[arc review] a festive enemies to lovers set at christmas in new york? sign me up!

christmas on fifth avenue is a dual pov romance that follows evie and noah.

evie is down on her luck after falling for an internet scam, and noah is in hiding after a football related incident that means he might never play professionally in the UK again.

this was a really cozy story and I enjoyed reading it on my flight—funnily enough—from heathrow to the US. it was fast paced and easy to get through that I finished it relatively quickly!

would recommend this as a great read for christmas 2025 ⭐️⭐️⭐️

thank you so much to one more chapter for the arc in exchange of an honest review!

Tis is the season! Christmas on Fifth Avenue brought me so much joy with all the adventures and the characters shenanigans.

Evie got scammed for a holiday at New York, also risking her job, but she also went viral and won a trip and a stay at the Plaza for Christmas. Noah is a footballer that needed to hide from the english news after a bad tackle that put at risk another player career. This is the story how they met in New York and helped each other to overcome a difficult moment.

It was a pleasure to see Evie and Noah growth. How they really think about their mistakes and how they own them in the end, even if it would have been so much easier to be swept away by their attraction and their adventures. This shows how good these characters are, Noah is still a bit too judgy for my like but he knows how to make amends.

Julie Caplin wrote a lovely story, and setting it in the Big Apple at Christmas time was such a nice touch.

I recommend this novel if you're looking for a nice holiday read.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for kindly giving me an advanced copy of this book to read.

4.5 stars! Fun, festive and cozy New York city Christmas!

This story reads super fast.
Probably because I fell in love with the authors writing style instantly.
You know those books that really pull you in from the first page, and easily make you feel immersed in that world?
This is one of those.
No slow starts, and no dragging here!

As for the plot, I really thought it was great!
We have Evie, who has recently been given the chance to stay at the Plaza for Christmas in NYC, following a very disastrous video posted of her online.
We also have Noah, a football (soccer) player, whose career is on thin ice after an incident involving another player.
These two meet by chance, but then can’t seem to stop running into each other.
It turns out they each may be exactly what the other needs to boost their spirits this holiday season.

I love, love, love the New York City setting!
It feels like a warm, comforting Hallmark movie, and that is perfect for me.
There is a lot of sight-seeing, activities and adventures throughout the city- which really makes this book come to life.

As for the romance, it was cute!
I always adore a Christmas romance. I just think they have so much sweetness.
The progression of Evie and Noah’s relationship was nice to read about, and I liked the way that they were able to support each other while they were both dealing with serious life challenges.

I only had one tiny problem here. Which was that Evie tended to be a bit self-centered at times.
For example: What she called “borrowing” money from her flatmates. (without asking), but insisted it was not stealing. Or, asking a near stranger how much money they make, and then googling it in front of them when she doesn't get a response.
It is part of the overall story, and what I think is meant to be a “quirky” personality. But, I just wish she had been written to be more considerate of others, and to have better social manners.

I wouldn’t say that this has a huge impact on the overall enjoyability of the story though, especially given that she improves as the story progresses.
By the end, she learns the error in some of her ways, and starts trying to make amends. Which was very nice to see!

One thing I did appreciate about Evie, was her grief. She was very devistated following the loss of her mother, and was desperate for this holiday that they’d always dreamt of going on together.
I thought this was really sad, but also heartwarming and sweet. It added a level of depth to the story, and made me feel for her.

Overall, this is very warm, sweet and emotional. A great holiday read!

Thank you to Netgalley, Harper Collins UK | One More Chapter, and author Julie Caplin, for providing me with the eARC of “Christmas on Fifth Avenue”, in exchange for my honest review!

3,5 stars

So this was originally gonna be 4 stars so let me explain why I deducted half of it. It starts out really cute, the christmas vibes are there, it´s cutesy it´s cozy, the banter is there, it feels magical, the fake dating is nicely done. Then we reach the 3/4 of the book and what happens? You already guessed it, the 3/4 breakup....Personally I am not the biggest fan of miscommunication trope (just talk ffs). And secondly, as a german I felt personally attacked by the spelling of "Porsche" (Porshe!? Are we being fr!? Does nobody check the spellings!?).

Overall really cutesy, magical and christmassy book, totally get the hype and if you can look past the miscommunication you will love it!

Unfortunately, this started off as a cute, cozy read; however, it was quickly derailed by the characters, the typos, the misspelled popular culture references, the grammar mistakes, and the lightning-fast-too-rushed HEA. I was just not feeling it, which is so disappointing.

The characters were a bit insufferable, especially Evie. I felt like she was this book's Elena Gilbert from The Vampire Diaries, and I felt like Katherine Pierce going- DO YOU EVER STOP CRYING? Yes, her grief is valid, but then again, so was Elena's, and is that character trait something you should feel through a book? That's usually a watch and see kind of thing. However, it was so exaggerated. Even her so-called accountability for the financial scam felt off and disingenuous. That whole storyline almost felt as if Evie committed accidental vehicular manslaughter, and then decided to do public speaking spots about the dangers of jaywalking as her community service and/or side hustle.

Even on top of that, even if you disagree with my opinion, the editing errors for a published book were beyond distracting. Then, again, that's not necessarily on the onus of the author, but if the author is going to make Gilmore Girls and Doctor Who references, I'd expect her to be a bit more accurate.

All in all, it was a could have and definitely should have DNF-type book. So, really, it's my fault for finishing.

*Adds ‘Visit New York at Christmas’ to bucket list…* Yep, Caplin hits all the right notes with this festive, warming romance. Readers are transported to New York at Christmas and the magic just radiated off of the pages. I could vividly picture the twinkling lights, the flurries of snow and the jaw-dropping shop displays as Evie and Noah experience a festive season they will never forget.

This is easily a book you can lose yourself in, forgetting all of the world around you. I love the meet-cute of Evie and Noah in the airport lounge and you know that these instant sparks are going to generate a great story. Both Evie and Noah are leaving the country under a cloud of negativity, thanks to things turning sour in their respective careers. Surprisingly, their paths have already crossed online and I thought Caplin could have made more than just a passing reference to this in the book, adding an element of dislike to these characters as they try to fight inevitable feelings developing.

As part of a publicity campaign, Evie and Noah find themselves spending more and more time together. It’s an opportunity to turn around public perception as, back at home, they are both under “trial by social media”. Noah and Evie start to open up to one another and I appreciated seeing the layers being pulled back. Evie, despite coming across as rather “happy go lucky” is actually still grieving from losing her mother. She puts up a front and dances around life, never fully committing to anything. On the other hand, Noah’s attitude towards his football has put him in hot water where he doesn’t think his professional career will ever recover. I loved watching how these characters learned something from the other to create a balance of a happier life that we see at the end of the novel.

Despite spending Christmas in a hotel, the staff are incredibly inviting and this adds to the cosy atmosphere of the book. It was great exploring the city with Evie and Noah and I think the writer really brings New York alive. I could vividly picture all of the scenes and thought the snowman building was a definite high point. Not only that, these tourist trips bring Evie and Noah closer together and, whilst as a reader you know there is going to be a separation at some part of the story, it was lovely to share their excitement and enthusiasm.

My only criticism with this novel is that it didn’t feel too dissimilar to other Caplin novels. The meet-cute, the falling in love against all odds and the disaster that temporarily separates our characters… it feels like this is a formula that has been tried and tested many times by this author and more. I think I was hoping for something a bit more different however, that being said, I did enjoy settling into the predictability of their relationship and seeing what adventures the could would get up to. I guess it was a bit of a guilty pleasure having a novel that guaranteed a happy ending, it was just a case of how the characters would reach this.

A cute romantic read, I think the setting really defined the story. The book is full of Christmas cheer and warmth, perfect for a winter snuggle.

With thanks to One More Chapter, Harper Collins, NetGalley and Rachel’s Random Resources for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This book just seemed to do so many things badly.
Personally I find the tragic back story’s boring and unoriginal. So here we have another lost soul having recently lost her remaining parent. And a man sent away to think about what he’s done….
The book started quite well but then it couldn’t decide what it was, Enemies to Lovers? Fake Dating? No slow burn or hot banter this was literally hot, cold, hot, cold! It was so tiresome that by halfway through I could have chucked it in.
I persevered to the end where an obligatory happy ending awaited with lessons learned all round.
2⭐️ at best!

Пфу, най-накрая я приключих. Изключително скучна и депресираща история. Ноа е арогантен и двуличен биполярен задник, а Иви е хленчещо емо, и комбинацията от двамата изобщо не беше забавна и коледна, нито романтична.

✅My thoughts:
What a cute, cozy holiday read!
The premise of the story is very unusual for sure!
It was lovely getting to know Evie as well as Noah. Both have so much going on in their personal life’s. I do have to say Evie’s situation was a bit hard for me to comprehend and understand(iykyk).
The atmosphere of New York City and The Plaza at Christmas was presented beautifully by the author.
Even though this book is part of a series, I feel it can be read as a standalone with no issue.
Are you in the mood for a emotional, funny, feel-good, and cozy holiday read? If you are, you definitely need to read Christmas on Fifth Avenue.

Thank you NetGalley, Bookouture and the author for the opportunity to read this book. All opinions expressed are my own.

really 1.5 (but beware I am grouchy today lol)

I had highhh hopes omg it could’ve been sooo cute but like ?? I couldn’t really stand evie. her “crime”? really not that big of a deal and her true friends wouldn’t have reacted like that and posted like that fr. but anyway. the mmc being american was not necessary. he truly didn’t even speak like he grew up here, his words were like a british person trying to be american and failing. the ending miscommunication was so silly. like how immature of both of them. they’re almost 30 and they’re acting like this?? cmon now grow up

Christmas on Fifth Avenue by Julie Caplin is the perfect festive escape wrapped in romance and holiday cheer.

The story follows a woman whose Christmas plans take an unexpected turn, leading her to New York City where love, self-discovery, and fresh starts await. While the romance is most definitely front and centre, what really makes this book shine is how it doubles as a love letter to New York at Christmas. From Fifth Avenue and Central Park to other iconic festive landmarks, it feels like a guided holiday tour through the city that never sleeps.

Beyond the romance and travel vibes, the book also weaves in thoughtful sub-plots about online scamming, showing how easily it can happen and the emotional impact it can have. It also tackles grief in a realistic and sensitive way, adding emotional depth and making the story feel grounded and relatable.

Overall, this is a feel-good Christmas read that blends romance, travel, festive atmosphere, and real-world issues beautifully. As a fan of Julie Caplin, I have read and enjoyed many of her Romantic Escapes books, I loved returning to her storytelling and can’t wait to read more in the Christmas Escapes series.

„Christmas on Fifth Avenue“ radiates an incredibly cosy atmosphere and lots of Christmas magic. The book creates exactly the kind of vibe you would imagine New York to have at Christmas time. It's a real feel-good book.
The individual characters were incredibly well developed and detailed. Each one had something unique about them. Even though there were quite a few of them, it didn't feel overloaded. I found Evie's development particularly beautiful and meaningful. It was easy to empathise with her, and I really enjoyed witnessing her personal journey / growth. However, I found Noah's development a bit linear, I would have liked to see more of his thoughts, inner conflicts and growth, perhaps through additional POVs.
I really enjoyed watching Evie and Noah get to know each other and slowly grow closer – their relationship felt real and emotional to me. The pace was just right too.
The writing style is very fluid and pleasant, so I basically flew through the pages.

Christmas in New York has always been a dream of mine...forever to remain a pipe dream...this was as close as I was going to get...

I've read and enjoyed several books by Caplin. She really knows how to engage her audience...her descriptions of New York, the Rockerfella Christmas tree, Macy's, Fifth Avenue et al really had me immersed in the wonder that was the city that never sleeps.

Enemies to lovers is one of my favourite tropes, so when H̶a̶r̶r̶y̶ Noah met S̶a̶l̶l̶y̶ Evie I knew it was going to be a goodie! They were extremely likeable characters, flawed but likeable. Add in that touch of Christmas magic and let love work it's magic...It was like a Hallmark movie only hotter!

An enjoyable Christmas romp which oozes seasonal shmultz! I really enjoyed the setting of the Plaza & there were many nods to some great Christmas films, from Breakfast at Tiffany’s to Home Alone & Sleepless in Seattle - even the main characters’ names were connected. No surprises but none were expected. A fun Christmas romance.

Many thanks to Net Galley for the ARC.

This a cute little festive read set in New York. As someone who was lucky enough to visit a few years ago at Christmas time, I could totally get our female main characters excitement. There is something magical about Christmas time in the city.

Evie is invited to New York as a PR opportunity. It has been her dream to visit and she is so excited. She means disgraced soccer star Noah on the plane and her friendly nature forces the two to become friends. Until she realises who he is and that he personally caused her professional trouble which made her take this trip. It soon becomes apparent that the two are booked into the same upmarket hotel and are going to have a hard time avoiding each other.

This is a quite, enteratining and funny read. The fair go from enermies to lovers. The author does a great job with the flow of the writing and the athmpsohere she creates is charming. I would defintely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a christmas romance.

4.5 stars! I very much enjoyed this book! It felt very natural and realistic. I enjoyed the characters, their relationship, development and growth. The story progressed at a good pace that kept me engaged. I felt connected to the characters and their story. I loved the New York City at Christmas time vibes. It made The Plaza even more dreamy than it already is. A fun holiday read that I highly recommend!

Tbh this book was so mid. It was more detail then plot, just so many unnecessary words added to this book. And the author kept repeating words over and over again, it was actually really annoying. The last 100 pages was good, there was a plot twist but the it was so rushed. Idk I just wanted this book to be done.

Vianoce pustené priamo do žily. V tomto je Julie dosť dobrá. Opisy miest, jedla, atmosféry,... Preto tie knihy čítam. Dej, príbeh - nuž, to by tam ani nemuselo byť, nebavia ma stále viac. Vlastne toto bola možno posledná prečítaná, uvidíme.

3.5 🌟 from me

Thank you NetGalley, HarperCollins UK and One More Chapter or the eARC. All opinions are my own :)

Evie Green’s Christmas goes viral for all the wrong reasons, turning her into the internet’s latest joke. When a luxury New York hotel offers her a chance to redeem herself with a festive PR stunt, she takes it, only to find herself paired with Noah Sanderson, a soccer star hiding from his own scandal. Forced to fake a holiday romance, the two quickly discover that pretending to be in love might be more complicated than either of them expected.

I loved the setting of this book. Wintertime New York felt so magical, festive, and cozy. The descriptions of the city, the snow, and all the holiday lights were beautiful and made me want to hop on a plane immediately. The premise itself was also really sweet - a viral disaster turned Christmas miracle - and I’m always a fan of stories that mix humor, second chances, and romance.

The tropes were definitely my favorite part: grumpy x sunshine (one of my all-time favorites) and forced proximity always make for fun dynamics. I also loved that the story was told in dual POV, letting us see both Evie’s optimism and Noah’s guardedness.

However… I just didn’t feel the spark. For a story built around a fake relationship, there wasn’t much chemistry between the main characters. Noah came across as really inconsistent - hot one moment, cold the next - and it made it hard to root for them as a couple. I honestly couldn’t pinpoint the moment they started liking each other, which left the romance feeling a little flat.

Still, it’s a warm, easy holiday read with lovely festive vibes and a great setting. Perfect if you’re in the mood for something light and Christmassy, even if the romance doesn’t completely sweep you away.
