"History is a maquillage. No homeland here." - Meena Alexander
I'm gonna start this off by stating that the author is Audrey Truschke, since Goodreads still hasn't updated that detail, more than 3 months after release.
Despite being a book of nearly 700 pages, this is by no means an elaborate history of the Indian subcontinent. But with a notes/bibliography section alone approaching 200 pages, this is an excellent unbiased starting point for someone looking to learn the history of this place. ("Whether this is the first book you've ever read on South Asian history or the one-thousandth book, don't let it be your last.")
It works well even as a casual read, in that it isn't bogged down by technical language, which is especially important to me. Recommended reading imo.
