Whew. Tracing a Kidnapper’s Trail is intense, no matter which angle of the story is your favorite – the emotional layers, the high-stakes suspense, or the friends-to-enemies-to-love romance. Don’t worry, I’ll talk about the deeper threads and the nail-biting suspense in a minute but first I’m gonna skip straight to the romance element of the plot because … swoon. Still fanning over here. Sparks FLY right away between Marlee and Hunter, in large part given the tragic reason these longtime friends haven’t spoken in years. It doesn’t hurt either that both have tendencies that clash – Marlee’s to not back down in the face of a challenge or a job to do, and Hunter’s to rescue people in need… especially if those are people he cares about. But ohhhhhhh y’all. When they each let their guard down, even just slightly, around their long-repressed feelings for the other, those sparks become the most delicious kind and lead to some really yummy kisses. Yep, I’m still fanning.
As you might guess from my first paragraph, Marlee and Hunter have some really emotion-laden layers to explore. Not just their history with each other and not just where life has taken them from there, separately. But also what this investigation uncovers. I felt the depth of this story in my own heart, thanks to author Katy Lee’s compelling writing and stellar character development. And you can’t really take those emotions away from the suspense in this one either because they are indelibly sewn together. One raises the stakes of the other, and vice versa. Even the faith threads are solidly linked with all of the above as Lee points reader to Jesus and the gospel clearly (but not preachy) and in a way that fits perfectly into the story. And then, on top of the multi-threaded storytelling and the human characters I cared passionately about, Lee gives us Hunter and Marlee’s amazing K-9 partners too. I always love books that feature dogs with big personalities, and I routinely cheered for both Libby and Gustav in this one. Their finely honed tracking skills, their heartwarming loyalty to their handlers (Hunter and Marlee, respectively), and their demonstrations of exceptional courage do their real-life K-9 officer counterparts proud.
Bottom Line: There were several moments in Tracing a Kidnapper’s Trail by Katy Lee where I had to remind myself to keep breathing because either a) Marlee or Hunter or their dogs or the little girl they were trying to find were in grave danger, b) my heart got tangled up in the implications of one of several stunning revelations, c) Marlee and Hunter were caught up in another swoony kiss, or d) all of the above. Lee definitely keeps us glued to the page as the story unfolds at a fast pace, and I happily hung on every word, every twist, every layer, every undercurrent, and yes, every kiss. This is exactly the kind of romantic suspense I love – action-packed, emotionally rich, faith-grounded, and sparking with just the right amount of swoon. Buckle up and clear your schedule, y’all, because once you start, you are not going anywhere until the last page.

Tracing a Kidnapper's Trail is the first book I have read by Katy Lee, although it isn't the first book I have read in the K-9 Search and Rescue series. And I certainly want to read more of both!
This is an action-packed page turner, which made me not want to put it down! Yes, that meant lost sleep. LOL It is full of suspense, danger, betrayal, and, yes, dead bodies...and one scared little girl.
The growing relationship between Marlee and Hunter becomes undeniable. Each one is protective of the other, and of that scared little girl for whom they are searching. The action is nonstop until the very end, so hang on to your seat when you start reading!
If you enjoy Christian suspense with a touch of romance, you will certainly want to add this one to your TBR list.
I have only recently began listening to books. This one's audio was done extremely well. I liked the different voices and could tell who was speaking easily. The main characters male voice was the only one a little odd. The voice made him seem like an old man. That said, I would still listen to another book read by this reader. The story itself was great! It flowed quickly and had great action. I especially liked the tracking dogs and the personalities they had. Great twists and turns with entertaining personalities and a creative storyline.
I would like to thank the publisher and Netgalley for the temporary ARC digital copy that I read and left my personal thoughts on.
TRACING A KIDNAPPER’S TRAIL by Katy Lee is the exceptional, suspense-filled story of Hunter Shelton, owner of West Texas Hill Country Search and Rescue Unit, and his search and rescue K-9 Libby and DEA Agent Marlee Price and her narcotic K-9 Gustav brought back together in an intense search for a missing little girl and an attempt to bring down a major drug ring.
Hunter and Libby are called to a crime scene to find his ex-fiancé the murder victim and her little girl missing. From the girl’s age, he wonders if she might be his daughter, which intensifies his need to find her. He knows his best chance of doing that might depend on the one person that doesn’t want to hear from him – Marlee, but he calls her for help just the same.
Marlee became a DEA agent to try to rid the world of drug dealers, like the one that lead to her brother’s demise. Hunter is the man she had once dreamed of marrying someday, but that all changed because she holds him chiefly responsible for her brother’s death. The last person she expected a call from, waking her in the wee hours, was Hunter with a request for help. She only agreed to meet him because to the missing child and a big possibility of a connection to drug dealers.
Can Hunter and Marlee put their past behind them in order to work together professionally? Or is it possible that working together might force them to face the past and find peace with it? Will the possible parentage of the missing girl put even more urgency into the search? Can the different strengths of the K-9’s be even a great assist to them in their hunt? Can they survive each assault to their bodies and keep the search moving forward?
TRACING A KIDNAPPER’S TRAIL grabs you from page one - not only with the danger, but with the realization of what is at stake. Hunter and Marlee’s initial confrontation, due to past events, is overshadowed by the need for each one’s special skills needed for this case makes them a duo to be reckoned with. This story is full of turns and surprises. Just when you think you have things figure out, you go “WOW, didn’t see that coming!”. Katy Lee gives us a can’t put down story with devastating events, surprise findings, danger, suspense, second chances, sweet romance, family, forgiveness and wraps it all in a wonderful thread of faith. TRACING A KIDNAPPER’S TRAIL is emphatically a FIVE STAR book that I highly recommend to everyone!
While TRACING A KIDNAPPER’S TRAIL is the 18th book in the K-9 Search and Rescue series, it can definitely be read as a standalone book, as all the books in this series are,

Tracing a Kidnapper's Trail K-9 Search and Rescue #18 By Katy Lee
Hunter Shelton's made mistakes in the past and he is filled with regrets about what he should have done differently. But he's turned his life around and hopes that his changed heart is a reflection of that change. But when he is called to a crime scene his past is there waiting for him. His ex-fiancée is the victim and her daughter is missing. Donna is dead and Nancy Sue may be in the hands of drug runners. But to find Nancy Sue before it is too late, Hunter reaches out to Marlee Price, who blames Hunter for the death of her brother. But Marlee is the best, and only the best has a chance at saving one little girl from these dangerous people.
Yeah, Hunter has a load of guilt he's dealing with, and this case bringing back old feelings and memories. But he has a job to do, and that includes keeping DEA Agent Marlee Price and her K-9 partner, Gustav, alive. It's hard to do with a bounty on their heads, but Hunter refuses to not be there for Marlee in her hour of greatest need. If only she could see past the anger and bitterness of the past.
This is a story of second chances and the healing power of accepting the redemptive power of God's love. But like everything, unless we accept the offered gift, we cannot enjoy the freedom it gives our heart and soul.
As this is an offering from Love Inspired Suspense, you are assured of a book with a satisfying ending and content that won't leave you cringing. Hunter and Marlee are flawed and have to deal with the choices they have both made, but the story offers hope even at their darkest, most desperate hour.
I was provided a complimentary copy with no expectations. All thoughts expressed are my own.
P.S. I will admit some of the subject matter was more disturbing than most LIS books I have previously read, but I believe it was handled in a sensitive way that did not offend.
I always enjoy these romantic suspense novellas from Love Inspired. They're fun, twisty, adventures that don't take too long to consume. I loved the setting and, of course, the dogs. I thought it was neat to see the different roles the dogs performed in their different fields. I loved how the writer brought everything together at the climax, and I loved Hunter's journey to overcome his past. There were a few elements of the story that I felt moved too quickly, but I'm sure that's due to the brevity of the Love Inspired line.
The story had some good danger scenes, though the takedown of the bad guy seemed a little too easy. I would have like there to be a little more of a struggle. I always squirm a little when small children are in danger, but I appreciated the author kept the little girl "safe" throughout the story, though I felt like the child behaved too mature for her age. I'm not a big fan of stories involving drug operations. It's just not something I like to think about. I enjoyed the twists, though I admit I saw them coming. These characters definitively took a licking and kept on ticking. Maybe a little more than realistic, but it's fiction, so let's leave it at that. One of my favorite elements was Hunter's recollections about the change Jesus had made in him. Jesus is often left out of Love Inspired novels, and so that was a breath of fresh air.
Overall, this was a nice romantic suspense from a new-to-me author, and I recommend it for anyone who enjoys these types of stories or is looking for something that is an easy, less time-consuming read. Even with the negatives, I believe this story whole-heartedly deserves four stars.

This is an action packed Christian suspense audiobook, with some romance, that will take the listener on a rollercoaster ride filled with unexpected twists and turns. Hunter Shelton and his K-9 Libby work as a team in the local search and rescue department. When Hunter is called to a crime scene, he realizes the murdered victim is his ex, a woman he hasn’t seen in over 5 years. The woman’s five year old daughter has been kidnapped by members of the local drug cartel, which makes him wonders if the child is his. DEA Agent Marlee Price and her narcotis K-9 are called to help with the search of the criminals, the drugs and the child. Hunter also has a history with this woman and her deceased brother. But all misgivings are put aside in the name of justice, and finding the child. The danger increases, and in order to rescue the child these two must put aside their past. In doing so, they both realize the misunderstandings they had held on to. In the end, will they survive the danger and be able to rescue the little girl? Is the child Hunter’s? Will Hunter show Marlee that God has always been there for her? And lastly, will they find their HEA? This is a story about redemption, hope, faith, and second chances in life and love. The narrator, Emily Sutton-Smith did a good job of bringing the story to life. I was entrusted a copy of this audiobook by Netgalley, Harlequin Audio and Harper Collins. The opinions expressed are solely my own.
Solving an abduction case means a relentless K-9 manhunt…

As they face escalating threats and uncover a rising body count, an old enemy from Marlee's past resurfaces. Will they be able to rescue the child and bring dangerous criminals to justice before time runs out? My favorite quote is “Ranger Charlie Woodridge, ma’am,” the woman said as she passed. “We sure appreciate your help in finding this little one.” The woman introduced herself with a nod before climbing into Graham’s passenger seat. “I’m sure Hunter especially does.” Marlee wondered again about the connection Hunter had with the child. I recommend reading this book. Tracing a Kidnapper's Trail by Katy Lee is a 5-star book. I am looking forward to reading more books by Katy Lee. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced readers copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions shared here in this review are my own. Love Inspired Suspense: Courage. Danger. Faith.
Hunter Shelton walks into a crime scene expecting routine procedure and instead finds the past waiting for him in the most brutal way. A murdered ex-fiancée. A missing child. Questions that demand to be answered.
The search that follows is not only a manhunt. Every mile pulls him back through old choices. Responsibility sharpens and fatherhood rises where he once walked away. Repentance presses into each step he takes.
Marlee Price carries strength like armor. DEA precision. Guarded faith. History with Hunter that never settled cleanly. Watching them move forward together while danger tightens felt personal. Trust does not return all at once. It forms the way a K-9 traces what lingers in the air, slow and certain, even when nothing visible lies ahead. Healing stops where it hurts. Then it moves again.
The faith thread stands in the open. When Hunter tells Marlee, “…Jesus has paid your debts … He paid for them all, free and clear,” it comes from a man who knows what debt feels like.
Later, his awakening lands even deeper: “…God wants your eyes wide-open … when I finally realized what God’s love looked like, I began seeing evidence of it everywhere in my life … The Creator of the Universe loved me. Me! Regardless of anything I had done, He still loved me …”
The suspense carries weight. Libby and Gustav work with instinct and loyalty, yet the deeper pursuit runs through wounded hearts. God moves steadily, drawing what wandered back toward Himself.
Katy Lee writes suspense without hiding the gospel. Conviction breathes. Grace costs something. Redemption is not decorative. It is necessary.
That kind of truth leaves a mark.
I received a digital ARC of this book from the author and JustRead Publicity Tours. LLC. I was not required to write a positive review and was not compensated in any way. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are my own and reflect my honest evaluation of the writing, content, and narration.
I really enjoy Christian Mystery Suspense novels. Tracing a Kidnapper's Trail by Katy Lee is the latest in this genre that I have read. It is Book 18 in K-9 Search and Rescue Series. The series is written by various authors and the books are great as Stand Alone novels.I have read several in this series and I also enjoy the LOVE Inspired series.
WOW, this storyline caught my attention right away. Hunter Shelton and his dog, Libby, who are Search and Rescue workers, are heartbroken to come to a murder scene to discover his ex-fiance murdered. Even more devastated when he learns a child has been kidnapped and the little girl might be his daughter that he never knew about. The case becomes very involved and not one he can work on without assistance from another detective. Marlee Price and her K-9 dog join forces with Hunter and Libby to help find the missing child and capture the suspects. Danger is lurking for both Hunter and especially Marlee. Time is of the essence to find the missing child. The pair is finding they are falling for one another, but they need to deal with their pasts to be able to move forward. The story has many twists and turns, unexpected happenings, but it keep me wanting to continue to read until the end. The book is one of Faith, Family, Mystery and Romance. I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Christian Mystery. FANTASTIC BOOK!
I had to take a deep breath when I finished Tracing a Kidnapper’s Trail, as I didn’t realize I had been holding my breath! This one was intense from the first sentence, and that suspenseful and action-packed mood continues the more the story unfolds. This is a pretty dire situation with some very serious consequences, and it’s clear that neither Marlee nor Hunter are here to play.
On top of a bounty, a crime investigation, and hunting for a kidnapped child, you have two leads who have a significant and nuanced history. Talk about complicated! There is a lot going on, but the author handles the situation masterfully and adds such depth to Hunter and Marlee and their situation, creating the perfect balance of suspense with emotion and threads of faith.
The ending warmed my heart, though I wish it didn’t have to be so rushed. I would’ve loved an epilogue where there could’ve been more time to savor the satisfaction of the ending of a rough case and a much-deserved happily ever after, but alas, that was not to be. Still, I enjoyed this nail-biting romantic suspense that was action-packed with emotion, faith, and a love story that can be felt through the pages.
*I have voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book which I received from the author/publisher. All views and opinions expressed are completely honest, and my own.
This is the first book by this author that I have read/listened to. I listened to audiobook version performed by Emily Sutton-Smith, and she did a good job narrating. Hunter and Libby are search and rescue but get called to a crime scene because his ex-fiancé was murdered but there was a little girl missing Nancy-Sue. Marlee and her canine are a force to be reckoned with DEA. (I'm not trying to spell his name from the audiobook!) This is the first Christian Romantic Suspense book I've read/listened to. I really enjoyed it. Hunter has a past that he's not proud of and it took him finding God to forgive himself. Marlee used to be a believer, but she felt abandoned with all the things that happened in her life, so she rediscovers a lot of relationships in this book. The suspense, action and surprises in this book are top notch. I look forward to more of this genre and this author! While this is a Christian focused book it really just shows how this character grew in his journey and how it helped him heal not telling you what you need to believe. I feel like it could be a good book for anyone to read if you enjoy suspense. Thanks to NetGalley for letting me get this early! This review is my opinion only without any influence from anyone else.
Well, that was intense! Best clear your calendar and be prepared for a marathon read (or listen in my case.) And, speaking of the audio edition, what a stellar performance by Emily Sutton-Smith! Her voice is a perfect match for the intensity of this story and she really does justice to Marlee’s tough-as-nails, defiantly stubborn persona. A winning author/narrator combination that compelled me to keep reading (listening!)
Loved the complicated start to Hunter and Marlee’s relationship, which really began back in college. It’s a gritty enemies to more trope that gradually morphs into a wary truce and then hesitant friendship. There’s lots to unearth about their shared past that includes a significant look at the power of forgiveness.
A taut and emotional romantic suspense with some stunning plot twists that make this book impossible to walk away from until every final last detail is revealed!
My thanks to HarperCollins, Harlequin Audio and Net Galley for providing me with an audio copy of this book.
I loved this romantic suspense adventure from Katy Lee. Danger lurks right from the start - Hunter Shelton and his search and rescue bloodhound arrive at a crime scene only to discover that his ex-fiancé has been murdered. But things get worse when he realizes her young daughter is missing - and it might be his daughter. He calls in DEA Agent Marlee Price to help him track the child down. But Marlee has her own problems because a drug dealer has put a hit out on her.
This book is chock full of action, suspense, and danger. But the characters are incredibly likable. Marlee is strong but needs to face her past. Hunter still regrets so many of his past choices as well. I love the second chances romance theme along with the spiritual message of forgiveness and letting go.
The narration for the audiobook was amazing! I think the narrator did a great job of bringing the characters to life.
I received an ebook review copy of this book through NetGalley. All opinions expressed in this review are my own.
Hunter Shelton is swept into a whirlwind of crime and intrigue when he and his search and rescue dog respond to an alert, that has more personal implications than he imagined. He enlists the help of DEA agent, Marlee Price the only person he knows to call to help them find the killer and the missing little girl.
A high stakes read, with a lot going on. Marlee and Hunter are old acquaintances who don't have the best history together. But they must put that aside to get to the bottom of who is behind the murders and taking the young girl. Marlee and Hunter both have well trained dogs, with strengths in different disciplines, I liked that they worked together, finding clues along the way to build the case.
Overall, a engaging read likable lead characters, a high stakes case, and a lot going on. I admired their perseverance and faith, even when it wasn't easy. A suspenseful read, with second chance romance, and themes of trust God.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
This was a wonderful Christian Suspense novel by Katy Lee. I listened to the audio version of it and really enjoyed the narrator. She did a good job using accents and distinguishing between characters speaking.
What an intense ride this one was! There was action from start to finish and very little downtime between action scenes. If you like fast paced and action packed stories, this one is for you!
I loved the K-9's in this one. You have Libby who is a SAR (search and rescue) dog and Gustav who is a narcotics dog. It was an interesting dynamic seeing two dogs with two completely different functions working together and I loved that about this book. I read a lot of K-9 stories and this one stood out for me because of this unique dynamic.
I enjoyed the suspense as much as I liked the underlying messages of love, faith and redemption. This is an author I will be looking to read a lot more of in the future.
"Typically, only coyotes and jackrabbits traipsed through Harmony Canyon State Park in the middle of the night - and the occasional hiker who didn't return from a trek through the eight-mile-long and eight-hundred-foot-deep canyon. For Hunter, 2:00 a.m. phone calls typically meant someone had gone missing." When Hunter was called to a crime scene, he was really confused since as a K-9 handler, he normally only helped with searches. But when he discovers that it is his former fiancée and that her daughter is missing, he knows that he needs to help. The time to find a younger one is critical. His dog, Libby, is ready to track. Marlee is used to tracking down drugs as a DEA officer, and her dog, Gustav, assists. But when her late brother's best friend reaches out, she does not even want to answer his call. Hunter wasn't there for her brother - why should she be there for him? But the missing girl needs to be found. Can she put aside their feelings? This is a romantic suspense book full of twists and turns. A few details were predictable, but the storyline was full of plenty of surprises. Dogs are a pivotal part of the plot. The title seems to be a stand-alone. I definitely could follow along with all of the details. Themes include forgiveness, redemption and second chances. I read this book as a part of a tour. I wanted to read and review it. All opinions are my own.
Tracing a kidnapper’s trail is written by Katy Lee. This book will capture your attention within the first few pages. Search and rescue worker Hunter Shelton and Libby has bloodhound are called to a crime scene. It turns out to be his ex fiancé and he finds out that her young daughter is missing. He is worried that she has been taken by drug runners so he calls his best friend sister, MARLEE. She is a DEA agent and she’s never forgiven him for the death of her brother.
The two need to handle their problems from the past and try to work together to find the young child. There’s lots of action and suspense. Secrets come to light The book is well written the storyline is engaging. The characters have flaws. Thank you to the author, publisher and NetGalley for allowing me to listen to a copy of this book. All thoughts on my own
This story took my breath away so many times! Lots of twists, danger, and action around every corner and in every chapter. I didn’t know who was on Hunter and Marlee’s side and who were against them.
Hunter and Marlee are reunited after a traumatic death pushed them apart. Now they are working together to solve a murder and find a missing girl. The characters (and dogs!) were so good, and the story line kept me on the edge of my seat from beginning to end. I also liked how Hunter was not afraid to share his belief in God and how God forgave him for his past sins and helped him become a better man.
Highly recommend this book if you like fast paced, clean Christian suspense. I absolutely loved it! I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions and views expressed are my own.
From the first page, you get drawn into this story just like the main character Hunter Shelton and his search and rescue bloodhound Libby. When he discovers his ex-fiancee has been murdered and that she has a daughter that could possibly be his - and that she is missing - you have to keep reading to find out what happens next! He ends up teaming up with Agent Marlee Price, who he also has history with, and then the action really gets moving! There are so many twists, turns, and trying to find out who can be trusted - even among law enforcement - that this is one story that is hard to put down. If you like mystery, suspense, action and complex characters, this is a book for you. I received an advance copy from the author but all opinions are my own.
Katy Lee crafts a high-octane suspense novel that is hard to put down! When SAR worker Hunter Sheldon is called to a crime scene, he never expects to find his ex-fiancée to be the victim and her child missing. When evidence points to a drug running scheme, he turns to the one person he knows will find answers - DEA Agent Marlee Price. But Marlee and Hunter have a storied past - pain and hurt never resolved over the loss of his best friend and her brother, Ben Price. Can the two lay aside their differences and pain, and focus on finding the lost little girl before it's too late? Add in a rising body count, a drug lord gunning for Marlee, and Hunter's possible connection to the little girl and you'll be turning pages way past bedtime to finish this riveting story.
If this book were a horse race, the names of those in the lead would be Danger and Action, right out of the gate! Hunter and his search and rescue bloodhound arrive at a crime scene to find a woman murdered and a little girl missing. DEA Agent Marlee teams up with them to find the child, but has a target on her own back to deal with, too. Tracing a Kidnapper's Trail, by author Katy Lee, has it all: suspense, danger, second chances, forgiveness, faith, love, and restoration. I love the characters and how they interact with one another, and the setting is vividly described. It's a must read! My thanks for the complimentary copy of this book. My opinions are entirely my own.
Tracing a Kidnapper's Trail by Katy Lee is book #18 in the K9 Search & Rescue series.
Imagine finding your x-fiancée murdered and learning not only does she have a young daughter but who is also missing - then wondering... am I the father? This is exactly what happens to rescue worker Hunter Shelton and his bloodhound Libby when called in on the case. Tracing A Kidnapper's Trail was another awesome book by Katy Lee. DEA Agent Marlee Price gets a call from her ex-friend about a missing child and possible drug runners. Hunter Shelton, a search and rescue worker has found a body and some illegal drugs. But not only that the dead woman's little girl is missing. Now they must find her while out running bullets from a drug lord from her past and the people they're after. This book was so exciting and the ending was fantastic!
After listening to this audiobook, I’m now a fan of Katy Lee’s writing. In her most recent work and my first book from her, Tracing a Kidnapper’s Trail, the danger was intense, the suspense of-the-charts and a second-chance romance that had me cheering for the characters. And lots of canine action to boot. I really enjoyed this story.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher. The opinions expressed are completely my own.
This is a book that once you start reading it you don't want to stop. It has action, suspense, mystery, drama and just enough twists and turns to keep you turning the pages to see what happens next. I loved it! I received a complimentary copy and was not required to write a review. All opinions expressed are my own.
