About the author

Vasudhendra (ವಸುಧೇಂದ್ರ) was born at Sandur in Ballari district, Karnataka. After working as a software professional for more than twenty years, Vasudhendra now runs his own publication house, Chanda Pustaka, which publishes and encourages new writing in Kannada and has instituted the Chanda Pustaka Award which recognizes young short story writers. He is also associated with local support groups for LGBT individuals. The author of thirteen books in Kannada, that have sold over 80,000 copies, Vasudhendra has won many literary awards, including the Kannada Sahitya Academy Book Prize, the Da Raa Bendre Story Award and the Dr U.R. Ananthamurthy Award.

ಎರಡು ಮಧ್ವ ಕುಟುಂಬಗಳ ಜೀವನಗಾಥೆ . ವಿವಿಧ ಹೆಣ್ಣು ಪಾತ್ರಗಳ ನಿರೂಪಣೆ ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿ ಮೂಡಿ ಬಂದಿದೆ . ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಕಥಾವಸ್ತುವಿದ್ದು . ವೇಗವಾಗಿ ಓದಿ ಮುಗಿಸಬಹುದಾದ ಕೃತಿ ಇದು .

Harichitta Satya was one of the quickest and most engaging reads of the year for me. From the very first page to the last, Vasudhendra sir’s signature style shines through — his subtle sarcasm hidden like little gems throughout the narrative. The concept of destiny has rarely been portrayed this wittily or insightfully.

The story revolves around Padmavathi, fondly called Paddi, and her journey to find a suitable life partner as per her ideals. Spanning nearly a decade, the tale beautifully captures the nuances of tradition, belief, and societal expectations within the Brahmin community — presented in a way that’s both comic and piercingly honest.

Much like MANISHE, this book reflects Vasudhendra’s keen observation of human behavior and cultural paradoxes. Overall, Harichitta Satya is a refreshing, thought-provoking read that kept me hooked till the end.

ಕೆಲವೊಂದು ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳೇ ಹಾಗೆ ಅದರ ಶೀರ್ಷಿಕೆಯಿಂದಲೇ ನಮ್ಮನ್ನು ಸೆಳೆಯುತ್ತದೆ. ಹರಿಚಿತ್ತ ಸತ್ಯ ಎಂಬ ಪುರಂದರದಾಸರ ಕೀರ್ತನೆಯ ಸಾಲನ್ನು ಶೀರ್ಷಿಕೆಯನ್ನಾಗಿಸಿರುವ ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ನನ್ನನ್ನು ಆಕರ್ಷಿಸಿಸಲು ಇದೇ ಕಾರಣ. ಇದರ ಜೊತೆಗೆ ವಸುಧೇಂದ್ರ ಅವರ ಲೇಖನಿಯಿಂದ ಮೂಡಿಬಂದಿರುವ ಕಾದಂಬರಿ ಎಂಬ ಮತ್ತೊಂದು ಆಕರ್ಷಣೆ. ಈ ಕಾದಂಬರಿ ಉತ್ತರ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕದ ಮಾಧ್ವ ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣ ಕುಟುಂಬಗಳ ಸುತ್ತ ೭೦-೮೦ರ ದಶಕದಲ್ಲಿ ನಡೆಯುವ ಒಂದು ಸಣ್ಣ ಕಥೆಯನ್ನು ಹೇಳುತ್ತದೆ. ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯ ನಾಯಕಿಯಾದ ಪದ್ಮಾವತಿ ಅಥವಾ ಪದ್ದಿಯನ್ನು ತಾಯಿಯಾದ ರಂಗಮ್ಮ ಬಳ್ಳಾರಿಯಿಂದ ಸಂಡೂರಿಗೆ ಹೆಣ್ಣು ತೋರಿಸಲು ಹೊರಟಾಗ ಕಥೆ ಪ್ರಾರಂಭವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಸಂಡೂರಿನ ಹುಡುಗ ಹಾಗೂ ಈ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯ ನಾಯಕ ಎಂದು ಕರೆಯಬಹುದಾದ ರಾಘವೇಂದ್ರನನ್ನು ಪದ್ದಿ ಒಪ್ಪದೆ ಬಳ್ಳಾರಿಗೆ ಹಿಂದಿರುಗುತ್ತಾಳೆ. ಇಲ್ಲಿಂದ ಕಾದಂಬರಿ ಎರಡು ಟ್ರ್ಯಾಕ್ ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಸಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಇತ್ತ ಪದ್ದಿ ಬಳ್ಳಾರಿಗೆ ವಾಪಸ್ಸು ಬಂದ ಮೇಲೆ ಯಾವುದೋ ಅನಾಮಧೇಯ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಯಿಂದ ಬಿಡಿಸಲ್ಪಟ್ಟ ಅವಳ ಸುಂದರವಾದ ಚಿತ್ರವಿರುವ ಕಾಗದದ ಸುರುಳಿಗಳು ಪ್ರತಿದಿನವೂ ತನ್ನ ಮನೆಯಂಗಳದಲ್ಲಿ ಬಿದ್ದಿರುವುದನ್ನು ಗಮನಿಸಿ, ಆ ಚಿತ್ರಗಳನ್ನು ಬಿಡಿಸಿರುವ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಯು ಯಾರೆಂದು ತಿಳಿಯಲು ಹಾಗೂ ಭೇಟಿ ಮಾಡಲು ಇನ್ನಿಲ್ಲದಂತೆ ಹಪಹಪಿಸ ತೊಡಗುತ್ತಾಳೆ. ಅತ್ತ ಸಂಡೂರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ರಾಘವೇಂದ್ರನಿಗೆ ಸುಧಾ ಎಂಬ ರಾಮಸಾಗರದ ಹುಡುಗಿಯೊಂದಿಗೆ ವಿವಾಹ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತದೆ. ಪದ್ದಿ ಹುಡುಕುತ್ತಿರುವ ಆ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿ ಯಾರು? ರಾಘವೇಂದ್ರನ ವೈವಾಹಿಕ ಜೀವನ ಹೇಗೆ ಸಾಗುತ್ತದೆ? ಇಷ್ಟಕ್ಕೂ ಆ ಹರಿಚಿತ್ತದಲ್ಲಿ ಏನಿದೆಯೆಂದು ತಿಳಿಯಬೇಕಾದರೆ ಪುಸ್ತಕವನ್ನೇ ಓದಬೇಕು.


ಕಾದಂಬರಿ ಒಂದು ರೀತಿ predictable ಆಗಿದ್ದು ಮತ್ತು ಅಷ್ಟು ಹೊಸತೆನಿಸದಿದ್ದರೂ, ಮನ‌ಸ್ಸಿಗೆ ಮುದ ಖಂಡಿತವಾಗಿಯೂ ನೀಡುತ್ತದೆ. ಇದಕ್ಕೆ ಕಾರಣ ವಸುಧೇಂದ್ರರವರು ಎಳೆ ಎಳೆಯಾಗಿ ಬಿಚ್ಚಿಟ್ಟಿರುವ ಹಲವಾರು ವಿಚಾರಗಳು. ಅಜ್ಜ-ಅಜ್ಜಿಯರ ಅಥವಾ ಮತ್ತಷ್ಟು ಹಿಂದಿನ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಆಚರಣೆಯಲ್ಲಿದ್ದ ಅಹಿತಕರ ಪದ್ಧತಿಗಳು, ಹೆಣ್ಣು ಮಕ್ಕಳ ಉಡುಗೆ-ತೊಡುಗೆ, ಶಿಕ್ಷಣ-ಕಲಿಕೆ, ಹವ್ಯಾಸಗಳಿಗಿದ್ದ ಅಡ್ಡಿ-ಅಡಚಣೆಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಹೆಣ್ಣು ಮಗುವನ್ನು "ಹೊರೆ" ಎಂದು ಭಾವಿಸುವ ಮನೋಭಾವ ಕೇವಲ ಒಂದು ೩೦-೪೦ ವರ್ಷಗಳ ಹಿಂದೆ  ಕೂಡ ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಪ್ರಚಲಿತದಲ್ಲಿತ್ತೆಂದರೆ ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಆಶ್ಚರ್ಯವೇ ಆಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬರುವ "ವಧು ಪರೀಕ್ಷೆ" ಸಂದರ್ಭವನ್ನು ಓದುವಾಗ ನಗು ತರಿಸುವುದಲ್ಲದೇ ಸಿಟ್ಟನ್ನೂ ತರಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಇದರೊಂದಿಗೆ, ಮದುವೆ ಸಂದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲಿ ವರನ ಬಂಧು-ಬಳಗಗಳು ತೋರುವ ದರ್ಪ-ದೌಲತ್ತುಗಳು ಮತ್ತಷ್ಟು ಕೋಪ ಬರಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಇವೆಲ್ಲವನ್ನು ಓದುವಾಗ ಈಗಲೂ ಸಹ ಇಂತಹ ಆಚರಣೆಗಳು ಜೀವಂತವಾಗಿರಬಹುದೆ ಎಂಬ ಭಯವನ್ನು ಮೂಡಿಸಿದರೂ, ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯ ಕೊನೆ ಹಂತದಲ್ಲಿ ಬರುವ  ಕೆಲವು ಸನ್ನಿವೇಶಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಮುಂದೆ ಆಗಬಹುದಾದ ಹಲವು ಬದಲಾವಣೆಗಳು ಸೂಚ್ಯವಾಗಿವೆ. 


ಲೇಖಕರು ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾನಸಿಕ ಸಮಸ್ಯೆಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ಸಮಾಜ ಅಂಟಿಸಿರುವ stigmaವನ್ನು ನೈಜವಾಗಿ ಚಿತ್ರಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಹಾಗೆಯೇ, 'Don't judge a book by it's cover' ಎಂಬ ಸಂದೇಶವನ್ನೂ ಲೇಖಕರು ಕೊಡಲು ಪ್ರಯತ್ನಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ವಸುಧೇಂದ್ರರ ಹುಟ್ಟೂರಾದ ಸಂಡೂರು ಮತ್ತು ಅಲ್ಲಿನ ಸುತ್ತ ಮುತ್ತಲಿನ ನಿಸರ್ಗವನ್ನು ಸುಂದರವಾಗಿ ವರ್ಣಿಸುವುದರೊಂದಿಗೆ ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾತ್ರವೇ ದೊರೆಯುವ ಬಿಕ್ಕಿ ಹಣ್ಣಿನಂತಹ ವಿವಿಧ ಹಣ್ಣುಗಳನ್ನು ಪರಿಚಯಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಬಳ್ಳಾರಿ ಕೋಟೆ, ಹಂಪಿ, ಗೋಳ ಗುಮ್ಮಟ ಮುಂತಾದ ಪ್ರೇಕ್ಷಣೀಯ ಸ್ಥಳಗಳ ವರ್ಣನೆ ಕಣ್ಣಿಗೆ ಕಟ್ಟುವಂತಿದೆ. ಉತ್ತರ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕದಲ್ಲಿ ಬಾಳಿ-ಬದುಕಿದ ಹಲವಾರು ಯತಿಗಳ

ಕುರಿತು ಸಹ ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕದಿಂದ ತಿಳಿಯಬಹುದು. "ನಮ್ಮ ದೇಶದಾಗೂ ಕುಡಿಯೋ ನೀರು ಮಾರಲಿಕ್ಕೆ ಶುರು ಮಾಡಿದ್ರೆ ಗತಿಯೇನೆ?"  ಪದ್ದಿ ತನ್ನ ಗೆಳತಿಯನ್ನು ಕೇಳುವ ಈ ಮಾತು ಇನ್ನಿಲ್ಲದಂತೆ ಕಾಡುತ್ತದೆ. ಹಾಗೆಯೇ, ಗಡಿ ಪ್ರದೇಶವಾದ ಬಳ್ಳಾರಿಯಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಭಾಷಾ ಸಮಸ್ಯೆಯು ಕೊಂಚ ಬೇಸರವನ್ನು ಮೂಡಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಕಾದಂಬರಿ ಬಹುತೇಕ ಉತ್ತರ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ಭಾಷೆಯಲ್ಲಿದ್ದರೂ ಬಹಳ ಸುಲಭವಾಗಿ ಅರ್ಥಮಾಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳಬಹುದು.  


 ವೈಯಕ್ತಿಕವಾಗಿ ನನಗೆ ಅತಿ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕದಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಿಯವಾದ ಸಂಗತಿ ಲೇಖಕರು ಮಾಡಿರುವ ಪಾತ್ರ ಚಿತ್ರಣ. ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬರುವ ಪ್ರತಿಯೊಂದು ಪಾತ್ರಕ್ಕೂ ವಸುಧೇಂದ್ರರವರು ಜೀವತುಂಬಿ ಸಮವಾದ ಒತ್ತನ್ನು ನೀಡಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯ ಒಂದೊಂದು ಪಾತ್ರದ ಕುರಿತು ಒಂದು ಪ್ರತ್ಯೇಕ ಪ್ರಬಂಧ ಬರೆಯಬಹುದೆಂದರೆ ಬಹುಶಃ ಅತಿಶಯೋಕ್ತಿ ಆಗಲಾರದು. ಪ್ರತಿ‌ ಪಾತ್ರಕ್ಕಿರುವ ಆಳ ಅಷ್ಟು! ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಓದಿ ಮುಗಿಸುವಷ್ಟರಲ್ಲಿ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಪಾತ್ರಗಳು ನಮ್ಮ ಮನವನ್ನು ಮುಟ್ಪುವುದರೊಂದಿಗೆ, ಅವರೆಲ್ಲರೂ ನಮಗೆ ಚಿರಪರಿಚಿತ ಎನ್ನಿಸಿ ಅವರೊಡನೆ ಮಾತಡಬೇಕೆನ್ನಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.


ಹೀಗೆ ಮತ್ತಷ್ಟು ಸೂಕ್ಷ್ಮ ವಿಚಾರಗಳನ್ನು ತಿಳಿಯಾದ ಹಾಸ್ಯದ ಮೂಲಕ ತಿಳಿಸುವ ಹರಿಚಿತ್ತ ಸತ್ಯ ಒಂದು black and white ಚಿತ್ರವನ್ನು ನೋಡಿದ ಅನುಭವವನ್ನು ನೀಡುತ್ತದೆ.

Vasudendra as such stays to his typical style of writing with the brilliant characterization of North Karnataka, dealing with the Brahminical culture, patriarchy, inner desires and social stigma on mental health, early widowhood. The portrayal of the characters syncs in with the story so well that post chapter 7, it was a seamless non-stop read for me with the climax being intense which makes one to think retrospectively. Reminds me of a dialogue from Dia movie "life is full of surprises and miracles". You feel for the characters and for sure it's a worthy read.
P.S: ಪರಭಾಷೆ ಓದುಗರ ಗಮನ ಸೆಳೆಯಲು ಉದ್ದೇಶಪೂರ್ವಕವಾಗಿ ಆಂಗ್ಲ ಭಾಷೆಯಲ್ಲೇ ಪುಸ್ತಕವನ್ನು ಸಮೀಕ್ಷಿಸಿದೆ.

ವಸುಧೇಂದ್ರರ ಕಥಾ ನಿರೂಪಣೆ ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಸೊಗಸಾಗಿದೆ. ಕಥಾ ವಸ್ತು ತುಂಬಾ ಹೊಸದು ಎನಿಸದಿದ್ದರೂ, ಕಥೆಯನ್ನು ಹೇಳಿರುವ ರೀತಿ ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿದೆ. ಉತ್ತರ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕದ ಸೊಗಡನ್ನು ಓದಲು ಇಷ್ಟ ಪಡುವವರಿಗೆ ಹರಿ ಚಿತ್ತ ಸತ್ಯ ಒಂದು ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಓದು.

Vasudhendra is a brilliant Saahiti. He knows how to capture readers' attention and holds them till the end of the story. I like this book, though the story lacks depth but characters are built nicely. Few important questions remain unanswered but definitely readable book
