What You Can't Lose: A Western Marriage of Convenience Romance

Rate this book
Sometimes you don’t realize what’s truly precious until you’re about to lose it.

Wanted for her abusive husband’s murder, Josie Callahan flees North Carolina with nothing but the clothes on her back and an unborn child she must protect. Her last option is to seek refuge in the Montana Territory, posing as a mail-order bride for a man she’s never met.

Travis Blythe believes he’s ill-suited to properly care for his children, especially when the reason they are motherless looms over him like a dark cloud. When he places an ad for a bride, he expects a mature and capable woman, not a young and mysterious one with no experience raising children.

With only lies binding them, Josie fears trusting Travis, knowing he’d never accept her past or the secret child she carries. Meanwhile, Travis senses Josie’s hiding something, yet the harder he tries to uncover the truth, the more he’s drawn to her—despite his vow to keep his heart out of it. But when a vengeful enemy from Josie’s past emerges from the shadows, they must confront their deepest fears and stand together to protect the innocent lives they hold dear.

I love a good Western, but oh my actual goodness, this one knocked my socks off. With incredible characters; a riveting, fast-paced plot; and absolutely gorgeous writing, this book had my jaw on the floor. What You Can't Lose absolutely exceeded my expectations, leaving me on the edge of my seat from the first page to the last.

Mikayla Robbins outdid herself on this one. I may be biased because I gravitate toward the Wild West, but this one may be her best book yet. 10/10 highly recommend!

This was a great story! I really enjoyed it, of course I’m a sucker for Marriage of Convenience stories, but I just loved it! Josie is on the run after killing her husband in self defense. She is newly pregnant and decides to answer a mail order bride advertisement. Travis is a widower with 4 children. And if it wasn’t for the children he wouldn’t marry again. Josie and Travis marry but he doesn’t know she is pregnant or that she killed her husband. When secrets are revealed, it puts their marriage to the test, and when an unexpected visitor shows up it gets dangerous. Like I said loved this story! Loved watching Travis and Josie fall in love. And I loved the kids. The only reason this doesn’t get 5 stars is because I felt the villain was too dark but more importantly too much detail with his killings and thoughts of it since we get his pov. Overall though I really enjoyed this story.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5

Content: strangulation(some detail), thoughts of killing/strangling/toruturing, mentions of miscarriages,

This story is packed with emotion layered with grief, healing, hope, and the slow, fragile journey of trust.

Josie is running from an abusive marriage, with a baby on the way and nowhere to turn. Answering a mail-order bride ad feels like her safest option. Travis isn’t looking for love just a mother for his four children. A wife in name only. Josie is a stranger, clearly hiding something, but she’ll have to do.

But the way she flinches when he’s near… the secrets in her eyes Travis starts to wonder what she’s really running from? Why was she in a rush to marry?

Their marriage is supposed to be one of convenience, but as their hearts start to open, and the walls begin to fall, they both realize they may want more...but with Josie's past closing in one them, are they coming to that realization too late?

Can a marriage built on survival become something more? Can love grow in the midst of so many secrets?

I really liked this one. I loved watching their hesitancy to draw close, yet slowly watching the walls around their hearts come crashing down. When Josie’s past came back to haunt her, I loved how they faced it together. The mix of family, faith, grief, and healing made this such a powerful and heartfelt read.

I gave this one 4.5 stars rounded up to 5!

4 stars. This was my first read by Mikayla Robbins, and I do not think it will be my last. I've always been fond of pioneer stories, though not crazy about marriage of convenience, and I particularly enjoyed seeing a southern belle prove herself as a farmer's wife. Josie was such a sweetheart, and I especially loved her mothering attitude towards the kids (who were so cute). Travis had a lot of issues but he worked through them and proved to be a tender, protective fellow (and so awesome with poor Josie's trauma). As for the rest of the town, they were pretty awesome—I was so impressed by how they handled the whole unexpected-baby situation. The romance was very slow-burn, and the dramatic storyline kept me hooked... and also, I was just thrilled by how Josie and Travis both spilled their secrets (which to be fair made sense) pretty early on, forgave pretty quick, and took care of each other's broken pieces! No miscommunication trope here. Finally, there was a great theme of trusting God even when the grief hurts most, and I couldn't help tearing up at a specific chapter.

Content: As this is a marriage of convenience, there's a lot of veiled mentions of sharing bedrooms, having a wedding night, trying to seduce one's husband, etc. etc. etc; but everything is clean and almost completely non-detailed. Recommended age: 18+. There's also good deal of violence (on-screen murders and abuse, causing miscarriage [not onscreen]).

*I received a complimentary copy of this book for promotional purposes. I was not required to write a positive review. These are my honest thoughts and opinions.*

I had the honor and privilege of being an ARC Reader for “What You Can’t Lose” by Mikayla Robbins. This book was so beautifully written and had me rooting for the main characters from the start. I rarely find books that I can’t put down. This book was one of them.

I can honestly say that I loved all of the protagonists. Josie is placed in an awful situation with no real help. Her only option is to become a mail-order bride to protect herself and her unborn child. Her fierce determination and maternal instincts were so easy to like. Despite years of abuse she has a heart of gold. Josie has been placed on my favorite character list.

I adored Travis from the very first page. A man of integrity, trying to do the right thing. Respectful, loving, and an amazing father. He’s the type of man any woman would love to be married to. This man has been through the wringer and even though he’s more than willing to open up his home to Josie he struggles to open up his heart. I almost shed a few tears during moments where they clearly wanted to admit their love to each other, but either past love, or doubts got in the way. I was so invested I just had to know if they would get together.

The General is by far one of the most sadistic villains I have ever read. I was shocked at his cruelty. He definitely ranks very high on the evil scale. Where Travis is a saint this man is certainly a sinner. The differences between these two men is so striking.

There were so many other things I loved about this book. The children especially were such a treasure. All of them were so sweet. I really loved the dynamic Josie had with them. It was precious and left me pleasantly surprised with how easily they warmed up to her. Mikayla also did a great job when writing the side characters in making sure they were useful to
the plot. All of them were very well written and memorable.

This is my very first ARC Book and very first book from this Genre I have ever read. All of Mikayla’s books are going to be placed on my TBR List now. Thank you so much Mikayla for allowing me to be a part of this. I really appreciate it!

I rate this book five stars. If anyone is interested, this book is available on Amazon for Pre Order and will be officially released on October 25 of this year. Be sure to grab yourself a copy and follow Mikayla on IG & Facebook.

From the moment I saw this stunning cover and watched all of Mikayla’s amazing teaser reels about this book I knew I had to read it.

It had so many elements that I love in a story:
Gritty Christian fiction
Marriage of Convenience
Mail order bride
Widowed father
A protective MMC
A FMC on the run
Found Family
Slow Burn Romance
Faith and forgiveness
Learning to love again
Western/Frontier Life setting

I will warn you this story is gritty and at times dark. The antagonist is brutally evil. There are certain instances that we see just how twisted and sadistic he is. Those were sometimes hard to read. But it play into the story well and made for a lot of suspense and danger.

I appreciated how slowly and delicately the romance was written. While during this time period and under these exact types of circumstances, many couples found themselves married to survive and thrive in a harsh and uncertain world, love could still bloom where the conditions were right. With respect and understanding. Hard work and selflessness. Honesty and faith. That was exactly what this romance reflected.

Josie was a testament to the determination and courage of women all around the world who suffer daily. I admired her strength and will to fight for herself and her unborn child.

Travis was a hardworking, devoted and besotted husband. The loss of his wife nearly destroyed him but he knew his children needed a mother and he needed helpmeet in order to continue making living on the farm. His willingness to set aside his pain for the benefit of his family was a selfless and sweet gift.

This was a beautiful story filled with hope and love and danger and suspense.

Thank you to the author for my advanced copy. All opinions are my own.

This is my ACR review thoughts on What You Can't Lose (mega late I know.....).
This was my first story by Mikayla Robbins and the first thing, I loved the writing style.
The story was beautiful.
As a survivor of being taken advantaged of Josie's battle felt real and relatable, even tho there were times I was questioned her behaviour (but everyone deals with trauma differently).
And I know that men can have any name and be either good or bad with that same name, but it was healing in a way for me to see a man named Travis be a good honourable man (even if it was fiction).

Oh my. Mikayla has outdone herself again. What You Can’t Lose will have you on the edge of your seat, heartbroken one moment and giggling the next. Sweet and tender, yet raw and vulnerable, it’s a perfect balance of hope and healing amid the grit and trials of the west. Once I started, I couldn’t put it down until I was finished. I just had to know, “How will it all end?”

This book had me hooked from the beginning! I loved getting to know the characters and I loved the time period it was set in. I loved the hint of suspense that kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time. The romance was sweet and I loved all the Christian elements of relying on God through one’s struggles. This was such a beautifully told story that had both sad and happy times! If you love Christian historical romances with lots of depth I would definitely give this one a go.

4.5/5 stars!
“What You Can’t Lose” is a story of redemption, communication, and community, filled with swoony moments, overcoming hardships, and learning to trust again.
I love Mikayla’s writing style since it is so immersive and sweet. Josie and Travis are well-rounded characters with great arcs.
The reason I can’t give it a full 5 star review is the villain POV. It felt over the top and cheesy at some points. People are like him, yes, but I found myself skimming through his chapters because of the overly dramatic internal dialogue. Just a personal preference, though.

Altogether, I really enjoyed the book, breezing through it.

I received an early ARC copy of this book in return for an honest review.

What You Can’t Lose by Mikayla Robbins is 100% going on my top-ten-reads list of 2025. This story is AMAZING! From page one, I was hooked and absolutely hated to put this book down. I felt like a kid again sneaking my book everywhere just so I could read a page or two. This book is one wild ride. I’m talking an edge-of-your-seat kind of wild ride. Our main characters are Josie and Travis. Josie is a very relatable and realistic heroine. My heart hurt for her so badly. Her life before Travis and the children is an absolute nightmare. Her husband, Marcus, is pure evil, and every time he was on the page I was filled with actual dread. He seriously creeped me out. One of the things I appreciated about Josie’s personality is how long it takes her to accept the good things in life. This one aspect made Josie one of the most relatable characters I’ve ever read. You see, when life has been unkind to you for a long period of time, it is truly very difficult to trust that good things can happen or last. Typically, people who have had a lot of bad in their lives distrust good because they are waiting for the other shoe to drop…and it usually always does. The only way to overcome this distrust is to place all trust in God. This is something that Josie does, over time, and it was such a wonderful journey to watch as she grows from a beaten down, distrustful woman to a woman who trusts God implicitly and accepts her good future. Travis is a wonderful hero. His story also hurt my heart deeply. I felt for him and his four children. Travis’s grief is super real and relatable, and his need to control his heart and hold people at arm’s length is very realistic. I love how he thaws towards Josie over the course of the story. It’s super sweet. I also really appreciate his sense of loyalty, his dedication to working hard for his family, and his great sense of responsibility towards Josie and her baby. Travis is also a protective hero and I LOVE when heroes have a protective streak. It’s wonderfully swoony.

What You Can’t Lose is a remarkable Christian Western. I loved every second of this story and cannot recommend it enough. If you’re a fan of excellently written Westerns with super relatable characters and an engaging plot that will have you turning pages well past bedtime, then this is definitely the book for you!

I borrowed a copy of this novel from Amazon.com via my Kindle Unlimited subscription on November 4, 2025. I am under no obligation to leave a positive review. The opinions expressed in this review are my own.

I was so excited to read this book. It has so many great tropes! Being based in Montana, giving western vines, is what really got me interested!

Marriage of Convenience
Slow Burn
Multiple POV
Found Family
He Falls First
Running from the Law
Hidden Pregnancy
and so many more!

Josie heads to Montana to marry a widowed wheat farmer, who only wants a mother for his children, nothing else. Josie, desperate to escape North Carolina because she fears she is Wanted for her abusive husband’s murder, takes on the challenge.

There are so many ups and downs in this story. Travis is constantly wrestling with his admiration and feels towards Josie as well as his guilt for these feelings as he swore to only love his late wife. Josie is fearful that Travis will reject her because she failed to tell him about her past and about the child she is carrying.

The character growth with both Josie and Travis is amazing! It was so hard to put this book down because I needed to know what was going to happen next. This is not just a cozy romance, there’s a nasty villain. He is fueled by rage and the need for revenge. It is also written in his pov as well, so you take a deep dive into is vile mind.

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The only thing I personally didn’t like was how some of the dialogue seemed a bit “cheesy”. Now I’m not going to say that’s a bad thing necessarily because it’s not; a lot of people don’t mind it and even like it. But for me, I found it threw me off from the story a bit. Probably because I’m not a swooning romantic and I find that sort of thing funny, maybe even a little uncomfortable? Definitely a “me” problem, not this story’s problem!

Overall, I really enjoyed this book! I loved the storyline. I loved the characters. It’s genuinely a feel good story, even with a villain!

I was intrigued from the moment I first heard about What You Can’t Lose. And it was definitely a mail order bride/marriage of connection story unlike those I’ve read before. I honestly couldn’t put it down for more than a minute till I reached the ending.

Josie’s character is very courageous. She finds herself in a desperate place but even when she’s scared and through the lies she genuinely wants to be there for Travis and his children as well as give her child a good life.

Travis was nothing if not a man of integrity and a protector. As a widower he is hurting in more ways than one but he puts his wants aside to do what’s best for his children.

I was expecting but still loved the way that both Josie and Travis go from hurting and not being sure if they can trust each other to finding healing in their faith in God and their choice to risk love again. They take care of each other whilst they learn they must depend on God.
I was not expecting and was extra hooked by the suspenseful twists throughout the book.

I felt the villain was very well written. He was terrible but I thought it was clever on the author’s part because while you don’t like him, like any “good” villain he believes in what he is doing. It’s not as common to get the villain’s POV but it really worked in this story.

Overall What You Can’t Lose is a harrowing journey of the heart from pain and hurt to love, rooted in faith, with action and suspense sprinkled throughout.

Content note: readers be aware that What You Can’t Lose deals with domestic abuse and the villain’s POV is sadistic but none of these are portrayed in a overly graphic manner and the focus is on the healing and redemption God can

Hi, first, thanks to the author for the chance to read What You Can't Lose. I was touched by Josie's strength and her faith through her story and couldn't let the book go, kind of read all day long, so let's go ahead and start with the review.
---
I enjoyed the historical placement; it can be very difficult to manage and create an accurate context for a historical storyline, but it works out well for Josie's characteristics and story.
---
I liked how there's a villain in this book; it's very easy to get very confused by the narrative of "morally grey," and this villain is shown through the moral narrative as teaching about the existence of an abusive pattern in a masculine figure, so I got actually scared and angry about the villain's intentions. My thoughts about him could only be expressed as, He's crazy and a psychopath, so congrats, you have written an excellent villain.
---
Each character brought a different feeling to the chapter or its narrative. In the chapters with interaction with the villain, the book felt like suspense; with the MCs, a very nice touch to their narrative is the physical descriptions of what they're feeling, it helps the reader to empathize with the thoughts of the Josie and Travis.
---
Although, I had my heart pounding like crazy from the tension on some of the chapters, I liked Travis as a MMC, it isn’t the tradicional romance style of "love at first sight" or just lust, it's a love that shows pacience, kindness and grace, I loved this aproach to the trope of marriage of convinience.
---
Josie's character is interesting, since her character trope is to act as delicate and demure, but on reality she is a survivor and stronger because of what she has lived through. I don't like the damsel in distress trope, but, on Josie's story is handled with grace by this amazing author.
---
So, I would totally recommend this if you love the trope and plotline of The Sound of Music and the aesthetic of the series Heart of Dixie. I've loved this read, its a moving story, which I believe might not be just a story for women in the late 1800s. Thank you, Mikayla Robbins, for teaching us a little history with a beautiful book.

This western swept me away from the very first chapters. It’s both heartfelt and suspenseful, weaving together tender moments with gripping tension.

The characters are wonderfully complex—Josie and Travis both wrestle with unresolved guilt and grief, yet their journeys are grounded in learning to trust the Lord’s forgiveness and His will. The author explores hearts struggling with scrupulosity and the pain of misplaced guilt. But ultimately, redemption shines through brokenness.

I was moved by heartfelt emphasis on family love—its value far outweighing any riches the world can offer. The theme of motherhood was particularly moving, especially through its pro-life thread. The exploration of miscarriage grief was raw and heart wrenching, yet ultimately redeemed by the promise of new life.

Adding to the suspense, the antagonist’s perspective is interwoven into the story, creating a sense of danger which kept me constantly on edge.

Overall, this is a story that balances danger and tenderness, heartbreak and hope. It’s one of those rare books that grips you with its suspense but leaves your heart full with its message of love, faith, and family.

What You Can’t Lose by Mikayla Robbins is a heartfelt and emotionally rich western romance that beautifully blends suspense, faith, and redemption. Set against the rugged backdrop of 19th-century Montana near Yellowstone, this story captures both the harsh realities of frontier life and the quiet hope found in unexpected love.

Josie Callahan is a compelling and courageous heroine, fleeing abuse and danger while carrying a child she will do anything to protect. Her decision to pose as a mail-order bride adds gripping tension and emotional depth, especially as she struggles to build a new life on secrets and fear. Travis Blythe, a widowed father unsure of his own worth, is equally engaging, gruff, protective, and deeply human as he wrestles with responsibility, trust, and a guarded heart.

Fans of classic westerns and inspirational romance will find much to love in What You Can’t Lose. It’s a moving tale of bravery, healing, and discovering that even in the hardest moments, love and hope can still take root.

If you are looking for a fluffy read this is not that. It deals with some very heavy subjects(check trigger warnings below) but it is a very beautiful story, with hope and redemption woven all throughout it! Be warned you will probably cry, I know I did.
After finishing this book as a kindle, immediately needed to get a physical copy for my bookshelves🥰

“We can’t understand why these horrible things happen, but we have to trust that God has a plan.”

No words can accurately express the love that I have for this book! There are so many elements that make this the magnificent story that it is. First, the characters that Mikayla Robbins has created are both relatable and written so well that they could be real people that I am interacting with in my life. Secondly, the plot was full of dept as well as twists and turns that had me gasping audibly and actually having to sit and blink at the absolute shock! They were completely unexpected and had me reeling! All in all, I felt like I was walking the roads of Montana through each and every page of this book. I was so sad to be reading the last page because all I wanted was to continue reading about this fantastic journey filled with faith, love, and trust!
Thank you for the arc!

If you love soul-deep stories where you can connect with both the MMC and FMC (their emotional struggles and faith journey) this is the book for you.

I loved the historical setting and the marriage of convenience trope. It helped me escape; the settings were vivid, the characters felt 'alive', and I rooted for them.

The romance was so tastefully done, with plenty of chemistry and a natural, trust-building progression between the characters. The found family (literally!) theme was super heartwarming.

There’s also a good dose of adventure and suspense, with a villain tied to Josie’s past woven in (don’t want to spoil anything lol).

I’ve been blessed to beta read and offer feedback for this novel, and I’m so grateful for the author's trust. This is my honest review!!

This novel moved me in a way I was not expecting. This is a much darker outing than previous novels by this author and yet the light of Christ shined through.

I found myself thinking about how I treat my loved ones, especially my husband. What kind of wife can I be to him even in times of hardship or darkness? What kind of mother do I hope to be someday? These were just two questions that I felt myself diving into throughout the book.

The Coal Miner’s Niece is still my favorite from Robbins, but this was a fantastic start to the western series she is developing. I highly recommend this novel!

I love marriage of convenience/mail order bride stories and this one was both. It was sweet and suspenseful and had me pulling for the MCs the whole way through. I struggled with the lack of communication between the MCs at some points, but not enough for it to ruin the story for me. I loved the relationships that were built between the various members of the family, as found family is another favorite story element.

It was more intense than I had anticipated, but I enjoyed being along for the ride. If you like to feel a bit anxious about just how the story will play out, this book would be a good fit for you.

Such a moving story. I read almost all of it in one night and out loud to my daughter and if I stopped she would say “don’t stop! I need to know what happens.” It was a story of learning to love, learning to forgive, and how to move forward when me blame ourselves. Since this is early America and a Christian fiction story there is mentions of attending church, a few prayers by the characters as they face things but none is in a pushy way and it actually completes the story. It wasn’t quite what I expected but was if that makes sense. But it was so good that I recommend reading and buying it.

Readers of western suspense will probably really enjoy this book, however it was just not right for me. The description of abuse and violence were just too descriptive for me and paired with the villain POV, this book is just not for me. I’m sure there are readers out there for this book, but it’s not for me.

I did love the romance between the main characters, as well as the children and the scenes of everyday life in Montana.

I was graciously gifted an eARC of this book by the author, all thoughts and opinions are my own.

This is one of those stories that stays with you for days and weeks after reading it. It’s the kind of story that keeps you up at night as you ache to see the broken characters find healing in each other and find out what happens. What You Can’t Lose is a masterpiece of tender love found in the worst of circumstances, melting prose and a touch of thrill. It’s everything you want it to be and nothing like you expect!

I have officially found my book crush! Travis Blythe is written so well; with realism and believability as well as the characteristics I hope to one day meet in my husband.
