Unexpected Treasure

Rate this book
Allie Quinn is not an explorer, and Jake O'Malley is definitely not her husband.

Allie would give anything to make her grandfather's lifelong dream come true. Decades ago, he discovered an ancient civilization, but an earthquake destroyed the evidence. Now, new clues hinting at a "red treasure" lead to a cave in nearby Hauser Mountain, and Allie is invited to be part of the expedition.

One big problem. The eccentric landowner only allows married couples to stay – and work – on her property, but Allie has no idea where to find a husband on short notice.

Museum security guard Jake has gotten close to the old man, who reminds him of his own grandfather. This expedition would be a boon for the museum, and it could validate his friend's discovery. On a whim, Jake volunteers to be Allie's husband, securing both of their positions on the team.

Armed with a legitimate (but unfiled) marriage certificate, cheap rings, and good intentions, Allie and Jake embark on a treasure hunt with a small expert team (of married couples) leading the way.

They might find a chest of rubies and gold… or they might find a treasure no one could have expected.

My only regret about this book is that I didn’t read it when it first was released, as intended. I love Carrie’s writing- her characters are always well developed and real. This book was no exception. In addition to the clean romance I’ve come to expect from her, this book also had a bit of mystery, making it quite exciting. (Honestly, I could not put it down!) I loved the characters’ quirks- from Estelle to Ralph! (So believable- and I have to wonder if Ralph was based on someone the author knows in real.)

Carrie’s writing made the story play out so clearly in my head. I could easily see this as a Hallmark-style movie, but in the best way - because it’s much better written and not at all formulaic.

This book was such a fun and heartwarming read—just what I’ve come to expect and love from this author! The story had that sweet, Hallmark-movie charm that made it easy to envision playing out on screen. The characters felt genuine, the romance was clean and uplifting, and I found myself smiling through most of it.

If you’re a fan of wholesome romantic comedies with just the right amount of feel-good moments, you won’t be disappointed. I highly recommend this book—as I do with all her others!
