By sixth grade, Meghan Carver knew she wanted to write. After earning a degree in English from Millikin University, she detoured to law school, earning a Juris Doctorate from Indiana University. She then worked in immigration law and taught Comp 101 at the local college. Now, she homeschools her six children with her college professor husband. I love that the reader is pointed to our powerful heavenly Father and the need for reliance on and a relationship with Him! I also admired Veronica's resilience and determination after tragedy.
I struggled with the redundancy throughout the book as well as the unrealistic nature of a lot of the storyline. Somehow Nadia Popov escapes prison, finds a woman whose identity was completely changed, and knows her every move and location all in the span of days. Many of the run-ins between Popov and Veronica were so similar that I found myself struggling to continue reading at times.
The romance part of the story was sweet but also a bit far fetched for me, and the language seemed a little mixed up at times.
I felt like the beginning needed a little more background to it before just plunging in.
I did enjoy the intertwining of the Amish and Englisch worlds as well as the sibling relationship between Matthew and Esther. Especially I loved the redemption Matthew finally found and the forgiveness he gave to himself for a tragedy he couldn't have changed.
I'll read more of Mrs. Carver's writing!

After 20 years in the Witness Protection Program, how did the killer of Veronica Williams' parents locate her days after escaping prison? Could Amish bookstore owner Matthew Yoder and his sister Esther save the young women from a vengeful murderer and her accomplice?

"Amish Country Hideout" is the first in Meghan Carver's Plain Secrets series. Carver does an excellent job of keeping you turning pages, ready for the next plot twist, and at dealing with the different worlds her main protagonists are living in, Matthew an Amish man who lost his parents in a farm with a bad leg as a reminder, and Veronica a 30 year old who spent 2/3 of her life with a new identity but always ready to run when needed.

I normally don't read Amish fiction, but I'm looking forward to the next installment of this series.

Was losing attentiveness. THEN, a specific scene error, I started speed-reading.

A WITSEC woman who is running from the very people who put her there.
An Amish man and his sister save her.
The first part of the book is really good ...
And then...

And then... And then...

Not so good. Why? Reasons will give a spoiler or two.

- He is an Amish man who instantly falls head over heels with an Englisher.
- A bishop in NEVER consulted or even mentioned.
- A car is hitting the back of the buggy several times, yet they are going to HIDE at the next turn. Impossible.

At that point, I speed read the rest of the book.
Therefore, I cannot recommend.

Why is this a problem for some readers (like me)? When I read this scene, along with other issues, I realized I was probably going to bump into more. The speed-read revealed Bad Guys Finding Them, Them Escaping, BGFT, TM, over and over ... was glad I did what I did.

New author to me…

Veronica William is in witness protection after witnessing the murder of her parents. She is on the run after the murderer escapes from prison. She is spotted at the bus station and must make a quick escape. Seeing an Amish man, Veronica seeks his help in escaping. Somehow her cover is blown and hiding with the Amish Matthew Yoder and his sister has been compromised. Matthew is determined to help Veronica stay safe until she can meet with the US Marshal handler. Lots of twist and turns.

This book was so exciting! Veronica had been in the Witness Protection Program for 20 years after seeing her parents killed by a kidnapper. When the kidnapper escaped from prison and found her, she went on the run again. She meets Matthew and his sister who are Amish and they help. The action continues as they have to keep running. This book will keep you turning the pages. I loved Matthew and Veronica's story. I definitely recommend this book and am looking forward to reading more by this author.

What a thrilling book! Finding love on the run? Can it really happen? Can an English woman and an Amish man make a go of a happily ever after? This book answers that and so much more! I love how Matthew faces his past and realizes he truly disabled himself! Veronica finds safety and belonging in a place she never expected! Hard to put down and wholesome goodness!

I really enjoyed reading this book. From the very beginning it was packed with suspense, and I found myself reading faster to see what was going to happen next. If you enjoy reading Amish books with suspense than this book is for you.

Wow! I really loved this one!!
Fast action story with lots of twists and turns that kept coming around the corner to make you keep turning the pages to see what happened next! Some heart stopping moments along the way as well.
I loved every minute of it.
Some parts even .ade the hairs stand up on my neck wow!!
Awesome characters that I will be thinking about for awhile even after I finished this delightful action/ adventure.
Im giving this 5 stars for a job well done!
You'll not want to put this one down once you open the story!

I was fortunate enough to receive an advanced copy of Amish Country Hideout by Meghan Carver.
Amish Country Hideout is a wonderfully engaging start to the Plain Secret Series. Meghan blends suspense, warmth, and faithful themes into a story that kept me turning pages from the very first chapter. I love the unique setting of Amish country and how she uses it both as a peaceful refuge and a backdrop for high stakes danger. I give this book 5 stars. All opinions are my own.
