Anime Dimenticate: Le vittime dimenticate di Whitby, Libro 3

Rate this book

«Cercate riparo! C'è una tempesta in arrivo su Whitby. Avvincente, atmosferico, personaggi per cui tifare - questo libro ha tutto!» ★★★★★ TG Reid, Dark is the Grave

I really like the two main characters of this series and their relationship, and the writing generally flows well.
Unfortunately, I feel this particular volume (the third in the series) suffers from what I would term an "exhausting excess of plot". I'm not sure if it is an attempt by the author at continuing misdirection so we don't figure out the culprit too soon or if he is just throwing every random thing he thinks of at the wall. Although for the most part the various potential suspects backstories are individually well constructed - when taken altogether in one book it just feels like too much. I was also quite disappointed when the murderer was finally revealed, as it seems totally implausible that the same nosey neighbor that had reported him previously wouldn't have noticed and reported him to either the police or animal welfare again.

Tres estrellas.

This is the third book published in this series and, if you know me, you'll know what I am about to say, start from the beginning and read in order, you'll get the best from the characters and ongoing stories if you do....! You'll also know that I am a big fan of this author, so if you haven't already, check out his other series.
So, in this book, we start with remains being found in an old fridge when it was raised from the sea by magnet fishers. Yep, they're a thing, who knew?!?!
Initial inspection points to them being of a child. Speculation is rife and everyone is saddened when they are confirmed to be those of 13 year old Greg Lyle who went missing whilst walking his beloved dog Buddy many years ago. This case resonates with DI Gerry Carver more than DCI Frank Black as Greg was, if they had diagnosed back in the day, more than likely Autistic, Buddy being akin to her own companion dog Rylan. Although, that said, vulnerable teen also resonates with Frank as he is still looking for his estranged daughter.
Their investigation starts in earnest, obviously hampered by the time passed since Greg went missing. Starting with his parents, moving on to the people and places he interacted with, they also unearth other shenanigans along the way, although I will leave you to discover them as the author intends. Suffice to say, as with the majority of this author's books, it does get quite dark in places.
But, again as per you would expect, the plotting is intricate and very well executed, weaving around and about until we finally get the whole truth. Characters are well drawn and all play their parts well, whether major or minor, series or episode. And without any superfluous waffle or padding, it all gets on with itself very well indeed. Culminating in a wholly satisfying conclusion.
All in all, a worthy addition to what is shaping up to be another cracking series. Roll on next time.

You know when you go into a Wes Markin book you're going to be entertained. It may be dark and make you wince, and shift uncomfortably, but you will keep turning the pages.
I was slightly worried when Wes started this series that comparisons might be made to another huge author, but I need not have worried.
This time a young boy is found in a fridge, after he disappeared 15 years ago. Not the gentlest opening I think you'll agree.
What follows is a fascinating look at both autism in its variety of forms, at both the prejudices and struggles, the ignorance and vulnerability. There's religious fantasism and people trafficking that all intertwine to make a breathtaking read.
I couldn't turn the pages fast enough and once again Wes has surpassed himself. This felt raw, the emotion from Frank over the loss of his daughter, even Gerry had her moments this time. Her relationship with Tom does provide some humour however. Poor Tom!
Each character felt stripped bare, their whole vulnerability laid out on the page for you to devour and judge.
This has fast become one of my favourite series, and I cannot wait to see what Wes comes up with next. I suspect Frank, Gerry and Co. won't be getting a breather anytime soon.

This is book three in the Forgotten Victims series set in Whitby on the NorthYorkshire coast featuring characters that were in the previous books. It's good to read about Gerry and her faithful dog Rylan again and not forgetting Frank, big hearted and in charge of the investigation. Although it is part of a series it can be easily read as a stand-alone book too.
This story focuses on a body being fished from the sea by magnet fishers. This body is a child or young teenager, and it's concealed inside an old fridge. Frank and Gerry are soon finding out personal family issues regarding the body, but soon, there are lots of rumours going around too! Gerry is very protective of the fact that the child Greg was like herself. He struggled to fit in as he was autistic too. Is this a definitive fact for murder? Or just a similarity. Set around the streets of Whitby with some characters that you just can't like and some you do. But I certainly didn't know who did it till the end of the book.
I found this a really enjoyable read, hard to read at times because of the storyline, but I think it is the best so far in the "forgotten victims" series. I'm glad to see that there is to be another book in the series. I can't wait to read it. A five-star 🌟 read from me.

I am thoroughly enjoying the Whitby's Forgotten Victims series. Forgotten Souls is the best installment so far.
DCI Frank Black and his team including Gerry who is neurodiverse and her supercool therapy dog Rylan are back in all of their glory to solve another cold case, the toughest and most heartbreaking one of the series.
As usual the case is just the tip of the iceberg as there are many other dark years old secrets to be uncovered.
The author explores the subjects of child murder, neurodiversity , religion indoctrination and child trafficking which some may find upsetting. However, it is done in what is obviously a very a well researched and dignified way. Frank Black and his team provide just the right amount of humour to make it easier to read about such heavy topics.
I especially enjoyed getting to read more about Gerry and Tom and laughed so much the whole way through the chapter meeting Tom's parents...special thanks to Rylan for that.
As always the Epilogue was very satisfying with everything tied up well, however I am still desperate to know more about Frank's daughter.
In the words of DCI Frank Black "No soul should be forgotten" abd I certainly won't be forgetting this book.
Very worthy of 5 stars

I love the two main characters Frank and Gerry. And I love that these books are set in Whitby but….
There’s a lot going on here and I do mean a lot. After I’d finished reading I checked the reviews and I found one that perfectly summed up my feelings.

This is another riveting read in this excellent series. As usual, Frank and Gerry find themselves digging into past events when a body is found in an old fridge in the sea. It is particularly heart-rendering when it turns out to be the body of a young teenage boy who was missing for many years and presumed drowned after falling off a cliff.

As usual, there are plenty of people with links to past events. Frank and Gerry find themselves dealing with human trafficking, religious obsession and less than ideal domestic situations. I found the whole story quite harrowing and I thought the way autism was brought more to the fore especially when looking back through the years before we had the diagnosis and understanding of this condition today. Thankfully, Gerry and Tom's relationship provides some much welcome humour and light relief so it's not all grim reading. Frank too is still in turmoil over his daughter and coming to terms with events in his past concerning his dead wife.

Overall it's a brilliant read and as usual with this series, a story that will linger in the memory for a while.

Forgotten Souls by Wes Markin

Book 3 of Wes Markin’s superbly crafted Whitby’s Forgotten Victims series is plain and simply, a ‘must read.’

This time, the author draws out more of the vulnerability of the (externally) hard and unemotional DCI Frank Black when a 13-year-old boy’s remains are found. Frank is forced, once again, to question his own failings (as he sees them) of his own parenting as he seeks reason and ultimately the culprit of the victim’s death.

In parallel, Wes Markin cleverly draws a parallel between Frank’s personal suffering which is driving him, with those of his autistic detective partner, DI Gerry Carver, who is on her own journey of discovery in the form of a romantic relationship.

These are wonderful, rich characters which so differentiates Wes Markin from his counterparts in the very competitive world of the fictional crime genre.

Needless to say, the case is solved but the vulnerability of the players is what makes Forgotten Souls a highly recommended read.

I'm fully invested in this Whity-based crime series now, featuring DCI Frank Black and DI Gerry Carver. Each one (so far) explores a case featuring an old body - the forgotten bodies of the series name. Frank fights hard to do what's right by each one.

In this case, the body of a young boy is found inside a fridge that's been flung into water. The investigation shows he had autism (which is relevant, as so does Gerry), and was presumed to have fallen from a cliff at height.

As usual for this series, we also follow some viewpoints of people who are potentially mixed up in the case, or have their own sad stories to tell.

It's a recipe that works well. Once again, I enjoyed the police team working so well together (competence is great, not boring), and the relationship between Frank and Gerry growing. It was fun to get more insights into her relationship with her boyfriend, too.

The author landed the ending as per usual - and so I'll be back for more.

This is the third book in this series and it certainly didn’t disappoint. I really enjoyed this book and I thought it the best of the three in the series so far.

Frank and Gerry, with her support dog Rylan, and the team are back investigating another case. The body of a teenage boy is found in an old fridge that’s been dredged from the sea. It comes to light that the body is that of 14 year old Greg Lyle who had disappeared twenty six years earlier.

The team work tirelessly to find out as much as they can about Greg and his life before he disappeared. It was previously thought that Greg had fallen to his death off a cliff as he was last seen in that area.

There are quite a few suspects and they have all had very different and traumatic lives.

I would definitely recommend this book and can’t wait to read the next one in the series.

Book 3 in the series joins DCI Frank Black and DI Gerry Carver in the search for the killer of a young boy Greg who was found in a fridge and this poor lad was missing since 1997.

Again, plenty of brilliant complex characters, although in this book, I struggled to see the clear correlation between them but that didn't matter as each character had a good strong back story.

What I really enjoyed about this book is the dive into autism. The murdered boy and his best friend were both autistic (as is Gerry) and how this was explained and handled was so good!

The other 2 books in this series were an easy 5 stars for me, the reason this book is 4 is all down to the killer of young Greg and their reasons for it, I just didn't buy it and it seems implausible.

Thank you to The Book Club reviewers page for the copy of this book!

This next outing for Frank and Gerry begins with the discovery of a teenager's body in an old fridge dragged up by magnet fishers from an old pier. The story is quite dark, involving child murder and religious fanaticism, though the worst aspects take place offstage, so to speak. It's a real puzzle as lives and intentions twist together. I loved the way we got to know Frank and Gerry better, and the way Frank became more appreciative of the role of Gerry's support dog. The autistic boy from the fridge had a dog that played a similar role to Gerry's Rylan. It's a good, exciting story on the surface but with many layers underneath. I hope we hear more from these characters, though Frank's age will give this an upper limit. A great read.

Fantastically atmospheric with a stunning backdrop of Whitby, a place really special to me. I loved recognising all the places and breathing in the lovely descriptions of the land and seascapes, the essence of the place is captured beautifully. The story is stark and brilliantly written, the poignant and heart stirring tale of a young lad taken far too young and in tragic and violent circumstances, dredged up from the sea encased in a fridge. The characterisation goes from strength to strength with some fantastically human and vulnerable personalities emerging and building layer by layer. I was honestly on the edge of my seat and gripped from beginning to end. Love love love this series so much. A very definite recommend.

This is the 3rd book in the Frank Black and Gerry Carver series. A couple of magnet fishermen land a fridge off the pier in Whitby but find a body in the fridge. Its obvious this fridge has been in the sea for some time so Frank and his team in the cold case department as sent for. There are a few sub-plots in this story which all link in well with the main story. Frank can choose his own team and he keeps the ones he has worked with before they are all disliked by other members of the force but Frank brings out the best in them. They are a good team and work well together. I love these books, they are short chapters, good stories and flow very well. I can't put them down. I'm now waiting for number 4 in the series.

Another Belter!

Forgotten Souls has everything you hope for in a crime thriller. By far for me this totally outshines books 1 and 2 of this additive series. The team find themselves investigating a crime that happened 26 years ago when the tragic discovery of a body concealed inside a refrigerator is washed up on the local beach.
The discovery soon turns into a murderer investigation where the team have the task of trawling information from years ago.
I love the lead characters and we see Frank and Gerry develop their relationship further. Gerry's relationship with Tom can be hilarious with her requests and comments. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and will be onto book 2 soon. Well written Wes, thank you. Barbara Sheffield.

Book 3 in The Forgotten Series and it just gets better with each book. The subject of Autism is a main theme throughout this storyline, child abuse and trafficking bring a darkness that is heartbreaking to read at times, it centres around a young boy whose body has been found in a fridge, and Frank, Gerry and the team have another cold case to solve. It’s a difficult read at times, though as always the Author knows his subject and researches thoroughly.
Forgotten Souls will be hard to top, I love the characters and and how we see them developing and bonding, including Gerry’s dog Rylan, who plays such an important role supporting Gerry in her day to day life.
I absolutely recommend this series and Author and can’t wait to read book 4.

Loving this series

This is my favourite series at present, I've just read all 3 straight, with barely a breather, so nothing much else has got done. I am gutted I've got to wait till March now for the next book. I absolutely love the character Gerry, when she met up with Tom's parents, I laughed so loud I'm sure the neighbours must have heard me. The bond she has with her dog Rylan is truly special. All in all, great characters, intriguing story with lots of twists and turns, all cleverly linking up, with an unexpected ending. Lots of humour, touching moments, sadness and joy. Thank you so much Mr Markin, you have made these cold miserable evenings much more pleasurable, curled up in the warmth with this fabulous new series 😁

Book three in this gripping Yorkshire Crime series and I couldn't wait to dive in and catch up with DCI Frank Black and his beautifully portrayed companion DI Gerry Carver.
An atmospheric and sensitively told storyline which pulls at the heartstrings. It is quite thought provoking and makes you realise that evil (and love)comes in many guises. Dark in places and humorous in others. Keeps you on your toes.
With well crafted likable characters and a deeply engaging plot the chapters flew by.
I really hope that we haven't seen the last of Frank and Gerry. Keep them coming Wes Markin. Top notch story telling as usual.

Another first class read from Wes markin in the forgotten Whitby victims . I love how Wes markin introduces new characters throughout the text and with most I find myself asking was it you should committed the murder . I love franks team and the dynamics of it with Gerry and her quirky ways and her sidekick Rylan. This story was a tragic unnecessary death of a child and I love the passion frank has for his job and trying to get justice for the long forgotten victims the third book in this series once again it didn’t disappoint looking forward to more from Wes Markin he has quickly became one of my favourite authors

Overall, I found much to really like about this third book in the Whitby series - particularly the author’s insights into people with autism, the progress that’s been made in these folks’ fuller inclusion in society and issues they still face. The characters are exceptionally well developed, the bulk of the story well plotted. That said, about 80% into the novel, it’s multiple plot lines become just too much to be believed. Although they are kind of tied together at the end, the author had to resort to wrapping each up separately in the epilogue…just got a bit too ambitious. It won’t stop me from reading more in the series.

Jack, Liam and sarah childhood friends go magnet fishing and find a body. DCI Frank Black is in charge along side DI Gerry Carver set in Whitby it has all the spooky atmosphere required to make this a dark story. While they are investigating, several incidents happen Frank is struggling with issues of his own including giving up drinking and his daughter is still missing. I love the characters in this series and it has it's funny moments.
Yet again Wes Markin has knocked it out of the park brilliant read.

Stunned. Absolutely stunned.

Forgotten Souls, escalated quickly. Grabbed me by the collar and didn't let me go.

This fast paced, investigation unfolds to lead down several dark and disturbing routes.

Brilliantly written and the characters are developing further in each book.

I am a but besotted with Frank, Gerry and Rylan. Sharon and Reggie are featuring more now too.

This could be read as a stand alone, or thoroughly enjoyed as part of the series.

This story line isn't for the feint hearted, it kept me awake and had me sobbing!

You have excelled yourself Wes Markin!

This one took a while to get into. It was at the halfway point (I know, quite a long time, but I am a Wes Markin fan) when I realised the complexity of it and was eager to put all the pieces together.
There are many facets to the story with almost insignificant links, however, all carry a story in their own right and lead the reader to a satisfactory conclusion.
The content is grim at times, but the development of the characters and their back stories keeps you hooked.
Also, I’ve got to know Broadstairs a little over 2024 and it was enjoyable to read about some familiar places.

Not just a crime novel

I read constantly, and an always keen to read books based where I live close(ish) to..( I'm not lucky enough to love in Whitby though !)
I have galloped through these books because of the great, well paced and intriguing plots . Very human characters, that you can relate to.
Very , clever books.
But , it is the the characters of Gerry who has made this series of books so readable for me. Without spoiling the storylines ,I now have a far greater understanding about Gerry . (I have learned such a great deal thank you.)
Keep writing them please!

Remembered forever.

Another outstanding, exciting, deeply moving book, set in and around Whitby. It's the time of the Goth festival and an old fridge is dragged out of the water. It contains the body of a young boy. Troubled Frank and his autistic assistant Gerry find his killer. As usual the book is written with sensitivity and makes you feel the guilt and pain of those involved. As a bonus we now have the hilarious relief in following Gerry's progress pursuing an intimate relationship. Can't wait but gotta steel myself for the next heart-rending story. Recommended.

forgotten souls

I won’t forget this book ever. Its taught me such a lot things. Mainly insight into the myriad different levels of autism, I soaked up the knowledge of the lives of characters interactions. The story was a grim reminder of dark pasts and lies coming home to roost, but also of understanding and redemption. It was a cracking read. Well done Wes, my grandson and I will be eternally grateful. I’m definitely getting your next book.

Wes Markin's new series 'Forgotten Victims' goes from strength to strength with the arrival of book 3 - Forgotten Souls. The discovery of the body of a teenage boy in a refrigerator opens up a cold case from the 1990s. It's a complex story, with many suspects, and a great twist at the end. DCI Frank Black and his partner DI Gerry Carver are a great addition to Wes Markin's stable of crime fighters. I look forward to the final two books in the series.

Autism must be understood

This book brings the complexity of living with autism and how people who have difficulty usually end up doing the wrong thing which often leads to more complications. I enjoyed Wes Markin’s leading us through different interactions of the people in this book. I eNjoyed his dePiction of Gerry Carver and her relationship challenge with Tom. I can’t wait to read Book 4 so I can see how she progresses.
