Whether or not we realize it, many of us who attempt to follow Jesus perceive him as distant and uninterested. We tune out the Gospel stories we've heard so many times because we think we know them already and understand the message they teach: God is friendly, and he likes us okay. We may confess our belief in God the Son, but we've taken our eyes off Jesus.
Meg Hunter-Kilmer helps you see Jesus anew by taking you through his life as told in the gospels, breaking open the familiar and shedding light on the foreign so that you can see the face of Jesus in the pages of Scripture and learn to love him more in his word. Eyes Fixed on Jesus provides biblical context that makes sense of Jesus' actions, cultural tidbits that shed new light on old stories, and connections between the New Testament's miracles and parables and the centuries of revelation found in the Old Testament.
This first volume in a three-part series begins with the Incarnation and runs through Jesus sending out his disciples on mission. This book also includes a study guide to be used for individual or group Bible study.
You need to read this book. Meg Hunter Kilmer did it again but with a book totally fixed on Jesus. I love her Saint books ever so much and I met/fell in love with some of my best friends in that book but this is different. This book didn’t just inspire me in my walk to eternity, this book was an avenue for Jesus Christ to meet me again and again. I kept thinking, I really am getting behind on my book goals for this year, I shouldn’t have started a book that I didn’t want to end. These last few chapters hit me at 10:30-11:30 at night and I’m writing this review just so I can actually go pray at my altar and thank Jesus and talk to Him. I cried several times, especially thinking about Jesus Christ washing our feet/the apostles feet, knowing that it was lower than a slave to even take off a sandal. I was reminded of one of my favorite verses, “you are worth more than many sparrows”. Meg talks about the price that Jesus set on every human soul, everything he would do again for a soul. Even in my, yours, or anyone’s brokenness, He would overcome anything, to have you be His. The Bridegroom, my bridegroom reminded me of who He is, and He used this wonderful book to do it. Thank you, Ms Hunter Kilmer.
The first volume is a treasure and the complete set will be absolutely indispensable for anyone who does regular Scripture study or Lectio Divina. The margin notes and indices alone can send you down a rabbit hole.
Wonderful! It’s rare to come across a book that had so many little gems of contemplation and consideration that I hadn’t thought of before, or, that I had thought of and no one else but Hunter-Kilmer has answered! The book is the first of three volumes (currently not all published as of 2026), with small sections bolstered wjth cross-references to both Old and New Testament verses. It gives lots of the history of why someone may have behaved the way s/he did, or why the Gospel writer chose something, etc. The verses are laid out in such a nice way in the side margins so if you want to pray/think with something more it is so easy to just look up the exact passage—not sort through a bunch of endnotes. The writing is clear and is packed with real scholarship. Because of this, it would make an excellent gift to anyone! I believe middle-schoolers could read it, but certainly high school and up. This would be a confirmation gift probably not everyone else was giving, and would serve as seeds for future prayer and study!
Meg is a spectacular writer, as we all know, and her work has made such a huge difference in my spiritual life. This incredible, beautiful, vital book is her best work yet. Going to do a second read-through with a pencil and highlighter for notes, but this will change how you read the Gospels, crack open Scripture, and may change your entire life.
An incredibly well researched and well written commentary on the Gospels. All the references abd connections to the Old Testament have helped me see more clearly the beauty and absolute genius in God’s story of salvation. I love this book and will be keeping it close by when praying with or studying scripture.
This is an amazing read! I read it straight through, although over weeks, would be great for focusing on various Gospel passages as well. The author draws you into Jesus’ story in such a wonderful way. Highly recommend!
