Henley Harkin thought her last year of college would be full of gold medals and good times. Captain of the cross country team, dating the baseball team’s golden boy, and a college degree almost in her grasp. Everything was perfect. Until it wasn’t.
Catching her boyfriend with his pants down wasn’t in the playbook.
Enter Theo Barlowe.
First baseman for the rival school, cute as hell, and the last person her ex would want her tangled up with. Which makes him the perfect revenge.
When Theo suggests they pretend to date, Henley can’t say yes fast enough.
They fake it all. The lingering touches, the heated glances, the toe-curling public kisses.
But what starts as a game of revenge turns reckless fast.
Because he’s not faking at all. He's been waiting in the wings for years, biding his time. And now that Henley’s single? He’s ready to make a play.
While Henley thinks this is just for show, Theo’s out to prove that the chemistry between them is anything but fake... and he won’t stop until she’s his for good.
Previously published in the BABE 2025 Anthology, Henley's full-length story will be available later this year!
Thankyou Lovenotes and Drea D for sending me this ARC ❤️
Fake Dates and Home Plates was exactly the kind of fun, flirty, and spicy sports romance I love diving into!
It’s fast-paced in the best way — no dragging, just vibes, heat, and swoony moments that had me grinning.
The setup? A revenge plan that somehow turns into fake dating and then very real feelings. I was HERE for it. Henley is a confident, driven runner who knows exactly what she wants, and Theo... oh my heart — he’s officially a book boyfriend I’m obsessed with. Sweet, respectful, a little shy, and yes, a virgin MMC! We don’t get that dynamic nearly enough, and it made their connection even more special. Oh yeah.. HE READS!!
There’s plenty of chemistry, lots of humor, and some seriously spicy moments that will keep you turning the pages. It’s a novella, so the pace is quick!
If you’re into sports romances with strong female leads, fake dating, and the kind of MMC that will make your heart melt, add this to your TBR immediately. It’s short, steamy, and so much fun
Short sweet and spicy okaaaayy Drea I was unfamiliar with your game! This was so so good I was giggling and kicking my feet the whole time. No third act breakup no miscommunication just a man obsessed with his woman and a woman who becomes obsessed right back! The romance was authentic and the spice? Lawddd Theo has a mouth on him 🥵
. . .
Thank you to Drea personally for the arc opportunity!
This started off so strongly. Sadly, I was left feeling a little underwhelmed towards the end.
Meet Theo, our dear mmc, who’s had a crush on the fmc since forever. As luck would have it he gets an opportunity to fake-date the fmc. However, I wouldn’t call this book a fake dating romance. They go on like two fake dates and realize their mutual interest for one another soon after. Moreover, while I’m not a big fan of unnecessary break ups 70-80% into the book I expected at least some sort of conflict or challenge that they had to overcome as a couple. (Note to self: Maybe I should keep in mind that this book isn’t outrageously long.)
I don’t have a lot to say about the fmc (I already forgot her name… oops) as she didn’t feel as developed in comparison to Theo. *sigh* Theo *sigh* I am swooning just thinking about him. He reads romance novels and never shies away from letting his vulnerability show through. I thoroughly enjoyed reading about him.
To put it in a nutshell: You will not find the next literary masterpiece within these pages. But that’s also not the point. So, if you want a quick and easy read, this is a safe option for you. :)
Still, huge thanks to Love Notes and Drew Denae for providing me with an arc!
Really enjoyed this short spicy sports romance novella following runner Henley and baseball player Theo. Plenty of spice, wee bit cringe at times and very fast paced! Again almost too fast at times... An act of revenge push the pair together in a fake dating setup that we all love! I loved that the MMC was a virgin, I havent read many books with that sub trope so made a change to have a sexually confident FMC that knows what she wants! Yeah, overall I had a good time and would continue the series. Lucy and Sonny 100% need their own books! Thank you so much to LoveNotesPR and the author for the ARC 🫶
Holy Spicy Spice🌶️🌶️🌶️! OKAY I have to preface Im rounding up for this one. Don't @ me lol. My criteria flexed more for this book once I realized how much Drea packed into this lil over 200 pager! TBH I actually wish it was longer, I wanted more development towards the end with the characters. Like WTH happened with Dakota & his frat bros👀?! It all goes down when Henley finds her bf in a compromising sitch, but at the same time their relationship evolved out of social convenience. After a shitty night she ends up reconnecting with an old high school friend- enter hotty Theo who just so happens to attend the rival college to Henley's. In an act of revenge they agree to "pretend" to date to make her ex jealous. Classic friend to lovers, where Theo's actually been in love with Henley since the time she threw up on his shoes. This book was a quick & fun (pun intended) page turner that was definitely not boring. Personally it was a nice reset book for me before diving into a heavy series. If you like sports, college romances, all about praise kinks, bat play- YES LITERAL & sexy baseball players demonstrating what he learns from romance novels, then this book is for you! The ONLY part that was a lil cringe worthy for me was Theo's sexual experience. And I'll leave that right here. Thanks LoveNotes PR for this ARC it was catchy- get it baseball, catch... ⚾️🧀
A cute romance that had great potential but didn’t hit the spot for me. It had one of my favourite my favourite tropes in a sports romance: fake dating. However, the two MCs only went one one or two fake dates and within 40 pages of their “pact” they confessed their feelings for each other. Because the writing is more descriptive, I was missing a lot of the emotional depth of their relationship and them falling in love felt very quick, so I didn’t feel invested in their relationship.
I did enjoy that our FMC was a cross country athlete which is not a sport talked about in a lot of romance books, and slightly made up for the fact that there isn’t as much baseball in the book as the title leads you to think. My favourite part was the story line around misogyny, and lack of consent in frats which I think is a very important topic.
Baseball guy meets runner girl - this is a sports romance that you won’t want to miss!
When revenge turns into fake dating turns into … 👀👀👀!?!? Henley and Theo are absolutely MADE for each other. I love the support, I love the banter, I love the absolute loyalty. While I do wish that there was more details regarding the fate of the frat house, I love that Theo and Henley are looking toward the future. I also hope some of these side characters get a story because I was definitely getting some vibes!
Overall, I absolutely loved this book. Drea Denae does not miss!
This was a cute , short romance. I enjoyed the writing style and the commentary the author does on misogyny and the toxic-masculinity culture of frat houses. I was expecting the fake-dating to play a bigger role in the story, I think the relationship developed a bit too fast and felt a bit too insta-love for my personal preference. I will say the end made me want to pick up one of the author’s other books that seems to be more my style. Thank you to the author and LoveNotesPR for the ARC!
He falls first and hard! This is a super quick read with a little bit of overthinking, but not in an overwhelming way. Henley is a track star at her college, who just dumped her boyfriend in a very public manner for a very good reason. Theo, who attends the rival college, has been crushing on Henley since high school. Their paths cross and Theo takes this opportunity as fate to make Henley fall in love with him. Which is not hard considering how cute, supportive, encouraging and attentive he is. There are a couple of loose ends that I would have loved to have seen answered. Like what happened to Dakota and the rest of the fraternity, maybe the next book?? I received this as an ARC for my review.
I received this book as an ARC and I’m not being paid for my review.
Theo Barlowe might be the brightest green flag there is! He falls for Henlwy first and most definitely harder! He is lovable and crazy supportive of Henley no matter what she is doing. And the spice! 🌶️🥵 It adds to the experience as we get to see a different side of this couple from how they start in a fake relationship to truly something deeper. And I will be thinking about the baseball bat scene for many moons to come!
-My First Baseball Romance. I really wanted to enjoy this one and had such high hopes for it, but unfortunately this one just did not hit at all for me. Even though there was more I did not like about it, there were still parts of the book that I did enjoy. So, let’s start with the things I did like:
-Theo and Henley’s relationship was CUTE. The way that they picked each other up and helped each other through the worst of times was what I loved the most of all about their relationship. -Theo Barowe. Thank you for being the person that Henley needed when her whole world fell apart. The way you loved her since your freshman year of high school was seriously the sweetest thing. What I loved most about you is your support for Henley. All those times you went to her sporting events and cheered her on?! You definitely had me swooning. But I also really loved your love for romance books. I would definitely say that those came in handy when it came to henley. IYKYK.
-Unfortunately, here were all the things that I did not enjoy about the book. Here we go: -Most of their relationship occurred within the first 15 chapters of this book. I hardly got to see them truly get to know each other because by the time chapter 15 rolled around they had already met, agreed to fake date, figured out neither one was faking anything, and confessed their true feelings for one another. To me, their relationship needed time to grow and slowly develop feelings, not just rush right into everything so quickly. Therefore, not much happened in the second half of the book because most of the best parts had already happened. -The sex scenes literally gave me the ICK. Like ALL of them did. It was just SO BAD. There is a moment with the FMC, MMC, and a bat that will unfortunately be living in my head rent free now. Like the entire time it was happening, I kept thinking about a dog humping a human’s leg. How do I get something like that out of my head?! Someone help me! -Did I enjoy the concept of revenge in the book? Yes. Did I enjoy how it played out? No. -I didn’t get any insight into how they obtained the information to get revenge. And how is it that the only people who were needed to get revenge on said boy were just members of Henley's cross country team?! I mean, it's a university he had to mess with other girls because the one on Henley’s team, that just felt so unrealistic. -I didn’t even get to see how the revenge affected said boy in the end. Like what happened after the revenge happened?! The world will never know and I wanted to know. -Lastly, how would they ever get their revenge at a college world series baseball game. Like that seemed so unrealistic to me. I needed for their revenge to be played out in a better way for sure. -There was like almost zero to no baseball in this romance. I mean we did get a couple of scenes, but it was just short snippets and then the team quickly made it to the college world series. I just wished there would have been some baseball scenes in this book. -To me, it should have been labeled a Cross-Country Romance because there was certainly plenty of that in this story.
-If you have made it this far, great. But overall, this story just was NOT it for me. I hope that you take this information and do with it what you will.
Thank you Drea Danae and Love Notes PR for my ARC of Fake Dates and Home Plates in exchange for my honest review! 3.5/5 ⭐️ 3.75/5 🌶️ What to expect: 🎭 Fake Dating 🤭 Ex's Rival 🔪 Revenge 🥰 He Falls First and Harder ⚾️ Emo Runner Girl x Baseball Boy
I feel like a broken record saying this about most of my recent romance reads, but every woman deserves a Theo! I wanted Theo all to my self, but more than that I cherished him so much I wanted him to get his HEA with Henley. This was definitely a quick fun read so it does not go into as much depth as other romance book, but sometimes you don't want to wait 200 more pages for their HEA. After a bad and very public breakup with her cheating boyfriend Henley runs into Theo who offers to help her get revenge. Not only for her sake, but because they was she was treated makes Theo furious at her ex. The fake dating element didn't last long, and honestly I was so happy. Theo was clearly good for her and I am glad she didn't pretend to not have feelings for him or think that he was only acting for the entire book. How some characters cannot see what is right in front of their eyes can be maddening. Theo and Henley had different backgrounds, but instead of judging or trying to change the other they accepted that those things are what made them who they are so there is no reason to regret anything. Also random note, but everyone deserves Henley parents. They might be some of my favorite parents in a romance novel yet! You need to check out Henley and Theo (and all their dirty talk) and then like me stay tuned because those friends have some interesting stories that Drea Denae needs to start sharing ASAP! Favorite Quotes: "Romance books are the number one selling genre for a reason. Plus, I'm already too good in real life, I like to challenge myself by competing with fictional men." [less than 10% in and I was already a goner] "Being flung around as if I weigh nothing is hot." "I'd be disappointed if you ever thought it was okay to lower yourself for anyone. I'd rather drag myself behind you than watch you being anything less than the magnificent creature you are."
4,5 stars rounded up to 5 stars because Theo was so freaking perfect.
University students romance is not my first pick of choice but when the MMC is obsessed like Theo, I down on it. Theo was everything. So sweet I want to bite him. The fact that he was the inexperienced one was so refreshing to read. He was so obsessed with Henley and it was so cute to read.
---
"If the only way I get to be with Henley Harkin is under false pretenses, then I’ll just thank whatever lucky star gave me the chance. Being in her orbit, in her light, is an adventure worth risking myself for." - Chapter 10, 30%
---
Henley was actually so refreshing to read as FMC. She knew what she liked and didn't shy away to said it. She easily communicated with Theo about everything and that was one of the things I loved about them. In their age, it was easily to miscommunicated but they talked whatever in their mind and that was freaking healthy relationship.
The found-family trope in this book was also so tight and I loved it. I loved how Henley's parents were so supportive to Henley and (eventually) Theo. The band of tight-friendship surrounding Henley and Theo was so funny to read. Can't wait to find out who's the MCs for the next book.
The fake dating side of the story was not the main focus in this book. It actually was very light. The plots about fraternity house were grasping and not entirely finish. I think it would continue in the next books in this series. So yeah, it's HFN type of ending. That's why, like I mentioned before, I can't wait for the next book(s). Whoever the MCs were I think it would be good since this book gave me an amazing reading experience.
Thank you to Drea Denae and Love Notes PR for the ARC.

This book was like the perfect ballgame: fast-paced, full of tension, and impossible to put down once things started heating up. Henley Harkin’s world flips upside down when she catches her boyfriend cheating, and I was cheering when she decided to play hardball with Theo Barlowe, the rival school’s first baseman. Their fake dating plan to rile up her ex felt like the ultimate revenge play, but it didn’t take long before the sparks flying off the page made it clear: the chemistry was real.
Theo was the absolute MVP here. Down bad, dirty-mouthed, but somehow still the sweetest cinnamon roll who made me swoon with every page. I loved that he never played games with Henley’s heart and he knew what he wanted and was ready to prove it. Henley is strong, fiery, and more than capable of running her own race while finding someone who actually shows up in her corner. The toe-curling kisses, the banter, the way Theo is all in from the first pitch is romance gold.
I devoured this book in a single sitting. It’s fun, low-angst, and full of spicy, swoony moments that will have you grinning like you just watched your team hit a walk-off home run. I only wish we got a little more of Henley and Theo’s future after the “game” was over. Still, a solid 4-star read for me, this one’s going straight into my sports romance favorites lineup!
Swoony Line: “I’d rather drag myself behind you than watch you be anything less than the magnificent creature you are.”
I received an ARC copy and wanted to leave an honest review.
This book was so cute! I love it when a guy proposes him and the girl he's had a crush on for years to fake date to make someone jealous. And the fact that he went above and beyond to make sure her cheating ex got what was coming to him was amazing. It was an interesting side plot that I was on the edge of my seat for, and I was so happy with how that ended!
I really liked Theo and Henley; both in their characters and their relationship. Theo is such a little sweetie pie and I love him so much. I am always here for a boy obsessed trope, especially when it's not an overboard obsessed. A lot of times, the boy obsessed trope almost borders on stalking, so I was really glad this was not an extreme case for that trope. And Henley was such a girl boss. I ran cross country in high school, which really helped me connect with her character. I also loved that they had a very open communication in their fake and real relationship, and that neither of them judged each other. Those are like the most important things to have in a relationship (in my opinion), and it was so awesome to see how that was expressed in this book!
The only criticism I have were for the spicy scenes (just not my jam), and that the relationship seemed very fast paced in the book, even though it was not in terms of the actual timeline. There were a few time jumps, which did make sense, but it sped up the plot too much in my opinion.
tropes -boy obsessed -fake dating -revenge -ex's rival -he falls first and harder
thank you to Drea Denae and LoveNotes PR for giving me the opportunity to read this ARC!!
This book was such a fast-paced, entertaining read that I flew through it in one sitting. Henley’s life gets turned upside down when she catches her boyfriend cheating, and her decision to fake date Theo, the rival school’s first baseman, was the ultimate “good for her” moment. The setup was already fun, but what really sold me was how quickly their fake dating chemistry turned into something so real and so swoony.
Theo completely stole the show for me. He’s sweet, respectful, just a little shy, and totally obsessed with Henley in the best way. The virgin hero angle was such a refreshing surprise in a sports romance, and it made every moment between them feel even more genuine and tender. (The fact that he reads? Instant book boyfriend material.) Henley, on the other hand, is confident, fiery, and knows exactly what she wants, and I loved how the two of them balanced each other out.
The novella format makes this one quick and snappy, but it never skimps on the banter, the tension, or the spice. The chemistry between Henley and Theo builds so naturally, and even though I would’ve loved a bit more time with them after the final “game,” the story still felt complete and satisfying.
If you love fake dating, sports romances, and MMCs who are as swoony as they are sweet, this one’s definitely worth picking up. Fun, flirty, and emotional in just the right places—it’s a solid 4-star read that left me smiling all the way through.
ARC Review: • Fake Dates And Home Plates by Drea Denae • Thank you @authordreadenae and @lovenotes.pr for an early readers copy! Henley plus Theo, what can possibly transpire? 3.8 ARC review Fake dates and Home Plates by Drea Denae
First of all, I can not stand Dakota - such a prick. Henley definitely deserves so much better. On the other hand, I absolutely love Theo. He is so sweet, and the way he treats her is everything. Together they just perfect, and their chemistry is amazing.
Another thing I really loved was Henley's parents. They are honestly the coolest parents ever, so fun and supportive. And let's not forget the boys - they're hilarious! I would 100% read their book . Sunny too - that girl is something else, and I am totally for her story as well.
Now about the story itself: the charcters were really good and I enjoy the overall plot, but at times it did feel a little rushed. Honestly, it bored me a bit here and there because it feel like a pretty typical storyline whitout anything super addictive. Still, it was a cute book, really easy to read, and I appreciated the dynamic between the characters.
Ohh, and Bash and Lily? I need ther story right now 😍. I'm beyond excited for that upcoming book.
Also... let's just they this one definitely doesn't lack spice 🔥.
Overall, it turned out to be an enjoyable read, and I'm looking forward to what comes next in the series - especially Bash and Lily's story. Tropes in this book Fake dating Baseball romance He falls first Ex-boyfriend rival If you like these tropes, this book is totally for you! 🤗
Thank you Drea Denae and Love Notes PR for a copy of this book. 💗✨️
The way I loved every single thing about this book! I love how the cheating scandal happened so early on in the book, and how Henley went quite literally running away from it, to only run into someone she went to high school with at a random diner she had never been to before. The someone being Theo, who had taken care of her one night at a party when she was too drunk and didn't even remember the interaction. How she was able to confide in him about what had happened and how down he was for a revenge plot for her. He wanted to do this for her because not only was he already super into her and she was clueless but also because he was on the Baseball team for the rival school of her cheating ex-boyfriend. I love that Henley was way more experienced in the bedroom but Theo never judged her for being that way. Theo is just so wholesome outside of the bedroom, think Golden Retriever, very caring, understanding, always showing up for Henley, accepting her for exactly who she is and taking everything at her own pace. What really made me love Theo was his love for romance novels because ya see...Theo is a virgin but loved reading romance and learning all the fun little tidbits that he could use in the bedroom one day. And when that day got there for Henley and Theo, he was READY to learn. He wanted Henley to teach him exactly what he should be doing to make her happy in the bedroom and wasn't ashamed to ask for tips and tricks to get her there. I loved their love story SO much!
Fake Dates and Home Plates is a baseball, fake , spicy, revenge romance. The story is about a track star Henley and baseball player Theo. Theo has had a crushed on Henley since high school and goes to the rival college of Henley and her baseball player boyfriend go to. One night at a party Henley catches her boyfriend cheating on her. After the fall out of seeing her boyfriend Henley ends up a diner were runs into Theo. The two start the plan to get revenge on Henley’s ex-boyfriend.
The chemistry between Henley and Theo is there for the moment they met. Theo is a good boyfriend. He is supportive and encouraging. Henley is good many character. She is the type of girl that you would want to be friends. Other thing I enjoyed about this story was the side characters especially Henley’s parents. They way they react to founding out about the her cheating boyfriend is great. It’s the type of reactions you would want every parent to have.
In terms of the writing and pace of the story, I thought both were good. I thought the story flowed well. The spicy scenes were well written and didn’t over take the book. Overall, the Fake Dates and Home Plates is good baseball fake romance. The main characters are both likable and relatable. The story will have your attention from the beginning to the end.
I went into this one a little skeptical because I don’t always love the college age crowd, but this one was PERFECT! Theo and Henley are both really mature for their age (seniors in college). Both are serious athletes, with Theo looking to get drafted into pro baseball, and Henley training for marathons in hopes of going to the Olympics eventually.
I loved how Henley was so comfortable with her sexuality without shame. So many books have the girl feeling bad for her experience. Theo was the perfect golden retriever boyfriend!! 😍😍 I loved him so much. And Dakota was just human trash. What a piece of garbage!!
This is a bit of a slow burn, but when they get there, that spice is SPICY 🥵 It had me pausing to curse out loud with the dirty talk!🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️
The only reason this wasn’t quite 5 stars for me was that I felt like the ending was a little anticlimactic. There was a big build up to something, and then it kind of felt glossed over without much detail or resolution. I also wish there would have been a second epilogue maybe 5 years down the road showing their careers and still together. Always can hope for a sequel though! And I can’t wait for the next book to hear about some of the other characters hinted at getting their own stories!
Thanks to LoveNotes PR for letting me read this early!

I loved this book. I was kicking my feet and giggling so much. I was also swooning hard for Theo 😍. Theo was absolute MMC perfection. It’s about time someone made a male main character love romance novels and then acted out what he learned 🥵. Theo’s love for reading was swoon-worthy and that dirty mouth? 😮💨
I love how he’s had a secret crush on Henley since high school. I love how badass Henley is. I love how this started out as fake dating to get revenge on her ex, but they figured out their feelings quickly. The way they defiled her ex’s bat 😮💨 IYKYK.
Absolute favorite college sports romance book to date 🥰
✨Favorite quotes✨
“Romance books are the number one selling genre for a reason. Plus, I’m already too good in real life, I like to challenge myself by competing with fictional men.”
“I’d be disappointed if you ever thought it was okay to lower yourself for anyone. I’d rather drag myself behind you than watch you be anything less than the magnificent creature you are.”
I scowl. “In your dreams, Baseball Boy.” “You’re in all my dreams, Getaway Girl.”
Okay, I picked this up expecting a fun, spicy college sports romance…and that’s exactly what I got. Henley is my kind of heroine: fierce, focused, and absolutely done with being walked over. When her “perfect” relationship implodes in the most public way possible, she’s equal parts furious and hilarious, and watching her take back control made me clap from the couch.
Enter Theo: the sweet, quietly obsessed boy-next-field player who’s been waiting in the wings. He is textbook book-boyfriend material; supportive, a little shy, and utterly devoted. Bonus points that he’s a romantic-reader MMC (yes, please). Their fake-dating setup delivers the vibes: lingering looks, toe-curling kisses, and some very spicy moments that made me blush and grin in equal measure.
That said, and this is why I’m giving it three-and-a-half stars; the novella moves fast. Like, sprint-to-the-finish-line fast. If you love quick reads that give you all the feelings without the slow-burn, you’ll adore this. If you crave deep emotional build or slow-blooming chemistry, you might feel slightly shortchanged; a few scenes could’ve used more breathing room to let the emotional stakes land.
I also appreciated the book tackling real issues — misogyny and consent problems on campus — which added teeth beneath the fluff. And while the title promises baseball, the story leans more into cross-country and team friendships (not a complaint if you’re here for Henley and her squad).
Bottom line : Fast, flirty, and very fun. Perfect for a lazy afternoon when you want heat, heart, and a quick HEA. Add Theo to your list of men I would very much like to befriend (and keep).
After a devastating betrayal by her boyfriend, Henley literally runs into Theo, a kind face from her high school days. In a twist of fate, Theo admits he's had a crush on her for years and, seeing her pain, offers to step in as her fake boyfriend to help her save face. Theo is the ultimate green-flag hero. He's thoughtful, supportive, and completely devoted to Henley's well-being from the start. The reveal that he's a virgin was a shocking yet wonderfully tender layer to his character that made their developing connection feel even more special. Henley is the perfect counterpart—a strong and vulnerable FMC who is reeling from heartbreak but never loses sight of her own long-term goals. She wants to support Theo, but she is her own person first, and I loved that about her. But what starts as a simple fake-dating arrangement takes a dark turn when they discover a fraternity is running a disgusting "game" that involves violating women. Their mission to expose the frat adds a layer of suspense and purpose that elevates the entire story. If you love sports romance, fake dating with real feelings, and a hero who will do anything for his girl, you need to read this. The found family vibes are immaculate, and I am already desperate for Bash and Lily's and Sunny and Lukas's books!
Cross country running, baseball and a bunch of subverted tropes? Yes please!
Henley is a cross country runner in her senior year. After catching her baseballer boyfriend cheating on her, she bumps into Theo - a high school friend who happens to be a player on an opposing team. An avid romance reader, he suggests his favourite trope to get back at her ex - fake dating.
I think the things I enjoyed most about this book are Theo’s character, and the trope subversions. Theo is a genuinely good guy of the green flag variety. He’s a completely inexperienced lover (trope flipped!), thinks about the consequences of his actions (no violence as a solution) and does not consider her sport less valid than his. He washes her hair, takes her to a bookstore for a date and happily wears pink and black (her favourite combo) at her meets.
The book is slow burn, completely open door with many scenes, including an unconventional use of a baseball bat. It deals with cheating, online harassment, predatory nature of the “boys will be boys” variety in a fraternity and slut shaming.
This will be the first in a series, and I look forward to getting to know some of these characters more. Fans of sports romance and rom coms will enjoy this easy read.
ARC Review for ‘Fake Dates and Home Plates’ by Drea Denae.
Omg I loved reading this book I just devoured it in a few hours🫣🤩 The storyline was so smooth and I really enjoyed the story build up. It is a sports romances, but also has some suspense, which actually really happens in real life. Hensley is such a strong woman! Love her perseverance and strength! And with the right person beside her, that gentle loving side comes out with a touch of kink with the help of Theo 🫣 Theo, oh my what can I say. if I were single and way way younger, I would have loved to meet a guy like him. Strong yet gentle, romantic yet dirty. And loved that twist of him being …. Awwwww all for her. The universe really had them lined up meant to be❤️ And their 🌶️ delicious, starts teasing slow burn till finally 🤯 The friends written around it was really nice to read, everybody came out for each other🥰 like a good friend base is supposed to be.
If you like sports romances with a good storyline and even some suspense, definitely get this in your TBR! I cannot wait to read about the other friends🤩 5/5⭐️ well deserved ❤️❤️
I want to be Henley when I grow up. She's confident and competent, passionate and dedicated. I love that she's not afraid to ask for what she wants and track it down if need be. She's willing to take charge, but considers those around her at all times. She's forgiving and mature, but won't sacrifice herself to please others. Overall 12/10. Theo compliments her perfectly. I don't love the "I've pined over you for years, thank you for noticing me" trope, but it was well done here and not as lost puppy as it sometimes feels. I love how protective he is over Henley (even though she absolutely does not need it 99% of the time). That said, he was a little bit too "whatever you want is fine" for my taste
I enjoyed the secondary plotline of I'm honestly really excited for the rest of this serious because I am in love with several of the characters that were introduced in this book!
Fake Dates and Home Plates is a cute college sports romance with a fun fake-dating premise. Henley, captain of the cross-country team, thinks she has her last year of college perfectly mapped out… until catching her golden-boy boyfriend cheating sends everything off the rails. Enter Theo, the rival school’s first baseman who’s been waiting for his shot with her for years.
I really liked that Henley was a cross-country runner — it’s not a sport we often see in romance, and the team spirit and loyalty came through nicely. I also appreciated the way some of the male characters stood up to defend women against assault, which added depth and a positive message.
Theo was very sweet and easy to root for, but the fake dating setup didn’t last long — after just a couple of fake dates, the story shifted straight into real dating. Because of that, the romance felt a bit more “told” than “shown,” and I sometimes missed the emotional build-up. The revenge element also faded quickly; the ex who set everything in motion was basically forgotten by the end.
That said, if you enjoy sports romance, fake dating with a twist, and a “happy for now” ending, this one delivers a light and easy read.
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ Tropes: * He’s a virgin * They both love dirty talk * He’s the rival team baseball star * Fake dating * Revenge dating * He’s had a secret crush on her
Thank you to Love Notes and Drea Danae for this eARC! It’s perfect for baseball playoffs and fall time!
Theo and Henley are great together! They both fall pretty fast, but I would too with a guy like Theo! He’s the softer one in the relationship, while she’s fiery and so confident. I really liked that Theo was not only a virgin waiting for the right girl, but also studying up by reading romance novels! A true book boyfriend 🫠
They both support each other, accepting of their worries and their own dreams, and work so well together. They’re so spicy and sweet together, and they quickly find out how much they have in common (especially how much they both like dirty talk! 🤭). This made their HEA a swoony and sweet ending for them. I also enjoyed the additional plot of how awful her ex and his teammates were, which made it a good emotional ending too. I just wanted a little more at the end to see how everything worked out for that, and how things were for them after college.
