. The smut in this was good but it wasn’t the main dish of the book and wasn’t used as fillers either. The plot was what had my attention and kept me seated. Not to mention, Luke and Aidyn are absolute darlings. I love this and I’m definitely keeping an eye out for this author and their next book. 😇😍🥰

Omegaverse story

Aidyn and Luke’s abo story. This is an omegaverse story set in an alternative reality.
The story was OK, but I somehow endeavor felt that I got to know the characters or felt any kind of emotional intensity from them.
The story felt unfinished, the world building felt patchy.
My perception of it felt like it was very flat affect . This was not a terrible book. It just did not resonate with me.

I found out about the book because it was all over my social media, the author did an insanely intense promo campaign and I bought it blindly, intrigued by the tropes. The author should really offer her services as a book marketer, she is good! I opened the fridge and there it was!

Unfortunately, the book had trouble delivering what it promised, it had a lot of editing problems, needed more proofreading, I had trouble getting into the events that came out of nowhere. It took me a long time to get through the plot and the ending was rushed.

The forced twists.
I felt like the author did some things for the sake of "writing a story with a twist" and it didn't feel natural. So there were some unique elements (though some were clearly taken 1:1 from manhwa) that I enjoyed a bit, but some felt added just for the sake of it.
Also, an omega toping an alpha is done as such an obvious twist, but I'm not sure if this really is a new thing, it's quite popular.

Sometimes classics are a good thing, because if the writers put a twist on all the tropes we love, what's left? There's no classic trope left.

And hey, I'm not saying the book was completely bad, it had its moments, I stuck around to the end, but I'm not sure I'm going to go for the next parts.

For me it's 2.5***, but I'm rounding up since the author is new and I don't want to be a b*** .

I liked it but not as much as I wanted to. There was plenty to like - certain elements of the story, like the 2 mc's dynamic, the dominant alpha/omega thing was interesting (I don't read a lot of ABO so I don't know if it's something specific to this author or not) - but a lot of it didn't hit for me and the 🌶️ scenes were sometimes a little cookie-cutter. Also, some things felt contrived and made up on the fly and contravened previously laid-down lore.

If this is a new author, I'd be willing to give further books a go to see if those things improve.

This was a very sweet story. It was nice to see the relationship between these two develop, even if it did start off lopsided. There were times that the author seemed to be unsure as to how to refer to Aidyn in this story, especially at the end. The nickname Odie for other father and then she refers to Aidyn as the mother, just didn't feel right. At times, it felt like parts of this book featuring Aidyn's struggles were a metaphor for feminism. Those felt a bit preachy and took me out of the story a bit. It also felt a bit like an injustice because it was already stated that there was a bit of a struggle for the LGBTQ+ community in the book, but yet instead of focusing this M/M romance about something pertinent like that, it chose feminism. This wasn't prevalent in the book, but happened a couple of times, enough it to stick with me. There were also a couple of editing errors, misspelled words (Luck for Luke, etc). All in all, I did really like the book.

This book had so much potential but it was so hard to read. DNF: 45% This needs an editor and a prayer. The ideas and characters were fine but so much of it was just filler and over explaining everything. If you’ve never read an Omegaverse book, start here. If you’ve have any prior knowledge of ABO, I’d skip it. I had grace because it’s a debut but it quickly got into “written MF but only changed pronouns to make it MM” territory. It felt really icky from the start.

I was absolutely floored when I received my ARC of this book. It was everything I didn't know I needed and more.

Luke and Aidyn are exactly what the other one needed. You have Luke, who is believe to be broken since he can't do certain things that "normal" alphas can, until Aidyn walks into his classroom. Aidyn is struggling as an Omega in his own way, but finds what he needs in Luke. The witty banter and spicy scenes will have you swooning in no time.

This is a great debut novel and I can't wait to see what else we get from this author. I'm secretly hoping Ryan gets a novel. He might be a beta, but betas need love too.

Broken Alpha and his heartless Omega 🙄DNF at 93%

I wanted this book to work for me so badly. And for a long time, it almost did mostly because of Luke.

Luke is everything: gentle, emotionally aware, endlessly patient, and deeply loving. A dominant alpha who hasn’t been supported by his powerful family, works as a teacher against his family’s wishes because he believes in it and built his own financial stability to pay for his own education and ended up making a lot of money in his investments , and now lives quietly enjoying his career but he is lonely. He is broken by omegaverse standards (no knot, no scenting ability), yet he carries that with humility instead of bitterness.

Aidyn, on the other hand… slowly became impossible for me to root for.
They met by chance when he enters Luke’s class and unknowingly unlocks Luke’s scenting and is literally the one and only Omega Luke has ever scented. They try to stay away due to their relationship as teacher student but can’t help but being pulled to on another so decide to explore what’s between them in secret until Aidyn graduates.

During Aidyn’s heat, Luke does everything. Days of caregiving, sexual exhaustion, emotional vigilance. Aidyn is explicitly described as mindless with need demanding, clawing, scratching, pushing Luke harder and harder while insisting it’s just his omega nature. Luke complies, even as his own alpha is straining to surface. He is holding the line alone.

And then the breaking moment happens.

In the final sexual encounter of the heat, Luke’s alpha finally overtakes him. The haze drops over his vision. He forgets the condom. He bites Aidyn during sex something they had agreed would never happen without consent.

Luke comes back to himself immediately.

He panics. He’s terrified. He sees the bite and is horrified. There is no rationalizing. No justification. No “it was instinct.” He knows he crossed a line, and it destroys him.

Aidyn’s reaction?

He treats Luke like a criminal.

Aidyn frames it as if he’s been violated as if Luke acted with intention, as if Luke wasn’t also operating under the same biological override that Aidyn has been excused for the entire heat. Aidyn runs. Slams the door in his face. Demands space. Leaves Luke alone with guilt so heavy he believes he deserves to suffer.

And suffer he does.

Because in this world, an unreturned mating bite makes the alpha violently ill. Luke becomes feverish, weak, dizzy genuinely at risk. And what does he do? He refuses to ask for help. He tells himself this is punishment. That he deserves it.

Aidyn knows this. And still… nothing.

When Aidyn finally offers to return the bite, it feels hollow halfhearted , almost performative. Not I can’t watch you suffer. Not I love you. Just a reluctant gesture that Luke refuses, because once again, Luke is the only one prioritizing Aidyn’s comfort over his own survival.

And that is what broke the book for me.

A week later when the mating bite disappeared and the suffering ended for Luke and he is now recovered that’s when Aidyn’s morning sickness begins and Aidyn researchers that bonding helps it and suddenly the bite makes sense. Now bonding is acceptable. Now it’s practical.

Not because Luke is dying or suffering and is in pain.
Not because Luke endured days of agony.
But because it fits Aidyn’s timeline.

That moment made me close the book at 93%.

The imbalance is annoying . The narrative repeatedly excuses Aidyn’s loss of control as biology while condemning Luke for the same instinctual failure.

I don’t need perfect characters. I love flawed ones. But this was just gross. I hated Aidyn at this point so much that it physically pained me to read more.

Luke deserved better.
And I couldn’t finish watching him settle for less.

3.5 ⭐️ rounding to 4.

So…I’m digging the dominant omega and alpha whatever.
Love the little cheesy moments.

Butttt it did get a little too cheesy for my liking. Nothing bad, just my opinion.

I normally don’t do insta-love and insta-lust but omegaverse are usually different and I’m more than okay with fast pacing of the romance.

I was just a little overwhelmed with the **too** insta-loving, you know? It kind of got me skimming on the halfway mark because I can’t really deal with the cringy quotes and sweet lovely dovey moments. Had it been off paper more than on paper, I probably would have been okay with it.

But alas, it was fun.

The one thing I probably disliked more was when Aiden put the whole blame on Luke for claiming and impregnating him.

I mean…Aiden was in heat so like…it was quite a common sense that Luke probably won’t be that sober either. Especially when this whole book was preaching about how much they called for each other. There would have been zero way Luke would hold out without giving into his instincts.

To me…Aiden was also at fault as well for giving such a huge burden to an unmarked/unmated/unbonded or whatever and expect to just come out…okay…?

Maybe, this was the plot hole? Or intentional? But it honestly wouldn’t make sense.

aidyn & luke - 3.75 stars 🩵 this was a solid debut imo, a lot i loved about it although the writing can sometimes be a bit clunky but i really think that’s not the biggest deal considering this is, as said before, a debut. :) i loved the characters , at the end of the day the only thing that confused me was aidyn and erik’s friendship, and it kind of stays weirdly unresolved yet somehow absolute???? when they ‘fought’ to me it seemed like both of them overreacted honestly. like i love aidyn with my heart but he really jumped the gun insisting he was going to end his friendship with erik. NOW, that being said erik did overreact and was immature especially considering aidyn was always clear about how he felt. however, i feel like it really is normal for someone to distance themselves from someone if they find out the person they’re in love with is seeing someone else??? like it would hurt my feelings for sure???? (and trust me i was happy that aidyn and luke were together) look, i could be overthinking this lol. im not sure if this is the first in a series or just a standalone but i def think i would read another by this author :)
