✨Ramayana has been an important part of our culture and childhood and we hear references to it quite often. The focus, though, has always been on Ram and Sita. Ram for most of the time. But have you ever wondered what happened to the other characters, particularly those who got left behind? Ram and Sita had each other's support when in exile. What about Laxman? And his wife Urmila? Wouldn't she have wanted to follow her husband into exile, just like her elder sister? Separated from her husband for 14 years when Laxman wasn't even bound to go, who tells the tale of her suffering?
.
✨Saket is an epic poem written in Hindi by Maithilisharan Gupt in which he gives a beautiful and moving description of Urmila's suffering and sacrifice. This is a humanised version of Ramayan where Sumitra is ready to take up arms against Kaikeyi, Bharat offers Sita to rule the empire or let him fulfill the exile on behalf of Ram, where Ram cries on several occasions, gets outbested in arguments. The glory here is not for Ram and Sita. It has been showered upon the courage and devotion of Urmila and Laxman. And it is a beautiful experience.
.
✨The introduction to Urmila's character in the epic is honestly one of the best intros I've read till date. It'sIt's simply glorious. The focus of the epic is on how Urmila passes those 14 years, her thoughts, her regrets, hopes and imaginations. Gupt has brought out the strength of her character in a fine and delicate manner. Sometimes she wishes she had accompanied her husband, then honours her stay knowing it was the right thing to do, relishes her tears, celebrates her pain, finds solace in nature, asks the summer not to be harsh or winter to be too cold where her husband is residing, imagines Laxman is secretly spying on her, wishes if she could have done the same.
.
✨The tumult of emotions is a very relatable thing and I relished every ounce of it. The language is quite easy, not as hard as Nirala's. Urmila and Laxman being my ever-favourite characters, I'm glad they have been duly celebrated in this manner.
