Summerwind: A haunted house

Rate this book
Summerwind is the home Maxwell Shaw and his wife Alicia built for themselves. They lived there in peace and harmony with their daughter Haylie, until a tragedy took Alicia and Haylie from Max. It's now nearly two years later and Max has remarried and is moving his new wife into Summerwind. They are looking forward to a few days being snowed in and enjoying their newly married bliss, but things begin to grow somber when Max finds that Summerwind is now haunted by his daughter.

A jack of all genres and Master of None, I like to dabble in writing most anything that suits my current fancy.

'Though I've been writing since age eleven, I hadn't bothered to publish anything until a few years ago, starting with my short story Old Pops' Last Beer. Since that time I've put out a few dozen short stories, along with a few novellas.

I consider my first published novel, Rave On to be a fiftieth birthday present to myself, having shoved it into the public eye on that semicentennial landmark. I often refer to it as a "magical, musical, romance". It's a story of what happens when a rockabilly singer from Iowa meets a mysterious magician from Romania.

My second novel is Suckers & Rogues, a coming-of-age saga set in the mid-eighties in which I examine teenage angst.

My third novel, which should be out by summer of 2022 is untitled at the moment. It is a paranormal mystery / horror about a group of ghost hunters exploring the secrets of an abandoned kiddie theme park.

When I'm not writing, I work with special needs adults or spend time with my wife and my dogs.

The story started slow, showing Max, a widower who lost his wife and daughter in a car accident, marrying Sarah, a young black woman, half his age, spending their honeymoon in a remote cabin (wow, what a long sentence). Summerwind so the name of the residence. Then he meets the ghosts of his deceased daughter and later on his wife. They warn him that his new wife is planning to kill him. What is the reason for their assumption? And how does the story continue? From the point newlywed wife is planning to kill the story kickstarts and gets extremely intriguing and eerie (winter/they are snowed in). Does Max stand a chance to get out of this alive? What about Sarah? I can highly recommend this well plotted story with interesting characters and ghosts. It's scary and good!

By now, I have read enough by this author to know not to expect anything less than the unexpected. This is no exception. What starts off like a standard if not typical ghost story takes a turn and I almost thought I knew what was going to happen, but alas, my deductive reasoning was no match for the author's imagination. Peeve for anyone looking for a short, spooky read.

Widower Max brings his new bride home, but they're not alone. Having lost his wife and teenage daughter almost two years and feeling guilty about moving his much younger wife into his family's home, Max starts to see things. Is the ghost of his daughter Haylie really visiting him? And if it is his daughter's ghost, can she be trusted?

This was an entertaining read, especially for a stormy fall day curled by the fireplace. A great little ghost story!

An excellent story that rekindled my own love of ghost stories while I was reading it. Short, sweet, and deftly understated prose, which I find consistently in all of Mr. Fry's works.

Max and his new wife are snowed in in Max' house which is called "Summerwind". The story has some twists, at first this is quite nice and creepy but for my taste the story is too violent towards the end.

Quirky ghost story; enjoyable

Well-written short story, with interesting characters. The author pulls you into Summer wind, and makes the snowstorm so real that you'll feel chilled while reading. The plot is full of surprises and moves quickly. I recommend this book and author to anyone who enjoys a good, straightforward story with real characters.
