Naples and its environs c. 1600, its topography and plan, monuments, institutions, churches, monasteries, palaces, and fortresses; with discussions of the city’s history, listings of church and secular officials, noble families, local saints and cult centers from late antiquity through the sixteenth century. Illustrated with maps, paintings, engravings, and drawings of the period, including the Tavola Strozzi.Includes introductions to the History and Art History of Naples, bibliography, notes, and five new maps.
As a primary, early 1600s travel guide, it's fascinating. The three historian/translators each wrote a forward, giving a great historical background that was, in many ways, more helpful than the book. And their bibliography looks to be equally rich.
I bought it as an e-book and it's just not built for that. Some of it is poor formatting, but most if it is because I want to look at included maps or flip between multiple sections. When it comes time to re-read it, I'll be buying the paper copy.
